1. Using the principles of control volume analysis derive the thrust equation for Turbofan (fan
exhausted)

2. A turbofan operates at sealevel and moves at 269.7 m/s. It ingests 121.1 kg/s of air into the
core and five times this amount into the fan, which all exhausts through the fan exhaust. The
fuel flow is negligible. The exit areas of the fan and core are 1.580 and 1.704 m
2
, respectively.
The exit pressures from the fan and core are 154.4 and 144.8 kPa respectively. The exhaust
velocities from the fan and core are 328.6 and 362.7 m/s respectively. Find the thrust.

3. A turboprop operates at sea level and moves at 238.65 m/s. It ingests 13.6 kg/s of air and has
negligible fuel flow. The area of the exit is 0.187 m
2
.The exit pressure is 14.7 psia, and the exit
velocity is 190.5 m/s. The thrust from the propeller is 11.196 kN. Find the total developed
thrust.

4. A turbofan operates at 7315 m where T
a
= 240.6 K, P
a
= 5.69 psia and moves at Mach 0.70. It has
a bypass ratio of 3.00, and all of this air exhausts through the fan nozzle. The fuel flow is 1.71
kg/s. The exit areas of the fan and core are 0.8122 and 0.8400 m
2
, respectively. The exit
pressures from the fan and core are 9.74 and 5.69 psia, respectively. The exhaust velocities from
the fan and core are 349.3 and 453.8 m/s, respectively. The thrust is 69.107 kN. Find the air
mass flow rate in the core. Do this problem for two conditions: first consider the fuel flow to be
negligible; then, include the effect of finite fuel flow.

5. A ramjet operates at 15240 m where T
a
= 216.67 K, P
a
= 1.60 psia and moves at Mach 4. It
ingests 40.8 kg/s of air and has a fuel flow of 1.70 kg/s. The diameter of the exit is 31.7 in. The
exit pressure is 1.60 psia, and the exit velocity is 1745.3 m/s. Find the developed thrust and
TSFC.

6. An advanced fighter engine operating at Mach 0.8 and 10 km altitude has the following
performance data and uses a fuel with calorific value = 43800 kJ/Kg.
F = 50 kN,
a
= 45 kg/s,
f
= 2.65 kg/s
Determine (a) Specific Thrust & Dimensionless Thrust (local speed of sound = 299.5 m/s), (b)
TSFC, (c) exhaust velocity, u
e
, (d) thermal efficiency, (e) propulsive efficiency, (f) overall
efficiency (P
exit
= P
ambient
)

7. Conduct a detailed survey on turbojet, turbofan and turboprop engines
a. its history and development till date, various engines from different manufacturers
b. comparison of thrust and performance parameters (TSFC, efficiencies) of turbojet,
turbofan and turboprop from all the existing manufacturers
