Apreciado husped: Este nmero de la revista de Eurostars Hotels viene cargado

de novedades. Quiz la ms significativa es la reciente incorporacin a nuestra
cadena del Hotel de la Reconquista, en Oviedo, que para nosotros supone un reto
lleno de contenido. Es el hotel en el que se renen cada ao los galardonados
de los Premios Prncipe de Asturias. Eminentes literatos, artistas, humanistas,
cientficos y deportistas se dan cita cada otoo en el histrico Eurostars Hotel de
la Reconquista, en torno a uno de los eventos de mayor reconocimiento y prestigio
a nivel internacional. Para Eurostars Hotels representa un orgullo gestionar un
establecimiento que mantiene un vnculo tan estrecho con la cultura, el talento
y el humanismo. Por eso hemos querido que este fuera el primer reportaje que
encuentren en estas pginas.
Como en cada edicin, la revista ESTAR selecciona para usted un gran nmero
de propuestas de ocio y cultura en las 45 ciudades de todo el mundo en las que
Eurostars Hotels est presente. As, nos adentramos en el nacimiento y la vigencia
del Pop Art, una corriente artstica que nunca deja de sorprender. En estos meses se
pueden ver varias exposiciones en destinos como Pars o Ciudad de Mxico.
Como destino en esta ocasin viajamos a Venecia, una ciudad nica y asombrosa,
a la que, reconozcmoslo, siempre deseamos volver, y en la que Eurostars Hotels
dispone de un establecimiento muy al estilo veneciano, con su propia porta dacqua.

Dear guest: This edition of our Eurostars Hotels magazine comes crammed
with novelties. Perhaps the most significant is the recent addition of Hotel de
la Reconquista in Oviedo to our chain, which for us means a challenge with an
illustrious background. It is the hotel where, each year, the Prince of Asturias
prize-winners are gathered. Eminent writers, artists, humanitarians, scientists and
sportsmen converge at the historical Hotel de la Reconquista, centred on one of
the most widely recognised events of prestige at international level. For Eurostars
Hotels, running an establishment that maintains such a close relationship with
culture, talent and humanism gives us great pride. For that reason we have
arranged for it to be the first article to appear in our magazine.
As in every edition, ESTAR selects for you a large number of leisure and culture
proposals in the 45 cities throughout the world where Eurostars Hotels are present.
Therefore, we delve into the birth and validity of Pop Art, an artistic movement that
never ceases to surprise us. In the months to follow, several exhibitions can be seen

Esta exposicin muestra, por
primera vez, ms de 300 fotografas de la coleccin privada
de Thomas Walter, datadas en la
primera mitad del siglo XX, con
especial presencia de imgenes
de las dos Gueras Mundiales
(1909-1949). Las instantneas recogen las enormes innovaciones
que se fueron realizando en este
campo, cuando los fotgrafos
se acercaron a la figuracin, la
abstraccin y la imaginacin. La

La unin de culturas a travs del
zodiaco de Ai Weiwei
El afamado artista chino Ai
Weiwei lleva el zodiaco chino al
Museo Nacional de Antropologa
de Mxico. La obra, formada
por doce esculturas en bronce,
se inspira en la fuente-reloj del
palacio de verano de Yuan Ming
Yuan, en Beijing, un inmenso
complejo de estilo versallesco
construido en el siglo XVIII por
la propia corte china, y arrasado
en 1860 en el contexto de la
Segunda Guerra del Opio. El
conjunto escultrico permite
apreciar la grandeza de la China
Imperial, en particular su idea de
espacio y poder. Pero ms all de
eso, la exposicin invita al espectador a entablar un dilogo entre
culturas. La muestra se cre en
2010 para la Fuente Pulitzer en
Manhattan, y desde entonces ha
pasado por galeras y museos
de Londres, Taipei, Los ngeles,
Miami, Toronto y Ucrania.
The union of cultures through
the zodiac by Ai Weiwei
The noted Chinese artist, Ai
Weiwei, has taken the Chinese
Zodiac to the National Anthropological Museum of Mexico.
The work, formed by twelve
bronze sculptures, is inspired
by the fountain-clock in the Old
Summer Palace of Yuan Ming
Yuan, in Beijing, an immense
complex in Versailles style
built in the 18th century by the
Chinese court and razed to the
ground in 1860 in the throes
of the Second Opium War. The
set of sculptures allows one
to appreciate the grandeur of
Imperial China, particularly
the idea of space and power.
But beyond that, the exhibition
invites the spectator to enter
into a dialogue between the
cultures. The exhibition was
created in 2010 for the Pulitzer

scenes, the sentimental distancing of his landscapes and
the ever-growing importance
in later work of the private
environments of the artist. The
exhibition will also display for
the first time the illustrations

El Museo Thyssen-Bornemisza
propone una relectura de la obra
del pintor fauvista francs Raoul
Dufy clebre por sus pinturas
de fiestas elegantes o perspectivas de la Riviera Francesa. Esta
relectura est centrada no solo
en su vertiente hedonista, sino
tambin en su faceta ms introspectiva, reflexiva y personal.
Se ahonda en cuestiones poco
estudiadas de su produccin,
como el progresivo alejamiento
del punto de vista en sus obras,
la sntesis de lo cotidiano con
lo pastoral, el distanciamiento
sentimental de sus paisajes y la
importancia, cada vez mayor
en sus obras finales, de mbitos
privados del artista. Asimismo,
la exposicin mostrar por vez
primera los grabados que Dufy
realiz para el Bestiario de
Apollinaire, junto a varios de sus
dibujos preparatorios.

internacional tiene una de sus
citas ms importantes en Oviedo.
La ceremonia de entrega de los
Premios Prncipe de Asturias
convierte a la capital del Principado
en la Estocolmo del sur de Europa.

The international cultural agenda

has one of its most important
appointments in Oviedo. The Prince
of Asturias prize-giving ceremony
turns the capital of the Principality
into the Stockholm of southern
Europe.

All en el norte, el Rey de Suecia entrega en diciembre los que son,

quiz, los galardones ms prestigiosos del mundo. En el sur, el
Prncipe de Asturias actualmente el Rey Felipe VI hace entrega,
cada mes de octubre, de unos premios que han sido reconocidos por
la UNESCO por su excepcional aportacin al patrimonio cultural de la
humanidad.
Los escritores Mario Vargas Llosa, Camilo Jos Cela y Doris Lessing
fueron galardonados con el Premio Prncipe de Asturias antes de
recibir el Nobel. Polticos como Nelson Mandela, Frederik de Klerk y
Mijail Gorbachov; cientficos como Luc Montagnier o John Edward
Sulston, o economistas como Muhammad Yunus o Paul Krugman
acudieron tambin a Oviedo antes de viajar a Oslo o Estocolmo, y lo
mismo hicieron organizaciones como Mdicos Sin Fronteras.
En otros casos la diferencia fue de apenas meses. La Fundacin
Prncipe de Asturias se adelant a la Academia Sueca al premiar al
escritor Gnter Grass, a los dirigentes Yasir Arafat, Isaac Rabin o
Al Gore o a los cientficos Franois Englert o Peter Higgs. Los seis
recibieron los dos galardones el mismo ao, pero con cinco meses
de diferencia, los que separan el mes de mayo cuando se anuncia la
concesin de los Prncipe de Asturias de octubre, cuando se celebra
la Semana Nobel.
As hasta casi una veintena, a los que podran unirse en el futuro
los nombres de otros escritores, cientficos, artistas o lderes polticos
que trabajan por la paz y la concordia. Los premios que se otorgan en
Oviedo han acabado convirtindose en la antesala de los Nobel y pese
a los 3.000 kilmetros que las separan la capital asturiana se ha
ganado el reconocimiento como la Estocolmo espaola.
De modo que, cada otoo, acompaados por esa fina lluvia que salpica casi irremediablemente esta plcida ciudad del norte de Espaa,
se dan cita eminentes literatos, artistas, humanistas, cientficos y deportistas. El Teatro Campoamor, en la Plaza de la Escandalera, donde
se encuentran la ciudad histrica y el Oviedo moderno, se convierte
en el centro que iluminan todos los focos. Ah se celebra, desde su primera edicin en 1981, la ceremonia de entrega de premios. Pero hay
otro centro de inters, la base de operaciones de todo el entramado de
estos prestigiosos premios: el Eurostars Hotel de la Reconquista. Un
edificio catalogado como monumento nacional desde el que los galardonados, los componentes de los diferentes jurados y los invitados
ilustres visitan una ciudad delicada e ilustrada, cuidada y culta, en la
que la vida es, sencillamente, deliciosa.

There in the north, in December, the King of Sweden will be handing

over awards which are, perhaps, the most prestigious in the world. In
the south, each October, the Price of Asturias now King Felipe VI
will be presenting a series of awards which have received recognition
by UNESCO for their exceptional contribution to the cultural heritage
of Humanity.
Writers Mario Vargas Llosa, Camilo Jos Cela and Doris Lessing
were awarded the Prince of Asturias Prize before receiving the Nobel
laureate. Politicians like Nelson Mandela, Frederik de Klerk and
Mikhail Gorbachev, scientists like Luc Montagnier or John Edward
Sulston, or economists like Muhammad Yunus or Paul Krugman also
went to Oviedo before travelling to Oslo or Stockholm, as likewise did
organizations such as MSF-Doctors without Borders. In other cases
the time lapse was a scarce few months. The Price of Asturias Foundation was ahead of the Swedish Academy when it presented awards to
writer Gnter Grass, or to statesmen Yasser Arafat, Isaac Rabin and Al
Gore, or scientists Franois Englert and Peter Higgs. These six men
received the awards the same year but with a difference of five months,
those that elapse from the month of May when the Price of Asturias
award winners are announced, to October when the Nobel prize-giving
ceremony is held.
And so on, to some twenty personalities, to which in the future
could be added the names of other writers, scientists, artists or political leaders who work to achieve peaceful co-existence. The awards
presented in Oviedo have become the antechamber of the Nobel Prizes
and despite the 3,000 kilometres separating them the capital of
Asturias has gained recognition as the Spanish Stockholm.
So it is that each autumn, accompanied by that fine drizzle that
almost inevitably dampens this tranquil city in the north of Spain, writers, artists, humanitarians, scientists and sports people are gathered.
The Campoamor Theatre, on Plaza de la Escandalera, where the old,
historical city and modern Oviedo meet, then becomes the illuminated, focal point. Here, since its first edition in 1981, is where the
prize-giving ceremony is held. But there is another centre of interest,
the base for operations for the entire framework supporting these
prestigious awards: the Eurostars Hotel de la Reconquista. A building
classified as a national monument, from which the award-winners,
the members of the various juries and the illustrious visitors can tour
this famous, gentle, cultured, well-kept city in which life is, simply,
delicious.

Casi una veintena de Premios Prncipe de Asturias
han sido, despus, galardonados con el Premio Nobel. Podramos decir que los Prncipe de Asturias
se han convertido, de algn modo, en la antesala de
los Nobel?
Efectivamente, en varias ocasiones los Premios
Prncipe de Asturias se han adelantado a los Nobel
a la hora de reconocer la obra de varios de nuestros
galardonados y algunos medios de comunicacin
internacionales han usado esa frmula para
definirnos. En todo caso, nuestro objetivo es premiar
la excelencia all donde se encuentre, sin pensar en
adelantarnos a nadie. Podramos decir que ese hecho,
anecdtico para nosotros, simplemente contribuye a
reforzar de alguna manera ese reconocimiento.
La Unesco ha reconocido la labor de los Premios
Prncipe de Asturias por su excepcional aportacin
al patrimonio de la Humanidad. Es esta aportacin
lo que buscan los jurados de los diferentes premios
a la hora de tomar sus decisiones?
La labor de los miembros de los jurados es
elegir cada ao a personalidades e instituciones
que pasarn a formar parte de lo que se ha dado
en llamar el cuadro de honor de la humanidad. Se
trata, como deca antes, de buscar y premiar la
excelencia, de fijar el foco de atencin sobre la figura
y la labor de seres humanos excepcionales que, con
su esfuerzo, y muchas veces consagrando su vida a
un fin determinado, estn contribuyendo a crear un
mundo mejor.

Qu papel juega el Hotel de la Reconquista en los

Premios Prncipe de Asturias?
El vnculo entre la Fundacin Prncipe de Asturias
y el Hotel de la Reconquista ha sido siempre muy
estrecho. En l se celebr el acto de constitucin
de la Fundacin hace ms de treinta aos y en l se
han hospedado las personalidades galardonadas a
lo largo de la historia de nuestros Premios. Desde
Carlos Fuentes a Woody Allen, Mary Robinson,
Annie Leibovitz, Nelson Mandela, Rafael Nadal o
Michael Haneke. Todos han pasado por el hotel,
que presta un gran apoyo a la Fundacin a la hora
de atender, no solo a los premiados, sino tambin
a todos los invitados a la recepcin que se celebra
una vez finalizada la ceremonia de entrega de los
galardones.
Almost twenty Prince of Asturias award-winners
have later been awarded Nobel Prizes. Could we say
that the Prince of Asturias prizes have become, in a
way, the antechamber of the Nobel Prizes?
Indeed, on several occasions the Prince of Asturias
Awards have anticipated the Nobel Prizes by granting
official recognition to the work of several of our
award-winners and some international means of
communication have used this formula to define us.
In any case, our aim is to award excellence wherever
it is to be found, without giving any thought to
anticipation. We could say that this fact, which for us
is purely circumstantial, simply contributes in its way
towards reinforcement of that recognition.

UNESCO has acknowledged the task performed by

the Prince of Asturias Awards for their exceptional
contribution towards our Human Heritage. Is this
contribution the element sought by the various
panels of judges when taking their decisions?
The task of the panels of judges is to each year
choose personalities and institutions to go down in
history and form part of what has come to be known
as the Roll of Honour of Humanity. It is a question, as
I said earlier, of seeking out and awarding excellence,
of placing the limelight on the figure and work of
exceptional human beings who, with their efforts
and, often enough, a lifetime devoted to a particular
end, are contributing towards the creation of a better
world.
What role does Hotel de la Reconquista play in the
Prince of Asturias Prizes?
The link between the Prince of Asturias
Foundation and Hotel de la Reconquista has
always been very strong. The act to celebrate the
Constitution of the Foundation was held there more
than thirty years ago and it is the where our prizewinners have been accommodated throughout the
history of the event. From Carlos Fuentes to Woody
Allen, Mary Robinson, Annie Liebovitz, Nelson
Mandela, Rafael Nadal or Michael Haneke. All have
stayed at the hotel, which provides the Foundation
with great support by attending to, not only the
prize-winners but also the guests invited for the
reception held after the prize-giving ceremony.

cien esculturas que decoran sus calles. Desde la estatua de Ana Ozores,
materializacin de la protagonista de
La Regenta de Clarn, hasta la figura
en bronce de Woody Allen, en pleno
centro comercial y peatonal.

A walk dotted with the more than
one hundred sculptures that adorn
its streets. From the statue of Ana
Ozores, the materialisation of the
leading character of Clarns novel,
La Regenta, through to the figure in
bronze of Woody Allen, in the hub of
the pedestrian, shopping district

restored Plaza de Trascorrales. There,

while enjoying an aperitif, one will
see three exceptional lookers-on:
the Milkmaid, the Fish Vendor and
the Fishwife. This plaza houses the
old fish market which nowadays can
be transformed, depending on the
occasion, to become an exhibition
hall or improvised dining room for
official visits.

01. Ana Ozores and the Cathedral

The Plaza de Daoiz y Velarde, is our

next stop, one of the busiest squares
in the centre of Oviedo, which contains
the old Fontn market and there we
can find the sculpture of the Fontn
Market Sellers. On this same square is
Casa de las Comedias in neo-classical
style and the baroque palace of the
Marqus de San Feliz. Whats more, it
is an excellent spot for sampling tapas
and enjoying the flower market.

01. Ana Ozores y la Catedral

La visita a la ciudad histrica, la que

se escondi un da, all por el siglo
XIII, tras una muralla ya desaparecida, nos devuelve ahora todo el sabor
de lo que fue la urbe decimonnica. Y no solo por el valor de su
patrimonio, sino tambin porque las
rehabilitaciones y reconstrucciones
de los ltimos aos se han procupado de restituir todo ese valor. As,
caminar por sus calles empedradas,
cerradas al trfico es, casi, como
volver a la Vetusta de Ana Ozores.Y
ah est, esculpida ella, ante una
catedral construida en estilo gtico
tardo, y que destaca por contar con
una nica torre.

A pocos metros, en la plaza de Porlier, El viajero de rculo en realidad

la escultura se llama El regreso de
Williams B. Arrensberg se detiene
entre los palacios de Camposagrado
(S XVIII) y de los Condes de Toreno
(S XVII).

de pescado y La pescadera

Uno de los rincones con ms sabor y

mejor gastronoma se encuentra en
la reformada Plaza de Trascorrales.
All, mientras se disfruta de un aperitivo, uno cuenta con tres testigos de

excepcin: La lechera, La pescadera

y El vendedor de pescado. En esta
plaza se ubica el antiguo mercado
de pescado, que hoy se transforma,
segn la ocasin, en sala de exposiciones o comedor improvisado para
las visitas oficiales.

04. Las vendedoras del Fontn

La Plaza del Fontn es una de las

ms concurridas del centro de Oviedo. Junto a ella, en la Plaza de Daoiz
y Velarde, se encuentra nuestra
nueva parada: Las vendedoras del
Fontn. En esta misma plaza se ubica la Casa de las Comedias, de estilo
neoclsico, y el palacio barroco del
Marqus de San Feliz. Es, adems,
un excelente lugar para tapear y para
disfrutar del mercado de las flores.

05. Con Botero hacia la ciudad

moderna

La Maternidad de Botero se convierte, sobre la Plaza de La Escandalera,

en una mujer rotunda que sostiene
a su hijo en su regazo. Muy cerca,
en la Plaza del Carbayn, frente al
Teatro Campoamor, donde cada ao
se celebra la ceremonia de entrega
de los Premios Prncipe de Asturias,
se encuentra el conjunto de figuras
que forman el Monumento a la
Concordia.

06. De compras con Woody

Llegamos a la zona ms comercial

de la ciudad: la calle Ura. Terminamos el recorrido topando, como un
caminante ms, con un tal Woody
Allen, galardonado con el Premio
Prncipe de Asturias de Las Artes en
2002. Allen eligi las calles de Oviedo para rodar varias escenas de su
pelcula Vicky Cristina Barcelona.

The visit made to the historical, old

city, once upon a time, around the
13th century, hidden behind the now
destroyed city walls, gives us a taste
of what used to be a nineteenthcentury city. Not only because of the
value of its heritage but also because
the reconstruction and rehabilitation
work undertaken in recent years has
attempted to restore all that value.
Therefore, walking through the cobbled streets closed to traffic is almost
like going back to the Vetusta of Ana
Ozores. And, there she is, in sculpture
form, in front of the cathedral built
in late Gothic style and which also is
outstanding for its sole tower.

the traveller by Eduardo rculo in
fact the name of the sculpture is The
Return of Williams B. Arrensberg
halts between the palaces of Camposagrado (18th century) and Condes

Boteros Maternity, on Plaza de La Escandalera, is a plump woman holding

a child on her lap. Very close-by,
on Plaza del Carbayn, in front of
the Campoamor Theatre where the
Prince of Asturias prize-giving is held
every year, is a set of figures that
form the Monument to Concord.

06. Shopping with Woody Allen

We arrive at the most commercial part

of the city: Ura Street. We end the
tour coming face to face, as though
he were just another walker, with
Woody Allen, awarded the Prince of
Asturias Arts Prize in 2002. Woody
Allen chose Oviedo streets for several
scenes in his movie Vicky Cristina
Barcelona.

Literatura. Era opinin de Don Quijote que todo est sujeto a mudanza, y entre ello, lo
que ms, los asuntos de batallas. Pues as comienza la obra del escritor norteamericano
James Salter Todo lo que hay, momentos antes de la de Okinawa. El autor, que fue soldado
en la guerra de Corea, reconoce habitualmente que no es posible negar esa experiencia, la
de la guerra, como un suceso fundamental en su biografa y en la de todos aquellos que la
han vivido. Estas simetras cervantinas no lo son solo en este hecho, sino tambin en el de
mantener temas comunes a lo largo de sus narraciones: el sentido que el amor puede dar
a una vida que es, por s, inexplicable, pero muy amena en los pequeos detalles diarios.
Philip Bowman, el protagonista, se dedica al mundo editorial y a viajar por Europa (Pars,
Londres, Espaa), disfruta de la vida, pero no encuentra la mujer definitiva, pues un primer matrimonio acaba en uno de sus mayores fracasos. Entonces, dnde est el encanto?
Salter es un maestro del dilogo corto y de la descripcin concisa. Aparentemente no pasa
nada y pasa de todo. Es sencillo en su lectura y complejo es sus connotaciones.
Literature. It was the opinion of Don Quixote that everything is subject to change and,
within it, battle issues. This is how All that is, by this U.S. writer, begins, moments before
the battle of Okinawa. The author, who fought in the Korean War, habitually recognizes
that it is impossible to deny that experience, that of warfare, as a fundamental happening
in his biography and that of everyone who experienced it. These Cervantine symmetries
are not only present in this fact but also in the maintaining of common themes throughout his narrations: the sense that love can give to a life is, in itself, inexplicable, but very
pleasant in its little, everyday details. Philip Bowman, the main character, a university
graduate, is engaged in publishing and travelling around Europe (Paris, London, Spain),
enjoys his life but has not found the woman of his dreams, inasmuch as his first marriage
ends in one of his greatest failures. So, where is the charm? Salter is a virtuoso in short
dialogue and concise description. Apparently nothing happens and yet it all happens. It is
easy to read and complex in its connotations.

George Clooney se propone salvar el arte

del expolio nazi
A finales de la Segunda Guerra Mundial, a un selecto grupo de historiadores, directores de museos y expertos en arte tanto britnicos como norteamericanos se les
encomienda la importante y peligrosa misin de recuperar las obras de arte robadas
por los nazis durante la guerra para devolvrselas a sus legtimos propietarios. Es una
misin casi imposible: las obras estaban muy bien custodiadas y el ejrcito alemn
tiene orden de destruirlas en cuanto el Reich caiga.
En su quinta incursin como director de cine, Clooney apuesta por una historia de
evasin, con elevadas dosis de humor y un enfoque narrativo basado en la sucesin de
peripecias y situaciones extraordinarias.
No es la primera vez que el cine aborda una historia de estas caractersticas: John
Frankenheimer ya lo hizo de forma magistral en El tren (1964, con Burt Lancaster y
Paul Scofield), en clave de thriller. Clooney apuesta sin embargo por un ejercicio de
divertimento, puro cine de evasin que tiene como hndicap conseguir que el espectador sienta simpata por unos personajes (un grupo de estudiosos) que, con el objetivo
de recuperar valiosas obras artsiticas, van recorriendo una Europa cuya poblacin
est devastada por la guerra.

George Clooney wants to save art masterpieces

from the Nazi looting
At the end of World War II a select group of historians, museum curators and art experts, both British and American, are entrusted the important, dangerous mission of
recovering art masterpieces stolen by the Nazis during the War and to return them to
their legitimate owners. It was an impossible mission: the works of art were very well
guarded and the German Army had orders to destroy them the moment the Reich fell.
In his fifth incursion as a movie director, Clooney places his bet on an escapist story,
with large doses of humour and the focus of the plot based on the series of vicissitudes
and extraordinary situations.
It is not the first time that the cinema tackles this type of a story: John Frankenheimer already did so magnificently in The Train (1964, with Burt Lancaster and Paul
Scofield), as a thriller. Clooney, however, bets on an entertainment exercise, pure
evasion cinema which has the added handicap of making the spectator feel sympathy
for the characters (a group of scholars) who, pursuing their aim of recovering various
masterpieces, travel through a Europe whose population is devastated by the war.

The Roman Aqueduct as a symbol of an unperishable city

Impassive to the passage of time, an impressive construction stands proud in Segovia, a reflection of the huge artistic and technical
capacity of the ancient Romans: the Aqueduct of Segovia is the symbol of a city accustomed to change, to the vicissitudes of
history. Built probably between the second half of the first century and beginning of the second, this structure has a length of
728 metres and a height of 28.29 metres at its highest point. Its 166 arches and 20,400 blocks of stone, joined together without
mortar or cement, were built for the purpose of carrying water from the mountain range to the city.
The aqueduct is only one of the many reasons for enjoying a city that was declared a Human Heritage by UNESCO in 1985.
Segovia has many other artistic and architectural treasures and, precisely in order to make some of them far better known,
visitors can join the Domingos de Patrimonio Heritage Sundays (www.segovia.es): guided tours as from the end of
November, conducted by experts in each subject: Stained glass Cathedral Windows, The Royal Glass Factory, etc. Other
visits not be missed should commence in the old city. We should make our way to the Plaza Mayor, presided by the imposing

de Segovia an conserva importantes muestras de la cultura hebrea. Entre sus

judo antes del decreto de expulsin de 1492.
No se pude abandonar la ciudad sin degustar su amplia oferta gastronmica
en alguno de sus tradicionales mesones o asadores castellanos. All podremos
probar los platos tpicos de Castilla: un ponche segoviano, la deliciosa sopa
castellana o el dulce de leche frita. Pero, sobre todo, un estupendo cochinillo
asado, directamente del horno a la mesa, y partido con el canto de un plato, que

II. The Jewish Quarter of Segovia still preserves important traces of the ancient
Hebrew culture. Amongst its buildings, visits can be made to the Sinagoga Mayor

this city before the expulsion decree of 1492.
The city cannot be left without sampling its wide range of food at some of the

a Segovian punch, a delicious Castilian soup or a sweet made from fried milk.
But, above all, a splendid roast suckling pig, directly from the oven to the table
and cut open with the edge of a plate, which is finally thrown into the air as a sign
of contentment: an unavoidable ritual.

La orden monstica cisterciense restaur en el siglo XI la regla benedictina
(dictada por Benenidcto de Nursia a principios del siglo VI), que promova
entre los monjes la humildad, el orden, la oracin y la importancia del
trabajo manual. Esta combinacin de valores hizo que los monasterios de
esta orden actuasen como motor del orden social y la pujanza econmica
de los territorios en los que se asentaba, revitalizando el cultivo de la tierra
y trayendo consigo prosperidad. Jug un papel protagonista en la historia
del siglo XII en toda Europa, desde Polonia hasta el sur de la Pennsula
Ibrica. Su expansin fue tan metdica como las construcciones de sus
monasterios y abadas: espacios conceptuales y limpios, cuyo estilo se
inscribe en el final del romnico, con elementos del gtico inicial.
En Catalua, en las comarcas del Alt Camp, de la Conca de Barber y del
Urgell, se encuentran tres exponentes extraordinariamente conservados
de la arquitectura cisterciense: los monasterios de Poblet, Santes Creus y
Vallbona de les Monges, que configuran los tres vrtices de una ruta que
ana espiritualidad, arte y naturaleza.

A spiritual, artistic route in the

heart of Catalonia
In the 1th century the monastic Cistercian Order restored the
Benedictine Rule (dictated by Benedict of Nursia at the beginning of
the 6th century) which conveyed to the monks precepts concerning
humility, order, prayer and the importance of manual labour. This
combination of values made the monasteries belonging to this Order
act as the driving force for the social order and economic vitality of the
territories in which they had settled, revitalizing the growing of crops
with a severity that brought prosperity. Hence, it played a leading role
in the history of the 12th century throughout Europe, from Poland to
the south of the Iberian Peninsula. Its expansion was as methodical as
the construction of its monasteries and abbeys: conceptual, uncluttered
spaces; its style is classified as late Romanesque, with elements of early
Gothic.
In Catalonia, in the regions of Alt Camp, Conca de Barber and Urgell,
three examples of Cistercian architecture are to be found extraordinarily
well preserved: Poblet, Santes Creus and Vallbona de les Monges, which
configure the three apexes of a route that unites spirituality, art and
nature.

NUESTRA PROPUESTA La Ruta del Cster cataln tiene la virtud de recorrer un paisaje natural de gran belleza idneo para el senderismo y el paseo y un buen nmero de
pequeas poblaciones con encanto. Entre ellas, cabe destacar Montblanc, una villa con un casco histrico y una muralla medievales extraordinariamente conservados. Este
pueblo celebra cada ao, a partir del 23 de abril (festividad de San Jordi) una Semana Medieval, con una representacin de la leyenda de San Jordi, mercado medieval, concursos
de juglares... Entre enero y marzo, a lo largo de esta ruta es tpica la degustacin de calots, plato tradicional cataln que precisamente tiene su origen en esta zona. | LOS TRES
MONASTERIOS Santes Creus: El primero de los templos de la Ruta del Cster est hoy da deshabitado y todas las dependencias pueden ser visitadas. Poblet: Fundado tambin
a mediados del siglo XII, es el conjunto cisterciense habitado ms grande de Europa y Patrimonio de la Humanidad desde 1991. Vallbona de les Monges: Conserva uno de los
claustros romnicos ms caractersticos. Fue un centro de poder en el siglo XII, ligado al cultivo y procesado de aceite.
OUR PROPOSAL The Catalonian Cistercian Route has the virtue of passing through a landscape of great beauty ideal for hiking and walks and a sizeable number of
charming towns and villages. Amongst them, Montblanc is worthy of mention, a town with an old, historical quarter and walls dating from mediaeval times, extraordinarily well
preserved. This town celebrates annually, from 23rd April (the festivity of St. George), a Mediaeval Week, with a performance representing the legend of St. George (San Jordi in
Catalonia), a mediaeval market, a minstrels contest and other entertainments. Between the months of January and March, all along the route one can sample the typical calots
(grilled leeks), a Catalonian speciality which originates precisely from this area. | THE THREE MONASTERIES Santes Creus: The first place of worship on the Cistercian Route,
nowadays uninhabited. All the buildings can be visited. Poblet: Also founded in mid-12th century, it is the largest, inhabited Cistercian construction in Europe and a Human
Heritage Site since 1991. Vallbona de les Monges: One of the most beautiful, characteristic Romanesque cloisters still preserved. It became the centre of power in the region
from the end of the 12th century, a time in which the cultivation and processing of olive oil was already famous, as it still is today.

When, in 1956, Richard Hamilton (1922-2011)

created his work, Just what is it that makes
todays home so different, so appealing?, he
made a decisive break away from the dividing
line between the elite in art and popular
culture. The influence of comics, screenprints
and the collage fostered a before-and-after in
the History of Art with the appearance of the
pop art movement.

en el ao 1956 la obra Qu es lo que hace
que las casas de hoy sean tan diferentes, tan
atractivas?, rompi definitivamente con la
frontera entre la lite del arte y la cultura
popular. La influencia del cmic, la obra en
serie y el collage potenciaron un antes y un
despus en la Historia del Arte con la aparicin
del movimiento artstico pop art.

his artistic movement elevated American, British and

later, European routine everydayness to the category of
art. Innumerable images of domestic items, celebrities
and other mass media elements invaded the art gallery
world which filled up with faces and brands that, up to
that moment, had only been visible in the media, on
supermarket shelves and on the billboards.
The need to express artistically what was happening
in a society in which consumerism had become lord
and master and its image had become the main icon of
the people, dragged the principal creativity of the 20th
century fifties and sixties towards a movement of no
return. Today, pop art is as valid as it was at the height
of the Andy Warhol era and his factory of creation. The
deep imprint left by artists like Roy Lichtenstein, Claes
Oldenburg or Robert Rauschenberg has not just become
only a historical fact.
Pop art, from its commencement, permitted exploration towards new languages in art which allowed for
social and cultural reflection and, on this plane, the
surmounting of the historical avant-garde with its maximum
representation in cubism and expressionism, amongst other movements during the first half of the last century was radical. The
multidisciplinary intrusion in the plastic arts marked an unprecedented milestone with collages and screen printing or including odd
objects that appeared on canvases as though they were themselves
paintings or drawings. Pure, bright colour invaded the walls of many
homes; it became possible to talk about art without having knowledge of techniques, concepts or historical-artistic movements.
In the conceptual sphere, pop art was conceived as a mass medium
for the spreading of art and what emerged was an artistic expression
which has, at the same time, been highly praised and criticized by
that same social mass. Despite that intrinsic mass vocation, the
attitude of some of the artists continued to be entrenched within the
inaccessible limits of contemporary art.

infinidad de imgenes de objetos domsticos, personajes
clebres y otros elementos de los mass media invadi el
universo de las galeras de arte, llenndolas de rostros y
marcas que, hasta ese momento, solo estaban presentes
en los medios de comunicacin, en las estanteras de los
supermercados y en las vallas publicitarias.
En los aos 50 y 60, en pleno auge de la sociedad de
consumo, la publicidad comenz a generar un sinfn de
imgenes que acabaran por convertir el propio consumo
en el principal icono del pueblo. La creatividad artstica no
fue inmune a este fenmeno; antes bien, se dej arrastrar
con entusiasmo por l, diluyendo las fronteras entre
el universo visual de los medios de comunicacin y la
simbologa artstica. Hoy el pop art sigue vigente como en
los mejores tiempos de Andy Warhol y su factora de creacin. La profunda huella que dejaron artistas como Roy
Linchtenstein, Claes Oldenbourg o Robert Rauschenberg
no se ha quedado solo en la historia.
El pop art, desde sus inicios, facilit una exploracin hacia nuevos
lenguajes del arte que permitieran una reflexin social y cultural; en
este plano, la superacin de la vanguardia histrica con su mxima
representacin en el cubismo y el expresionismo, entre otros movimientos de la primera mitad del siglo pasado fue radical. La intrusin
multidisciplinar en las artes plsticas marc un hito sin precedentes
con el collage y la serigrafa o con la inclusin de objetos encontrados
que aparecan sobre los lienzos como si de pintura o dibujo se tratase.
El color puro y brillante invadi las paredes de muchos hogares, se
hizo posible hablar de arte sin tener que saber de tcnicas, conceptos o
movimientos histrico-artsticos.
En el mbito conceptual, el pop art se concibi como un medio de
masas para la difusin del arte y lo que surgi a partir de esa premisa fue una expresin artstica que ha sido muy alabada y criticada,
a su vez, por esa misma masa social. A pesar de esa vocacin de
masas intrnseca, la actitud de algunos de los artistas segua estando
dentro de los lmites inaccesibles del arte contemporneo.

are one of the major scenarios for advertising. This massive proliferation of the image in which we are immersed almost without
realising it, without heading what we are told or thinking about what

publicidad. Esta masiva proliferacin de la imagen en la que estamos

inmersos casi sin darnos cuenta, sin reparar en lo que nos transmite
ni reflexionar en lo que nos rodea adquiere hoy dimensiones de una
autntica invasin del espacio cotidiano. Por otro lado, los iconos de
los cincuenta perduran de generacin en generacin y otros nuevos se
han ido incorporando, creando una iconografa de vanguardia.

popular para manifiestar aquello en lo que estamos poniendo el foco.
Estos ejemplos son solo un mnimo apunte del universo pop art. El
deleite en la imagen icnica sigue teniendo una gran fuerza dcada tras dcada, tanto para los artistas como para el pblico que lo
contempla. Millares de imgenes nuevas se manifiestan ante nuestros
ojos cada da, con la ayuda de la tecnologa ms avanzada, y lo hacen
a un ritmo difcilmente asimilable por el espectador. No podemos
alcanzar a visualizar todas las imgenes que generan los artistas,
necesitados de expresar continuamente lo que vivimos, y muchas no
alcanzan ni siquiera su efmero minuto de gloria.
El gran icono popular en la sociedad de hoy es la imagen en s
misma, no la imagen de algo o alguien en concreto. En este sentido,
la celebracin del pop art, despus de ms de cincuenta aos de sus
primeras expresiones, alcanza su mxima manifestacin en la propia
idiosincrasia de la sociedad en la que vivimos: la sociedad de la imagen
y la informacin, independientemente de cul sea su contenido.
Con este devenir, podramos afirmar que el pop ha acercado el
arte al pueblo y lo popular, al arte visual. Pero quizs no podemos confirmar que la necesaria reflexin a la que invita el pop art
sobre el consumismo, la globalizacin y el ritmo vertiginoso de la
informacin a travs de la imagen haya calado en nosotros. Quizs
tengan que ser los propios iconos que hemos creado al respecto
quienes tomen un respiro y se paren a pensar.

El artista Nadin Ospina (Bogot, 1960), con sus esculturas del universo
Disney, los Simpson y dems personajes tanto las posturas en que
coloca a los personajes como los materiales que utiliza para realizarlos
nos trasladan a la era precolombina, con sus dolos hierticos son una
buena muestra de cmo la importancia histrica del icono sigue viva y
continu siendo necesaria para el ser humano, en cuanto a su funcin
de proyectar las referencias sociales.
Por su parte, Yayoi Kusama (1929) es un importante ejemplo de
trayectoria artstica vinculada, entre otros movimientos contemporneos, a los orgenes del pop art. En la obra de esta artista japonesa
perduran elementos caractersticos del pop art, como el intenso
colorido y la repeticin de formas obsesivas, que son, a su vez, resultado de sus experiencias vitales aunque esto es algo que forma parte
tambin de un imaginario colectivo. Esta singular expresin actual
desborda el clsico de la imagen pop, aunque mantiene en comn la
necesidad de introducirse en la cultura popular.
En la mxima expresin pop art hacer fcil y cercano el arte al
espectador se sitan en la actualidad las creaciones del norteamericano Jeff Koons (1955). Catalogada de kitsch, su obra intenta reflexionar
sobre lo superfluo y banal del consumismo, captando la atencin con
obras de grandes dimensiones ubicadas en espacios pblicos y el uso de

surrounds us nowadays acquires the dimensions of a veritable invasion of our daily life. Secondly, the icons of the fifties survive from one
generation to another and other new ones have been included to create
a cutting-edge iconography.
CUTTING-EDGE ICONOGRAPHY
Artist Nadin Ospina (Bogot, 1960), with his sculptures of the Disney
universe, the Simpsons and other characters for which he uses materials and gives them postures that take us back to the Pre-Columbian
era with its hieratic idols are a good example of how the historical
importance of the icon continues to be alive and necessary for the
human being, in terms of its function of projecting social references.
On her part, Japanese artist Yayoi Kusama (1929) is an important example of an artistic career associated with the origins of pop
art, amongst other contemporary movements, which still persist
in
her work on account of the intense colours and repetition of obsessional forms used, as in some way, a result of her life experiences
although this is something that also forms part of collective imagery.
This current, original expression overrides the classical nature of the
pop image, even though it continues to have in common the need to
penetrate popular culture.
At the present time, pop arts maximum expression: i.e. to make art
easy and draw closer to the spectator, is in creations by the U.S. artist
Jeff Koons (1955). Catalogued as kitsch, the intention of his work is to
reflect upon the superfluous, banal nature of consumerism, attracting the
attention of the spectator with large scale works of art in public spaces; striking,
golden colours in forceful icons of social group values, such as Popeye or the Pink
Panther. Criticism is intrinsic to popular art in order to stress what we are focusing
upon.
These examples are only a minimum detail of the pop art universe. Enjoyment
of the iconic image has continued to have great impact through the decades, as
much for artists as for the public who views it. Thousands of new images appear before our eyes every day with the aid of latest generation technology, and this happens
at a speed which is hard to assimilate for the spectator. We cannot achieve visualisation of all the images generated by artists continually in need of expressing what we
are experiencing and many do not even reach their ephe-meral minute of glory.
The great popular icon in todays society is the image in itself. In this context,
the celebration of pop art, after over fifty years of existence since its initial
expressions reaches its maximum demonstration in the idiosyncrasy of
the society in which we are living: the society of imagery and information,
irrespective of its contents.
With this process we could affirm that pop has brought art closer to the
people and popular elements closer to visual art. But we probably cannot
confirm that the necessary reflection that pop art invites one to make
regarding consumerism, globalisation and the crazy rhythm of information through the image, has really been brought home. Maybe it has to
be the icons themselves which we have created for this purpose that
take a break and stop to think.

edicin del Premio Eurostars
de Narrativa

Begoa Oro is the winner of the

10th edition of the Eurostars
Travel Narrative Award

La escritora aragonesa Begoa Oro fue la ganadora de la dcima

edicin del Premio Eurostars Hotels de Narrativa de Viajes, con la
obra Buenas Noches, Miami! (puede leer un fragmento a partir de la
pgina 60 de esta revista), donde, segn la propia autora, habla sobre
la vida, el miedo, las ilusiones, la lengua, crecer, envejecer y querer
ser feliz, porque como dice el cobrador del peaje que une Miami con
Miami Beach, Life is smpol, mi amol. Buenas Noches, Miami! es
una autoficcin con rasgos de novela de viajes, mucho humor, pinceladas de amor y toques de poesa.
El premio consiste en una dotacin econmica de 18.000 euros, adems de su distribucin gratuita en los establecimientos de Eurostars
Hotels. Asimismo, RBA Libros edita la obra para su comercializacin
en libreras de toda Espaa.
Organizado por el Grupo Hotusa, RBA Libros y la Universidad de Barcelona, el jurado estuvo compuesto por un miembro de cada una de las
entidades convocantes y por los escritores Carme Riera y Alfredo Conde.
Con ms de 150 manuscritos, el premio registr el mayor nmero
de participantes desde su creacin en 2005. La recepcin de obras
para la siguiente edicin del premio termina en febrero de 2015. Ms

The writer from Aragon, Begoa Oro, has been the winner of the tenth
edition of the Eurostars Travel Narrative Award with her entry entitled
Buenas Noches, Miami! (Good Evening, Miami!) in which, to quote
her own words, the author talks about life, fear, hopes, language,
growing up, aging and wanting to be happy, because as the toll booth
operator on the stretch that joins Miami with Miami Beach says, Life is
smpol, mi amol!. Buenas Noches, Miami! is autobiographical fiction
with traces of a travel novel, plenty of humour, brushstrokes of love and
touches of poetry.
The prize carries a purse of 18,000 euros, in addition to free distribution to all the establishments belonging to the Eurostars chain. Likewise,
RBA Libros publishes the book for sale in bookshops throughout Spain.
Organized by the Hotusa Group, RBA Libros and Barcelona University, the jury was made up by a member from each of the sponsoring
entities and by writers Carme Riera and Alfredo Conde.
With a total this year of over 150 entries, the competition has registered the largest number of participants since its creation in 2005. Reception of entries for the next edition of the award finalises in February

formato que hemos titulado Noches Breves. El libro se
encuentra en formato bilinge ingls y espaol- en todas
las habitaciones de los hoteles Eurostars en pases de
habla no hispana. Noches Breves es un libro escrito por

After four years of the Eurostars Short Stories Contest and with the fifth edition under way, Eurostars has

Ya sabamos que Eurostars Hotels eran hoteles con cultura, pero, hasta ahora, disciplinas como el cine y el teatro tenan difcil encaje. Eso ha cambiado
desde el pasado verano con la inauguracin de Black Marina, la fabulosa
terraza 360 del Eurostars Grand Marina, con panormicas de Barcelona y
el mar. El teatro estuvo protagonizado por Improshow, un grupo que desarrolla su trama improvisando al hilo de lo que los espectadores sugieren al
inicio de la funcin. El cine tiene tambin su entrada en las Black Marina
Summer Nights, gracias a un acuerdo con la productora Filmax.
Abrir las terrazas panormicas y llenarlas de contenido de ocio y cultura
cuando la climatologa ms acompaa es una de las apuestas de Eurostars
en el futuro prximo. El Eurostars Gran Valencia, con su fabulosa azotea en
la planta 24, tambin se ha sumado al proyecto.
We were already aware that Eurostars Hotels were culture-orientated
hotels, but up to now, art forms such as the cinema and the theatre were
difficult to fit in. That has changed since last summer with the opening
of Black Marina, the fabulous 360-view terrace, with panoramic vistas
over Barcelona and the Mediterranean. The theatricals were performed by
Improshow, a group who develops themes improvising the story line based
on suggestions made by the spectators at the beginning of the show. Movies
have also made their appearance in Black Marina Summer Nights, thanks to
an agreement with the film production company, Filmax.
To open wide the panoramic terraces and fill them with leisure and cultural
entertainment when the weather permits is one of the bets made by Eurostars for the near future. The Eurostars Gran Valencia, with its fabulous
rooftop terrace on the 24th floor has also joined the project.

Poco a poco Berln se ha
consolidado como una de las
ciudades ms importantes en la
promocin del arte contemporneo emergente. Actualmente
nadie pone en duda que exponer en la ciudad alemana es un
hito en la carrera de cualquier
artista. El pequeo espacio
expositivo en el Eurostars
Berln participa de ese espritu
artstico de la ciudad, y por
eso intentamos reflejarlo en
nuestras exposiciones temporales, en las que apostamos por
dar visibilidad a artistas con un
lenguaje propio.
En septiembre, coincidiendo con las ferias de arte que
se realizan en la ciudad, se
inaugur en nuestro espacio la exposicin de Nuno
Veigas. El artista portugus ha
seleccionado quince dibujos
en los que evoca recuerdos y
referencias al imaginario de la
cultura pop, convirtiendo a la

obra en una reinterpretacin

de su memoria visual.
A partir de enero, despus
de la exposicin del I Premio
Eurostars Berlin de Fotografa,
el hotel albergar los retratos
sobre madera de Lorena Halbig.
La artista alemana fusiona los
trazos del pincel que crea la mirada profunda de los retratos con
la textura y riqueza del soporte
en madera.
Las exposiciones son de
entrada libre y se encuentran
situadas en el hall del hotel.
The variety of pictorial techLittle by little, Berlin has become
consolidated as one of the most
important cities in the promotion of contemporary, emergent
art. At present, no-one has any
doubt that exhibiting in Berlin is
a milestone in the career of any
artist. The small exhibition space
at the Eurostars Berlin partakes
in this artistic spirit of the city

and, because of this, we try to mirror it in our temporary exhibitions,

in which we take a bet on giving
visibility to artists with a language
of their own.
This September, coinciding with
the art fairs that are held in the city,
we have the pleasure of opening
our exhibition space with work by
Nuno Viegas. This Portuguese artist
has selected fifteen drawings in
which he evokes recollections and
references from pop-art imagery,
turning his work into a reinterpretation of his visual memory.
From January through to March,
following the first edition of the
Eurostars Berlin Photography Prize,
we shall proudly house portraits on
wood by Lorena Halbig. This German artist blends the brushstrokes
that create the deep gaze of her
portraits with the texture and richness of the wooden support.
The exhibitions are open to the
public and are to be found in the
hotel lobby.

diferentes, ngulos no convencionales y esos pequeos detalles
que muchas veces nos dan ms
informacin que el conjunto.
Katy Pastors spatial
expressions have taken her
outside herself. Her curiosity
has taken her to explore
buildings as yet uninhabited,
as though wanting to know
them before they become filled
with other lives. Her spaces
communicate with light and
shadow, with large masses
and their chromatic harmonies.
This artist has always sought
out different spots, non-

conventional angles and those

little details that often give
us more information than the
whole.

from Venezuela, Dina Atencio,
practices figurative painting
starring women. Their feminine
figures are elongated and stylized,
full of sensuality and surrounded
by an aura of calmness, uncertainty and patience. A universe
that directs the spectator towards
reflection beyond that of the mere
nude body.

Biennale de Arquitectura (hasta el
23 de noviembre de 2014) o vivir los
carnavales (a mediados de febrero
de 2015) constituyen dos razones
de peso para visitar una ciudad que
no necesita razones para visitarla
porque nos llama ms con el
corazn que con la cabeza.

two weighty reasons for visiting a
city which does not need any reasons
for visiting it because it calls
us more from the heart than
from the head.

Es ms fcil escribir sobre cualquier otra ciudad del mundo que sobre
esta porque, al igual que sobre el amor, sobre Venecia, la Serenissima, todos han escrito, todos han dicho algo. El escritor Gore Vidal
confesaba en uno de sus libros de memorias lo mucho que le gustara
volver a su Venecia, a la Venecia donde Peggy Guggenheim tomaba
el sol semidesnuda en el palacio Venier dei Leoni. Vidal aoraba esa
ciudad que an no haba sido devorada por el turismo de masas,
esa Venecia cuya decadencia es parte intrnseca de su belleza; esa
Venecia frecuentada en el siglo XIX y principios del XX nicamente
por las grandes fortunas que viajaban acompaadas de un ejrcito de
sirvientes cargando bales. Ahora mismo, al desembarcar de uno de
los varios vaporettos que arriban en el Bacino de San Marcos, uno se
encuentra con una marabunta de smartphones apuntando su cmara
a todas partes y piensa cmo es posible que no haya cada da dos o
ms turistas que acaben dndose un chapuzn por caminar siempre
pertrechados tras una pantalla. A pesar de todo, ese turismo reconcentrado ni logra desbaratar la imagen decadente de la ciudad ni evita
que se pueda disfrutar de una Venecia ms ntima, e incluso solitaria.
Slo hay que saber descubrirla y, si lo logramos, nos quitaremos de
encima esa imagen de parque temtico que en ocasiones la amenaza.
Solo hay un lugar en el mundo ms hermoso que Venecia, y es la
Serenissima reflejada en sus propias aguas. Y solo hay algo que supere esa visin: su recuerdo. La ciudad se construy para asombrar.
Con el saqueo de Constantinopla, el Doge Dandolo se pag una ciudad de ensueo y la Repblica Serennisima; como todos los nuevos
ricos, decidi construir en Venecia la capital de las maravillas. Todos
temen que la ciudad se hunda y se pergean proyectos millonarios.
Mientras el verdadero hundimiento es la despoblacin de Venecia.
Con solo 60.000 habitantes en el casco histrico la mitad de ellos de
ms de 65 aos de da, miles de turistas aceleran su pulso; de noche,
Venecia se queda a solas.
La temporada que va de principios de otoo a principios de primavera es tal vez la mejor para visitar Venecia; ms all, el calor y los olores que desprenden algunos canales pueden hacer que no disfrutemos
plenamente. Adems, la XIV edicin de la Biennale de Arquitectura,
(que este ao dirige Rem Koolhaas) hasta el 23 de noviembre, o los
famosos carnavales venecianos constituyen dos momentos de gran
inters. El carnaval surgi a partir de 1480, cuando se instaur la
tradicin de que la nobleza se disfrazara para salir a mezclarse con el
pueblo. En el siglo XVIII alcanz su mximo esplendor: a l acudan
viajeros y aristcratas de toda Europa, en busca de diversin y placer.
Si bien la piazza di San Marco (el saln ms elegante de Europa,
en palabras de Napolen) es el centro por excelencia en torno a l
todas las calles estn plagadas de hoteles, restaurantes y tiendas pensadas para el turista, no debemos dejar de lado todas las maravillas
que ofrecen los seis sestieres (distritos): el propio San Marco, San
Polo, Dorsoduro, Santa Croce, Cannaregio y Castello. Y para que
no nos quede nada sin ver (aunque seguramente regresaremos del
viaje con el firme propsito de visitar de nuevo Venecia), haremos
tambin un breve recorrido por Murano, Giudecca y el Lido.

It is easier to write about any other city in the world because, as with
love, everybody has written something about Venice, the Serenissima,
veryone has said something. Writer Gore Vidal admitted in one of his
books of memoires how much he would love to return to his Venice,
to the Venice where Peggy Guggenheim would sunbathe semi-nude in
the Palazzo Venier dei Leoni. Vidal missed that city as yet undevoured
by tourism; that Venice whose decadence is an intrinsic part of its
beauty; that Venice frequented in the 19th and 20th centuries only by
the great fortunes who travelled accompanied by an retinue of servants carrying trunks. Nowadays, as one disembarks from one of the
many vaporetti that land at Bacino de San Marco, one is confronted
by a plague of smartphones aiming their cameras in every direction
and one wonders how it is possible for tourists do not end up falling
into the water every day as they always walk around preceded by a
screen. Despite all, that high concentration of tourists does not spoil
the decadent image of the city nor does it prevent one from enjoying
a more intimate, even solitary, Venice. One only has to discover it and,
if one manages to do so, one will eliminate that image of a theme park
that occasionally menaces it.
There is only one place in the world more beautiful than Venice, and
that is the Serenissima reflected in its own waters. And there is only
one thing that surpasses this beauty: its memory. The city was built to
amaze. With the Siege of Constantinople, the Doge Dandolo paid for a
dream city and the Repubblica Serenissima; as all the newly enriched,
he decided to build a capital of marvels and make a living out of them.
Everybody is afraid that Venice is sinking and millionaire salvage
projects are being drawn up, however, the real collapse of Venice is
the diminishing of its population. With only 60,000 inhabitants in the
old city, half of them over the age of 65, during the day the tourists
increase its pulse rate; at night, Venice is left alone.
The season that runs from the beginning of autumn to the beginning of spring is perhaps the best for visiting Venice; beyond that time
of the year, the heat and the smells given off by some canals can impede
ones full enjoyment. What is more, the 14th edition of the 2014 Architecture Biennale (under the curatorship this year of Rem Koolhaas)
until 23rd November, or the famous Venetian Carnivals constitute two
moments of great interest. The Carnival celebrations date back to 1480
when the tradition began of the nobility donning disguises in order
to mix with the people. In the 18th century, it reached its maximum
splendour: travellers and aristocrats throughout Europe flocked to the
city in search of entertainment and pleasure.
While the Piazza di San Marco, (the most elegant living room in
Europe, words pronounced by Napoleon) is undoubtedly the centre around it all the streets are packed with hotels, restaurants and
shops for the tourist we must not leave aside all the marvels offered
by the six sestieres (districts): San Marco itself, San Polo, Dorsoduro,
Santa Croce, Cannaregio and Castello. And so that we leave no stones
unturned (although we shall most probably return from our trip with
the firm intention off visiting Venice again), we will also take a brief
tour through Murano, Giudecca and the Lido.

Cada sestiere es una de las seis zonas

o distritos en las que se divide la ciudad: Cannaregio, Castello, Dorsoduro,
San Marco, San Polo y Santa Croce.
La ciudad es una intrincada red de
canales, calles y callejuelas (resulta
relativamante fcil perderse) que encuentran desahogo en otra infinidad
de campos, como se denomina a las
plazas.
Empezando desde el sur, Dorsoduro (espalda dura) est habitado desde el siglo VII. En este sestiere se encuentran la pinacoteca de la Academia,
la Fundacin Peggy Guggenheim, los
palacios Ca Foscari y Ca Rezzonico, y
la impresionante iglesia de Santa Mara
della Salute, de estilo barroco. La isla
de Guidecca pertenece a este sestiere
y es recomendable visitarla y sentarse
en una de sus terrazas al borde del canal del mismo nombre para contemplar
el amanecer sobre Dorsoduro y el Bacino de San Marcos.
Atravesando el puente de la Academia nos encontraremos en el sestiere
de San Marco, el ms turstico, con
el Palacio Ducal, la Baslica de San
Marcos (obra maestra de la influencia
bizantina en la regin del Vneto) e infinidad de callejuelas repletas de tien-

das, hoteles y restaurantes. Subiendo

por el Gran Canal llegaremos a los
sestieres de San Polo y Santa Croce,
los ms pintorescos y autnticos de la
ciudad. Aqu se encuentran el puente
de Rialto, el Mercado (todo un espectculo) y los tpicos bares venecianos,
los bacari.
El barrio de Cannaregio, al norte, es
el ms extenso y populoso de la ciudad despus de Castello. Es ineludible
la visita a las iglesias de SantAlvise, la
Madonna dellOrto, SantIpi Duni, Santa
Maria Assunta (les Gesuiti) y la esplndida Santa Mara de los Milagros, primer ejemplo de iglesia renacentista de
Venecia. Tambin en este sestiere se
encuentra el Ghetto y varias lneas de
vaporetti que conducen a la isla de San
Michele, Murano, Burano y Torcello.
Castello, al este, es el sestiere ms
grande y heterodoxo: abarca desde la
zona ms turstica que rodea al Palacio Ducal, hasta la ms humilde, que
corresponde a la morada de los antiguos trabajadores del astillero. Una
gran parte del barrio est ocupada
precisamente por el enorme astillero
conocido como Arsenale. Uno de los
puntos clave a destacar es la Baslica
de Santi Giovanni e Paolo.

Venice, from sestiere to sestiere

A sestiere is one of the six zones or districts
into which the city is divided: Cannaregio,
Castello, Dorsoduro, San Marco, San Polo
and Santa Croce. The city is an intricate network of canals, streets and alleys (its relatively easy to get oneself lost), which find respite in another infinity of campos, as squares
are called.
Starting from the south, Dorsoduro (hardback) has been inhabited since the 7th century. In this sestiere one can find the Accademia picture gallery, the Peggy Guggenheim
Foundation, the CaFoscari y CaRezzonico
Palaces (the latter is the museum that houses
18th century Venetian art) and the impressive
church of Santa Maria della Salute, in baroque style. The island of Guidecca belongs to
this sestiere and it is a place to visit and sit at

one of the outdoor cafes on the bank of the

canal of the same name to watch the sun rise
over Venice.
Crossing over the Accademia Bridge we
come to the sestiere of San Marco, the most
touristic, with the Ducal Palace, the Basilica
of San Marco (a masterpiece of Byzantine
influence in the Veneto region) and a maze
of alleyways packed with shops, hotels and
restaurants.
Going up through the Grand Canal we will
reach the sestieres of San Polo and Santa
Croce, the most picturesque and authentic of
the city. Here is where the Rialto Bridge, the
Market (a veritable spectacle) and the typical
Venetian bars, the bacari, are to be found.
The district of Cannaregio, to the north, is
the citys largest and most densely populated

after Castello. Not to be missed are visits to

the churches of SantAlvise, the Madonna
dellOrto, SantIpi Duni, Santa Maria Assunta
(the Gesuiti) and the splendid Santa Mara of
the Miracles, the finest example of a Renaissance church in Venice. Also in this sestiere is
the Ghetto and the vaporetti that service the
islands of San Michele, Murano, Burano and
Torcello.
Castello, to the east, is the largest and
most unorthodox: it takes in the most touristic area surrounding the Ducal Palace, down
to the most humble, which is the part where the former shipyard workers used to live.
A large part of the district is taken up by the
enormous shipyard known as the Arsenale.
One of the key points to highlight is the Basilica of Santi Giovanni e Paolo.

CICCHETTIS, SPRITZ Y UN PASEO

POR EL MERCADO DE RIALTO
El Mercado de Rialto es uno de los lugares de mayor encanto en toda Venecia. Se ubica en el sestiere de San Paolo (barrio en el que se encuentran los
ms antiguos e importantes edificios de la ciudad de estilo vneto-bizantino),
a escasos metros del puente de Rialto, construido en 1250. Hay dos zonas: la
Erberia (puestos de verdura) y la Pescheria. La Pescheria, bajo el prtico de una
construccin neogtica, que llega hasta el Gran Canal, es la lonja del pescado a
la que, desde la madrugada, llegan las barcas con el producto fresco de la mar.
Las calles aledaas estn plagadas de bacari, bares tpicos en los que disfrutar
de los cichetti (tapas tpicas venecianas): la cocina italiana tiene una merecida
fama, y no podemos dejar de probar las tapas de pan tostado con bacal mantecato (bacalao mantecado) o musetto (loncha de polenta con salsa de morro),
acompaado de un buen vino o de un spritz, un cctel a base de vino prosecco,
sifn y Aperol o Campari, una combinacin tan deliciosa como peligrosa, por la
alta gradacin alcohlica y la suavidad de su sabor. Los das de sol, los bacari del
campo Cesare Battisti gi della Bella Vienna registran una actividad inusitada;
tambin los callejones que rodean La Pescheria estn llenos de bares en los que
degustar tapas de pescado fresco.
En realidad, cada vez que las calles se abren para desembocar en un campo,
proliferan las terrazas y los bacari; tambin resulta fascinante encontrar en
algunos de los canales ms estrechos una algaraba de bares y vinotecas en cuya
puerta, a dos metros escasos del agua, se agolpan los clientes. Por sugerir alguno,
en Fondamenta Nani, casi llegando a Fondamenta Zattere, en Dorsoduro, encontramos la Cantine del Vino Schiavi: tienen una seleccin de vinos formidable y una
autntica mamma que prepara unos de los mejores cichetti de toda Venecia.
Para reponer fuerzas, nada mejor que terminar en una terraza en Fondamenta Zattere Ai Gesuati, contemplando el atardecer sobre el Canal de Guidecca.

CICHETTI, SPRITZ AND A STROLL

THROUGH THE RIALTO MARKET
The Rialto is one of the most delightful places in the whole of Venice. It is to be
found in the Sestiere de S. Paolo (the district in which the oldest, most important
buildings in Venetian-Byzantine style are located), only a few metres away from
the bridge built in 1250. There are two sections: La Erberia (greengrocery stalls)
and La Pescheria. La Pescheria, set beneath the portico of a neo-gothic structure
which reaches as far as the Grand Canal, is a fish market where boats carrying
fresh fish from the sea begin to arrive from the early hours. The adjoining streets
are packed with bacari, the typical bars for relishing in cichetti (typical Venetian
tapas): Italian cuisine deserves its fame and we should not miss sampling the
tapas made of toasted bread with bacalla alla mantecata (creamed dried cod) or
musetto (a spicy sausage), washed down with a good wine or a spritz, a cocktail
made from Prosecco wine, soda and Aperol or Campari, a combination as delicious as it is dangerous on account of its high alcohol content and the delicacy of
its flavour. On sunny days, the bacari on Cesare Battisti gi della Bella Vienna are
abuzz with activity. Equally full are the bars surrounding La Pescheria where one
can sample fresh fish tapas.
In fact, whenever streets open up to run onto a piece of land, open-air bars
and cafes proliferate; it is also fascinating to find on some of the narrowest canals a noisy crowd of people gathered at each door of the bars and wine cellars,
barely a couple of metres from the water. Just to recommend one, on Fondamenta Nani, almost reaching Fondamenta Zattere, at Dorsoduro, we can find Cantine
del Vino Schiavi: which has a selection of fabulous wines and a mamma who
prepares some of the best cichetti in Venice.
For recharging ones batteries, nothing better than to end the day at a
terrace on Fondamenta Zattere Ai Gesuati, contemplating sundown over the
Guidecca Canal.

LA PORTA DACQUA
La Residenza Cannaregio conserva una de las tradiciones
ms arraigadas de los palacios de alcurnia venecianos: la
porta dacqua. Como indica su nombre, la porta dacqua
es el acceso que da directamente al canal y que permite
a nuestros huspedes llegar y salir del hotel en taxi o en
gndola sin necesidad de pisar la calle.

THE PORTA DACQUA

The Eurostars Residenza Cannaregio retains one of the
most deeply rooted traditions of Venetian palaces of
noble lineage: the porta dacqua (door onto the water).
As its name indicates, it is the access which opens out
directly onto the canal and allows guests to land and
depart from the hotel by water-taxi or gondola without

asociacin semntica horoscpica nunca vista
en Espaa, el grabado de un cangrejo.
Veo inmensos hospitales, asambleas de Dios,
lavanderas y barberas, y un letrero en el Versailles que dice Se ruega a todas las personas
que vienen a conversar que lo hagan fuera de la
cafetera, gracias, y lluvia, y mujeres esperando
un autobs bajo la lluvia, y en el autobs, caras
de cansancio como las del metro de Madrid. Veo
hombres perdidos, sucios y solitarios deambulando por los semforos. Veo homeless.
Veo un paraguas con una varilla rota, abierto
boca abajo, tirado en medio de la calle. Veo, un
domingo a pleno sol, un enorme aparcamiento
exterior con un solo coche y, a diez metros, un
hombre durmiendo directamente en el suelo
a la sombra del edificio de Venture Hive, una
aceleradora e incubadora de empresas tecnolgicas signifique eso lo que signifique, la
oportunidad para acelerar tu startup en Miami.
Veo hombres que fingen no estar solos
bebiendo junto a otros hombres solos cada
noche en el mismo bar del mismo hotel, cerca
de su casa.
Veo casas de mierda en Opa-Locka, rodeadas
de alambradas.
Veo un piano de cola tumbado sobre un lado
y amordazado con una cinta blanca en el almacn del Pabelln de Espaa en la Feria del Libro.
Veo nios que no tienen recreo y escritores
que no tienen lectores.
Veo llorar a dreamers, jvenes que llegaron
sin papeles a Estados Unidos cuando eran nios.
Veo semforos que cuelgan melanclicos de
cables que unen dos lejanas orillas como en un
vuelo transocenico.
Veo gente que no tiene xito.
Todo lo que necesitas es amor. Pero Miami
es Estados Unidos. Aqu no se regala nada, y
mucho menos eso.

project valued at over a thousand-million dollars, a

There are not many antiques to be found in
Miami, but one of them was discovered in 1998, at
401 Brickell Avenue, in the city centre. First it was

was found when excavating the foundations of a
skyscraper which was going to be that stroke over
that perfect circle.

laundries and barber shops and a sign at the Versailles that reads We request all people who have
come here to chat to do so outside the caf. Thank
you. And rain; and women waiting for a bus in the
rain; and in the bus, tired faces like in the Madrid
metro. I see men lost, dirty and lonely wandering
about at the traffic lights. I see homeless people.

down and open, thrown away in the middle of the
road. On a Sunday in the blazing sun, I see an
enormous outdoor car park with one, sole car and,
ten metres away, a man sleeping on the ground in
the shade of the Venture Hive building, an accelerator and incubator for technology firms whatever
that means the opportunity for accelerating your
start-up in Miami.
I see men who pretend they are not lonely, drinking with other men who are on their own, every
night at the same bar at the same hotel, close to
their homes.
I see shit houses in Opa-locka, hemmed in with
barbed wire.
I see a grand piano resting on its side and gagged
with white tape in the Spanish Pavilion warehouse
at the Book Fair.
I see children who have no playtime and writers
who have no readers.
I see dreamers weeping, young people who arrived in the United States without papers when they

Sicilia. Concretamente, las colinas en los alrededores de la ciudad de Verona producen los vinos ms famosos de la regin: el
Bardolino (rojo, blanco, nuevo y espumoso), Blanco de Custoza,
Valpolicella y Soave. En la familia del Valpolicella se encuentra
el Amarone de Valpolicella, considerado uno de los mejores
tintos italianos a nivel internacional.
En el rea de las llanuras cerca del ro Adige se producen
vinos blancos como Garganega, Pinot Bianco, Chardonnay y

imposible comer mal, aunque nos limitsemos a picar algo
rpido en un puesto callejero. Es tambin un pas que conserva una de las tradiciones gastronmico-sociales ms placenteras, muy del gusto de la cultura mediterrnea: el aperitivo. La
costumbre est muy arraigada en toda Italia, pero especialmente
en el norte. En Venecia, adems, es todo un arte. La tradicin se
denomina andare per ombre e cichetti, que viene a significar ir
por sombras y bocadillos. Lo de las sombras es una metfora: al
parecer, en el siglo XIX los vendedores ambulantes que ofrecan
vino a los turistas y recin llegados se refugiaban a la sombra de
los campanarios para evitar que la bebida se calentase, as que andar
por las sombras vena a significar consumir vino en la calle. Por su
parte, los cicchetti (pequeos bocadillos) nacieron en las trattorie (los
bacari) de antao destinadas a quienes queran comer de pie slo un
pequeo bocado o a aquellos que no podan pagar una comida completa. Los cicchetti se suelen acompaar de vino Prosecco o, en muchas
zonas del norte de Italia, de Spritz. Los cicchetti ms consumidos son
baccal mantecata (tostada de pan untada con pasta de bacalao), polpetti (albndigas de carne o arroz sazonadas), pulpos con polenta, pinzas de cangrejo fritas, anchoas con huevo duro, sarde en saor (sardinas
en escabeche con pasas de uva y piones), verduras fritas (pimientos
rojos y verdes, berenjenas y otros) y molecche (cangrejos pescados en
el momento de la muda).

one of the street stalls. It is also a country that has carefully preserved one of the most pleasant social eating traditions, which
is much to the taste of Mediterranean culture: the aperitif. The
custom is very well-rooted throughout Italy, especially in the
north. In Venice, moreover, it is a real art. The tradition receives
the name of andare per ombre e cicchetti, which translates
literally to walk through shades and snacks. The reference
to the shade is a metaphor: apparently in the 19th century the
street vendors who offered wine to tourists and travellers would
take shelter in the shade of the belfries to avoid the wine getting too
warm, therefore, walking in the shade came to mean drinking wine
in the street. As to the cicchetti, they originated in the little trattoria
restaurants of old (the bacari), devoted to people who wished to have
a bite on the hoof or those who could not afford a full meal. The
cicchetti are usually accompanied by a Prosecco wine or, in many
parts of northern Italy, a Spritz. The most popular cicchetti are baccal mantecata (toasted bread with a cod fish paste), polpetti (meat
or savoury rice dumplings), octopus with polenta, fried crab pincers,
anchovies with hardboiled egg, sarde en saor (pickled sardines with
grapes and pine nuts), fried vegetables (red and green peppers, aubergines and other vegetables) and molecche (crayfish caught when
shedding their shells).

un lugar agradable, donde los das transcurren entre el placer y el sosiego. Nada ms lejos en el caso del Hotel Dolphin
y, concretamente, de su Habitacin 1408, pelcula basada en
un relato de Stephen King. .
Mike Enslin (John Cusack) es un escritor de novelas de terror que, lejos de creerse lo que escribe, hace gala de un frreo
escepticismo en todo lo que atae a sucesos sobrenaturales. Tal
es su escepticismo, que en ocasiones viaja a lugares donde algunos afirman que ocurren fenmenos paranormales con la nica
intencin de poner en evidencia lo que l considera burdos
montajes. Uno de esos lugares es la habitacin 1408 del Hotel Dolphin,
en Nueva York. A pesar de la oposicin del gerente del hotel, Enslin se
empea en alojarse en esa habitacin y es posible que, por primera vez,
el escritor vaya a vivir una autntica experiencia paranormal.
Habitacin 1408 es una pelcula de terror clsico, una de las adaptaciones ms exitosas de la obra de Stephen King, aunque sin llegar
a la altura del gran mito Carrie (Brian de Palma, 1976). El film ana
terror, suspense y grandes dosis de claustrofobia. Los exteriores fueron
rodados en el hotel Roosvelt de Nueva York. Como curiosidad, en la
realidad no existe un Hotel Dolphin en Nueva York, pero s hay uno en
Southampton (Inglaterra), aunque tampoco all encontraremos una
habitacin con la numeracin 1408.

case of the Dolphin Hotel, precisely in Room 1408, a movie
based on the story by Stephen King.
Mike Enslin (John Cusack) is a horror story writer who,
far from believing all that he writes, boasts of his unshaking
scepticism about all that concerns supernatural happenings.
His scepticism is such that on occasions he travels to locations
where paranormal phenomena are said to have taken place, with
the sole intention of uncovering what he considers to be clumsy
set ups. One of these locations is room 1408 in the Dolphin Hotel in
New York. Despite the opposition of the hotel manager, Enslin insists
on being accommodated in that room and the possibility arises, for the
first time, of the writer actually living a true paranormal experience.
Room 1408 is a classic horror movie, one of the most successful
adaptations of a Stephen King novel, while it does not come up to the
standard of the mythical Carrie (Brian de Palma, 1976). It is a film
that combines terror, suspense and large doses of claustrophobia. The
exteriors were shot at the Roosevelt Hotel in New York. As a curiosity, in fact there is no Dolphin Hotel in New York but there is one
in Southampton (England), however, no room is be found with the
number 1408.
