LESSON PLAN

Grade: 3 / Age: 8-9


Lesson aim:
By the end of the lesson students will be able to ask and
answer questions about leisure activities being done at the
moment in the context of a role play about a picnic in a park.
1. Presentation
A. Revision:
- Simple TPR activity to review vocabulary items on
leisure time activities (skip rope, read, play badminton,
play hide and seek, )
- T > whole class
- T mimes the actions Ss guess what the action is and
shout out the answers.
B. Presentation:
- T introduces the lesson and tells children they are going
on a picnic today.
- Asks them what activities they often do at a picnic
- Tell Ss some common activities they can do at a picnic
(skip rope, read, play badminton, play hide and seek,
play football, cook, roller-skate,)
- T introduces the context of the conversation and the
characters by pointing at the picture and using the
puppets & gestures. (Mom, Nam, Lan, Hung)
T : Where are they?
Ss: At the park.
T: Good! They are on a picnic at a park.
T: Look at mom. Is she busy? Can she see Hung? / Can
she see Lan?
Ss: NOOOO!
T: Good, Mom cant see Hung. Mom cant see Lan. So
she asks Nam. Listen to them.
T (Mom): Wheres Hung? Whats he doing?
Nam : Hes over there. Hes playing hide and seek.
Mom: Whats Lan doing?
Nam: Shes skipping.
- T conducts drilling of the conversation:
T > whole class (I am Mom. Can I see Hung? No, so
what do I ask Nam) - then change the role
Team drill: Team A asks team B. Team B asks Team A.
- T checks Ss understanding of the meaning & use of the
structure. (T may use L1)

Ss: Whats Hung doing?

Ss: Hes playing hide and seek.

Ss: Whats Lan doing?
T: Nam tr li th no cc con?
Ss: Shes skipping.
T: Khi cc con khng thy ai v mun bit ngi

Ss: Whats he/she doing?
T: v khi ai hi con cu con s tr li nh th no? (T
can mime the actions to elicit the answers from Ss)
Ss: He/Shes reading/ skipping / playing hide and seek
2. Deliberate practice (Meaning/ Form)
a. Substitution drill:
- T> whole class: T asks Q about other people in the pic.
Ss answer. (T can prepare the puppets + labels of the
names of the characters in the picture)
E.g. T: Whats Minh doing?
Ss: Hes playing football?
- Ss Ss: Group 1 asks group 2. Group 2 asks group 1.
- Pairwork
b. Further practice (Repeated substitution drill + miming)
- Groupwork (preferably groups of five or six)
Student 1 is mom. Student 2 mimes the action of
his/her choice. The others are Nam. (then they change
the roles)
3. Communication: (Info gap + drawing)
- Ss draw a pic of their mom or dad doing sth at the
moment of speaking.
- Ss work in pairs, doing a info-gap activity.
e.g.
St A: Is that your mom? (pointing at the back of St As
pic)
St B: Yes.
St A: What is she doing?
St B: Shes cooking. (showing the pic to St A)
Then they change the roles.
4. Noticing forms: Worksheet delivery
Ss work individually. Each student is given a worksheet
with another picture of a park where people are doing
different free time activities.
Ss have to complete a paragraph describing the scene
with 6 gaps.
E.g.
It is a nice Sunday morning. Everyone is at the park. Dad
is reading. Mom ________________. Tom
___________________.
.
[Possible activity: chanting of the dialogue in the
presentation. ]
