Units of Study

Safety (1 week)
Students will understand that using a tool correctly and safely will lead to the efficient
completion of a task.

Students will know:

• the necessary tools used to complete various tasks
• proper use of tools
• safety related to those tools

Students will be able to:

• identify tools for a specific task
• demonstrate proper tool usage

Unit Assessment - By the end of this unit each student will:

• score 90% or better on the general safety test

Engineering Design Process (1 week)

Students will understand that using the Engineering Design Process (EDP) will lead to
the efficient completion of a task.

Students will know:

• the steps of the EDP
• meaning of the steps
• what applying the steps looks like
• how the steps link together

Students will be able to:

• follow the steps of the EDP for a specific task by building a product
• document the steps of the EDP
• demonstrate the steps of the EDP

Unit Assessment - By the end of this unit each student will:

• 80% or better on EDP written test
• 80% or better according to rubric on solving a problem using the EDP steps

Manufacturing and Engineering Careers (4 weeks)

Students will understand what careers in manufacturing and engineer are.

Students will know:

• common manufacturing careers
• required education for manufacturing careers
• common engineering careers and fields
• required education for engineering careers

Students will be able to:

• research manufacturing and engineering careers
• communicate details about manufacturing and engineering careers

Unit Assessment - By the end of this unit each student will:

• share information about a manufacturing or engineering career

Manufacturing Processes (4 weeks)

Students will understand common manufacturing processes and basic ways goods are
created.

Students will know:

• safety related to processes used in class
• quality control and industry measurement techniques
• metal forming processes
• plastic forming processes

Student will be able to:

• work safely
• demonstrate the ability to do precise measurements related to manufacturing
• demonstrate a metal forming process
• demonstrate a plastic forming process

Unit Assessment - By the end of this unit each student will:

• 80% or better on processes written test
• 80% or better according to rubric on using a combination of manufacturing
processes to produce a product

Welding Processes (4 weeks)

Students will understand that all (metal) welding processes use heat to fuse metal
together.

Students will know:

• safety related to processes used in class
• how metal is fused together in the welding process
• the steps for several welding applications
• know the different types of metals and how they react to the welding process

Students will be able to:

• work safely
• explain how metal is fused together
• demonstrate how to use a spot welder
• observe what happen to metal when it is heated

Unit Assessment - By the end of this unit each student will:

• be able to explain and demonstrate a welding process to create a metal project.
