Te Nelson Food Cupboard is hosting a unique and
exciting community event called Chew on Tis to co-
incide with Homelessness Action Week and World Food
Day, October 16. Chew on Tis is a challenge to the
community to discover what it is like to have a food budget
similar to somebody living in poverty. It is designed to
highlight the inadequacies of current Provincial allowan-
ces for social assistance, disability pensions and minimum
wage, and raise awareness around what it is like to have
to rely on food banks and other social agencies for food.
You may have started to see our advertising around
town, says Food Cupboard Coordinator Kim Charlesworth,
We are encouraging the entire community to participate
through the Do the Math online survey at www.foodcup-
board.org/chew-on-this/. It will make you think about what
you would need to make ends meet if your situation changed
and you had to rely on social assistance by comparing your
results to what a person making minimum wage, or on dis-
ability or social assistance receives each month.
We have also challenged specifc community leaders to
eat for eight days like many of our Food Cupboard cus-
tomers do on only what they receive from food banks
and Our Daily Bread.
Te kick-of luncheon for the Community Leader Chal-
lenge will be October 16 at Our Daily Bread with Food
Cupboard customers sharing their experiences with the
participants of living in poverty and trying to eat.
Te Wrap Up and Community Awareness Celebration
will be October 23 at 6 pm at the Nelson United Church.
Te public is welcome to attend and enjoy a delicious local
harvest dinner celebrating simple but nutritious cooking
the kind that could be enjoyed with ingredients from
the Food Cupboard.

hold cash, and be a whole lot friendlier to both Old Man
Winter and Mother Nature, come and take in the second
annual Nelson Green Home and Energy Show. Tere will
be over 30 sustainable and conventional building special-
ists on hand to help you explore the world of green build-
ing products. Tis free event, sponsored by Nelson Hy-
dros EcoSave program, Columbia Basin Trust, the West
Kootenay EcoSociety and the Juice FM, will take place at
the Prestige Lakeside Resort on Wednesday, October 15
from 6:30 pm to 9 pm.
Last year we had over 300 come out to learn about
greener options for building, renovating and improving
energy ef ciency, says EcoSave Program Coordinator
Carmen Proctor, Tis year we will have all of that again
plus we have added electric transportation.

Cynthia Cooper, 93, of Kaslo, BC passed on Wednesday
morning, October 8, 2014 at the Victorian Community
Health Centre. She was born in Seattle, Washington in
May, 1921 to parents Jasper and Mae Spilman
and her older brother Vincent.
Cynthia married Charles Cooper in February 1945 in
Seattle. Tey moved to Montana and eventually moved to
Kaslo in 1967. Cynthia worked in Kaslo as the Kaslo School
(JV Humphries) secretary with principal Jack Humphries
and teacher Aya Higashi. Afer retiring from the school, she
continued her hobbies of learning, writing and photography
as well as fowers and gardening. She spent a great deal of
time at, and enjoyed Selkirk College.
Survived by sons Lucas and Ken; grandchildren Orion,
Bryce, Letitia, Roland and Darnell; great-granddaughters
Aliana (Bryce) and Emma (Letitia). And her loyal
chihuahua companion Lindy Lou. Also of importance in
her life were Keith Edwards and nephew Gary Spilman;
Edward, Deyanne and Mariah Davies.
A memorial gathering will be held at the Kaslo Legion,
Sunday, October 19th, 2014 at 2:00 pm.

Susan Stevenson
1948-2014
We are saddened by the death
of Susan Stevenson of Winlaw.
Susan died Friday, August 29
th

in the Nelson hospital, where
she had been admitted August
25
th
. She had been living with
cancer over the past 8 months
but continued to fulfll her roles
as Clerk of Canadian Quakers until
late August. Both Susan and her
husband David have felt blessed
in the support through this journey by family, the local community, and the
health care system. David treasured each of his 43 years with Susan.
Those of us who have known and worked with Susan over the years will
greatly miss her her groundedness, her engagement in the Quaker
community, and her love of life and the beauty of the biodiversity around her.
As a published forest wildlife ecologist Susan played an instrumental role in
joining UNBC faculty, students, industry, and other community partners in
research and education projects during the 35 years she and David lived in
Prince George. Her work with the BC Assoc. of Professional Biologists played
an important role in developing standards of professional practice and
introducing students to career possibilities.
Susan is survived by her husband David, her sons Samuel and Peter, and her
sister Marjorie. A memorial to celebrate Susans life will be held in Winlaw.

NaNoWriMo Is Coming
Te largest writing event in the world returns to the
Kootenays this November, when National Novel Writing
Month (NaNoWriMo) participants around the globe hit
their keyboards. Te challenge to write 50,000 words of
a novel in 30 days.
NaNoWriMo challenges writers, says NaNo Muni-
cipal co-Liaison Deb OKeefe.Te best way to learn to
write a novel is by plunging in and just doing it!
Tere are no entry fees, no judges, no prizes. Just a fun,
seat-of-your-pants approach to fnally getting that novel
written. Last year, 63 Kootenay residents joined 400,000
people worldwide (including one very chilly writer at
Antarcticas McMurdo Station) who wrote their stories in
November. Typing away at home, in cofee shops or in
libraries, those 63 intrepid writers managed to produce a
staggering collective total of 1,524,426 words.
Well be making things more exciting this year, says
Karina Kram, the Kootenays veteran Municipal Liaison
for NaNoWriMo. Tanks to the NaNo websites Koo-
tenays Regional Forum, were able to virtually connect
with participants throughout November. Tis year on the
forum therell be online chats, weekly draws for prizes,
writing challenges lots to make NaNoWriMo fun for the
whole Kootenays.
OKeefe agrees. NaNo writers in the region are always
spread out. Te regional forum keeps us all connected.
Last year, someone in Rossland won our
NaNo Champion mug for most words written
by a Kootenay writer. Tis year, we want to get
even more people from more places involved.
Although NaNoWriMo emphasizes crea-
tivity over literary masterpiece, more than
250 projects begun during NaNoWriMo have
gone on to become published works, includ-
ing bestsellers such as Water for Elephants
by Sara Gruen, and Te Night Circus by Erin

Celebrate Trash!
Its Trash to Treasure time again! Te RDCKs semi-an-
nual celebration of waste reduction is happening on
Saturday, October 18. Tis one-day event provides par-
ticipants with an opportunity to give away used items to
those who may fnd value in them. Tis is also a chance
for residents to search their community for their neigh-
bours unwanted treasures.
On October 18, residents are encouraged to place any
gently-used, unwanted household goods together at the
front of their property in a location that can be safely ac-
cessed by treasure hunters. A sign should clearly indicate
which items are available to take home. By 4 pm the same
day all remaining items should be gathered up and taken
inside. Please keep your community and roadways clean
by removing unwanted items!

organic chocolate is sourced directly from small farmer
cooperatives, who are paid a better price for their prod-
uct and who adhere to better working conditions and en-
vironmental standards.
Fair Trade Halloween kits, containing 30 delicious fair
trade, organic Camino chocolates and Fair Trade info

children around the world, by raising awareness about
production practices behind conventional chocolate, and

Over half the worlds cocoa is produced in West Africa,
yet many of the communities involved with conventional
cocoa production see very little of the proft generated by
consumption in North America. Te cocoa farmers are
ofen taken advantage of due to their lack of knowledge
and resources. In addition to heavy pesticide use, UNICEF
has documented the use of child labour sometimes using
traf cked children who are paid little or no wages, work
in dangerous conditions, and have never tasted chocolate.

3.5 years old and is a neutered white husky cross.
Bello is a big boy who really wants a home where he will be given a lot of
attention and affection. He has lived inside a home but does enjoy being
outdoors. He was a bit of an escape artist in his last home, so will need a tall
fenced yard or acreage. He is a loyal boy who would also benefit from some
obedience training. His previous owners mentioned he liked other respectful
dogs, and didnt mind cats. His previous home also had two ducks.

Te Real Inspector Hound
A Nelson youth theatre production of the one-act play
Te Real Inspector Hound will open Friday, October 24
at 7 pm at Central School, 811 Stanley Street, in Nelson.
Two performances will be held on Saturday, October 25 at
4 pm and 7 pm as well.
A country house weekend is the perfect setting for re-
venge in this humorous and quirky whodunit by Tom
Stoppard. Mystery bufs will enjoy the sly references to
Agatha Christie and Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. Stoppard
also takes aim at the narcissistic world of theatre criticism
and theatre politics.
Te play will feature actors ages 14-19 including Nemia
Darwel, James Tucker, Soleil Babcock, Jamie Hunter, Se-

New plans are to be presented at Nelson Civic Teatres
second AGM. Its a local success story of community faith,

Trails Rock Walls

some of Trails rock walls. Twelve of them, commemorat-
ing Trails stonemasons, have been installed on rock walls
around Trail at least one on each of 10 rock wall walking
routes. Te Rock Wall Project Entusiastico Society invites
you to attend the Community Dedication Ceremony to
mark this auspicious occasion, at the Gyro Park gazebo on

Grant Lawrence Comes
To Te Langham
Join Grant Lawrence and singer Jill Barber for an even-
ing of entertainment at the Langham on Monday, October
20, at 7 pm. Lawrence will share stories from his books,
show slides and a short flm, and talk about his conficted
yet ultimately positive relationship with hockey. Jill
Barber, a celebrated jazz singer, will also perform.
In addition to being a CBC host, an eminent indie-rock
alumnus, and the award-winning author of the best-sell-
ing book, Adventures in Solitude: What Not to Wear to a
Nude Potluck and Other Stories from Desolation Sound,
Grant Lawrence has another claim to fame: as a baby, he
spent part of a plane ride from Toronto to Montral on
Bobby Orrs lap. Grant, his parents, Orr and the rest of the
Canadian hockey team were on their way to Game 3 of
the famous Summit Series between the Soviet Union and
Canada in 1972, during the height of the Cold War. It was
at this tender age that Grants lifelong entanglement with
hockey began.
Grant Lawrences most recent book, Te Lonely End of
the Rink: Confessions of a Reluctant Goalie (Douglas &
McIntyre, $26.95) is an ingenious combination of hock-
ey lore, Canadian music history and personal anecdotes.
Te book instantly hit the national bestseller list on its re-
lease in October 2013. It is a hilarious account of hockeys
infuence throughout Lawrences life: frst when he was
a knee-brace-wearing bully-magnet, tormented by the
hockey-obsessed jocks at his school; then as a rock star
touring the country with his band, Te Smugglers; and
fnally, when he became a CBC broadcaster and journal-
ist who found striking connections between the worlds of
hockey and music.
Tis free event is presented by the Kootenay Library
Federation and the Kaslo & District Public Library. For

Below ground level deep in the Selkirk Mountains

Cody Caves Provincial Park is home to the 1.6 km cave
system located above Ainsworth Hot Springs and Koote-
nay Lake. It is believed the labyrinth of cave passageways
still withhold secrets which have yet to be discovered, be-
yond the travelled paths currently explored today.
Guided tours will soon be available year round to mar-
vel at the intricate ice formations that uniquely re-form

To: Te Children Of Gaza
Please join us on Sunday, October 19 from 6 to 8 pm for
To: the Children of Gaza, a traditional Palestinian family
dinner and cultural event that will be held in the Nelson
United Church. Te evening, which will include a silent
auction, will raise funds to provide emergency medical
care and medical supplies for children in Gaza, to be ad-
ministered through the Department of Services to Pales-
tinian Refugees Gaza Area Committee.
Tis charity provides emergency health care for the most
vulnerable communities in Gaza. Staf and volunteers live
in and work with the everyday reality of the current hu-
manitarian crisis facing Palestinians. Proceeds from the
event will assist highly skilled local and international doc-
tors and emergency health care workers in the treatment
of these children.
Advance tickets are available at Otter Books and
Manaeesh Restaurant, $35 for adults and $20 for children
thirteen years and under. Tickets will also be available at
the door starting at 5:30 pm.
Event partners include NEON, KAIROS, Amnesty
International (Nelson Chapter) and the Nelson United
Church, and the radio sponsor Kootenay Co-op Radio.
Buy Goodies ... See Fireworks
Te Crescent Valley Fire Department (CVFD) will be
holding its annual bake sale at the South Slocan branch of
the Kootenay Savings Credit Union on Friday, October 17.
Te proceeds of the bake sale are the primary fundraiser
for the annual CVFD Halloween freworks show.
Additional funding is provided by donations from lo-
cal businesses and residents. Each year, for more than 10
years, the CVFD has been putting on a huge freworks
display at the Fire Department, with over $1,500 worth
of freworks shot of last year. Hot chocolate, candy, and
a costume contest also occur in the fre hall, along with
tours of the fre engine and other equipment.
Te bake sale will be running all day during the nor-
mal Credit Union hours. For more information, or if you

Not Your Garbage, Please
Te Victorian Hospital of Kaslo Auxiliary Society rais-
es money at the Trif Store for the health and well-being
of the community. We like to recycle, re-use and reduce
waste but this does not include dealing with peoples gar-
bage. Recently many items have been lef outside the store
that should have gone straight to the transfer station.
Te VHKAS has to spend money to deal with garbage,
using up money that could have gone to support our com-
munity. Our Store is stafed entirely by volunteers who do
not have the time or desire to sort garbage, bag garbage, or
drive garbage to the transfer station, or to Nelson for re-
cycling. We truly appreciate the donations of clean items
in good, working condition that we can sell, but our store
space is very limited. For instance, we cannot take large
items televisions, old microwaves, computers or furni-
ture. Please consider this when dropping of anything at
the store, or check with a staf member. Tank you.
