Prerequisite PBI 0011 Preparatory English 1

Course Synopsis This course aims to further strengthen students social
communicative competence in English for a variety of everyday
purposes. Students have the opportunity to develop and integrate
skills of listening, speaking, reading and writing. With a focus on
literacy skills, students will engage with a range of text types and
practice using language appropriately and accurately in meaningful
contexts.

Course Aims

This course aims to:

1. further develop students social communicative skills in English for
everyday purposes;
2. provide students with opportunities to use the language in a range
of challenging everyday situations;
3. enable students to listen and speak more confidently in English;
and
4. enable students to read and write a variety of extensive texts in
English.

Objectives
Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to
demonstrate the following skills in everyday situations:

1. Demonstrate coherence in sequential events.
2. Respond to a situation in a given role play.
3. Deliver a group presentation on a specific theme.
4. Demonstrate comprehension of given texts.

Week 1, 2 hours
Learning Unit 1: Congratulations, Asking For and Giving Advice
Express orally on congratulations, asking for and giving
advice
Extract main ideas and specific information
Write text on giving advice and making recommendations
using modal verbs and expressions

Week 2-3, 4 hours
Learning Unit 2: Describing Places
Use adjectives and adverbs and use them appropriately
Give an oral description for places of interest
Write a descriptive text using appropriate organisation and
features

Week 4-5, 4 hours
Learning Unit 3: Recounting Past Experiences
Use subject verb agreement and use them appropriately
Use first, second and third person perspective in proper
context
Write a recount with appropriate organisation and features

Assessment 1- Individual Writing (15%)

Week 6-7, 4 hours
Learning Unit 4: Reading about Health
Use active and passive voice and use them appropriately
Skim for the main ideas and scan specific information
Read for gist and specific details as well as inferential and
interpretive meanings

Differentiate between facts and opinions
Write argumentative text with appropriate organisation and

Practice presentation skills

Learning Unit 7: Social Ills
Generate ideas for an essay and a presentation
Express opinions in written form
Present a group presentation

Assessment 3- Group Presentation (20%)





Teaching-
Learning
Approach

Classes are conducted in small group tutorial mode. The emphasis is
on students reading and writing skills. Students are required to
attend two two-hour of face-to-face sessions per week, do oral and
written assignments, group discussion and self access learning.
