Reaction Paper Goyas Ghosts
Goyas Ghosts is a movie that I speculated happened in the era of French Revolution, before, during and
after it. Francisco Goya, a painter of the royal family, made works that showed evil and as a result
intensified the inquisition as proposed by Lorenzo Casamares to the church. Ines Bilbatua, a young and
beautiful girl who models for Goya, was a victim of this heightened awareness of the church against
heretics. She was then requested by the Holy office to be put to the question and confess her sin. Her
Father, naturally as a father, will worry and will make anything just to get her out and save her. Her
Father, Tomas Bilbatua, had a dinner with Lorenzo Casamares and forced him to confess as a monkey
and gave him the money to bribe for her freedom. Despite all efforts of her father to get her out, it
failed. Lorenzo was expelled from the church and his portrait was burned publicly.
The French then started their revolution and invaded Spain as a command of Napoleon Bonaparte. As
they have the motto, liberty, equality and fraternity, they seized Spains traditional and old ideals,
freeing those who were victims of inquisition, abolishing the Church and imposed a new trial system.
Ines then had the opportunity to come home and there, she saw her family, lying down on the ground,
dead. Francisco Goya then became totally deaf but in return, painted and documented all that was
happening outside his own the war.
Ines, after learning that she has no family members left, went to Goya and requested for his help to find
Lorenzo and her child. She then went to the court where Lorenzo was and was put to jail by Lorenzo,
without Goya knowing. The two, Lorenzo and Francisco Goya, start to find her child which in turn was
known to be called as Alicia. Alicia was found but what happened to be their child, turned into a whore
who entertains customers almost every day.
Learning that they both found Alicia, Goya insisted that she must see her mother who was in jail. Goya,
not knowing Ines is in jail, persuaded Lorenzo to tell him where she was and there he rescued her by
bailing her out. The real thing is not bailing her out but buying her illegally. As a solution, Lorenzo
ordered to dispatch all prostitutes, including Alicia, selling them to America as slaves. On the way to the
Iberian ports, the convoy accidentally met the British forces that were attacking Spain. The British won,
the Church was reestablished, Lorenzo was put into trial. He was convicted and sentenced to death. He
was guillotined in public. Ines walks with him for the last time carrying the baby Alicia is carrying before
the police made a scene. The movie ends.
Overall, the movie was good. It clearly depicted how life is during the inquisition and before the French
Revolution in Spain. The movie also showed that Goya reached its peak in art when he became deaf. The
movie also showed how Spain masses switch their sides with just everyone new just to gain what they
want (short term happiness). It also shows how one man, a father of an illegitimate daughter, can do
just to save his face from his new family and for his new position. The movie overall shows how power
can be shifted and the difference of fear and glory from leadership. It also shows how love can be so
powerful and how love can be so selfish.
