Magic Tile Puzzle

Creating a generic tile puzzle and turning it into a picture puzzle.

1. Open StudentPuzzle.world and resave it with a new name, e.g. PuzzleMN.world (use your
initials or another naming method)
2. Click the rule tool and drag it up to the gold puzzle tile to get the Rule Maker Window to
appear. Click on the little orange tab at the bottom left to open the AndIf area of that rule.
3. Click the mouse icon on the left and drag it to the picture of the gold puzzle tile on the left of
the Rule Maker. This sets up a rule so that if the tile is clicked something will happen.

We want the rule to say, if this tile is clicked, and if theres an empty space to the right,
then move into the empty space.
4. Make a Move Right rule as shown in the image above.
5. Name the rule Move Right (in the space at the top of the Rule Maker window).

6. Theres one other thing to do while in this window, and its not obvious. Notice the
appearance is test that is always automatically added to a rule. This makes the tool work
only for one particular appearance of the tile character. Since our tiles use many appearances
and we want the tool to apply to all appearances, we want to delete this test. Click on the
appearance is... test so that it is outlined in yellow and then press the delete key on the
keyboard.

7. Click the green check labeled Done.

8. Start your program. Click on the gold tile and see if your tile moves to the right.
9. Click on the little red stop button to stop running your program.
10. Follow these same steps (1-7) to create Rules for:

Move Left

Move Down

Move Up
Note that you may have to position your tile piece so that there is an empty space in the
appropriate place to create a rule. When testing the up and down rules you may need to
put some objects to the sides of your gold tile to prevent it from moving into an empty
space on the left or right.

11. After you have created the four rules for your tile, you can double click on the tile to bring up
the Character Window with the four rules listed.

Close the Character Window when youve looked over the four rules.

12. Now use the stamp icon to duplicate your tile to fill in all but one space in the puzzle.
13. Run the puzzle and click on tiles. Any tile you click that is adjacent to the empty square
should move into that square.
Youve now completed your generic puzzle.
It probably works fine. The problem is there is no
point to it since all the tiles are the same.

14. Now CMND click on each tile piece (right mouse click on a PC) and assign it a different
appearance chosen from the 3 bird pieces shown. Note that there are green appearances
shown as well. These are used for a bigger puzzle.

15. Move the pieces around so that they form the bird
16. With the bird on the screen, press the play button and click tiles to
mix them up. This will be the version that you can offer to
unsuspecting puzzle solvers. SAVE your game!
Congratulations! You have now completed your bird puzzle.
It is very easy at this point to make a 3x2 puzzle on the same screen just for practice. Change the
size of the puzzle, add two more tiles, and assign new appearances to the tiles. Use the dragon
appearances this time.
