A fixture of the fashion jet set for decades-and the author of a captivating new memoir
Giancarlo Giammetti opens the doors to his ultrarefined, art-filled Manhattan aerie

Valentino Garavani. With Giammeni managing
the designer's bosiness, the t men built the
house ofValenrino, Rome's most iconic and endur
ing fashion brand. The partners retired from
the company in 208, but their fJmously IU:urious lifestyle-what

E,en if NewYurk still holds a certain mystery, Giammeni
is hardly a stranger to the town. PrivQlCis chuck-full uf snap

was first and foremost a connector. She would have supper

Giammctti's book not only illustrates more than half a
century of jet-set social wh ir!. it also offers glimpses of the beau
tifl interiors he andValentino crafted over the years-stab'

always surrounded by the stars, models. and socialites of the
moment. In the late '80sGiammetti hired the 1q'ndaryMilan
based desilner Rcnzo Mongiardino. knm\'n for kaleidoscopic
pattern combinations and the use of trompe l'oeil, to decorate his
rambling villa in the Tuscan twnof Cetona-Mongiardino's
final project_ Today my style is much simpler." says Giammetti,
who trained to be an architect at the Universita di Architettura
La Sapienza in Rome before droppingoot to join Valentino
in bosiness. '"I love lufy ruums and big upen spaces where {nler
tainin!is eaier and where art is verimportnt. However.
I do not builduseless walls to gin space for art. I don't want
my house to look like a galler with white walls andgreat lights."
