MynameisJJJohnson,andIamanengineeringtechnologyteacheratGoshenHighSchool,in
thehometownofSeeMeCNC.LetsjustsaythatIhavebeeninterestedin3Dprintingforawhile,
eversinceitwasfirstintroducedtomeasastudentatBallStateUniversityduringmyundergrad
in2004.Itwasjustfascinatingtomethatyoucouldtakeafile,putitinamachine,andthe
machinewouldspitoutyourpart.Ispentmyfirstsixyearsbeggingmyadministratorstofindthe
fundingtobringthisaweinspiringtechnologytomyclassroom,butbudgetconstraintsalways
seemedtogetintheway.Itdidnthelpthattheavailabilityconsistedof$1530thousanddollar
machines.
OnedaythoughIsawaposterhungatalocal711gasstation,advertising3Dprintersforsale
forlessthan$1,000.Fromthereitsallhistory,administrationsignedthecheckthenextdayandI
spentmysummerbuildingtheH1model3DPrinterfromSeeMeCNC.Ayearandahalflater,I
nowowntwoofmyownprintersfromSeeMeCNCandtheschoolisnowuptofour.
Whywouldanyoneoranyschoolneedsomany3Dprintersyoumayask?Itssimple,they
motivate,captivate,andunleashthecreativepossibilitiesthatourstudentsareyearningfor.
Whenastudenthasa3Dmodelonthecomputeritsneat.Whentheyprinttheirdesignandhold
itintheirhands,manipulateit,finditsstrengthsandweaknesses,wellthatsjustincredible.3D
printinghasbecomeapowerfultoolinallofmyclassesfromconstructiontodesign,engineering
principlestoaprojectwecompeteincalledtheShellEcoMarathon.Itcanbeapowerfultoolfor
youtoo.
Ihaveputthiseducationalcurriculumtogetherthinkingofyou,thebeginner.No,werenotgoing
tostartoutprintingfullyassembledworkingmodelswiththreadedfeaturesandthewholegamut
(bytheway,itcanbedone).Ratherthecurriculumcoverstheinformationyouandyourstudents
needtogetstartedwiththeOrionorRostockMax3Dprinter.YouwillfindreadytouseGoogle
Presentations,activities,projectsandalloftherequiredfilestogetyoustarted.Thecurriculumis
extremelyflexible,capableofbeingimplementsintraditionalandblockschedules,andadaptable
forclassesofallvaryingsizes.Reviewtheinformationprovidedanddecidewhatfitsyour
classroomsneedsbest.
IhighlyrecommendtryingoutthecourseonCanvas,afreelearningmanagementsolutionthatI
usewithmystudents.Itsfree,easytosetupanduse,andbestofallcanbeaccessedbyyou
andyourstudentsanywhere,anytime.Itisimportanttonoteaswell,thatIwishtocontinue
developingcurricularresourcesforteacherslikeyouinterestedinbringthepotentialof3D
printingfrontandcenterforyourstudents.However,ifyourarenotinterestedinCanvas,allof
