While Turkey’s total exports decreased by
28 percent in the rst 10 months of the year
compared to the same period of last year, exports
to countries with which a Free Trade Agreement

this term Turkey’s total exports increased by 375

Fifth edition of
Turkish Book
Review released
The fth edition of the Turkish Book Re-
view, Turkey’s rst book review periodical
published in English, has been released.
Displayed at distinguished international
book fairs including the Frankfurt Book Fair, the
periodical aims to promote Turkish literature to
the world and broaden its recognition beyond
Turkey’s borders by including information about
books and writers from all genres.
The fth edition features special articles on
the literature, culture and politics in the Midd-
le East. While George Messo’s article shines the
spotlight on important authors Necip Mahfuz
and Mahmud Dervi, Akif Kireçci explores mo-
dern Arab literature in his article.
The magazine also features two interviews;
one is with Victoria R. Holbrook on the transla-
tion of eyh Galip’s “Hüsn-ü Ak” (Beauty and
Love), while the other one is with Doan Hzlan
on the promotion of Turkish literature abroad.
In addition to several more articles on va-
rious issues, the fth edition also introduces
many Turkish authors, including Mim Kemal
Öke, Talat S. Halman, Muazzez lmiye Ç, s-
kender Pala and Mustafa Balbay.
“[The magazine is] the rst source for publis-

Charlie Sheen
out of jail after
domestic incident
Actor Charlie Sheen, star of the hit sit-
com “Two and a Half Men,” has been
released from jail in the Colorado ski resort city
of Aspen after his Christmas Day arrest on do-
mestic violence charges, police said.
Sheen, 44, was booked on felony charges
of second-degree assault and menacing, and a
misdemeanor charge of criminal mischief, all of
which were “coupled with a domestic violence
component,” the Aspen Police Department said.
He was released after posting an $8,500
bond, and faces a court hearing on Feb. 8. Police
declined additional comment, saying a news re-
lease would be issued today with any new details.
Police did not identify the person whom
Sheen was accused of assaulting. But various
websites have said Sheen shoved his third wife,
Brooke Mueller, during a heated quarrel. TMZ
reported that Mueller had been drinking heav-
ily when she dialed 911 about 8:30 a.m. MST
(10:30 a.m. EST), and subsequently recanted
her allegations against Sheen.
A spokeswoman for the Aspen Police De-
partment declined to comment on the TMZ
report, as did prosecutor Arnold Mordkin, the
head of the district attorney’s ofce in Aspen.
Sheen’s Los Angeles-based spokesman,
Stan Roseneld, declined comment except to
say: “Don’t be misled by appearances. Appear-
ances and reality can be as different as night
and day. It would benet everyone not to jump
to any conclusion.”
Sheen and Mueller, 32, married in May
2008. The former actress and real estate agent
gave birth to twin sons in April of this year.
Sheen is the son of actor Martin Sheen, for-
mer star of the hit TV drama “The West Wing.”
His brother is actor-director Emilio Estevez.
Sheen has two daughters by his second
wife, actress Denise Richards. Their four-year
marriage ended in 2006 in a bitter divorce that
titillated the tabloids for months.
Sheen, whose lm credits include “Pla-
toon” and “Wall Street,” is best known for
his starring role as a wealthy, womanizing
Malibu bachelor on the bawdy CBS sitcom
“Two and a Half Men,” one of television’s
top-rated shows. Los Angeles Reuters

Newspaper
cane goes to
oldest town resident
A western Massachusetts woman who
helped revive the tradition of giving a
cane from The Boston Post newspaper to her
town’s oldest resident has become its latest
recipient. Hazel Burdick turned 101 in Au-
gust. She received the gold-tipped cane this
week in a ceremony in Williamstown, a rural
community of about 8,000 residents in the
heart of the Berkshire Mountains. The pub-
lisher of the now-defunct Boston Post gave
hundreds of the canes in 1909 to towns in
Maine, New Hampshire, Massachusetts and
Rhode Island. It was a publicity gimmick and
a way to honor the communities’ oldest resi-
dents. Williamstown revived its tradition 10
years ago after Burdick pushed ofcials in the
town to nd its lost cane, which was discov-
ered later in a resident’s attic. Burdick says
she’d been hoping for decades for her turn to
receive it. Williamstown, Mass., AP
