The inner rings of bearings having a tapered bore are always mounted with an int
erference fit. The degree of interference in this case is not determined by the
chosen shaft tolerance, as with bearings having a cylindrical bore, but by how f
ar the bearing is driven up on to the tapered seating on the shaft, or on to the
adpater or withdrawal sleeve. The original radial internal clearance is reduced
in the process and the reduction provides information on the fit obtained.
<br><br>
When mounting self-aligning ball bearings and spherical roller bearings with tap
ered bore, as well as double row cylindrical roller bearings and CARB bearings w
ith tapered bore either the reduction in radial internal clearance or the axial
displacement on the tapered seating is determined and used as a measure of the d
egree of interference.
<br><br>
Small bearings may be driven up on to a tapered journal or a withdrawal sleeve u
sing a nut and on to adapter sleeves using the sleeve nut. A hook spanner or imp
act spanner can be used to tighten the nut. The seating surfaces of the shaft an
d sleeve should be lightly oiled before mounting is started.
<br><br>
For larger bearings, considerably more force is required and SKF hydraulic nuts
should be used. If the oil injection method is also employed, the force required
can be further reduced. The oil injection equipment required for this method is
also available from SKF.
<br><br>
The hydraulic nut is screwed on to a threaded section of the journal or on to th
e thread of the sleeve so that its annular piston abuts the inner ring of the be
aring, a nut on the shaft, or a disc attached to the end of the shaft.

With the oil injection method, oil under high pressure is introduced between the
mating surfaces. An oil film is formed, which separates the mating surfaces and
appreciably reduces the friction between them. The method is mainly used when m
ounting bearings directly on tapered journals (gigure 4), but is also used to mo
unt bearings on adapter and withdrawal sleeves which have been prepared for the
oil injection method. The requisite pressure is produced by an oil injector or p
ump, the oil being supplied to the mating surfaces via ducts and distributor gro
oves in the shaft or sleeve. The necessary ducts and grooves in the shaft must b

e considered when designing the bearing arrangement. Figure 5 shows a spherical

roller bearing mounted on a withdrawal sleeve with oil ducts. The withdrawal sle
eve is pressed into the bearing bore by tightening the screws in turn.
