License Operation Guide

Overview

The OptiX RTN 900 V100R002 inherits and improves the general license solution for the
OptiX RTN 600 V100R002. To assist the technical sales sector with license quotation and
management, the OptiX RTN 900 V100R002 implements license control by air interface in a
distributed manner rather than by NE in a centralized manner. In addition to the time division
multiplexing (TDM) licenses, the OptiX RTN 900 V100R002 introduces the adaptive
modulation (AM) and Ethernet (ETH) licenses for distributed control.

The AM license is used to control the AM function of the IFX2 or the IFU2. The IFX2 or
the IFU2 can provide the AM function only when having the AM license.

An ETH license is used to control the air capacity of the IFX2 or the IFU2. The air
capacity of the IFX2 or the IFU2 varies according to the ETH license capacity.

A TDM license is used to control the air capacity of the IF1. The air capacity of the IF1
varies according to the TDM license capacity.

Evolving from the OptiX PTN 900 that does not support license control, the OptiX RTN 900
V100R001 implements no license control. For uniformity, however, certain license quotation
items are designed for the OptiX RTN 900 V100R001. In this document, all contents apply to
the OptiX RTN 900 V100R002 unless otherwise specified and the contents that apply only to
the OptiX RTN 900 V100R001 are stated specially.

MAX (unlimited)

Provides two AM license models according to whether to enable or disable the AM

function, including:

Enable

Disable

As described earlier, the ETH and AM licenses apply to the IFX2 and the IFU2.
The manufacturing and GTS sectors can download general license files for license control
according to the license quotation items. The OptiX RTN 900 uses the same license files as
the OptiX RTN 600.
Radio systems are usually installed in harsh environments. In addition, radio goods are subject
to changes during project construction phases. Based on its nearly three years of experience in
delivering OptiX RTN series radio equipment, Huawei develops and improves license
operation procedures. Huawei classifies radio system contracts into two types: general
contracts and stock contracts. Most are general contracts, while stock contracts account for
less than 5% of the total contracts. These two types of contracts differ in the E2E license
operation procedures. This document describes the license processing procedures for the two
types of contracts separately.

General License Processing

Procedure for General Contracts

3.1 License Schemes
Figure 1.1 shows the general license processing procedure for general contracts.
Figure 1.1 General license processing procedure for a general contract

This procedure is applicable to non-stock contracts, such as turnkey and I&C contracts.

A contract for network expansion or upgrade also includes license quotation. According to the
contracted capacity, the field GTS sector updates the license files and then expands the
network, as shown in Figure 1.2.

In the case of delivery and installation, service processing boards are mainly involved.

The manufacturing sector delivers the intermediate frequency (IF) and system control and
communication (SCC) boards according to the following two principles:
1.

2.

Delivers the IF boards with the license files with the maximum capacity, including:

Delivers the IF1 with the MAX TDM license file.

Delivers the IFX2 and the IFU2 with the MAX ETH and AM enable license files.

Delivers the SCC, including the CF, without any license file. The equipment software
deletes all license files from the SCC by using the commands provided by the R&D
sector.

3.2 Technical Sales

3.2.1 License Quotation Items
After receiving a bill of quote (BOQ) from the network planning team, the field product
manager quotes a license expense according to the equipment type and the license control
items.
This section lists the license control items for the OptiX RTN 900 with bill of material (BOM)

3.2.2 License Quotation Rules

The customer sometimes does not specify the license capacity plan and requirements,
especially in a turnkey project or a project sold with wireless equipment. In this case, the field
product manager configures and sells a proper license according to the air interface bandwidth
planned for a radio link.

Rules for Quoting a 4xE1 Based License

A 4xE based TDM license is quoted according to IF1 and is quoted as a sub-item of an
IF1 board. The OptiX RTN 600 has an E1/STM-1 license quoted according to NE. The
OptiX RTN 900 changes the policy and has a license quoted according to IF board.

A 4xE1 based TDM license uses 4xE1 as a basis. Assume that an IF1 board contains
Nx4xE1. Then, the board requires N 4xE1 groups.

Under 1+1 protection, equal license needs to be quoted for either board. In other words,
the license for the 1+1 system is the double of the license for the 1+0 system.

The OptiX RTN 600 offers one 4xE1 group for free. The Quoter counts out the free offer
automatically when generating a quotation. The OptiX RTN 900 changes the policy and
does not offer a 4xE1 TDM group for free. The Quoter computes the required capacity
automatically.

Rules for Quoting an STM-1 Based TDM License

An STM-1 based TDM License is quoted according to IF1 and is quoted as a sub-item of
an IF1 board.

An STM-1 based TDM License uses STM-1 as a basis. Assume that an IF1 board
contains NxSTM-1. Then, the board requires N STM-1 groups.

Under 1+1 protection, equal license needs to be quoted for either board. In other words,
the license for the 1+1 system is the double of the license for the 1+0 system.

Rules for Quoting an ETH License

An ETH license is quoted according to IFU2, IFX2, or IFE2 and is quoted as a sub-item
of an IFU2, IFX2, or IFE2 board.

To simplify the radio capacity management over a network, Huawei classifies the ETH
licenses into nine levels: 10 Mbit/s, 20 Mbit/s, 50 Mbit/s, 100 Mbit/s, 150 Mbit/s, 200
Mbit/s, 300 Mbit/s, 400 Mbit/s, and MAX. Assume that an IF board demands a capacity
of 160 Mbit/s, which is between the 150 Mbit/s and 200 Mbit/s levels. Then, according
to the principle of preferring the higher level to the lower level, a 200 Mbit/s ETH
license needs to be quoted. Quoting a combination of 10 Mbit/s and 150 Mbit/s ETH
licenses is forbidden.

Under 1+1 protection, equal license needs to be quoted for either board. In other words,
the license for the 1+1 system is the double of the license for the 1+0 system.

License Operation Guide

The E1 traffic on a hybrid/packet IF board can be measured in Mbit/s according to the

principle that an E1 consumes about 2 Mbit/s. Assume that a hybrid/packet IF board
contains 16xE1. Then, 16xE1 = 16 x 2 Mbit/s = 32 Mbit/s. Thus, a 50 Mbit/s ETH
license needs to be quoted.

In the case of network expansion or upgrade, the difference between the new and the
existing licenses is quoted. To ensure timely license delivery and project implementation,
however, the new ETH license is provided in the quotation/delivery BOQ. Assume that
an existing IF board with a 20 Mbit/s ETH license needs to be upgraded to a capacity of
50 Mbit/s. Then, a capacity of 3 x 10 Mbit/s, the difference between 50 Mbit/s and 20
Mbit/s, needs to be quoted. To ensure timely license delivery, however, the 50 Mbit/s
ETH license is provided in the delivery BOQ. During the network expansion or upgrade,
all factors need to be considered fully, such as antenna capacity and link reserve.

Rules for Quoting the AM License

The license is quoted as required.

The AM license is quoted according to IFU2, IFX2, or IFE2 and is quoted as a sub-item
of an IFU2, IFX2, or IFE2 board.

Under 1+1 protection, equal license needs to be quoted for either board. In other words,
the license for the 1+1 system is the double of the license for the 1+0 system.

Rules for Quoting the License for the IEEE 1588 V2 Function

The license is quoted as required.

Each NE requires only one such license to support the function.

Rules for Quoting the ATM License

The license helps to control the ATM/IMA function of a smart E1 board and is quoted as
required.

Each NE requires only one such license to support the function.

Computation

Computing the number of 4xE1 groups required by an IF board

Assume that the network planning shows a demand for a radio hop with NxE1. Then, the
number of 4xE1 groups that the IF board requires, M, can be computed as follows:
M = N/4

Computing the number of STM-1 groups required by an IF board

The number of STM-1 groups that an IF board requires is simply equal to the number of
STM-1s that the IF board contains.

Computing the license capacity required by a hybrid/packet IF board

The E1 traffic on a hybrid/packet IF board can be measured in Mbit/s according to the

principle that an E1 consumes about 2 Mbit/s. Assume that an IF board contains NxE1
and carries P Mbit/s of Ethernet traffic. Then, the license capacity that the IF board
requires, M, can be computed as follows:

M=Nx2+P
A license quotation example is described as follows:
Assume that a BOQ from the network planning team specifies a demand for a "15 GHz 16xE1 1+1 0.6
m" radio hop, a 16xE1 system under 1+1 protection. Then, the computation result is as follows:

Number of 4xE1 groups required by either IF board = 16/4 = 4
Under 1+1 protection, equal license needs to be quoted for either board. In other words, the license for
the 1+1 system is the double of the license for the 1+0 system. Therefore, a total of eight 4xE1 groups
need to be quoted.

3.2.3 License Quotation Precautions

The words in red require special attention.
1.

When signing a stock contract (with the customer who buys and stocks radio goods
for emergency), the field product manager notifies the contract administrator in the
local representative office of the stock contract. For details, see Chapter 4 "General
License Processing Procedure for Stock Contracts." In the case of a general contract,
this special notification is not required.

2.

The ATM license control is actually unavailable on the OptiX RTN 900. Quoting the
ATM license is optional. The ATM license is not quoted by default because most
competitors do not support the IMA aggregation of E1s. If the customer demands the
ATM function, the ATM license can be quoted. Replying to the relevant queries of the
customer, however, is difficult due to the unavailability of the software control. If the
customer does not accept the unavailability, the ATM function can prevent from the
quotation or offered for free.

3.

When signing an expansion contract, the technical sales sector needs to quote the license
capacity expansion in the contract. The license capacity expansion means the difference
between the new license capacity and the existing license capacity. Assume that a 16xE1
IF board with 1+0 configuration needs to be expanded with 1+1 protection. Then, 16xE1
needs to be quoted in addition to the new IF board in the expansion contract. Based on
the existing license capacity and the license capacity expansion, the GTS sector selects
the general license files and expands the system on the site.

4.

The field product manager informs the customer that no printed license certificate is
available in the existing license control schemes.

3.3 Manufacturing Sector

The manufacturing sector carries out the following license operations after commissioning the
integrated equipment:

In the case of a general contract, the manufacturing sector loads all IF boards with the
license files with the maximum capacity, including:

Loads the IF1 with the MAX TDM license file.

Loads the IFX2 and the IFU2 with the MAX ETH and AM enable license files.

In the case of a stock contract, the manufacturing sector loads an IF board with a general
license file as contracted, including:

Loads the IF1 with a TDM license file as contracted.

Loads the IFX2 and the IFU2 with the AM enable license file and an ETH license file
as contracted.

The manufacturing sector delivers the SCC without any license file.
This section describes the license operations of the manufacturing sector for a general
contract. In the case of a general contract, the manufacturing sector carries out the license
operations in three steps after commissioning the integrated equipment, as shown in Figure
1.1.

3.4 GTS Sector

The OptiX RTN 900 has used distributed license files since V100R002.

License Operation Guide

A TDM license helps to control the air capacity of the IF1. The air capacity of the IF1
varies according to the TDM license capacity.

The GTS sector loads a license in the same way that the technical sales sector sells a license.
The GTS sector loads a license according to the air interface bandwidth planned for a radio
link and the principle of preferring a higher license to a lower license. Assume that a
bandwidth of 80 Mbit/s is demanded over an air interface, which is between the 50 Mbit/s and
100 Mbit/s licenses. According to the principle of preferring the higher to the lower, the GTS
sector loads a 100 Mbit/s license. If a 50 Mbit/s license is loaded, 30 Mbit/s traffic is
restricted. In addition, if the customer does not order the AM license, the GTS sector loads the
AM disable license file.
The manufacturing sector delivers the SCC without any license and delivers the IF boards
with the licenses with the maximum capacity, including the AM license. The GTS sector
reclaims the extra license capacity by loading a proper license. Loading a license to reclaim
extra license capacity does not reset a board. The GTS sector only needs to load a license to
an IF board. When the GTS sector loads the license to the IF board, the NE backs up the
license to the SCC.
The license priority policies and the license deletion policies are as follows:

On an NE that is first powered on, the SCC does not contain any license file. After an IF
board is inserted into the NE, the SCC will synchronize itself with the license files on the
IF board in 48 hours. Thus, the license files will exist on the SCC in addition to the IF
board.

Assume that an IF board is removed, for example, from slot 5 of the NE. The SCC
determines whether to delete the licenses for the IF slot according to whether the IF
board is removed logically.

If the IF board is removed only physically rather than logically, the SCC retains the
licenses for the IF slot. After a new IF board is inserted into the slot, the SCC uses the
licenses for the slot to overwrite the licenses, if any, on the new IF board. (The
manufacturing sector delivers an IF board with the licenses with the maximum capacity.)

If the IF board is removed logically, the SCC will delete the licenses for the IF slot in
48 hours. If a new IF board is inserted into the slot after the deletion, the SCC will
synchronize itself with the licenses on the new IF board in 48 hours.

To ensure proper license control, the GTS sector loads an ETH license file with proper
capacity to an IF board. Otherwise, the Ethernet traffic on the IF board might be impaired.
Assume that a 50 Mbit/s license file is loaded for 80 Mbit/s TDM and Ethernet traffic. Then,
the license capacity is 30 Mbit/s lower than the traffic requirement. If the 30 Mbit/s were
assigned to Ethernet traffic, the Ethernet traffic would be restricted. A license file does not
affect the TDM traffic configured before the loading of the license file.
Evolving from the OptiX PTN 900 that does not support license control, the OptiX RTN 900
V100R001 implements no license control.
To simplify the goods distribution on the site, the manufacturing sector delivers the IF boards
with the licenses with the maximum capacity by default. To protect all the general license files
from being disclosed, the GTS sector keeps the files under tight supervision. The GTS sector
reclaims the extra license capacity beyond the contract by loading a proper license without
affecting existing traffic during the project implementation or before the preliminary
acceptance. The GTS sector loads the license according to the actual air interface bandwidth
planned for a radio link. If the customer orders the AM function, the GTS sector loads the
ETH license according to the maximum capacity specified in the AM plan.
The general license files are available for controlled download at http://support.huawei.com.
A field engineer needs to submit an application and get an approval before downloading a

license file. For details on how to apply for a license, see the OptiX RTN 900 License
Application Specification. For details on how to download a license file, see section 5.2
"Loading a General License File by Using the DC on the T2000 in the GTS Sector".
The GTS sector is involved in the following six license operation scenarios:

Reclaiming extra license capacity

This scenario occurs after the project installation and commissioning, during the project
implementation, or before the preliminary acceptance. The GTS sector reclaims the extra
license capacity by loading a proper license according to the maximum air interface
bandwidth planned for a radio link. The sector downloads the license file from
http://support.huawei.com locally or remotely by using the data center (DC) software.
After the DC downloads the license file to the NE, the NE copies and activates the file
automatically without reset.
The GTS sector needs to reclaim the extra license capacity from each board under 1+1 or N+1
protection.

Expanding network capacity

This scenario occurs when the customer signs an expansion contract to expand link
capacity from a lower level to a higher level. With the permission of the technical sales
sector, the GTS sector downloads a proper license file locally or remotely according to
the new license capacity by using the DC. After the DC downloads the license file to the
NE, the NE activates and loads the file automatically. Then, the GTS sector adds other
new configurations.

Replacing the faulty SCC board with a new one

When a single SCC board is configured, the GTS sector does as follows to replace
the faulty SCC board with a new one:
If the SCC board uses a compact flash (CF), the CF stores the database and the
license files. In this case, the GTS sector completes the replacement as follows. The
sector moves the CF from the faulty SCC board to the new SCC board, and then
inserts the new SCC board into the NE. After the NE starts properly, the sector
presses the button on the CF for about five seconds to restore the database and the
license files.
If the SCC board does not use a CF, the license files are stored on the IF boards. In
this case, the GTS sector completes the replacement as follows. The sector inserts the
new SCC board into the NE. The SCC will synchronize itself with the license files on
the IF boards in 48 hours. Then, the sector adds the cross-connections and other
configurations or restores the configurations from a backup database (in another
location, for example, on the T2000).
When dual SCC boards are configured, the GTS sector does as follows to replace the
faulty SCC board with a new one:
The GTS sector switches the available SCC board to the active state.
Then, the GTS sector replaces the faulty SCC board with a new one. In this case, the
sector does not need to press the button on the CF. The standby SCC board
synchronizes itself with the database and the license files on the active SCC board
immediately after starting properly.

Replacing the faulty CF with a new one

The GTS sector inserts the new CF into the SCC board. In this case, the sector does not
need to press the button on the CF. The SCC board already maintains the license files
and the configurations.

The SCC board needs to be removed and then re-inserted to synchronize the new CF with the licenses
and the configurations. This interrupts the traffic.

Upgrading the OptiX RTN 900 from V100R001 to V100R002

The OptiX RTN 900 V100R001 implements no license control. Therefore, when
upgrading the OptiX RTN 900 from V100R001 to V100R002, the GTS sector enables
license control on the NE by loading proper general licenses to the NE. The sector
downloads the general license files locally or remotely according to the air capacity of
the NE. The GTS sector carries out the same operations in this scenario as in the scenario
for reclaiming extra license capacity or for expanding network capacity.

Upgrading the OptiX RTN 900 from V100R002 TR5 to V100R002 GA

No license file needs to be upgraded in this scenario.

3.5 R&D Sector

The R&D sector generates license files, and then releases the files to the manufacturing and
GTS sectors through a baseline. Huawei does not offer a license file for free. The R&D sector,
however, develops the codes or conditional statements for free offer.
The R&D sector develops many license functions, including:
1.
2.

3.
4.
5.

6.

License file loading: A license file can be loaded to an NE by using the DC. After the DC
loads the license file to the NE, the NE activates the file automatically.
TDM license control: TDM license control is specific to cross-connections rather than IF
interfaces. If an attempt is made to configure traffic higher than the license capacity, a
license threshold crossing error is returned and the cross-connection fails to be added. A
cross-connection from a line to a tributary is not under the control.
AM license control: AM license control is specific to IF boards. If an attempt is made to
set the AM function without the AM license or with the AM disable license file, a license
threshold crossing error is returned.
ETH license control: ETH license control is specific to E1s and Ethernet traffic rather
than IF interfaces. If an attempt is made to configure traffic higher than the license
capacity, a license threshold crossing error is returned.
License capacity display: A system displays its existing capacity and license capacity in
proper units. The system displays the traditional TDM capacity in E1s or STM-1s and
the hybrid and packet capacities in Mbit/s. When loaded with the MAX license file, the
system displays the license capacity as MAX.
License alarms: Figure 6.1 lists two license related alarms.

General License Processing

Procedure for Stock Contracts

In a stock contract, the customer buys and stocks equipment for emergency. The customer
installs the equipment with its own efforts. In this case, the GTS sector does not have an
opportunity to reclaim extra license capacity. Therefore, the manufacturing sector needs to
load a proper license file as contracted. Stock contracts account for about 5% of the total
contracts. The license operation procedures for stock contracts slightly differ from the license
operation procedures for general contracts.
Figure 1.1 shows the general license operation procedure for a stock contract.

4.2 Technical Sales

The technical sales sector quotes a license in the same way for a stock contract as for a
general contract.
The technical sales sector, however, deals with a stock contract in a different way from how
the sector deals with a general contract.
1.

How to identify a stock contract

In a stock contract, the customer buys and stocks equipment for emergency. The
customer installs the equipment with its own efforts.

2.

How to operate on a hop- or site-based stock contract

A stock contract specifies quotation and delivery by hop or site. When signing a stock
contract, the field product manager notifies the contract administrator in the local
representative office of the stock contract. The contract administrator then types Stock
Contract in the Plan Remark box for the contract in the contract processing platform
(CPP). The CPP transfers the remark to the manufacturing sector. The manufacturing
sector then loads a proper license file according to the actual traffic needs.

3.

How to operate on an item-based stock contract

To control the cost of the entire procedure, a stock contract specifies quotation and
delivery by hop or site rather than by module or item. If the customer insists on signing
an item-based stock contract, the field product manager notifies the contract
administrator in the local representative office of the item-based stock contract. The
contract administrator then types Stock Contract with a remark that a capacity label
needs to be affixed to an IF board in the Plan Remark box for the contract in the CPP.
The capacity labels assist with the goods distribution on the site. Huawei does not
provide a standard for the label size. The manufacturing sector can select labels of the
same size. Several label examples are described as follows.

If no license is quoted in a stock contract, the manufacturing sector delivers the equipment with
minimum configurations, that is, 4xE1 TDM capacity, 10 Mbit/s Ethernet capacity, and disabled AM.
This might affect the operations of the customer.

4.3 Manufacturing Sector

In the case of a stock contract, the manufacturing sector loads a proper license file as
contracted.

The manufacturing sector carries out the following license operations for a stock contract:
1.

Queries the traffic need of each IF board in the contract in the ERP system.

2.

Selects a proper license file for the board according to the traffic need and the rules for
selecting a license file.
Loads the proper License.ini file to the board by using the DC, and then ensures that the
license file is loaded successfully.

3.

The equipment software loads a license file to an IF board by using FTP, and then activates the file
automatically.

4.

Deletes the license file from the SCC by using the equipment software after the
manufacturing test.

The manufacturing sector selects a license file according to the following three rules:
5.

Divides the total traffic needs in the ERP system by the number of IDUs to obtain the
traffic needs of each IDU and to determine whether to deliver the equipment by hop or
site.

Converts and STM-1 into 64xE1 when computing the TDM traffic needs (of the IF1).
Measures the E1 traffic in Mbit/s as follows when computing the hybrid and packet
traffic needs (of the IFX2 and the IFU2):
Capacity = N x 2 + P
Wherein, N indicates the number of VC-12 channels and P indicates the packet
capacity.

6.

Rounds up the traffic needs in E1s or Mbit/s to the next license capacity level, and then
selects the proper general license file.

7.

Selects the AM license enable or disable license file according to whether to enable or
disable the AM function.

Figure 7.1 lists the 18 general license files.

The manufacturing sector obtains the preceding 18 general license files through a
configuration management officer (CMO) baseline. The files are version-independent and are

the CMO baseline to the manufacturing sector. The sector does not archive a license file by
using a code. Instead, the sector archives the baseline separately.

A license selection example is described as follows:

Assume that the technical sales sector sells a "15 GHz 16xE1 1+1 0.6 m" radio hop.
1.

According to the license quotation rules, the technical sales sector quotes seven 4xE1
groups for the 16xE1 system under 1+1 protection.

2.

The manufacturing sector computes the traffic needs: 7 x 4xE1 = 28xE1. Then, the
manufacturing sector rounds up the traffic needs to the next license capacity level, 32xE1
and selects the License_32E1.ini file.

3.

The manufacturing sector loads the license file to the system and then ensures that the
license file is loaded successfully.

4.

In the case of an item-based stock contract, the contract administrator makes a remark
that a capacity label needs to be affixed to an IF board for the contract in the CPP.
According to this remark, the manufacturing sector affixes a printed capacity label to the
front panel of either IF board.

4.4 GTS Sector

In a stock contract, the customer buys and stocks equipment for emergency. The customer
installs the equipment with its own efforts. Therefore, the GTS does not carry out any
operation for a stock contract. A stock contract specifies quotation by hop or site. If the
technical sales sector specifies the capacity of a site in the contract, the manufacturing sector
affixes the capacity label to the carton of the equipment.

4.5 Precautions
According to the quotation template, the technical sales sector specifies capacity information
in a stock contract BOQ, such as "15 GHz 16E1 1+0". The manufacturing sector affixes the
capacity label to the carton of the equipment, simplifying the goods distribution on the site.

5.2 Loading a General License File by Using

the DC on the T2000 in the GTS Sector
To ensure proper license control, the GTS sector loads an ETH license file with proper
capacity to an IF board. Otherwise, the Ethernet traffic on the IF board might be impaired.
The OptiX RTN 900 differs from the OptiX RTN 600 in how to load a TDM license file. The
OptiX RTN 600 loads a TDM license file (to the SCC) in a centralized manner. The OptiX
RTN 900 loads a TDM license file to each IF1 in a distributed manner.
Loading a license to reclaim extra license capacity does not reset a board. The GTS sector
only needs to load a license to an IF board. When the GTS sector loads the license to the IF
board, the NE backs up the license to the SCC.

5.4 FAQs
5.4.1 What Types of License Files Does Huawei Offer
and What Boards Support the License Files?
A: Huawei offers the following three types of license files:
1.

AM license files
Huawei classifies the AM license files into the following two types:

AM enable license file

AM disable license file

By default, when an IF board is not loaded with an AM license file, the IF board does not
support the AM function.
The IFX2 and the IFU2 support the AM license files.
2.

TDM license files

Huawei classifies the TDM license files into the following seven levels:

32xE1

48xE1

64xE1 (1xSTM-1)

128xE1 (2xSTM-1)

MAX

By default, when an IF board is not loaded with a TDM license file, the IF board
supports 4xE1 traffic.
The IF1 supports the TDM license files.
3.

ETH license files

Huawei classifies the ETH license files into the following nine levels:

10 Mbit/s

20 Mbit/s

50 Mbit/s

100 Mbit/s

150 Mbit/s

200 Mbit/s

300 Mbit/s

400 Mbit/s

MAX

By default, when an IF board is not loaded with an ETH license file, the IF board
supports 10 Mbit/s traffic.
The IFX2 and the IFU2 support the ETH license files.

5.4.2 How Is a License File Backed Up in 48 Hours?

A: A license file can be backed up only when the following two prerequisites are met:

The boards are installed physically and logically.

The boards or the NE is not reset in 48 hours. If the boards or the NE is reset, the timer
starts timing again.

5.4.3 How Does a License File Control a Function or

Traffic Capacity?
A: All license files carry out control by direction.

5.4.4 How Does an ETH License File Control TDM and

Ethernet Traffic on the IFX2 and the IFU2?
A: An ETH license file controls TDM and Ethernet traffic on the IFX2 and the IFU2
according to the following two rules:
1.

Maximum Ethernet traffic = ETH license capacity maximum E1 traffic. The ETH
license controls traffic based on this formula.

2.

An E1 consumes about 2 Mbit/s.

License Operation Guide

Assume that an IFU2 board uses a 100 Mbit/s ETH license. Then, the traffic on the IFU2
board meets the following relation:
Number of E1s x 2 + Ethernet traffic <= ETH license capacity
For example, the IFU2 board supports the following traffic combinations:
50xE1 (TDM) + 0 Mbps (ETH)
49xE1 (TDM) + 2 Mbps (ETH)
49xE1 (TDM) + 1 Mbps (ETH)
49xE1 (TDM) + 0 Mbps (ETH)
48xE1 (TDM) + 4 Mbps (ETH)
...

5.4.5 How Many E1s Does a 100 Mbit/s ETH License

Support? Is a Formula Available for the Conversion?
A: A 100 Mbit/s ETH license supports up to 50 E1s.
An ETH license assumes that an E1 consumes 2 Mbit/s instead of 2.048 Mbit/s. This is
beneficial to the customer. Thus, a bandwidth of 100 Mbit/s supports up to 50 E1s. If the
customer requires less than 50 E1s, the customer can use the remaining capacity to transport
Ethernet traffic. For example, assume that the customer only uses 40 E1s. Then, a bandwidth
of 20 Mbit/s (= 100 40 x 2) remains. The customer can use the remaining bandwidth to
transport Ethernet traffic.
In addition, the maximum number of supported E1s also depends on the product specification.
For example, a 200 Mbit/s ETH license cannot be simply considered to support 100 E1s. The
maximum supported E1 quantity needs to be computed according to the ETH license capacity
and the product specification. The quantity depends on the ETH license capacity or the
product specification, whichever is less. That is, maximum number of supported E1s =
Min(LcsE1, PdtE1). Figure 1.1 and Figure 1.2 list the maximum number of E1s supported by
the IFU2 and the IFX2. These two tables might not be refreshed with latest changes. For the
latest information, see the relevant documents.
