Anglia Marking System 2010

Principal Examiners comment

This year we piloted a new method of marking the writing papers, breaking down
each essay into areas of competence and allocating marks for each area. Although this
resulted in more work for the markers, it allowed for a more robust standardisation.
We are therefore introducing this method permanently.
For compositions at Advanced and Proficiency/AcCEPT levels, the markers award a
mark according to CARAT
C = content organisation
A = accuracy
R = range of vocabulary and structure
A = appropriacy of tone and register
T = task completion
Each area of competency is awarded 5 marks. Essays and letters at other levels are
judged on variations of this, according to the total number of marks available to be
awarded.
The examples of essays and letters are all genuine answers to exam questions. Below
the essay you will see a section of Examiners comments, followed by the
CART/CARAT grades awarded. Please note that the examiners comments are
intended as a guide for teachers using the website, to see the reasoning behind the
grades awarded. Markers will only record the CART/CARAT grades on the exam
paper. However, teachers may find the comments useful when preparing students to
take an Anglia examination, as it will give them an idea of what the examiner is
looking for.

past tenses. Significant errors throughout, which impede comprehension
Range of Language - a very limited range
Appropriacy of register- Neutral register is appropriate for the task but too many errors
Task completion Task only partially completed. Too short. No reasons given for why the

Which holiday resort in your own country would you most like to visit and why?
(200 250 words)
My country has a lot of nice holiday resorts but the holiday resort I most like to visit is the
Kerinia. Kerinia is the smallest city of Cyprus and it is in the north.
Kerinia is small but a beautiful and traditional city. The population is only about 30,000 people.
The most of the Kerinias inhabitants are Turkish because in July of 1974 the Turkish occipied the
Kerinia.
The Kerinia is a seaplace city but in the south of Kerinia they are a lot of mountains. So if you go
in Kerinia you can go in the sea but and in the mountains.
In addition Kerinia has also a lot of accient places. Two of them is the abey of Belapais which had
been builted by the Italics in the 15th century. The other is the Kerinias castle which had been
builted by the Bysanticks in the 10th century. In the castle you can see an accient ship, the Kerinia
1, which had been found into the sea in 1972.
If you go in Kerinia you can visit the port of the city. The port is small and the only think you can
see is some fishing boats. Near to the port there are a lot of restaurants, cafes and bars. In Kerinia
there is a cinema, so if you go in Kerinia you have fun.
The Kerinia is the most beautifull and traditional city of Cyprus and that the why I would most
like to visit this city. I hope that one day I will can go.

Write an account of a great escape. (200-250 words)

I was very happy when I got on the bus with my friends for the summer
camp on the mountains. Everything was perfect so I couldnt imagine what
was going to be.
We arrived in our camp, which was surrounded by tall, green trees. We went
to our rooms and all my friends went to sleep. I couldnt sleep so I decided to
go for a walk through the woods. I was walking, admiring nature when I
understood that I was far away from the camp and I couldnt find my way
back. I scared and I didnt know what I should do so I started running
without know where I was going.
Suddenly I saw a small house behind some bushes so I decided to stay there
for the night. I got in and I was sleeping on an old wooden bed. A few hours
later I get up and I saw two robbers. They told me that if I screamed, they
would kill me. I was terrified. They phoned my parents and they asked for
money.
Soon after they slept and I escaped. I ran into the dark forest when I heard a
voice telling me to stay there or I would die. My blood ran cold. The man
came near me and when I saw him I realised he was our teacher and I asked
him why he told me not to move. He said that a big snake was near me and if
I moved it would bite me. He took me to the camp where all the children wait
me and I told them my adventure and great escape.
I will never forget that terrifying adventure. I was very lucky to escaped.

Content Organisation The content of the task has been covered and an attempt has been
made at organising a letter of complaint. However, cohesive devices are used incorrectly.
Erratic paragraphing. Errors in layout for a formal letter.
Accuracy / Appropriacy of Register- Significant basic errors in vocabulary and grammar.
No evidence of ability to use tenses. Lack of control and poor punctuation. Although the
errors are basic, they mostly do not prevent the reader from understanding the writers
intention. An attempt has been made at a formal style but significant errors throughout.
Task completion/ Range of Language . Basically completed but reader would have some
problems with lexis (eg started instead of starter, steald instead of stale, alfull instead of
awful) Overall effect on the target reader would be negative.
