Lesson aim: By the end of the lesson students will be able to ask and answer questions about leisure activities being done at the moment in the context of a role play about a picnic in a park. 1. Presentation A. Revision: - Simple TPR activity to review vocabulary items on leisure time activities (skip rope, read, play badminton, play hide and seek, ) - T > whole class - T mimes the actions Ss guess what the action is and shout out the answers. B. Presentation: - T introduces the lesson and tells children they are going on a picnic today. - Asks them what activities they often do at a picnic - Tell Ss some common activities they can do at a picnic (skip rope, read, play badminton, play hide and seek, play football, cook, roller-skate,) - T introduces the context of the conversation and the characters by pointing at the picture and using the puppets & gestures. (Mom, Nam, Lan, Hung) T : Where are they? Ss: At the park. T: Good! They are on a picnic at a park. T: Look at mom. Is she busy? Can she see Hung? / Can she see Lan? Ss: NOOOO! T: Good, Mom cant see Hung. Mom cant see Lan. So she asks Nam. Listen to them. T (Mom): Wheres Hung? Whats he doing? Nam : Hes over there. Hes playing hide and seek. Mom: Whats Lan doing? Nam: Shes skipping. - T conducts drilling of the conversation: T > whole class (I am Mom. Can I see Hung? No, so what do I ask Nam) - then change the role Team drill: Team A asks team B. Team B asks Team A. - T checks Ss understanding of the meaning & use of the structure. (T may use L1) T: M Nam c thy bn Hng v bn Lan ang lm g ko? Ss: D hok! T: Vy nu m mun bit Hng ang lm g th m hi cu g no? What. Ss: Whats Hung doing? T: Nam tr li th no cc con? Ss: Hes playing hide and seek. T: Th khi m mun bit Lan ang lm g th m hi cu g ?... T: v khi ai hi con cu con s tr li nh th no? (T can mime the actions to elicit the answers from Ss) Ss: He/Shes reading/ skipping / playing hide and seek 2. Deliberate practice (Meaning/ Form) a. Substitution drill: - T> whole class: T asks Q about other people in the pic. Ss answer. (T can prepare the puppets + labels of the names of the characters in the picture) E.g. T: Whats Minh doing? Ss: Hes playing football? - Ss Ss: Group 1 asks group 2. Group 2 asks group 1. - Pairwork b. Further practice (Repeated substitution drill + miming) - Groupwork (preferably groups of five or six) Student 1 is mom. Student 2 mimes the action of his/her choice. The others are Nam. (then they change the roles) 3. Communication: (Info gap + drawing) - Ss draw a pic of their mom or dad doing sth at the moment of speaking. - Ss work in pairs, doing a info-gap activity. e.g. St A: Is that your mom? (pointing at the back of St As pic) St B: Yes. St A: What is she doing? St B: Shes cooking. (showing the pic to St A) Then they change the roles. 4. Noticing forms: Worksheet delivery Ss work individually. Each student is given a worksheet with another picture of a park where people are doing different free time activities. Ss have to complete a paragraph describing the scene with 6 gaps. E.g. It is a nice Sunday morning. Everyone is at the park. Dad is reading. Mom ________________. Tom ___________________. .
