EDU600 - PRIMARY SCHOOL

INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY

This course introduces students to the various computer
applications software such as word processing, desktop
publishing, web pages development, spreadsheet,
telecommunications and their uses in all areas of education.
Students will finish the course with a complete understanding of
computers, how to use computer applications, and how to access
information on the World Wide Web as an integrated teaching
and learning tool.
Students will also be exposed to teaching and learning systems
or tools, such as web-based teaching and learning tools and
educational portals. This will assist them in understanding other
alternatives of teaching and learning techniques that can be used
in classrooms. Students are also given hands-on experience
with each technique or application being explained and
demonstrated via workshops in a computer laboratory.

At the end of the course, students should be able to:
Explain the basic elements and components of a
computer system.
Describe the basic characteristics of application
programs.
Apply application programs in the curriculum and
for administrative purposes.
Describe the basic elements of telecommunication
and system tools and their uses and benefits in
education.
Discuss issues and future trends of computers in
education.

What is computer literacy (digital literacy)?
Current knowledge and understanding
of computers and their uses
How is a computer defined?
Produces and stores results
Electronic device operating under the control of
instructions stored in its own memory
Processes data into information
Conveys meaning and is
useful to people
Accepts data
Collection of
unprocessed items
An electronic device, operating under the
control of instructions stored in its on
memory units, that can accept data (input),
process data arithmetically and logically,
produce output from the processing, and
store the result for future use (Shelley and
Cashman, 2010)

What is the information processing cycle?
Input
Process
Output
Storage
Communication
Computer can perform four general
operations.
These operations comprise the
information processing cycle they are:
Input, process, output and Storage.

Collectively, these operations describe the
procedures a computer perform to process
data into information and store it for future
use

Input
All computer processing requires data.
Data refers to the raw facts, including
numbers, words, images and sounds, given
to a computer during the input operation

Process
In the processing phase, the computer
manipulates the data to create information.
Information refers to data in a form that it
has meaning and useful
Output
During the output operation, the
information that has been created is put
into some form, such as a printed report,
that people can use.

Storage
The information can also be placed in
computer storage for future use.

The four operations can be reliably and
quickly along these circuits in a speed of light.

Computer is a powerful tool as processing
can be accomplished in billionth of a second.

For a computer to perform the operations
in the information processing cycle, it must
be given a detailed set of instructions that
tell exactly what to do.

These instructions are called programs or
software. Before processing for a specific
job, the computer program must be stored
in the computer. Once is stored, the
program can begin to operate.
What is an input
device?
Hardware used
to enter data
and instructions
What is an output device?

Hardware that
conveys
information
to one or more
people
Next
What is the system unit?
Case that contains
the electronic
components of the
computer that are
used to process data
