About ODU & Coupler, Continued

About the
Coupler

The coupler (with two ODUs mounted on it) is used when you want to ensure
hot standby (asymmetrical coupler suggested) or frequency diversity
(symmetrical coupler suggested) operation modes and you have only one
antenna.
INTRACOM TELECOM can provide you with specially designed antennas
(called integrated antennas with diameter up to 1,8 m or 6 ft) onto which you
can directly mount the coupler without the need of a waveguide. In case you
have a non-integrated antenna, you should get the appropriate mounting kit
in order to mount the coupler onto the mast and connect the coupler to the
antenna through a waveguide.

The coupler is provided in two versions depending on the attenuation at its

ports:
Symmetrical coupler
Asymmetrical coupler
The symmetrical coupler inserts typically equal ODU Antenna attenuation
at both ports (ODU#1, ODU#2). The RF attenuation differs with the operating
frequency.

The asymmetrical coupler inserts different ODU Antenna attenuation at the

two ports (Main ODU, Secondary ODU). The RF attenuation differs with the
operating frequency.

Site Prerequisites, Continued

Network port
distributors

Regarding the network ports (inclusive of STM-1, Ethernet, E1) provided by

the indoor equipment, suitable optical (or electrical) network port distributors
should be available.
The exact location of the network port distributors, as well as the network
ports to reserve, should be known prior to installing the indoor equipment.
Also, all the reserved ports on the network port distributors should be
qualified and tested before realizing the network connections with the indoor
equipment.

Indoor
premises
conditions

The operating conditions (temperature, humidity) at the indoor premises

should meet the specifications given by the manufacturer of the indoor
equipment.

Indoor
grounding
system

All racks within the installation premises should be connected to a lowresistance grounding system. The metal body of the rack, into which the
subracks are to be mounted, should be connected to this grounding system.
The enclosure of each subrack must be electrically connected to the racks
metal body (via a short grounding cable) to provide protection against
harmful discharge conditions.

Outdoor
grounding
system

A dedicated, low-resistance grounding system (typically < 3 ) is required.

A grounding point (designated GND) should be located close to the mounting
position of the radio boxes.
The box of each radio transceiver will be connected to this grounding point,
via the supplied grounding cable. This will provide protection against harmful
lightning conditions.

Cable conduits

Appropriate cable conduits should exist for the routing of installed cables,
inclusive of the coaxial IF cable(s) connecting the indoor equipment with the
outdoor transceiver boxes on the buildings roof.
Continued on next page

18

Outdoor Radio Equipment (for INTRALINK / OmniBAS)

Installation and Cabling Manual - Edition 7.0

Site Prerequisites, Continued

IF cables

The IF cables, connecting the indoor equipment with the outdoor equipment,
should be of coaxial 50-ohm type.
The maximum length of the IF cables depends on their quality and the
attenuation that they impose to the carried IF signal.
Typical lengths can reach 150 m, using a low-cost coaxial cable of 10,5 dB /
100 m maximum attenuation at 350 MHz, or 300 m, using a low-loss coaxial
cable of 5 dB / 100 m maximum attenuation at 350 MHz.
Under no circumstance should the total attenuation (imposed by
the IF cable itself) exceed 16 dB at 350 MHz.

Outdoor
installation
requirements

The outdoor equipment, inclusive of the radio transceiver(s) and

antenna(s), should be mounted on a mast or on a tower. The tower or the
mast, should be grounded and bear a lightning-rod.
The pole, onto which the system will be mounted:
- Should have 2,5 to 4 outer diameter
- Should be perfectly perpendicular to allow correct alignment of the
antenna.
Each antenna should point toward the antenna of the remote station,
according to the planned co-ordinates. No obstacles should exist between
the antennas beaming lobes.
Continued on next page

Outdoor Radio Equipment (for INTRALINK / OmniBAS)

Installation and Cabling Manual - Edition 7.0

Site Prerequisites, Continued

Power supply
requirements

Power consumption and input DC voltage range are as specified by the

manufacturer of the indoor equipment.

Rack
requirements

Rack requirements are as specified by the manufacturer of the indoor

equipment.

Lightning
protection

The network port distributors (optical distributors excluded) and the power
supply distributors should be equipped with the appropriate gas arresters, to
provide protection against lightning conditions.
Such conditions may induce voltage peaks on the cables, and thus disturb
the operation of the indoor equipment. For this purpose, all electrical
distributors should be connected to the local grounding system to allow the
installed gas arresters to operate.

Preparation of
the installation
premises

Access to the installation premises must be facilitated during the installation

period.
Entrances must be large enough to enable the easy transportation of the new
equipment.
The floor must be level, smooth and able to bear the load of the equipment.
The roof must be engineered to bear the weight of the service personnel and
the outdoor equipment.

Safety

The indoor equipment premises should be of restricted access.

Only trained, authorized personnel should have access to the installed
equipment.
Appropriate labeling should exist at points with high risk of contact with
hazardous voltage.
A list with emergency phone numbers (e.g. medical assistance numbers)
should be hung at easy-to-view positions.
Also, recommended are for safety purposes, a fire detection system and fire
extinguishers (installed at easy-to-access points) inside the installation
premises.

from the plate and use them to fix the two mounting clamps onto it.

Tighten the one pair of screws with 24 Nm torque and loosely fasten
the other pair of screws.

You are now ready to perform the coupler mounting onto the mast.

NOTE

Two people are needed for mounting the ODUs

coupler assembly onto the mast, one to hold the
assembly while the other is performing the mounting.
Before climbing onto the tower, be sure you have
with you all the necessary material. Do not forget to
take with you the IF coaxial cables and the coupler
grounding cable, already prepared. Also switch-off
the indoor unit taking into consideration the following
Caution.
PLUGGING / UNPLUGGING THE IF COAXIAL
CABLE
Never plug or unplug the IF coaxial cable to or
from the outdoor transceiver boxes when the
respective indoor equipment is powered on and
operating.
There is risk of equipment failure and/or electrical
shock, as the IF cable carries the outdoor
transceivers DC operating voltage
(48 V).

Mount the coupler plate on the mast tightening the two pairs of bolts
symmetrically.

Mount the coupler-ODUs assembly onto the plate.

If the coupler mounting plate provided is with PBR flange (i.e. the
flange with the O-ring), you should interpose the connecting plate
provided between the waveguide flange and the coupler mounting
plate flange as shown in the photo below (the brass surface towards
the tin plated waveguide surface) and then proceed to step 8.

Step

Action
Avoid making any sharp or small radius bends
on the flexible and twistable waveguides!
Twisting or bending the waveguide beyond a
certain limit (see Appendix on page 72) could
cause permanent damage to the waveguide
(hearing a scratching/stretching noise from the
inside wire frame of the waveguide indicates you
have crossed the limit).

With an hexagonal key apply 2,5 Nm torque to screw the waveguide

PBR flange (i.e. the flange with the O-ring) onto the coupler
waveguide port using four Allen screws of the set provided.
NOTE

Make sure the O-ring is found on the PBR

flange of the waveguide.

With an hexagonal key apply 4,5 Nm torque to screw the UBR

flange of the waveguide onto the antenna feeder according to the
antenna polarization.

NOTE

Make sure the O-ring is found on the antenna

feeder.
You are recommended to use one or two
waveguide clamp kits depending on the case in
areas with strong wind.

10

Perform steps 10 to 13 of the procedure in par. Back-to-back ODUs

with Coupler and Integrated Antenna on page 53.
