EXCAVATION SUPPORTING SYSTEM
PART 1 - GENERAL
1.01 SECTION INCLUDES: Provide shoring and bracing for excavations,
complete.

1.03 UALITY ASSURANCE
A. "egulatory "e#uirements: "efer to and comply !ith the governing
Construction $afety %rders& secure and pay for all re#uired
permits. 'or o()site installation of shoring and related items,
conform to re#uirements of public agencies having *urisdiction&
obtain and pay for re#uired permits and inspections.
B. Professional %bservation: Perform +or, of this $ection under
observation and approval of the Engineer. -ive Engineer not less
than ./ hours advance notice of readiness for observation.
C. esign of $horing: Employ and pay a registered civil engineer to
prepare and stamp dra!ings and calculations sho!ing shoring
methods, bracing or tie bac, anchoring, !all supporting systems,
and other systems to be used for protection of ad*acent existing
structures and improvements and for earth ban,s& civil engineer
also shall obtain approvals for shoring into ad*acent properties or
into public property. The civil engineer shall submit these shoring
dra!ings, calculations, speci0cation, installation, method
statement to the Engineer for revie! and approval, obtain
approval prior to start of any construction involving shoring and
pay fees and charges, and 0le three copies of the approved
dra!ings and calculations !ith the Engineer.
1.0! PRO"ECT#SITE CONDITIONS
A. Protection: Provide and maintain protection to retain earth ban,s
and to protect ad*oining grades and structures from caving, sliding,
erosion, or other damage. Provide suitable protection against
bodily in*ury. Construct bul,heads and shoring to the
re#uirements of governing codes and regulations. $hore vertical
ban,s or slope ban,s bac, as re#uired for stability and safety.
Erect temporary barricades placed at least 1,23.mm 42 feet5 a!ay
from top of slopes, and provide temporary berms re#uired to
prevent slope erosion from !ater. Provide !arning lighting on
barricades during night hours.

B. Photographs and $urveys: Before starting +or, of this $ection,
Contractor shall employ and pay a commercial photographer to
prepare 367mm x 32.mm 4/ inches by 16 inches5 photographs of
existing improvements, public and private, ad*oining the site and
excavation area to record all existing conditions. Contractor8s
$urveyor shall survey, and resurvey at not more than monthly
intervals, all existing improvements to record any movements, and
shall also periodically survey lateral and vertical locations of tops
of shoring installations and lateral movement along entire length
of all runs of shoring. 'ile t!o sets of photographs and survey
records !ith Engineer for record purposes only.
PART 2 - PRODUCTS
2.01 MATERIALS

the civil engineer preparing the shoring dra!ings and calculations,
and approved by the Engineer.
E. $and: Clean sand from approved source, free from vegetable
matter, roc,, and other materials deleterious to the intended use.

PART 3 - EXECUTION
3.01 SHORING: Conform to the shoring dra!ings and calculations approved
by the re#uired Burisdictional Agency. 9aintain !ide beam at top of
slopes. Provide steel angle straps bet!een steel soldier beams if
t!isting occurs during the tie)bac, *ac,ing operations. 're#uently
inspect installed shoring and bracing for de;ections during construction.

spans of lagging, shall be coordinated !ith and based on soil
pressures determined by the Engineer.
1. rilled Placement: Beams may be placed in drilled
excavations, bottom length encased in concrete to the
extent recommended by the Engineer& !ea, concrete may
be used to encase the beams above the structural concrete
level.
3. riven Placement: Beams may be installed by driving to
the depth recommended by the $oils Engineer.
a. Cammer: Capacity e#ual to hammer manufacturer8s
recommendations for total !eight of beams and
subsurface materials to be encountered, but not less
than one foot)pound of energy per pound of beam.
%btain re#uired driving energy of hammer, except for
diesel hammers, by use of a heavy ram and a short
stro,e !ith lo! impact velocity. uring 0nal driving,
operate according to the hammer manufacturer8s
directions except operate diesel type at 0nal driving
at rate recommended by hammer manufacturer for
hard driving. Cammer and driving e#uipment,
including driving helmet, are sub*ect to approval of
the Engineer.
b. Procedure: rive beams !ith a steel helmet of the
proper type and si<e. Place no material bet!een the
hammer and helmet that diminishes energy delivery
to the cushion bloc, and helmet.
c. Penetration: rive beams to re#uired penetrations as
determined by the $oils Engineer. Conform to the
Engineer8s directions if refusal is obtained before
re#uired penetration is reached. Chec, all beams for
heave and re)drive as re#uired or directed.
d. +ater Betting: o not use !ater *etting !ithout the
prior !ritten approval of the Engineer in each case.
e. Pre)rilled Pilot Coles: rill pilot holes only as
directed by the Engineer.
B. Concrete $oldier Beams: Beams may be of reinforced concrete,
placed in drilled holes to the re#uired depth. Temporary casing
shall be installed as re#uired to prevent caving or sloughing during
drilling and concrete placement, and shall be !ithdra!n as
concrete is placed. "einforcing bar cages shall be as detailed on
civil engineer8s dra!ings. Concrete shall be placed in dry holes
!ith tremies or elephant trun,s and vibrated as placed. Deep the
concrete level above the bottom of the casing at all times.

C. =agging: Enstall lagging as excavation progresses, !ith solid
bearing on soldier beams and supports, and close contact bet!een
lagging edges. Ef caving occurs, 0ll voids behind the lagging !ith
grout or !ea, concrete pumped into place.
. Tie)Bac, Anchors: =ag, drill, grout, preload and@or test tie)bac,
anchors or bracing, and furnish re#uired testing e#uipment as
recommended and approved by the Engineer. Perform preloading
and testing under observation of the Engineer.
E. "emoval: "emove shoring and detension tie)bac, anchors as
re#uired except the soldier beams may be cut o( :16mm 43.
inches5 belo! the elevation of any ne! or existing construction,
piping, conduit, or other improvement in the shoring area. All
lagging shall be removed as bac,0lling in the excavation area
progresses. 'ill voids left by removals !ith compacted sand or pea
gravel bac,0ll.
3.02 CLEANING UP: "emove !aste and debris to a legal disposal area,
obtain the necessary hauling permits, and pay all dump charges and
fees. Prevent spillage of !aste on public streets.
