B
lack Opal and Sapphire, two of
The Jewel Boxs restaurants, have
undergone a facelift to make way for
a brand-new dining concept, Spuds
& Aprons. The clean, relaxed space,
divided into air-conditioned and
alfresco dining sections, is a departure
from the opulence of its predecessors,
distinguished by its use of industrial
lighting, brightly-colored furniture and
quirky chalkboard art. But what really
adds to its appeal is the spectacular view
of the lush surrounds of Mount Faber,
thanks to foor-to-ceiling windows and
the breezy layout of its alfresco area.
Chill-out ambiance aside, Spuds
& Aprons offers a repertoire of
international and modern-Asian comfort
foodno fancy, dainty plates here. For
starters, dont miss indulgent snacks like
Wicked Fries & Gravy (doused with
hot gravy and six types of cheese), Chilli
Crab in a Tux, Homemade Chicken Liver
Pate and the Crispy White Bait Salad.
Those looking to fll up should give
hearty mains like Tobiko Crusted Cod
Fillet, Oven-Roasted Mustard Marinated
Chicken and Grilled Char Siew Lam
Rack, all of which are accompanied
with a spud-y side dish, a go. There are
also local lunch favors to be had, with
dishes like Singapore Curry Chicken,
Singapore Laksa, and XO Fish Noodle
Soup, promising to please the palates
of locals and tourists alike. To fnish up,
order the Jar of Happiness (consisting of
shortbread biscuits, mixed berries, ice-
cream and warm berry compote) and
the Varlhona Chocolate Fatal Attraction
that combines chocolate mousse,
pudding, brownie and ice cream, for
some after dinner satisfaction.
Stay on afterwards to chill out with
drinks till late at this cozy spot. Beer
lovers can indulge in ice cold beer,
such as Corona, Heineken, Tiger and
Grimsbergen thats chilled to minus
fve degrees, while fun concoctions
like Ring a Bellini and James Bond Tini
with Jello Bomb will go down well with
cocktail lovers. Plus, look out for service
crew sporting Aprons (used to activate
promotions such as Happy Hour) with
cheeky messages that reads The doctor
says I need glasses.
All in all, Spuds & Aprons is a wicked
choice for food junkies who want to get
together, eat and drink without guilt, and
get high on the wonderful ambiance at
the top of the hill at Mount Faber.

Teochew cuisine is well-known
for being the healthier choice due
its low fat, salt and sugar content,
and this style of cooking is kept
in mind even for the Cantonese
creations at this acclaimed eatery.
Meals are best complemented
with a glass of vino, straight from

Te Sultan Hotels new restaurant is a 40 seat French eatery (in the
space formerly occupied by Moroccan establishment Pasha) helmed by
chef Jason Wong, who served for seven years as head chef of Bistro Petit
Salut at Holland Village. Outftted with velvety upholstered chairs,
purple chandeliers and pretty mosaic-tiled foors, the dimly lit spot
is rather romantic. Tuck into a comforting pre-show dinner of French
standards, before heading upstairs to Te Sultan Jazz Club.

Immigrants HHHH
Local, Peranakan. 467 Joo Chiat Rd., 8511-7322,

By veteran Damian DSilva, this laid-back gastropub has applied the small
plates concept to Eurasian and Peranakan cuisine, served up in a large chilled-
out space that houses a bar and a more homely dining room in the backthe
combination of old-fashioned wooden chairs, mosaic tiled fooring and red
brick walls easily brings to mind memories of yesteryear. In addition, DSilvas
own penchant for craft beers and whiskeys has resulted in a respectable list of
tipples that are great paired with signatures such as sambal buah keluak fried rice.

Te reincarnation of Raw Kitchen Bar has planted itself frmly
in Lavender, and while its farther out than wed like, therein lies
part of its charm. Stepping into this buzzing industrial space with
bare concrete foors and glass tables is a little like stepping into a
friends minimalist apartment for a dinner party. Raw items like
ceviche and Hawaiian-inspired poke still make an appearance,
while pizzas deserve a special mention. Tis not-so-hidden gem
is a rarity, possessing just the right laidback vibe and yummy food,
making it ideal for a frst date or a catch-up session with friends.
