Using Lingua Latina!

To use this AWESOME book most effectively, there are a few things to
keep in mind, especially as we delve into the first Chapter:
1) PAY ATTENTION TO ENDINGS
-Make sure to pay attention to the different endings on words;
changes in endings represent changes in meaning!
2) BE AWARE OF LATINS FLEXIBLE WORD ORDER
-Latin does not have a set word order, like English does.
However, note that
the verb is often at the end of the sentence.
3) CONCENTRATE ON MEANING AND CONTEXT
-Focus on content of passage; dont translate into English for
understanding
4) BE PATIENT: KEEP READING
-Often, a sentence is understood only when seen together with
other sentences. So, if you dont understand something, keep reading!
5) ANSWERS OFTEN EXPLAIN QUESTIONS
-The text asks many questions that are followed by an answer. It
is often
necessary to read the answer before you can be quite sure
of the meaning of
the question (this will make sense once you
start reading).
6) LOOK TO CONTEXT FOR MEANING
-There are plenty of visuals and side notes to help you determine
the meanings of words and grammatical constructions. Only refer to
other grammar/vocabulary sections as a last resort!

*SYMBOLS
-The book uses 4 main symbols in the side notes to help explain certain
concepts without using English-use them to your advantage!
-SYNONYMS =
-Two words/expressions that have more or less identical
sense
-Ex: mom=mother
-ANTONYMS
-Two words/expressions that have opposite meanings
-Ex: good bad
-FURTHER EXPLANATION :

Strategies to Get the Most Out of This Course (and

become a Latin Mastermind)
-Read, read, and reread material covered in the previous
lesson!
and

-This will refresh your memory of what you have already learned
prepare you for the next step.

-Study any illustrations that accompany the new material.

-Remember, their only purpose is to help you understand the
Latin you are
about to read. Do not try to describe in words what
you see, but note the persons, objects, or actions depicted.
-If a Latin caption goes with the illustration, let your eye go back
and forth
between the
two. It may help to read the
caption, then close your eyes and imagine the illustration (and viceversa).
-Read the entire assignment through aloud until you have
some idea of its general sense. DO NOT try to put any of it into
English!
Try to sense what words seem to belong together (hint: careful
attention to
punctuation will help) and what emphasis to give
individual words and
phrases.
-If you are struggling/not comprehending:
-Read the passage again, sentence by sentence. If a clear mental
picture forms
as you read, go on to the next sentence.
-First consult the margin notes and the context itself,
remembering that they provide good clues to the meaning of the word
or phrase which is holding
you up. Then read the Latin again until a
clear and distinct image rises from
the Latin words.
-If you are satisfied that you have made your best effort, but the
meaning is still unclear, underline the difficult part lightly in pencil,
and pay particular
attention when it is dealt with in class. When
the difficulty has been removed,
erase the pencil mark.
*Remember to tackle any difficulties positively, and do not be
contended with failure!!
