INTRODUCTION

Department of Architecture

Practical Training Coordinator
o The School will nominate a Coordinator throughout your period of practical
training. She/he will help to ensure that the student get the most suitable
experience and will countersign your log sheets at convenient intervals.

o The Coordinator will give their assessment based on the log book and report
submitted by the student.

Practical Training Supervisor
o When working in an architects office you should have a Supervisor who has
a responsibility for you training. She will sign your log sheets every four
weeks, talk over your work and make such adjustment as are needed. With
her help you should aim to obtain over the three months the range of
experience laid down.

o To give final evaluation on the students performance and abilities throughout
the practical training duration.

Practical Training Student
Students should fulfil period confirm by the department/university.

Students should follow the instructions given by responsible officer and
visiting officer.

Students are not allowed to change training place without permission from the
department.

Students should fulfil their log book everyday and to be certified by the officer-
in-charge.

It is the students responsibility to make the entries of the logbook and keep it
up to date.

All entries should be clear and concise and the supervising officer must sign
the sheets.

Please make sure that the logbook is available at your place of work during
training.

Entries must be made within a week of the work to which they referred to.

Students are bound to all the rules and discipline practiced by the department /
agencies /firms / practitioner.

Students are not allowed to take leave.

The book must be landed in to the Departments Coordinator for retention on
your return to IIUM or after the completion of the approved duration of
practical training.

1.0 INTRODUCTION

Aims of the Practical Training Scheme

The primary aim eg the scheme for practical training is to enable students to
gain the various range of practical experience, which will fit them for their
likely responsibility immediately after qualification.
To gain an effective system of training in architects offices.
To encourage more contact with other members of the building team such as
builders, building manufacturers, quantity surveyors, engineers and planners.
To expose students to the professional environment and implementing all the
knowledge gained during their study.
To develop students personality and skill.
To fill-up a log book which record the experience gained.

Purpose of the log sheets
To make the student and the employer aware of the range of work with which
the student should be familiar on qualification.
To provide a firework in which to record this experience throughout the six
months period of practical training.
To reveal this experience to the Department Practical Training Coordinator in
a clear and compact way as possible.

2.0 THE LOG SHEETS

P.T.1 Log Sheets

Log sheets are intended for experience in architects officer and experience
with other members of the building team such as builders, building
manufacturers, quantity surveyors, engineer and planners. The students should
try to cover as wide field as possible.

You should also familiarize yourself with planning application procedures for
all types of planning approvals and make appointment to interview planning
officers on specific application. Involvement in the design at the design states
is of invaluable experience. Preparation of building plans for submission for
building by law approval. It is hoped that most of your experience can be
gained on a few schemes.

Equally, you should try not to spend too long on one aspect of a big job. Your
aim should be to build up your experience gradually and to recognize the
limitation of your knowledge in the three months.


P.T.2 Diary

Diary sheets are incorporated facing each log sheet and they should be used to
record points of interest arising from your experience recorded in the log
sheets.

3.0 GUIDELINES & INSTRUCTIONS

Periods of Practical Training
The period of practical is three months. Period of practical should be regarded
as an integral part of education and preparation for qualification. The schools
can play a vital part this integration by the advice they offer about the most
suitable kinds of office and experience for each student and the links they
maintain with offices and with individual students while they are gaining this
experience. However good these arrangements are the students still has the
responsibility to use his own initiative in making the best use of his
opportunities and for preparing himself adequately for returning to their final
year in architectural studies.

Method of Evaluation

The practical training will be evaluated as follow :

i) Attendance - 20%
ii) Log book / Report - 40%
iii) Supervisors evaluation - 20%
iv) Coordinators evaluation - 20%

Total - 100%

ZSR Archi Ventures serves a good variety of clients from the public and private
sectors. We take pride in having clients who has given us multiple projects over the
years. As we strive to grow ZSR Design Group into a respectable design team, we
hold very dearly to our principles in conducting our practice. We produce works
which we can be proud of, we manage our projects the best we can to ensure clients
objectives are met and we provide opportunities to our team members to advance
their careers and broaden their horizon.

The next priorities for ZSR Design Groupwill be participation in design competition
and involvement in international projects

DIRECTORS

Ar. Norzaini Mufti is an Alumni of Sekolah Alam Shah, a fully residential
Government school in Kuala Lumpur. A pioneer student of KPP/ITM MUCIA
program and obtained his Associate Degree from Indiana University, Bachelor of
Environmental Design from Texas A&M University, College Station and Master of
Architecture from The University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, USA. Employed at FD
Architects Partnership for seven years and became the Managing Director of
Zenithal Creative Works sendirian berhad, a design consultancy firm, in year 2000.
Zaini became registered as a Professional Architect and became Principal of Zaini
Mufti Architect in 2004. Z&SR Architectural Ventures sendirian berhad began its
operation in 2006 and Zaini was one of the two founding Directors.


Ar. Syed Muhammad Radhi Syed Sakkaf is an Alumni of MARA Science Junior
College, Kuala Terengganu and obtained his Bach. of Art in Architecture (RIBA Part
1) and Diploma in Architecture (RIBA Part 2) from University of Sheffield, United
Kingdom. Syed Radhi holds a Certificate in Project Management and is a Green
Building Facilitator. Syeds working experience spans over twenty years and
includes stints at Department of Architecture, Barnsley Metropolitan Borough
Council, Panca Indera Arkitek, the Architectural Network, Bina Struktur sendirian
berhad and RAM Architect.

ZSR Design Archi Ventures now employs 20 staff and operate from a 3,000 square
feet premise. Well equipped with all the essentials needed to serve our clients in an
efficient and timely manner.

While undergoing training in Z&SR Archi Ventures, the works have been done
mostly involved on schematic design phase along these 3 months. Apart of this, I
help in preparing presentation board for bid proposal. Each task and the work done
during the 3 months of training in the firm to be recorded.This is a summary of task
done by week to week.


TASKS SUMMARY

WEEK 1 (02/6/2014 06/6/2014)
1. Report upon the firm of Z&SR Archi Ventures at 8.30 am and being brief by Ar.
Syed Muhammad Radhi on Pulau Indah East 9 (Riverfront Development)
2. Task given regarding PIE 9 including
i. Produce masterplan design for coming presentation 19/6/2014
ii. Report tabulation for quantity surveyor as reference for cost estimation
iii. Basic ground floor plan
iv. 3d model and rendered perspective
3. The principal architect gave an explanation about the project and suggests
referring local authorities requirement and example riverfront developement as
reference.
4. Design works start with brainstorming propose master plan layout.

WEEK 2 (08/6/2014 12/6/2014)
1. Continue designing masterplan plan layout and produce 3d model in same time to
get suitable floor lavel with the unit number and area given by the client.
2. Consult finalized form with Principal Architect.
3. Form is finalized, based on that tabulation report is produce to be submitted to qs
as their reference.

WEEK 3 (15/6/2014 19/6/2014)
1. Facade design is proposed and finalized
2. Softscape and hardscape of masterplan is designed to create connectivity between
lots
3. 3d is finalized and prepared for architectural rendering.
4. Slide presentation is prepared with the latest tabulation report
5. Went to meeting with Ar. Syed Muhammad Radhi for presentation at Kumpulan
Hartanah Selangor, Plaza Peransang, Shah Alam

WEEK 4 (22/6/2014 26/6/2014)
1. Assisting Architect Juliana in updating 3d model of Dewan Melawar at Taman
Changkat
2. Few ammendment need to be done after consultation session with client.
3. Proceed with architectural rendering with photomontage of existing site

WEEK 5 (29/6/2014 03/7/2014)
1. Being brief by Ar. Hilmi on next project regarding Majlis Agama Islam Selangor
(MAIS) Youth Centre located at Jalan Othman, Petaling Jaya. with supervision
by Achitect Azrul Muhammad.
2. Task give regarding this project :
i. Finalizing all floor plan based on project brief by client.
ii. Produce completed 3d model and architectural rendering within time
given


WEEK 6 (06/7/2014 10/7/2014)
1. Assisting Architect Izzati to produce schematic design of:
i. Behrang Visitor Centre
2. Discuss with Architect Izzati on new propose form and facade of Behrang Visitor
Centre

WEEK 7 (13/7/2014 17/7/2014)
1. Continue assisting Architect Izzati to produce schematic design of
i. Interior of Acdisch Dobby, Bukit Jelutong
ii. Interior of Acdisch Dobby, Petaling Jaya
2. Consult Schematic Design with Ar. Norzaini Mufti regarding new facade of
Behrang
Visitors Centre and new shelving system proposed in both interior of Acdish
Dobby


WEEK 8 (20/7/2014 24/7/2014)
1. Few adjustment need to be done after consult with Ar. Norzaini Mufti
2. All design is finalized and proceed to architectural rendering for presentation to
client.
3. During presentation, few ammendment need to be done based on client
requirements.
4. Director Ar. Norzaini Mufti brief on new project located at Percint 11 zone 7c,
Putrajaya which consist of 425 residential units.

WEEK 9 (27/7/2014 31/7/2014)
1. Eid Fitri Holiday in a week.


WEEK 10 (03/8/2014 07/8/2014)
1. Exploring new approach of floor plan and proposed 5 other different floor plans
that suits for medium range of condominium.
2. Consult with Architect Azrul on each floor plan design.
3. Few proposed floor is choosen to be detailed up.
4. Consult with Ar. Norzaini Mufti regarding proposed floor plan to be use in
condominium block layout.

WEEK 11 (10/8/2014 14/8/2014)
1. focusing on designing block layout of condominium.
2. 5 proposed block layout is selected to be detail up and 3d modelled.
3. From that 2 proposed layout is selected and detailed up with faade while 3 other
just a massing and effeciency calculation

WEEK 12 (17/8/2014 21/6/2014)
1. Collaborating with Architect Azrul in finalizing faade design of 2 selected
options.
2. Produce architectural rendering for presentation
3. Compose board for submission.

WEEK 13 (24/8/2014 1/9/2014)
1. Assist Architect Juliana for Dewan Melewar ammendment after few adjustment
need to be done at:
i. Faade
ii. Levelling
iii. Floor plan
2. Assist Architect Azrul in designing 2 options of MKH Avenue, Kajang signage.

Learning outcomes:

i. For first time to produce tabulation report for Quantity Surveyor in
estimating cost of development as well as report for final presentation
ii. Expose to calculation method of tabulation report.
iii. Learn formula technique in Microsoft Excell to make calculation
easier

4. SKETCHUP 3D MODEL & RENDERING
i. Able to know new skill of sketch up in producing small size skp file
to make our work more easy
ii. Learn few shortcuts and grouping method to have more efficient
workflow

5. OTHER
i. Did some research regarding waterfront development, landscape
architecture, and connctivity in masterplan design.
ii. Produced slide for presentation and involded in meeting with client

Learning outcomes:

1. DBKL REQUIREMENT
i. Able to know the requirement of DBKL in perspective submission.
ii. Purpose of 4 elevation perspectives is to have more information on how
the faade will be loolike when it was constructed rather than normal
elevation.
iii. Night rendering is show the propose lighting in our design.

ii. Hierarchy of room and toilet sizes
iii. Space arrangement and minimum size of circulation


4. LAYOUT BLOCK DESIGN
i. Understand special requirement set by client (distance between block,
maximum height permitted, public facilities provided.etc)
ii. Explore alternative options to understand strenght and weakness of
each layout.
iii. Finalize five layouts and provide tabulation report for each layout
And understand the important of efficiency in highrise design.

i. Explore new facade design that can be applied in proposal
ii. Aware on new material that can be applied in design
