angle of 30 to the horizontal as shown in Figure 2. The velocity of the block is constant.

ii) Calculate the frictional force and
iii) Find the acceleration of the block.

Two blocks A and B with mass, mA = 2 kg and mB = 3.5 kg are connected by a string as
shown in Figure 2. The coefficient of kinetic friction between blocks and the table is
k = 0.2. If a force of 50 N is applied to the 3.5 kg mass,

ii) Write Newton's second Law for both block A and B.
iii) Find the acceleration a of the system.

a) A very light (massless) plank of 5 m length is supported at its ends by two ropes. A
man weighing 800 N stands on the plank 2 m from the right-end (as shown in Figure 3).
Find the tension in the two ropes, TA and TB.

b) Figure 5 below shows two boxes connected by a cord running over a frictionless
pulley. The box Y moves down while box Z moves up after the system is released.
Ignore the friction and masses of the pulley.
i) Draw a free body diagram for each box by showing the tension exerted by the cord
and the force of gravity.

ii) Find the acceleration, a, of the system and the tension, T, in the cord when mass of
box Y and Z are 7 kg and 10 kg respectively.

a) A uniform horizontal beam of length 5 m and weight 300 N is hinged to a wall. It's
supported by a cable that makes an angle of 50 with the horizontal as shown in Figure
3. If a painter of mass 60 kg stands at a distance of 1.5 m from the wall,
i) show all the forces acting on the beam and the points at which these forces act,
ii) calculate the tension in the cable and
iii) find the horizontal and vertical forces exerted on the beam by the wall.

b) A 20.0 kg box is released from rest on a rough inclined plane tilted at an angle of 33
to the horizontal as shown in Figure 4. The coefficient of kinetic friction between the box
and the inclined plane is 0.25.
