6th Sunday of Easter
29th Sunday in Ordinary Time (Year A)
World Mission Sunday
A
question is asked either to genuinely
seek the truth or just simply to
propagate hypocrisy and dishonesty
in order to seek the downfall of an enemy.
The Gospel today tells us that the
Pharisees and the Herodians was to seek
the downfall of Jesus by simply asking a
question.
Before dealing with their question and
Jesus answer, we will try to know a little of
who the Pharisees and Herodians were.
The Pharisees were devout laymen and
interpreters of the Law. They meticulously
observed the Law and even added more
rules. They exploited the poor under the
pretext of piety. They represented by and
large the intellectual sector of the Jewish
people. They were very active, noisy in
making their feelings known and had the
intense desire to argue. Their insensitivity
and single-mindedness resulted in a harsh
and uncharitable emphasis on the legal
aspects of religion at the expense of
charity and loving concern, thus
were hated by the poor.
Who was Jesus to the
Pharisees? Jesus was a threat
to their intellectual security
and leadership. Why?
Jesus exposed their self-
righteousness and called
them hypocrites and
whitewashed tombs.
Actually, the entire
chapter 23 of Matthews
Gospel is a lenghty, detailed
indictment or accusation of
Pharisee mentality. Because
of these, they showed
displeasure to anything
Jesus did, and they wanted
to get even with Him. They
became hostile with Him.
The Pharisees were against
the Herodians who favored
cooperation with the Romans
and symphatized with the
Zealots, the underground movement. But in
todays Gospel they joined hands with the
Herodians in order to trap Jesus.
Jesus is not the type to flee from such
entrapment. When they asked Him, Is it
against the law to pay taxes to Caesar or
not? Jesus knew that, if He favored paying
taxes to Rome, He would be accused by the
Pharisees of being a traitor to His people. If
He did not , He would be accused of inciting
rebellion against Rome by the Herodians.
So He asked them to show Him a coin
which they used to pay their taxes. And
when they did, Jesus asked them, Whose
head and name are on the coin? When
they answered, Caesars, Jesus replied,
So give to Caesar what is Caesars and to
God, what is Gods. What a smart reply
from Someone who is never defeated in the
war of words.
Jesus answer showed His respect
for the competency of Kings and secular
leaders. However, He wanted to
A Smart Reply!
remind them that what belongs to God
human dignity, freedom of conscience and
demands of justice - should not be violated
by any king or leader, indirectly address
this to the Pharisees and Herodians who
had no qualms in suppressing the dignity
especially of the poor just to pursue their
political interests. Was their conscience not
disturbed by Jesus smart reply?
In our present realities, we are very
much aware of how the Church gets involved
against plans and actions that violate
human dignity. Remember what our Church
leaders did and how they made sacrifices so
that the RH Bill would not become a Law?
How then should we, in the Year of the
Laity, support our Church leaders in their
dealing with the political leaders who may
be giving to Caesar what belongs to God?

ANG SAKRAMENTO SANG BUNYAG
ANG UNA NGA BUNGA SANG BUNYAG
Holy Missionaries
for the Divine Mission!
Fr. Nathaniel G. Gentizon
THE PASTOR SPEAKS
Msgr. Higinio C. Velarde
W
hat do you think God would like
to teach us as we celebrate World
Mission Sunday?
I believe that more than being reminded
that we share in the divine mission of Christ
as baptized Catholic Christians, we are
invited to reflect deeper and find out what
should precede our missionary activities.
Oftentimes, we have the tendency
to give more importance to our ministry,
to what we are doing, have done,
accomplished and carried out. Some of us
may even equate our worth to what we
have achieved. We pity ourselves when we
do not become productive as we should be.
We put more emphasis on MISSION.
While giving value and importance to
what we are doing is good, may we not lose
sight also of one thing which is as essential
as our doing, if not more important and
valuable.
What I am saying here is the spirit in
which our mission must be grounded. And
this is the SPIRIT OF HOLINESS.
Doing our mission is praiseworthy.
However, when the one doing the mission
lacks holiness, mission may like be an
empty gong and a clanging cymbal.
To carry out our mission in the spirit
of holiness means that we recognize the
source of our mission God. Holiness is
striving to be faithful in our relationship
with Him Who made us sharers in this
mission of spreading His reign among us. It
is difficult to be holy when we dont remain
in Gods love in prayer. Rootedness in God
must precede all our missionary endeavors.
Without prayer, without holiness, we can
not be pastorally fruitful and effective.
In other words, we dont just need
catechists. We dont just need MKK
Organizers. We dont just need parish
staff and personnel. What we need are
holy catechists. Holy MKK Organizers.
Holy parish staff and personnel. More
importantly, what we essentially need are
HOLY PRIESTS so that renewal may truly
take place in our Church and society.
We may ask, why is it that despite
the fact that we have already done a lot of
things in doing our mission, our realities
seem to be the same? Doing our mission is
not just enough. We must do it in the spirit
of holiness, in the spirit of faithfulness
to God who constantly calls us to be His
missionary disciples.
A
kon sugoran sa sini nga isyu ang pag-
isa-isa sa pito ka mga sakramento,
kag akon unahon ang Sakramento
sang Bunyag.
Isa sang mga butang nga dapat
kambiohan naton sa aton panan-aw sa
Sakramento sang Bunyag amo nga ini
nga Sakramento indi isa lang ka okasyon
sosyal para sa pamilya. Daw kanami man
Indi katingalahan
nga sa masunson may confusion sa tunga
sang baptismal certificate kag birth
certificate.
Isa sang mga indi maayo nga bunga sini
nga panan-aw sa Bunyag amo nga ang mga
nabunyagan wala gid sing kahigayunan
nga magtubo sa Pagtuo. Nagadaku sila
nga ginatawag nominal Catholics, ukon
Katoliko sa ngalan lang, kag indi sa buhat
kag sa kabuhi.
Gani, dapat gid tun-an sang tanan: mga
ginikanan, mga katekistas, mga maninoy
kag maninay, kag tanan nga natungdan, ang
matuod-tuod nga kahulogan kag katuyoan
sang Bunyag kag amat-amat nga kuhaon sa
aton kultura ang panan-aw sa Bunyag bilang
bahin lang sang aton sosyal kag politikal
nga kabuhi. Ano gid bala ang Sakramento
sang Bunyag kag ano ang katuyoan sini?
Ang una nga bunga sang Bunyag amo
ang pagpahiusa sa ginabunyagan sa kay
Kristo, ang nabanhaw nga Ginuo. Ang
bunyag nagakahulogan sang isa ka bag-o
nga kabuhi kay Kristo, dira sa pagpakig-
ambit sa Iya pagkamatay kag pagkabanhaw
kag ini nagalakip sang pagpatawad sang
sala nga panublion kag sang sala nga
personal, paagi sa makatilinlo nga gahum
sang tubig kag sang Espiritu.
Madamo sing larawan sa Santos nga
Kasulatan nga nagapakita sang kahulogan
sang Bunyag. Sa Libro sang Genesis,
ginapakita ang pagtuga sang Dios sa
kalibutan sa diin ang Iya Espiritu nagalutaw
sa ibabaw sang tubig. Kag sa Genesis, 1:3,
Ang Dios nagsiling, Matuga ang kapawa!
Sa bisperas sang Paskwa sang Pagkabanhaw,
ginaselebrar sang Simbahan si Kristo, ang
Kapawa, kag ang Sirio Paskwal amo ang
simbolo sini. Ang Bunyag ginatawag nga
Pagpasanag tungod kay ang nabunyagan
nagabaton kay Kristo, ang Kapawa sang
kalibutan.
sang grasya.
Sa Libro sang Exodo, ginasugid ang
paghilway sa mga Israelita gikan sa pagka-
ulipon sang mga taga-Egipto, paagi sa
tubig sang Mapula nga Dagat. Amo ini ang
simbolo sang paghilway sa binunyagan
gikan sa pagka-ulipon sang sala paagi sa
tubig sang bunyag.
Si Propeta Isaias nagahambal
nahanungod sa nagapadayon nga
paghigugma sang Balaan sang Israel,
nga indi na gid magtugot nga mag-anaw
liwat sa kalibutan, pareho sang natabo
sang panahon ni Noe (Is. 54:5,9). Si San

Church Law implies that the Parish Kombento
is seen both as a symbol and a fact of the
extraordinary presence of the parish priest and
his assistant priests in the parish. And yet we
know for a fact also, that this is not just where
the priests reside or where their presence is felt
and can be readily looked for when we need
them.
When we looked into our experiences in the old
convent, we were in a way asking what it meant
for us, and perhaps, how it has affected our lives
today. And this is what we found out:
More than just a residence for priests our
kombento was the center of our continuing
education in the faith and spiritual formation as
parishioners. It was a venue for meetings and
get-togethers of the religious organizations and
ministries of the parish. It was the center where
our remembrances are kept, where records and
files from our most distant ancestors down to
the present day were secured. It was also the
place where every Candle Light was born in all
these 22 years; where our school and barangay
catechists prepared and were prepared; where
parish pastoral workers were assembled and
recharged for their volunteer work in our
barangays and MKKs; where indigents get a little
hope; where the sick who could not afford were
cared for free; where the burdened sought
counsel; where our parish scholars saw a
brighter future; where married love was
deepened; where the young got their first
experience of belonging to a greater family - the
parish; wheremmany vocations to the
priesthood and the religious life were born and
nourished.
We were all part of that kombento!
The place may not have much in terms of
conveniences and rich furnishings but I am sure
that it has enriched us deeply in so many ways.
We have done our best to repair what we could,
to suffer what we could, so that it could still serve
us a little longer, and still a little longer each time.
But as Engineer Nilo Jardeleza told us in one
meeting, Father, I am sorry to tell you that the
Jaro convent is no longer standing on sturdy
pillars or hanging on tough beams. It is standing
and hanging on faith alone and it is a miracle
that it has not yet collapsed.
So there it is. Now, it has to go.
And this is where we all come in.

This is just one of the many ways we can raise funds for our Parochial House. One
does not need to feel tied up by this scheme. Generosity is a response of the heart and
when we allow our hearts to speak, the gift is always great, regardless of the amount, for
this comes from the heart.

Rev. Fr. Joenick S. Territorio,
Archdiocesan Director of the
Commission on Laity and Canon
Law Professor at St. Joseph Regional
Seminary, was resource speaker
during the assembly. He expounded
on the theme Our Blessed Mother
Mary and the Laity in Living and
Witnessing the Faith.
He explicitly explained the
important role of women in the
attainment of the fullness of time.
According to him, the Blessed
Mother lived and exemplified the
fullness of time even before the time
of her conception until the time
of her glorious assumption into
Heaven. Her perpetual intercession
can really be felt and experienced
by the devout faithful. The fullness
of time is living and witnessing the
presence of God in our midst, in our
family, in our community and in the
whole world.
Fr. Territorio also shared the
wisdom of his readings, reflections
and insights about the mystery,
dignity and beauty of a woman
in Gods plan of procreation. He
stated that Mother Mary represents
humanity and in her Fiat, she
received the Fathers gift, the All-
Grace, Who is Jesus. He exhorted the
members to stand firm in living and
witnessing their faith by following
the example of the Blessed Virgin
Mary, in loving imitation of her
virtues of obedience, humility,
charity and faithfulness.
With his message, we were
reawakened and renewed in our
search for the true meaning of our
Catholic Faith. We were inspired
to aspire for excellence and
perfection in the realization of the
real meaning and purpose of our
life as Christians, as Daughters of
Mary Immaculate.
Our grateful thanks to Fr.
Territorio for his most enlightening
and meaningful message. As
a token of gratitude, Sis Perla
Arguelles and Sis Emma Victoria
presented him with a certificate
and token gift.
Fr. Ronald C. De Leon, Parochial
Vicar of the National Shrine of
Our Lady of Candles and Spiritual
Director of DMII-OLCC gave the
assembly a very meaningful and
generous closing remarks. He
earnestly advised us to be more
compassionate and merciful to our
brothers and sisters.
We were nourished not
only with wisdom, knowledge
and understanding through the
expertise and proficiency of our
speakers but we also were inspired
to heed to the call of the Blessed
Mother to be together in order to
pray, to sing, to learn, to eat and to
elect our new sets of officers of the
Diocesan Board.
Our gratitude to all the
present and past representatives
and regents and to all participants,
who in one way or another helped
in making the Diocesan Assembly
a great success.
Thank you Blessed Mother! To
God be the glory.

tawohanon nga tagipusuon.
Kag si San Pablo, sa iya sulat
sa mga taga-Roma, nagasiling,
Upod sa Iya ginlubong kita,
paagi sa bunyag sa kamatayon,
agud nga subong nga si Kristo
ginbanhaw halin sa mga minatay
paagi sa himaya sang Iya Amay,
kita man makaagum sang bag-o
nga kabuhi.
Ining mga imahen sang tubig
kag Espiritu nga ginkuha sa Santos
nga Kasulatan dapat magpadalum
sang aton paghangup sang
matuod nga kahulogan sang
Sakramento sang Bunyag, Ang
Simbahan, sa Rito sang Bunyag
nagapaathag: Kon ang isa ka
tawo ginabunyagan, nagapakig-
ambit sia sa kamatayon ni Kristo
sa isa ka paagi nga sakramental.
Ang bunyag nagadumdom kag
nagabuhi liwat sang Misteryo

sini, ang tawo nagasaylo halin sa
kamatayon sang sala pakadto sa
kabuhi.

Jesus said, Those who are deemed worthy to attain the coming age
and the resurrection of the dead neither marry nor are given in marriage.
They can no longer die for they are like angels; and they are the children of
God because they are the ones who will rise. That the dead will rise, even
Moses made known in the passage about the bush, when he called Lord the
God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob; and he is not God
of the dead, but of the living, for to him all are alive.
HH: Gracious Lord, forgive the sins of those who have died in Christ.
Lord, have mercy.
All: Lord, have mercy:
HH: Remember all the good they have done. Lord, have mercy.

For parents
Lord our God, as we remember our parents (mother/father) we
remember our human condition and the brevity of our lives on earth.
But for those who believe in your love death is not the end, nor does it
destroy the bonds that you forge in our lives. We share the faith of your
Sons disciples and the hope of the children of God. Bring to us the light of
Christs resurrection, as we pray for ___ and for those who love them (him/
her). We ask this through Christ our Lord.
All: Amen
Or for relatives, friends and benefactors:
Lord, those who die still live in your presence, and your
saints rejoice in complete happiness. Listen to our prayers for
____, your son (daughter), and give him (her) the unending joy of
your love in the company of all your saints. We ask this through
Christ our Lord.
All: Amen
HH: Eternal rest grant unto him (her), O Lord.
All: And let perpetual light shine upon him (her).
HH: May he (she) rest in peace.

All: Amen.
HH: May his (her) soul and the souls of the faithful departed

Pureza D. Lacuesta
Need for Christian Solidarity
T
hese days, our newspapers, TV
screens, and radio broadcast are
filled with news items about murders,
hold-ups, dishonesty, drug addiction, rape
and many more.
Sometimes, we blame hard times to
lack of money, lack of food, substandard
living conditions and many more, which
lead to character traits that are sometimes
intolerable.
These are the times that try mens
souls, is a line from Henry Wadsworth
Longfellows poem which is very applicable
during these times.
The Philippines is not the only country
affected by the negative turn of events.
Many nations in the Orient are suffering
from negative values which cause burdens
too heavy to carry.
This is the time to raise our eyes, our
hands, and our hearts to God the Father,
and plead for His mercy. He is only waiting
for our sincerity and our constancy in
prayers. Let us not wait for hard times
in order to pray. We must make prayer a
preference do it upon waking up do it
while working do it before we go to sleep.
We must make prayer our most important
activity. We must try to convince our family
and friends to do the same.
In 1979, Bishop Jose Sorra of
Catanduanes was asked by the Pope to start
the value formation program here in the
Philippines. He wrote a manual on value
formation where he illustrated Jesus as
the fisher of men. The cover of the manual
projected Jesus riding on a boat in deep
waters, bringing a fishing rod and using it
to catch men who were falling into the sea.
He explained the meaning to us and told us
to give value formation seminars when we
reach home.
When I returned, Mr. Lacuesta and
I tried our best to implement the new
apostolate. Our first work was in Camp
Delgado under General Rio, and on to
his successor, General Zulueta under the
guidance of Fr. Calixto Enojo. We were
also air-lifted to Bacolod once and then and
continued the seminar here every Saturday
because both of us were employed. They
also had it at De Paul College in Jaro then
at the Police Headquarters under Colonel
Charles Mondejar. I gave it to our pupils
in Pototan Pilot Elementary School with
the permission of the District Supervisor,
Mr. Vicente Luntao, until the time of my
retirement from the teaching service.
Today in my old age, I give a seminar to
the Sacred Heart School of Pavia. As long as
I still have some energy left, I will share to
our brothers and sisters what they need to
learn from me. Although I have attended
many seminars, I cannot retain as much as
what I have learned from the two seminars:
Value Formation Seminar 1979 and The
Catechetics of the Holy Shroud 1980,
which become my basis in facilitating these
seminars.
We need to be strong in our faith, we
need to be brave, we need to live with God,
work with God, unite with our brothers in
the arms of God.
Youth Cross Pilgrimage
Cecil P. Nieves
A
ng Jaro Parish Youth Ministry
ukon JPYM naghiwat sang isa
ka pilgrimage sang nagligad nga
Oktubre 11-17. Ini tuigan nga hilikuton
bilang preparasyon sa palaabuton nga
ika-23 nga anibersaryo. Sa amon paglibot
sa mga nagakalain-lain nga barangay nga
sakop sang Parokya sang Jaro, gindala
namon ang Jaro Youth Cross. Sa amon
pagtililipon, nagpamalandong kami
sang Pulong sang Dios kag nagtuon
sa pagpasangkad sang amon ihibalo
nahanungod sa Kristohanon nga
pagtuluohan.
Sang nagligad nga Oktubre 11, ginhiwat
ang nahauna nga adlaw sang pilgrimage sa
Brgy. San Vicente Chapel. Sa sina nga adlaw,
sang wala pa magsugod ang pilgrimage
nagaulan. Gani nagkabalaka ang tanan
basi indi madayon ang paglakat. Sa baylo
nga magkabalaka, nangamuyo kami para
sa maayo nga panahon. Ginsabat sang
Ginoo ang amon pangamuyo kay wala man
nagpadayon ang pag-ulan. Nadayon ang
pilgrimage! Daku gid ang amon kalipay!
Bag-o kami maghalin sa Katedral,
nag-amba kami sang Birhen sang
Candelaria. Dayon nagprusisyon kami
nga nagapangadi sang Santo Rosario, dala
ang Jaro Youth Cross. Pag-abot namon sa
barangay San Vicente, kami gin-abi-abi
sang mga pamantan-on didto. Daku man
ang ila kalipay kay sa sini nga okasyon, ila
nabatyagan ang espiritu sang pagbuligay,
pag-isa, pagsakripisyo kag paghangop
sang Pulong sang Dios nga makabulig sa
ila pangabuhi espirituhanon.
Sa diri nga pagtililipon, nagtu-on
kami sang mga ambahanon kag bag-o nga
animation sa pagpadungog kay Birhen
Maria sa sining bulan sang Oktubre, ang
bulan sang Santo Rosaryo. May ara man
nga katesismo nahanungod sa palaabuton
nga pagbisita sang Santo Papa sa madason
nga tuig. Amon man gintun-an ang Pito
ka Corporal kag Spiritual Works of Mercy.
Pagkatapos sang programa, nag pamahaw
ang tanan.
Ini nga hilikuton ginahimo gab-i gab-i
sa lain-lain nga barangay para mabuyok ang
mga pamatan-on sa pagpalapit sa Ginoo
kag mapahilayo sa mga malain nga buhat.
Ini tanan ginahalad sa Ginoo sa pihak sang
mga kabudlayan nga maaguman.
Kada pag-abot namon sa mga
nagkalain-lain nga barangay, makita
kag mabatyagan ang matuod-tuod nga
pagsuporta kag pagpalangga sa mga
pamatan-on.
Madamo gid nga salamat sa tanan nga
bulig sang amon mga ginikanan, kag sa
tanan nga nagpatigayon sang pamahaw.
