The metacentric height is an essential factor when assessing the stability of a ship in waves. The position of the metacentre is not governed by the position of the centre of gravity. It merely depends on the shaped of the portion of the body under water and the displacement. This experiment will describes methods of determining the position The center of gravity is laterally shifted by certain constant distance x s using an additional weight, thus causing heeling to occur. Further vertical shifting of the centre of gravity alters the heel. A stability gradient formed from the derivation dxs is then defined. The stability gradient decreasesas the vertical centre of gravity position approaches the metacentre. If centre of gravity position and metacentre coincide, the stability gradient is equal to zero and the system is metastable. The horizontal position is referenced to the centre line; x s = = 0.055. x The vertical position is referenced to the underside of the floating body: z s = (m v z + m + m h ) *z g = 5.364 + 0.156z m+m v +m h Stability gradient : = The problem is most easily solved using agraph . The vertical centre of gavity position is plotted versus the stability gradient. A curve is drawn through the measurement points and extended as far as the vertical axis dx. The point of intersection with the vertical axis then gives the position of the metacentre. Move vertical sliding weight to bottom position. 3. Fill tank provided with water and insert floating body. 4. Gradually raise vertical sliding weight and read off angle on heel indicator and height of sliding weight at top edge of weight. DATA COLLECTION Read off angle on heel indicator and sliding weight at top edge of weight and enter in table together with angle. Position of horizontal sliding weight x= 8 cm Height of vertical sliding weight, z 3cm 6 cm 9 cm Angle ANALYSIS AND DATA CALCULATION 1. Calculate the centre of gravity position and stability gradient. 2. Plot them on a graph , z s versus . The graphical solution yields a metacentre position.
