Marilyn Monroe. Elvis Presley. James Dean
Photographs by Bert Stern, Richard Miller, Douglas Kirkland, Alfred Wertheimer
Gallery One in association with Raj Prem Fine Art Photography is pleased to bring together 3 ICONS of the late 20th
century in a single photographic exhibit. Through fame and infamy, Marilyn Monroe. Elvis Presley and James Dean have
transcended celebrity. Photographed by celebrated photographers Bert Stern, Richard Miller, Douglas Kirkland, the collection
includes arguably Monroes most famous images from her last sitting and Dean at his most extra-ordinary on the set of his
fnal movie, Giant.
Bert Stern is perhaps best known for his work with Marylin Monroe. The Last Sitting was commissioned by Vogue and
preceded her death by just six weeks. Stern has a fascination for controversial women or bad girls, like Britney, Paris, and
Lindsay Lohan. Monroe was, in a sense, the original tabloid queen.
The Alfred Wertheimer photographs of Elvis Presley are unmediated, raw, and personal, revealing unguarded moments at
rehearsals, backstage, and on the road. These prints are limited editions signed front and verso .They are exhibition-quality,
gelatin silver photographic prints on double-weight fbre paper, signed by the photographer.
Richard Miller was given privileged access to James Dean. Shooting on and off the set, he has captured the real Dean in
unguarded and most human form. James Deans death at a young age helped guarantee a legendary status. He was the frst
actor to receive a posthumous Academy Award nomination for Best Actor and remains the only person to have two such
nominations posthumously.
In November of 1961 a young photographer, Douglas Kirkland, from Fort Erie Canada found himself with the thrilling and
terrifying job of photographing Marilyn Monroe. The assignment was to take the most sizzling picture he could get for the
25th anniversary issue of Look. Kirkland devised a simple set; a bed and white sheets, silk as Marilyn had requested. He
procured the Dom Perignon and Frank Sinatra LPs for which shed asked. Eventually the two of them were alone with the
camera. The results are sensuous provocative and some of the most evocative of Monroes inimitably complex character.
3 ICONS
Bertram Stern. Born 3 October 1929
American fashion and celebrity portrait photographer.
In 1962, photographer Bert Stern shot a series of photographs of
Marilyn Monroe that have collectively come to be known as The Last
Sitting. Taken during several alcohol infuenced sessions at the Hotel Bel-
Air, the photographs are perhaps the most famous images ever captured
of Americas most famous actress: Monroe, sleepy-eyed and sometimes
scantily clad, sips from a Champagne glass, enacts a fan dance of sorts with
various diaphanous scarves, romps with erotic playfulness on a bed of
white linens. Six weeks after she had posed, Monroe was found dead of an
apparent barbiturate overdose.
The photographs endure partly as artifactsas the last visible evidence
of the living woman (a legacy reinforced by Sterns decision to publish the
contact sheets Monroe herself had crossed out in red marker). But the
pictures are also remarkable for the raw truths they seem to reveal. In
them, we see an actress whose comedic talents were overshadowed by
her sex appeal, a woman who is cannily aware of her pinup status, yet is
also beginning to show her 36 years. In many shots, she is obviously under
the infuence of alcohol.
Stern excavated and preserved the poignant humanity of the real
womanbeautiful, but also fragile, needy, fawed - from the monumental
sex symbol. In our armored, airbrushed age, his achievement feels
almost revolutionary.
Stern published Marilyn Monroe: The Complete Last Sitting in 1992. He
also directed Jazz on a Summers Day, a 1959 documentary flm set at
the 1958 Newport Jazz Festival. In 1999 the flm was deemed culturally
signifcant by the United States Library of Congress and selected for
preservation in the National Film Registry.
Stern worked as a photographer on Lolita and shot the publicity
photographs of Sue Lyon. He has photographed Audrey Hepburn,
Elizabeth Taylor, Madonna, Kylie Minogue, Drew Barrymore and Lindsay
Lohan (recreating The Last Sitting), among others, in addition to his work
for advertising and travel publications.
Alfred Wertheimer. Born 1929 in USA
Photographer to Elvis Presley Born
In 1956, just before Elvis Presleys fame skyrocketed, RCA Victor Records
granted photographer Alfred Wertheimer complete access to their
21-year-old recording artist. Wertheimer continued the assignment on
his own for about a year, resulting in this collection that documents Elvis
before his image came under the control of agents. The Alfred Wertheimer
photographs of Elvis Presley are unmediated, raw, and personal, revealing
unguarded moments at rehearsals, backstage, and on the road. The prints
are limited editions signed front and verso .They are exhibition-quality,
gelatin silver photographic prints on double-weight fbre paper, signed by
the photographer.
Douglas Kirkland. Born 1934 in Toronto, Ontario
Photographer to the stars
In November of 1961 a young photographer from Fort Erie Canada found
himself with the thrilling and terrifying job of photographing Marilyn Monroe.
The assignment was to take the most sizzling picture he could get for the
25th anniversary issue of Look. Kirkland devised a simple set; a bed and
white sheets, silk as Marilyn had requested. He procured the Dom Perignon
and Frank Sinatra LPs for which shed asked. Eventually the two of them
were alone with the camera. Kirkland used a constant light so there would
be no interruption of a fash. In the book An Evening With Marilyn Kirkland
describes the sensuality and intimacy of the shoot. Between photographs he
lay on the foor and the two talked and laughed. Some of the most telling
images are those of Kirkland and Marilyn together during the shoot. These
photographs are Marilyn Monroe as we remember her; sexual, smiling,
somehow natural beneath her cap of peroxide hair. Her spirit is echoed by
the terrifc sense of immediacy in the photographic technique.

A Whos Who of notable persons have posed for Kirkland from the
great photography innovator Man Ray and photographer/painter Jacques
Henri Lartigue to Dr. Stephen Hawking. Entertainment celebrities he has
photographed include Mick Jagger, Sting, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Morgan
Freeman, Orson Welles, Andy Warhol, Oliver Stone, Mikhail Baryshnikov,
Leonardo DiCaprio, Coco Chanel, Marlene Dietrich, Brigitte Bardot, Judy
Garland, Elizabeth Taylor, Sophia Loren and Catherine Deneuve. Kirklands
portrait of Charlie Chaplin is at the National Portrait Gallery in London.
Kirkland is contracted for work around the world and has worked in the
motion picture industry as a special photographer on more than one
hundred flms including 2001: A Space Odyssey, The Sound of Music,
Sophies Choice, Out of Africa, The Pirate Movie, Butch Cassidy and the
Sundance Kid, Romancing the Stone, Titanic, and Moulin Rouge!. Some of
his famous flm shots include John Travolta in the dance sequence from
Saturday Night Fever and a portrait of Judy Garland crying. In 1995 Kirkland
received a Lifetime Achievement Award from the American motion pictures
Society of Operating Cameramen.
Douglas Kirkland has lectured at the Smithsonian Institution, the American
Film Institute in Hawaii and Los Angeles, the Art Center College of Design in
Pasadena as well as the Kodak Centers in Hong Kong, Singapore and Taiwan.
Richard C Miller. Born 1912 in Hanford, California
Captured Dean like no other
In 1955, photographer Richard C. Miller was on one of his frst assignments
with Globe Photos. The setting was Marfa, Texas, and the assignment was
to cover George Stevens latest epic flm, Giant. Starring in the picture
was James Dean, and as Richard recounts, their rapport with one another
was good from the very start:
Jimmy Dean and I were both interested in Porsches, so we hit it off right
away. I worked on the set of Giant. I was very upset when he died
because we got along great. I think we would have been friends for life.
One need not, however, take Richards word for this relationship, as
the proof is in the pictures. Richards unassuming and friendly nature
immediately put Jimmy at ease in front of his camera. Consequently,
Richards impeccable eye was able to capture and candidly photograph
James Dean in situations, settings and moods that enable us, the viewers, to
peek in on the icon, as the man (laughing, joking, sleeping, playing, reading,
eating, thinking). Tragically, James Dean was killed in a car accident shortly
after Richard fnished shooting him on the set of Giant. Jimmy had invited
Richard on that fateful road trip up to Salinas, however, due to a conficting
assignment, Richard was unable to join him.
Until recently, the negatives from this assignment were in Richards home,
still in the original glassine sleeves he put them in ffty three years ago.
In 1929 Richard was introduced to Leica and Grafex cameras and to
cinematography while attending, successively, Stanford University, Pomona
College, and University of Southern California. By 1939 he has left his
acting work for a career as a photographer. In 1946 he photographs
Norma Jean Dougherty (later Marilyn Monroe). Whilst on a retainer at
Globe Photos covering the flm community and the West he was assigned
to his frst location coverage - Giant. Eventually he was to cover more
than seventy flms. By 1962 Richard was in semi-retirement, occasionally
shooting motion picture and other assignments.
