IMPULSE MANSLAUGHTER were

interviewed by Tom Comaro Jan

. 8,
1987.
Impulse Manslaughter are:
Karl Patton: vocals
Glen Herman: drums
Chris Hanley: guitar
Nick Stevens: bass
>+<<<<<<<<<<<<<<
Torn: Alright, are all of
you guys the
original members of Impulse
Manslaughter?
Karl :
No, we've been through about a
million bass players. For awhile, it was
like we would go through one guy a
week. Some would think they were too
talented to play in a hardcore band.
Most of them said they didn't get into
Billy Idol . On the other hand, we would
get these punk rock high school kids
who had talked their parents into buying
them a bass . They would come to one
of our practices to audition and freak
out on the stuff we were doing
. We
would get a call about a week later
saying his family was moving away.
Glen: This one dude came up to all of
our practices and was doing good. But
he had parents into heavy discipline.
They found out he had joined the band,
and they totally shit. One night we were
sitting around at our practice spot -
all of a sudden he door flys open and
this giant cop starts shouting at us . He
was yelling about how we were
corrupting the kid, and were destroyin
the U.S
. It was really funny to see this
terrified neanderthal standing up to
the vicious punk rockers . He was
frustrated that his kid wouldn't mo
the lawn or something
. That happened
Tom
: You don't look like a punk band
now. What about back then?
Chris
: No, we looked and dressed the
same as we do now, basically.
Glen
: Except we had real long hair back
then.
Karl: I used to own a skateboard, never
had a mohawk though.
Tom: Do you play out a lot in Chicago?
Glen
: No, occasionally.
Karl : We are the hated.
Glen: Most people in Chicago though
we were a
joke band, some still d
laughter) . Still, we have played out
and on the road a lot, and have a
following about the country
. I guess.
Most of the Chicago bands that
criticize us haven't even played outside
of Illinois
. They just have that rock-star
attitude.
Chris: There were a lot of great bands
from here that most people will
probably never get a chance to be
xposed to!
om: Tell me about the E.P
.?
len
: It's called
; "Burn One Naked and
Nuke It", and it's fast, aggressive. We
recorded it at Hit City. Most of the
tunes we still play live.
Chris: We arn't a speedcore band
nymore, it's more punk - thrash
aterial.
art: Even when we first started out,
we never actually played metal tunes.
Glen: Me and Karl are into old
Motorhead stuff a lot. People tell us
hat our new songs are similar to
English stuff like; Conflict, Chaos UK,
Icon of Filth, Varukers etc
...
Chris: We still have retained the brutal
ocals, though. One of our greatest
influences is the old singer of Rattus
(laughter).
Tom: So alot of your new stuff is
ifferent than the EP right?
Glen: Yes, but it's still fast.
Chris: We needed more variety in the
set because it was getting boring, the
intensity wasn't there.
Karl: I like songs that jump out at you!
Stuff that damages the nerves.
Glen: A regular zoomfest, just ask
Pushead!
Torn: Do you still gig in the midwest?
Karl : We still love playing small town
shows! We will go just about
anyplace
that our crippled van will take us. We'v
put our lives on the line more than
once
. Truckers do their best to get rid
of us.
Tom: Sounds fun. When are you goin
on the road again?
Glen: Hopefully
this summer, It will
be coast to coast. Arrgghhh! Then
maybe a trip overseas . Seriously!
Karl : It depends on how much money
we are willing to loose. Actually touring
is cool
. Sleeping in vans and on peoples
floors sucks!
Torn: Tell me
about the California
shows?
Karl : It went well, we got fucked
round with a couple of times
. At th
Farm is S
.F. we played at 2:30 Am to
about 50 people, they were cleaning
the place up while we were playing
.
Everyone still conscious said we blazed. 'r
Chris
: We don't get pissed off to easily,
but we felt
cheated.
Glen:
Tim Y and everyone else
at MRR
were cool enought to put us up for
a
few days. They set up
a killer show at
the Warehouse
. We played, so did
AMQA from Seattle and the place
rocked. It turned out better than we
could have imagined.
Nick: Southern California was a
different story man. The van broke
down outside of Fresno so we had to
hitch hike to L.A.. We went to some
party on the wrong side of town and
the next thing we knew a mexican
street gang was stealing our equipment.
It was the worst.
Glen: Bob of Fartblossom records who
was unfortunate enough to volunteer
to help us get around, had his car
smashed up. We got pretty desperate
when we saw them pull out the knives.
Karl
:
Gangs suck. This wasn't the first
time they fucked us over.
Tom:
If anything, what did you tike
most about Southern California?
Glen:
The girls!!
Tom: When can we expect he LP?
Chris: By the summer.
Nick: We have to find a label . Right
now we're broke. We got a couple of
offers, which is cool . Hey anyone, send
us a donation!
Torn
: I heard you say that some bands
outside the thrash scene have
influenced you.
Chris: Neubaten, Swans, Neos, Amebix,
Birthday Party, Flipper, Conflict,
Husker Du.
Torn: Tall me about the future of the
band.
Glen: Albums, tour, new van.
Nick: I need a newguitar though, man!
Hey what about the idealistic,
philosophical question I've been waiting
for??????
