Maa Jwala Devi -

A cowherd found that one of his cows was always without milk. He followed the cow to fnd out the cause.
He saw a girl come out of the forest, drink the cows milk, and then disappear in a ash of light. !he
cowherd went to the king and told him the story. !he king was aware of the legend that "ati#s tongue had
fallen in this area. !he king tried, without success, to fnd that sacred spot. Again, some years later, the
cowherd went to the king to report that he had seen a ame $urning in the mountains. !he king found the
spot and had darshan %vision& of the holy ame. He $uilt a temple there and arranged for priests to
enguage in regular worship. 't is $elieved that the (andavas came later and renovated the temple.
't was Dhyanu )hagat who spread Devi Mata#s name. He lived at the time of the Mughal *mperor Ak$ar.
Dhyanu )hagat was passing through Delhi with a group of pilgrams on their way to Jwala+i. Ak$ar
summoned him to his court to in,uire into the nature of their -oddess. Dhyanu )hagat told him "he is all
powerful and answers the prayers of Her devotees.
!o test Her power Ak$ar cut o. the head of Dhyanu#s horse ordering him to have the -oddess put it $ack.
Dhyanu went to Jwala+i and prayed day and night to no avail. /ut of desperation he cut of his own head
and o.ered it to Devi Ma. "he then appeared to him riding a lion. "he reconnected $oth his head and that
of the horse. Devi Ma also o.ered Dhyanu )hagat a $oon. He re,uested that it should not $e so di0cult
for pigrams to show their devotion. Mata said that in the future if someone o.ered a coconut she would
accept it as if they had o.ered their own head. !o this day people continue to o.er coconuts to the
-oddess in Her temples all over the world.

Jwala Devi is a hindu goddess .Alternative spelling and names for Jwala Ji include Jvala Ji, Jwala Devi and
Jwalamukhi Ji. !he physical manifestation of Jwala Ji is always a set of ames $urning o. natural gas, and
the term Jwala means ame in "anskrit %cognates1 proto-'ndo-*uropean guelh, *nglish1 glow& and Ji is an
honorifc used in the 'ndian su$continent.
Historically, shrines dedicated to Jwala Ji were $ased on fssures from which natural gas seeped $y itself.
!he num$er of ames is usually either seven %for the seven divine sisters& or nine % Maha 2ali, Maa
Annapurna, Maa 3handi, Maa Hingla+, 4indhyavasini, Maha 5akshmi, Maha "araswati, Maa Am$ika and
An+ana Devi&. "everal schools of )uddhism also share the sym$olism of a seven-forked sacred ame.
Maa Jwala Devi, Jwala Ji, Jwalamukhi is the most famous "hakti (eetha where it is said that the 6!ongue7
of Maa "ati fell. -oddess Jwalamukhi with aming mouth also known as 8laming -oddess.
