INTRODUCTION 1 Work in pairs. Discuss the questions.
Which social media sites do you use?
What do you use themfor? Here are some ideas.
Facebook fnding out what other people are doing
Twitter telling people about events
Flickr sharing information and photos with friends
What do you know about the people in the photos?
2 Read the article about Facebook. Answer the questions.
1 Who started Facebook?
2 What was Harvard Connection? Whose idea was it?
3 What did Cameron and Tyler Winklevoss think Zuckerberg did?
4 Was Facebook successful at frst?
5 How many Facebook users were there in 2012?
3 Work in pairs. Discuss the questions.
1 Do you think Facebook will continue to be popular? Why?
2 Which websites are competition for Facebook? Which are the most popular
social media sites in your country?
Facebook is a social networking service used to exchange messages. You can also
create common-interest user groups, and pages for events and organizations.
Mark Zuckerberg had the idea for Facebook in 2003 while he was studying at
Harvard University. The original name was Facemash. At the same time, three
other students, Cameron and Tyler Winklevoss and Divya Narendra, were working
on a similar site called HarvardConnection.com. Zuckerberg was working on his
idea, when Cameron and Tyler asked himto help themwith their website. For a
while, Zuckerberg worked on both projects. The Winklevosses believed that while
Zuckerberg was working for them, he used some of the HarvardConnection ideas
to build his own site.
In 2004, Zuckerberg launched Thefacebook and within the frst month, more than
half of the undergraduate students at Harvard were using the site. The name later
changed to Facebook and became hugely popular.
In 2012, Facebook had over 900 million active users and the average Facebook
user had over 200 friends.

2 What will happen to tourist destinations in the future? Give some reasons
and examples.
2 5.1 Listen to a business analyst talk about the efects and future of tourism
and answer the questions.
1 What is the prediction for Venice in 2046?
2 How can the Venice problembe solved?
3 What problemdo farmers face in the south of Spain?
4 What is the solution to the problemin Spain?
5 Te Maldives face which two problems?

c too many divers and not enough fsh
3 5.2 Listen to the second part of the interview and answer the questions.
1 How does air travel afect the environment?
2 Is the global tourismindustry likely to expand or contract in the next
20to30years?
3 What can airline companies do to reduce carbon emissions?
The tourist industry is booming, creating jobs and much-needed
income for poorer countries. At the same time, it is having a
disastrous efect on some of our favourite destinations. What
does the future hold for the destinations and thetourists?
1 Overcrowding will force cities to limit tourist numbers.
2 Traditional summer holiday destinations will become too hot.
Drought will mean severe limits on water supply.
3 By 2030, many ecosystems will have degraded or be at risk
due to climate change: coral reefs, coastal wetlands, forests,
and glaciers.
What can we do to make sure that we can still enjoy travelling
without damaging these fragile environments?
