Patch cord certification
2014 Fluke Corporation. All rights reserved.
CHANNEL ADAPTERS
The channel measurement excludes the connection to the adapters
For patch cords, we want to measure that RJ45 connection
This is not a valid test
You are only measuring the cable
Patch cord testing is found in
- ANSI/TIA-568-C.2
- ISO/IEC 11801:2010 and IEC 61935-2
2014 Fluke Corporation. All rights reserved.
PATCH CORD ADAPTERS
The patch cord measurement includes the connection to the adapters
Using patch cord adapters, DSX includes that RJ45 connection
A special laboratory tested RJ45 Jack is used
- Called out in standards for patch cord certification
The patch cord limits are tighter than the Channel limits as well
2014 Fluke Corporation. All rights reserved.

The DSX-PC6A is not backward compatible with Cat 6 or 5e
* ANSI/TIA currently specifies a jack with a different performance to ISO/IEC.
However, ANSI/TIA is in the process of allowing the jack specified in ISO/IEC for patch
cord certification, so the DSX contains the proposed limits for Cat 6A testing
THREE PATCH CORD ADAPTERS
2014 Fluke Corporation. All rights reserved.
Why cant we use the patch cord adapter for channel testing too?
FEXT cannot be excluded using DSP techniques
Need an adapter with excellent FEXT
The patch cord adapter does not have excellent FEXT
- It must meet specific FEXT requirements of ANSI/TIA and IEC
The channel adapter has excellent FEXT
- But as a result, it has poor NEXT
- Thats ok, because it can be gated out using DSP techniques
WHY TWO ADAPTERS?
Excellent FEXT FEXT limited by standards requirement

WHAT IS ALIEN CROSSTALK?
Alien crosstalk is the coupling of noise from one link to the other
When a cable is surrounded by other cables, noise from those cables
will impact its ability to transmit data we call that Alien Crosstalk
The cable we wish to measure for Alien Crosstalk is called the
Disturbed (Victim) and the adjacent cables are called the Disturbers

ALIEN CROSSTALK INSTALLATION TESTING
ANSI/TIA-568-C.2 and ANSI/TIA-1152
- There is no text stating PS ANEXT and PS AACR-F testing is optional
- PS ANEXT and PS AACR-F are required for compliance
- Values and methodology are found in ANSI/TIA-568-C.2
ISO/IEC 11801:2010 and IEC 61935-1
- PS ANEXT and PS AACR-F is normative for field testing
- Specified in section A.2.11 if not met by design
- If the coupling attenuation of Class EA or F permanent links or CP links is at least
10 dB better than the corresponding channel coupling attenuation requirements
(see Clause 6), and Class FA permanent links or CP links are at least 25 dB better
than the corresponding channel coupling attenuation requirements (see Clause 6),
then the requirements of A.2.11 are met by design.
- No way for you to know the coupling attenuation, not a field test

Fiber testing
Tier 1 and Tier 2
2014 Fluke Corporation. All rights reserved.
TIER 1 AND TIER 2
Tier 1
- Often referred to as OLTS or Optical Loss Test Set
- Uses a source and power meter
- Reports the difference between power in and power out in dB
- Duplex (two fiber) testers can also measure length
Tier 2
- Often referred to as OTDR or Optical Time Domain Reflectometer testing
- Injects a series of light pulses into a fiber and measures the backscatter
returned to the OTDR port
- Single ended test but must be done in both directions
- Implies loss based on change in backscatter between events
- Depends on good reflectance which field polishing often fails to achieve

IMPORTANT SAFETY NOTE
Under NO circumstances should you ever look into a fiber
The wavelength being used cannot be seen by the naked eye
Light from an active fiber if powerful enough, can do permanent damage to
your eye sight
The equipment you are using today cannot do permanent damage to your
eye sight if exposed occasionally
If you are told a fiber is not active, treat it as if it is
NEVER stand in front of a fiber patch panel unless ALL of the fiber connectors
have a protective cap on them
Wash your hands BEFORE and AFTER going to the bathroom

APPLICATIONS LIMITED BY DISPERSION/LOSS
Modal Bandwidth (MBW)
- is the unit to classify dispersion in the cable
50 /125 m has less dispersion
- its core is smaller than 62.5/125 m fiber
Your loss may be lower than the allowed fixed loss, but if it exceeds
the length found here (IEEE 802.3) there may be errors on the network
IEEE 802.3ae specifies 400 m, cabling vendors may specify 550 m

MIXING MULTIMODE FIBERS
What happens when you connect a 62.5/125 m to a 50/125 m?
Many of the modes will disappear into the cladding forever!
There will be a significant loss (as large as 4 dB)
Also known as a coupling loss

CLEANING
Fiber testing is all about cleaning and inspecting
Without the appropriate cleaning
supplies AND inspection equipment,
you CANNOT test fiber
Dust in an office is typically
between 2.5 m and 10 m
All fibers should be inspected and
cleaned before being used, even if
they are brand new out of the bag
2014 Fluke Corporation. All rights reserved.
CLEANING KIT
Isopropyl Alcohol (IPA) is typically used
- It should be better than 98% (rubbing alcohol is 70%)
- Local pharmacy stocks no better than 91% (not good enough)
There are disadvantages to IPA
- Over time, absorbs water and is no longer 98%
- Will not remove non ionic compounds
- Tends to leave a residue behind if you are not careful
Hybrid cleaners are better, such as the Fluke Networks Fiber Optic Pen
There are significant advantages with these new hybrid cleaners
- Aggressive cleaner, better than IPA
- Evaporates very quickly, less likely to leave residue behind
- Has antistatic properties so dust in the air is less likely to be attracted to the end
face of the connector

Tier 2 Fiber Testing
(OTDR)
2014 Fluke Corporation. All rights reserved.
WHAT IS AN OTDR?
Optical measurements carried out using pulses of light.
Time Domain signal is plotted against time delay.
Reflectometer - signal were looking at is caused by reflections
(and scattering) in the fiber.
The OTDR launches a very short pulse of light into a fiber and then
looks at the very low levels of light which come back out of the
same end of the fiber.
This returned light comes from reflections where there is a change
of refractive index in the light path (called Fresnel reflections) and
from a scattering effect which takes place within the fiber called
Rayleigh Scattering.
2014 Fluke Corporation. All rights reserved.
WHAT IS AN OTDR?
The OTDR produces a trace of the returning light level against the
time delay compared to when the pulse of light was launched.
2014 Fluke Corporation. All rights reserved.
WHAT IS AN OTDR?
With suitable processing and interpretation, this trace can then be
used to provide information about every portion of the fiber being
measured
EventMap interprets the trace for you

Although the fiber is tested in the factory, it can be
