Mobile phones. When they were first invented, they were a luxury in society. The
prototype handheld phone used by Dr. Martin Cooper weighed 1.1 kg and
measured 23 cm long. The prototype offered a talk time of just 30 minutes and
took 10 hours to re-charge. During the eighties they were a rarity, and the
majority of people preferred car phones over mobile phones Now however,
mobile phones are inescapable, with the market overcrowded by international
companies competing to be on top.
From the moment you step outside it is hard to go even a few minutes without
seeing somebody utilising a form of mobile device. Technology has come a long
way; the majority of smart phones on the market now are touch screen and come
with capabilities that could only be dreamed of in the seventies. So the question
is.... are Mobile phones a luxury or necessity?
--The iPhone 6 was recently released, costing approximately 600, boasting
innovation not seen from other phones. But with this adventurous technology,
there comes a price; apps now control our lives. From being able to check bus
times to online banking, our phones offer a variety of ways to meet individuals
needs; everything you could ever need is at your fingertips, only a few clicks
away. While the speedy development of this technology is astounding, it also
comes with more than a few drawbacks; our lives can develop into a
subconscious dependence on our mobile phones, and society is beginning to rely
on them for every job, no matter how small.
Males spend an average of eight hours a day on their phone, with female
students spending an average of ten hours a day on their phone. Some students
even report a feeling of overwhelming stress if their phone is not in sight.

[fade out - fade in to stuff with Siobhan]
The world can't depend on mobile phones, surely? To investigate, we asked
student at the Sixth Form College Solihull Siobhan to trade in her iPhone 6 for a
Nokia 3310 for six weeks. Shell be going from arguably the most advanced piece
of technology currently on the market, to a basic model which is only able to
make and receive calls and text. Over the six week period we will be making
regular checks with Siobhan to see the effect the swap has had.
We'll see how she gets on later! :D
We caught up with Siobhan to see how she had been getting on without her
iPhone 6. After six weeks with the Nokia 3310, lets see what she had to say

It is apparent that mobile phones have come a long way, and according to a U.N.
report, six of the seven billion people on planet earth own a mobile phone. We
asked Media teacher at the sixth form college solihull, Nick Waring, for his
opinion on the development in mobile phone technology.

It is clear that the younger generation in particular find it hard to live without
their phones, using it as their primary source to communicate. Perhaps it is
because they haven't known any better, living in an age where the internet has
always existed as a simple and easy way to connect around the world. Could this
indicate that mobile phones are more of a necessity than a luxury?
