July 2013
Web and Mobile Server Version 6.6SP2
(Build 71)
General Description
The ViconNet web and mobile server is integral to supporting Vicon Mobile, a new free app that allows
ViconNet users to view video on Apple and Android smart phones and tablets.
The web and mobile server is an upgraded version of Vicons previously released web server, which was
designed to support users accessing ViconNet through the thin-client, browser interface. Moving forward,
the web and mobile server replaces the web server and will be installed on all new systems requiring
browser support, even if mobile apps will not be used.
Like the original web server, the expanded web and mobile server can be installed on the system Nucleus
or on a standalone, dedicated device. Because of the processing power required to support Vicon Mobile,
we recommend that standalone server or server(s) be used in any systems that will make use of the
mobile app. The number of web browsers and mobile app users that can be supported simultaneously by
a single web and mobile server varies depending on a range of factors, which will be explained in
separate documentation. Please contact your Vicon representative for assistance in designing
any system configuration that will make use of the mobile app.
In addition, this update fixes a range of previously identified issues and improves overall system
performance and stability.
Vicon Production
The new version of ViconNet is now in production.
This software package is also available on Vicons web site. A license must be purchase if upgrading a
system not already at ViconNet version 6.x.
Field Installation
The installation of the Web and Mobile Server 6.6SP2 on existing Web Server 6.x systems now requires
licensing of the server if you are using a standalone device; make sure to obtain this license prior to
starting a fresh install or an upgrade. It is not required if you are upgrading the web server on your
nucleus to support a small number of web devices. This software is expected to provide a solution to the
list of issues detailed on the ViconNet 6.6SP2 release notes. It also adds support for Vicon Mobile.
Note that if you have been using your ViconNet Nucleus as your web server up to now and will not be
adding mobile device usage, your updated Nucleus will keep supporting web viewers as before. If you are

adding mobile device support, Vicon recommends installing a standalone web and mobile server (or
multiple ones) to provide enough processing power.
New Features
Support mobile devices (Apple, Android) through the web server
This version now supports the use of mobile phones and tablets running Apple or Android OS. This is
done through the upgraded web server, which is now a web and mobile server. Using mobile applications
requires performance resources higher than those required in the past for web-based viewing, and these
new systems need to be designed accordingly.
Minimum supported mobile versions:
- Apple iPhone and iPad iOS 5 and iOS 6
- Android phones and tablets Android version 2.3 and higher
A link to a list of devices, models and firmware versions tested by Vicon is available on the Mobile App
product page, www.vicon-security.com/vicon-mobile.htm.
Installation package enhancements
All installation files for this version are now provided in a single compressed file instead of a
folder with multiple files (this includes the same driver 936 as the other 6.6SP2 packages).
All installation information is collected at the beginning of the process (Nucleus, ports, etc.).
Enhanced support running on 64bit-based Windows OS
When running on a 64bit-based Windows OS (see datasheet for approved versions), the application will
take advantage of the additional RAM option.
Expanded web server set up tool
The web and mobile server setup allows for more extensive control of settings than previously. A
configuration window has been added to control settings that include load balance, port protocols and
video quality settings. This is used in cases when the web and mobile server configuration needs to be
changed (as the server has no user interface and runs as a Window service). See installation and
configuration manual for details.
Support for load balancer when using multiple servers
In systems that have more than a single standalone web and mobile server, the Nucleus will be set up as
a load balance server (part of the web configuration on the Nucleus) and will allow all users to browse
from their web viewers or mobile devices to the Nucleus address while, in the background, the Nucleus
will balance the load between all available servers for an optimized operation.

Support for high resolution cameras
This version allows transmitting images from high megapixel cameras (over 2MP) to the web viewer and
mobile devices (former version did not support resolutions higher than 2MP). Note that when these high
megapixel cameras are used they require more processing power.
Support for MPEG-4 video
This version allows transmitting MPEG-4-based video cameras to the web viewer and mobile devices
(former version did not support this video format at all). Note that when these cameras are used they
require more processing power than the H.264 or M-J PEG models.
Solved Issues
Users of the web browser could not see NVRs in the storage site list
Users of the web browser interface can now call up and view recorded video from NVRs.
No login to web server when PC name was in Hebrew characters
Hebrew characters are now recognized by the web server during the log-in process.
Known Issues
We are working to resolve the following issues related to ViconNet 6.6SP2.
Playback failure in web browser for simultaneous video and audio
Playing back video and audio simultaneously on the web viewer doesnt work. Attempting to do so (e.g.,
running audio while video playback is on) will stop both.
Mobile app not supported on all devices
Due to the large variance between mobile devices, primarily Android OS-based, the application might not
run on certain phones or tablets. Vicon continues to update the applications in the Apple app store and
Google Play store to try to be compatible with as many devices as possible. A link to a list of devices
tested by Vicon can be found on the Mobile App product page, www.vicon-security.com/vicon-
mobile.htm.
No support for Blackberry or Windows RT
Regular Windows-based tablets can use the free web viewer based on Microsoft Silverlight. Phones or
tablets running Microsoft Windows RT are not compatible with the web or mobile app at this time. The
app is also not supported on Blackberry devices.
Availability
The Web Server 6.6SP2 (build 71) software has been released to production.
As mentioned previously, please be aware that the number of web browsers and mobile app users that
can be supported simultaneously by a single web and mobile server varies depending on a range of

factors, which will be explained in separate documentation (not yet released). Please contact your Vicon
representative for assistance in designing any system configuration that will make use of the mobile app.

Best practice system design:

A separate Nucleus with the web server set to run as a load-balace server
Standalone (or multiple) web server to support the required number of concurrent web and
mobile clients.
The web and mobile viewer will always connect to the Nucleus address, which will optimize the
load between available servers (this is done automaticaly and in a transparent manner).

Additional design examples will be provided in the Vicon mobile system white paper (not yet
released)
