Hebrew Bible / Old Testament

Method, and Practice
edited by Izaak de Hulster
and Brent A. Strawn
This volume is organized around the
tripartite structure of the Hebrew Bible, and
demonstrates that iconographical exegesis is
pertinent to every nook and crannyof the
Bible. Within the three parts, there is special
emphasis on Genesis, Isaiah, and the Psalms in order to make the book
attractive for classes that deal with one or more of these books and might
therefore include an iconographic perspective.

Exodus 115
by Helmut Utzschneider
and Wolfgang Oswald
This commentary interprets the frst
part of the book of Exodus through two
approaches: synchronically, by means
of form criticism and modern literary
methods, and diachronically, reconstructing
the predecessors of the fnal form, from
its origins in an Exodus composition that
opposes political domination to the fnal
form as a dramatic narrative about the transfer of sovereignty from the
Pharaoh to the God of Israel. Concluding syntheses examine the relationship
between these two interpretive approaches.

Volume III: From Modernism to Post-Modernism
Part 1: The Nineteenth Century
Due to an increased historical knowledge in the 19th century in many felds and an expanding
cultural context, the phenomenon of history became the object of an as yet unsurpassed
fascination; history was the new key concept partly in form of a historicism. With regard
to biblical studies in general and the interpretation of the Hebrew Bible / Old Testament in
particular a decisive historical-critical approach came into focus, which generated tension
between this new method and the traditional scriptural interpretation of the Church.

Religious Competition
in the Third Century CE
Jews, Christians,
and the Greco-Roman World
edited by Jordan D. Rosenblum,
Lily C. Vuong and
Nathaniel P. DesRosiers
The essays in this work examine issues
related to authority, identity, or change in
religious and philosophical traditions of the
third century CE. This century is of particular
interest because of the political and cultural developments and conficts that
occurred during this period, which in turn drastically changed the social and
religious landscape of the Roman world. The specifc focus of this volume is
to explore these major creative movements and to examine their strategies
for developing and designating orthodoxies and orthopraxies. Contributors
were encouraged to analyze or construct the intersections between parallel
religious and philosophical communities of the third century, including
points of contact either between or among Jews, Christians, pagans, and
philosophers. As a result, the discussions of the material contained within
this volume are both comparative in nature and interdisciplinary in ap-
proach, engaging participants who work in the felds of Religious Studies,
Philosophy, History, and Archaeology. The overall goal was to explore dia-
logues between individuals or groups that illuminate the mutual competi-
tion and infuence that was extant among them, and to put forth a general
methodological framework for the study of these ancient dialogues.

The Courtier and the Governor
Transformations of Genre
in the Nehemiah Memoir
by Sean Burt
The Nehemiah Memoir, the narrative of the
royal cupbearer sent to rebuild Jerusalem,
is central to Ezra-Nehemiahs account of
Persian Judah. Yet its emphasis on one
individuals eforts makes it a text that ill-fts
the books story of a communal restoration.
Sean Burt analyzes the nature of this curious
text through the lens of genre criticism and identifes the impact of its use of
genres on its early reception in Ezra-Nehemiah. Drawing upon contemporary
theorists of literary genre, within the feld of biblical studies and beyond, he
builds an understanding of genre capable of addressing both its fexibility
and its necessarily historical horizon.

At the Intersection of Texts
and Material Finds
Stepped Pools, Stone Vessels,
and Ritual Purity among the Jews
of Roman Galilee
by Stuart S. Miller
Stuart Miller examines the hermeneutical
challenges posed by the material and literary
evidence pertaining to ritual purity practices
in Graeco-Roman Palestine and, especially,
the Galilee. He contends that stepped pools,
which we now know were in use well beyond the Destruction of the Temple
and into the Middle and Late Roman/Byzantine eras, must be understood in
light of biblical and popular perspectives on ritual purity. The interpretation of
the fnds is too frequently forced to conform to rabbinic prescriptions, which
often were the result of the sages unique and creative, nominalist approach
to ritual purity. Special attention is given to the role ritual purity continued to
play in the lives of ordinary Jews despite (or because of) the loss of the Temple.
Miller argues against the prevailing tendency to type material fnds according
to known groups, counters the perception that ritual purity practices were
largely the interest of priests, and argues against the recent suggestion that
the kohanim resurfaced as an infuential group in Late Antiquity.

The Portrayals of the Pharisees
in the Gospels and Acts
by Mary Marshall
The frst fve books of the New Testament
contain a large proportion of all uses of the
term Farisai/oj in extant literature. Mary
Marshall sets aside the quest for the histori-
cal Pharisees and instead ofers an analysis
of the portrayal of the Pharisees by each
evangelist. She adopts a redaction critical
approach which incorporates narrative criti-
cal observations where appropriate. Her examination of the texts demon-
strates the particularity of each book and its portrayal of the Pharisees.

Untersuchungen zur Textgenese
und zur relativ-chronologischen
Einordnung von Gen 13
by Walter Bhrer
Walter Bhrer investigates the methodologi-
cal presuppositions for a relative-dating of
Old Testament texts. With Gen 13 as a
test case, he works with one of the most
important texts in classical pentateuchal
scholarship. Recent European scholarship
tends more and more to post-date the non-priestly Eden narrative through
comparison with priestly, deuteronomic-deuteronomistic and late wisdom
texts. Bhrer, however, argues for a pre-priestly date of Gen 23 due to the
lack of clear textual references to priestly texts. German text.

Philo von Alexandrien
Denkender Glaube Eine Einfhrung
by Otto Kaiser
Philo of Alexandria occupies a key position in
the Hellenistic intellectual history, because
he was the frst mid-Platonic thinker whose
writings have been preserved for the most
part. His writings are also an indispensable
source for the Hellenistic and Stoic philosophy,
whose works have not survived. Philos theol-
ogy historical signifcance is based on the fact
that he has been the frst who referred in his interpretations of the Pentateuch
to the writings of the Greek philosophers and the current views of the empirical
sciences in his time. Otto Kaiser introduces Philos life, work and thought by
referring to his traditional writings and those of others. German text.

The Testaments of the Twelve Patriarchs

Bruin examines these twelve monologues

Cult and Cosmos
Tilting toward a Temple-
Centered Theology
edited by L. Michael Morales
The association between creation and temple
is a key element of the cultural context of the
Hebrew Bible, and foundational for under-
standing its cultic theology. Situated within
the common cultic ideology of the ancient
Near East, Israels temple on the mountain of
God was considered the central axis and navel
of creation, its architecture, furnishings, and rituals pervaded by cosmogonic
symbolism. This volume, republishing pivotal scholarship on the interface of
cult and cosmos, forms a primer on this signifcant area of study, tracing major
voices in the conversation, from archaeological and ancient Near Eastern stud-
ies to biblical studies and the theological prospect of Israels cultus.

Old Testament Pseudepigrapha
and the Scriptures
edited by Eibert Tigchelaar
This volume contains the papers of the
Colloquium Biblicum Lovaniense 2012,
which focused on a series of contemporary
questions in Pseudepigrapha research.
The papers discuss the relationship of Old
Testament Pseudepigrapha to scriptures,
both in a technical sense (how did authors
rewrite or interpret Scripture) and in a
literary sense (how and why did authors expand or extend earlier scriptures).
Many papers cover the phenomenon of pseudepigraphy, giving explanations
ranging from pious forgery through various kinds of literary devices to
authorial self-efacement. Some contributions discuss the historically
fuid boundaries between canonical and pseudepigraphic texts, and the
production and use of Old Testament pseudepigrapha in early Christianity.

The Political Theology of Village Scribes in the Sayings Gospel Q
by G.B. Bazzana
The Sayings Gospel Q was composed in the central decades of the frst century
CE by Galilean villagers who had acquired knowledge of Greek mostly through
their involvement with the public administration. This book analyzes the text
of Q in order to rediscover the terminological and ideological traces of the
activity of these sub-elite scribes in the Sayings Gospel. The peculiar use of
the phrase Basileia tou theou carries a specifc signifcance for its theological
political implications.

From Flow to Face
The Haemorrhoissa Motif (Mark 5:24b34parr)
between Anthropological Origin and Image
Paradigm
by E. Sidgwick
The Haemorrhoissa motif had an important place in early
Christianity, and from its earliest manifestation as synoptic
narrative it developed into a multifarious motif embedded
in a variety of contexts. One of its most remarkable
developments was its transformation into the Veronica
motif, the roots of which thus lie in early Christianity.

Marcion and the Dating
of the Synoptic Gospels
by Markus Vinzent
Art and archaeology cannot provide the
material basis to secure the irrefutable inner
continuity of the Christian beginnings (Erich
Dinkler); can the Synoptic Gospels step in?
Their narratives, however, are as absent from
the frst hundred and ffty years of early
Christianity as are their visual imageries. This
volume is the frst systematic study of all
available early evidence on the frst witness to our Gospel narratives, Marcion
of Sinope. It evaluates our commonly known arguments for dating the Syn-
optic Gospels, elaborates on Marcions crucial role in the Gospel making and
argues for a re-dating of the Gospels to the years between 138 and 144 AD.

by Al Wolters
The contribution of this commentary
to the understanding of the book of
Zechariah is mainly in four areas. The frst
is close attention to philological detail,
with a special focus on textual criticism,
lexical semantics, and literary wordplay. A
second area of interest is in the history of
interpretation of the book, and takes into
account a wide range of exegetical material,
from rabbinic and patristic times to the present. A third area of interest
is in intertextuality. Finally, the commentary has an interest in Christian
theological interpretation.

Biblical Hermeneutics as Conversation
edited by R. Bieringer, R. Burggraeve,

This volume is unique in presenting biblical
hermeneutics in action. It brings together
contributions that can be grouped into three
parts. The frst part refects on the relevance
of a meaningful biblical hermeneutics in order
to adequately (re-)engage the Bible today.
The second part delves into specifc biblical
texts in search of their deeper philosophical and theological insights. The
third and fnal part ofers specialized hermeneutical refections on how the
Bible has been, and can be, engaged in diferent contexts. Viewed as a whole,
the contributions contained in this volume resonate with a view of biblical
hermeneutics as an ongoing and dialogical process and demonstrate that the

Proverbs 19
by J.A. Loader
Written within the historical-critical paradigm, this commentary on Proverbs
19 ventures to overcome the bifurcation of historicaland literary
perspectives in biblical interpretation. Avoiding novel propositions about
composition as well as claims for alternative reading strategies, it strives
to take the text seriously at the philological, structural and compositional
levels in order to indicate the books amplitude and potential. This is done
in dialogue with recent and traditional Jewish and Christian readings. The
self-description of Wisdom, which has had a hugely eventful reception in the
history of Christian doctrine, is particularly striking in this respect.

Re-thinking the Death of Jesus
An Exegetical and Theological Study
of Hilasmos and Agape in 1 John 2:12
and 4:710
by Toan Do
This volume looks carefully at the peculiar
Johannine usage of the noun hilasmos in 1
John 2:2 and 4:10. Outside of 1 John, hilasmos
is not used elsewhere in the NT. Moreover,
other issues in and around the immediate
contexts of the hilasmos-concept in 1 John
have not been the subject of thorough discussion among NT scholars. To shed
some light onto this facet of the Johannine literature, this study provides an

Divine/Human Relational Dialogue in Genesis
by E.B. Tracy
This thesis examines relational dialogue between the
Deity and human individuals in Genesis by separating
the conversations from narrative through lines that
most often inform biblical analysis. It is interested in
snapshots of character developed in intimate conversa-
tions, when face to face dialogue is allowed to take
center stage. These conversations challenge our opin-
ion of a distant Deity and push the reader to redefne
their understanding of the Divine/Human relationship.

Three Versions of Esther
Their Relationship to Anti-Semitic

In spite of the fact that Hebrew Esther gives
an account of a womans leading role in the

Persia, and the fact that the authors of the
Greek versions reinterpreted the Hebrew
for the purpose of addressing anti-Semitic
sentiment in the Greco-Roman world, the
story of Esther is the object of signifcant anti-Semitic and feminist critique.
This work uses a combination of critical methods to question both forms
of critique, and contrasts Hebrew Esthers character and actions with her
character and actions portrayed in the two Greek versions.

from the 5th to the 18th century and with a majority of them being earlier
than the 10th century, the manuscripts present us with major authors and
works of the Syriac literary tradition. They include biblical texts (among
them the earliest dated Gospel manuscript in any language), original Syriac

(gr, engl. immigrant) in the book of
Deuteronomy (D). He argues that a precise
reconstruction of the historical referents of
Ds gr is impossible and has led scholars to
misread or overlook literary, theological, and
sociological determinants. By analyzing Ds gr texts and contexts, evidence
emerges for the non-Israelite and non-Judahite origins of Ds gr.

The Gospel of the Lots of Mary
by AnneMarie Luijendijk
This volume presents for the frst time a new
early Christian divinatory text, preserved
in a ffth-or sixth-century Coptic miniature

Mary, and places it within the context of
practices of and debates about divination in

The Tragic in Mark
A Literary-Historical Interpretation
by Je Jay
This volume demonstrates that in the earliest
years of Christian literary activity, Mark
produced a narrative that is tragic, for it
strongly elicits several of tragedys recur-
ring motifs and moods, as well as a highly
theatrical atmosphere and a poignant sense
of inexorability that drives Jesus onwards
to the fateful passion. Theorists who frame
the history of tragedy in overly restrictive, even at times reductive, ways thus
minimize tragedys actual impact throughout the centuries and overlook its in-
fuence over several early Jewish writers and the author of the Gospel of Mark.

From Synagogue to Ecclesia
Matthews Community at the Crossroads
by Charles E. Carlston and Craig A. Evans
This volume examines in detail fve major motifs in the theology of Matthew: Christology, Law, Church, Scripture and Tradition,
as well as History and Eschatology. It reveals a Jewish-Christian author who attempts to mediate the traditions of Judaism and
early Christianity in Christian churches in his area that are becoming increasingly composed of former Gentiles. Diversity then,
as now, ofers both a challenge and an opportunity. The evangelist, moreover, was faced with rejection by the synagogue and
strongly voiced skepticism with regard to the proclamation of Jesus as Israels Messiah. To encourage believers and defend the
story of Jesus, the evangelist shows how prophetic Scripture and the demands of Torah have been fulflled.

applies the diachronic or holistic approach
to the exegesis of the New Testament in this
volume. He takes up for discussion a number

of and approach to the Greek language, has not infrequently wreaked havoc
with the meaning and interpretation of its text.

Metaphor, Narrative,
and Parables in Q
edited by Dieter T. Roth, Ruben
Zimmermann and Michael Labahn
Research on Q has frequently been driven
by questions addressing the legitimacy of
the two-source hypothesis or by questions
related to the reconstruction of this source.
As such, Q scholarship has often viewed
its tasks primarily through the lenses of
source- and redaction-critical perspectives.
The authors of this volume make a conscious efort to refocus discussions
concerning Q from questions of reconstruction to narratival and metaphorical
aspects of this text. Narrative elements such as space, time, characters, plot,
etc. and metaphorical elements can be recognized and examined even apart
from a precise, verbal reconstruction of a text.

Scriptures and Sectarianism
Essays on the Dead Sea Scrolls
by John J. Collins
The Dead Sea Scrolls include many texts that were produced by a sectarian movement (and also many that were not). The
movement had its origin in disputes about the interpretation of the Scriptures, especially the Torah, not in disputes about the
priesthood as had earlier been assumed. The defnitive break with the rest of Judean society should be dated to the frst century
BCE rather than to the second. John J. Collins illustrates how the worldview of the sect involved a heightened sense of involve-
ment in the heavenly, angelic world, and the hope for an afterlife in communion with the angels. The essays in this volume are
divided into three main sections, dealing with Scripture and Interpretation, History and Sectarianism, and Sectarian Worldview.

Credible, Incredible
The Miraculous

How do ancient authors express their
attitude toward the miracles they report?
What value do they place in miraculous
accounts? How do they qualify, cast doubt
on, or deny the validity of a report? What
are the relationships between the various
literary genres and religious contexts within which miraculous stories are
told? The contribution of this volume lies in the juxtaposition of various
perspectives: Jewish, Christian and pagan authors are all brought into play.

Paul in Athens
The Popular Religious Context of Acts 17
by Clare K. Rothschild
Pauls visit to Athens, in particular the
Areopagus speech, is one of the most well-
known excerpts of early Christian literature.
It is the most signifcant speech by Paul to
a Gentile audience in Acts functioning as
a literary crest of the overall narrative. Yet
critical analyses also describe it as an ad hoc
blend of Greek and Jewish elements. In this
study, Clare K. Rothschild examines how the nexus of popular second-century
traditions crystallizing around the Cretan prophet Epimenides explains these
seemingly miscellaneous and impromptu aspects of the text.

composed in Aramaic, Hebrew, and Greek. This volume collects studies by Loren T. Stuckenbruck that explore aspects of this
infuence in some of the literature and demonstrate how the myth was reused and adapted to address new cultural and
religious contexts. In addition, Stuckenbruck analyses the degree to which it ofers a theological framework through which to
reconsider theological approaches to several New Testament texts.

Framing Social Criticism in the Jesus Movement
The Ideological Project in the Sayings Gospel Q
by Sarah E. Rollens
Although it has become increasingly popular to understand the earliest rural Jesus movement as emerging from a peasant
milieu, proponents of this model have not yet taken the time to explore the ramifcations for a highly stylized written document
being the earliest evidence for this movement. On the contrary, the Sayings Gospel Q, a sophisticated literary text having
afnities with other ancient literature and even documentary papyri, does not seem to be a product of a peasant milieu. Even so,
Q does not appear to be the product of elites either, for the text is rife with tropes of social and economic marginality. Sarah E.
Rollens looks cross-culturally at middling fgures to understand the ideological project in Q.

examining the broad structure of thought in
ancient moral philosophy, ancient athletics,

that the strong civic connotation of this term
continued to operate in the political culture

which the Christ worshippers saw themselves as the honorable citizens who

Sensitivity to Outsiders
Exploring the Dynamic Relationship between Mission and Ethics in the New Testament and Early Christianity
edited by Jacobus Kok, Tobias Nicklas, Dieter Roth and Christopher M. Hays
From its very beginning, Christianity was an innovative movement which had to construct and maintain its identity, morality,
and social as well as theological boundaries as it developed from a religion of conversion into a religion of tradition. Early
Christianitys sensitivity to outsidersevolved in various ways as circumstances and socio-cultural contexts changed. In this
volume, scholars from around the world refect on the dynamic relationship between mission and ethos in the New Testament
and Early Christianity, focusing particularly on the sensitivity, or lack thereof, to outsiders, and thereby ofering new insights into
old questions. Most of the New Testament and several second century books are individually studied.

Assessing Biblical and Classical Sources for the
Reconstruction of Persian Infuence, History and Culture
edited by Anne Fitzpatrick-McKinley
This volume brings together the views of biblical scholars, Achaemenid
historians and classicists in relation to the problems of reconstructing the

each of these disciplines have struggled with the complexity and limitations
of the ancient sources. Some of the essays in this volume discuss issues
surrounding the identifcation of authorial biases and evaluate what - if
anything - remains as possible historical evidence, while others examine the
scholarly consensus on the question of Persian policy on the religion and laws
of its subjects. What unites the essays in this volume is the commitment of
their authors to recognise the difculties with the sources and to constantly

Zeugen auf Stein und Ton
Inschriften des Heiligen Landes
und seiner Nachbarregionen
aus vier Jahrtausenden
by Karl Jaro
From the fourth century BC to the end of
Byzantine rule in 638 AD, thousands of
inscriptions were written in the Holy Land
in Egyptian, Canaanite-Phoenician, Hebraic,
Aramaic, and Greek and have survived to
today. They are primary witnesses of the
cultural, religious, political and linguistic situation of the region. The present
book presents 131 inscriptions in line drawings and ofers the possibility for
the reader to transliterate or transcribe or even, with the help of provided
clarifcations, to translate the inscriptions. German text.

Biblical Greek
Illustrated by Examples by Maximilian Zerwick S.J.
English Edition adapted from the Fourth Latin Edition by Joseph Smith
Ninth Reprint
The success which attended the Latin Graecitas Biblica from its frst (1944) to its revised and enlarged fourth edition (1960)
suggested the advisability of an English translation. The purpose of the present treatise was not so much a purely scientifc or
philological one, as that of encouraging future ministers of the Word to have recourse to the original Greek text. This accounts
for the multiplication of examples to illustrate the exegetical importance of the study of the Greek and also for the fact that
attention has been given almost exclusively to points of syntax.

Constituent Postponement in
Biblical Hebrew Verse
by John Scott Redd
What are the elements of Biblical Hebrew
(BH) verse? Much headway has been made in
terms of describing the features and devices
that fnd expression in BH verse, but there
is more to be said particularly about the
distinction between verse and prose. This
cross-disciplinary study evaluates statistical
evidence from a broad sample of BH verse,
investigates the instances of actual constituent postponement, and employs
the work of the Russian Formalist critic Victor Shklovsky on defamiliarization
to explain the function of constituent postponement in the sample texts.

1 Esdras
by Dieter Bhler
1 Esdras is an alternative version of the book
of Ezra-Nehemiah in the Septuagint. Most
Eastern Orthodox churches accord the book
canonical status, while the Vulgate and King
James Bible place it in the Apocrypha. This
commentary represents the frst commen-
tary on 1 Esdras in decades, and the frst
ever based on the critical text of the Gt-
tinger Septuagint edition. This commentary
understands 1 Esdras not simply as a fragment of the Chronistic history, nor
as merely a compilation, but rather as a coherent narrative. German text.

Nahum / Habakuk / Zefanja
by Walter Dietrich
The distinctiveness of this commentary
lies in its consistent rotation between
synchronic and diachronic views. This double
perspective is directed toward the three
prophetic books as a single entity, toward
each individual book, and toward the
interpretation of each pericope. The result is
a sophisticated picture of the structure and
intention of the texts in their fnal form and
of their compositional historyfrom the second half of the 7th century to
the late Old Testament period. Each individual exegetical section opens with
a precise, text-critically supported translation and fnishes with a synthesis of
the most important results of the analysis. German text.

Der Brief des Jakobus
by Peter Wick
The epistle of James is an early Wisdom text
from the Jerusalem Judeo-Christian context.
The epistle is formally presented as a simple
sequence of individual topics relevant for the
way of life. Yet the present exegesis shows
through which meticulous argumentation
techniques the various topics are developed
and interconnected. The reappraisal of early
Jewish traditions reveals the observance of
the Torah and the wealth of meaning in this epistle. German text.

Alte Texte in neuen Kontexten
Wo steht die sozialwissenschaftliche Bibelexegese?
edited by Wolfgang Stegemann and Richard DeMaris
The central theme of this volume is the incipient social and cultural turn in biblical studies in the 1970s, which represents one
of the most important innovations in the scholarly research of the Old and New Testaments in the 20th and beginning of the
21st century. The unilaterally narrowed focus which traditional exegesis placed on theological ideas and prominent individuals
is deliberately widened. Biblical texts are interpreted in terms of their social, economic, political and cultural contexts through
which they were characterized. The social-scientifc interpretation of the Bible thus enables a deepened understanding of
numerous biblical statements. The contributions demonstrate the efciency of this methodology, whereby sociological and
socio-historical as well as ethnological and cultural-anthropological avenues are presented. German text.

Diodore the Theologian
in his Commentary of Psalms 150
by Benjamin D. Wayland
This study examines the role of theology in the biblical commentary of a fourth-century pastor and teacher. The notion
that theology and scripture are inextricably connected in early Christian thinking has become a scholarly commonplace in
contemporary patristic scholarship. But the nature of the connection has been less than clear, particularly with respect to the
commentary on Psalms 1-50 (ca. 372) composed by Diodore of Tarsus (d. ca. 394).

The Atonement
in Lukan Theology
by John Kimbell
In the past century of critical scholarship
on Luke-Acts, it has become commonplace
to afrm that Luke attaches no direct
soteriological value to the death of Jesus.
More specifcally, the scholarly consensus
afrms that Luke-Acts does not present Je-
sus death as an atonement for sin. Rather,
Lukes soteriology is understood to center
upon Jesus resurrection and exaltation as Lord. In this careful thematic study
of atonement theology in Lukes double-work, John Kimbell demonstrates
that the value Luke attributes to the death of Christ has been underestimated.

Scripture
A Unique Word
by Francis Etheredge
Scripture is a word that both acts at
the heart of a persons life and begets a
testimony like itself. The more a person
looks into the depths of this word, the
clearer it is that there is both real human
authorship and an incredibly subtle
presence of the divine Author. Whether
it is a matter of listening to this word in
Church, drawing on foundational studies on the biblical text, or researching
questions in embryology, philosophy, theology, marriage and ecumenism, a
person is drawn into a divine-human dialogue. In the end, it is impossible to
express the number of human beings who are in this dialogue and there is a
glimpse of the mystery of God calling us to a dynamic communion.
