TIME MANAGEMENT EXERCISE

MITM05016

1. Network diagram

a) Draw an AOA network diagram representing the project

Figure 1: AOA Network Diagram

b) Identify all of the paths on the networkCiagram

Note: Assume all durations are in days.
Path 1: A D F G J
Length = 10 + 4 + 6 + 4 + 12 = 36
Page 1 of 4

Path 2: A D F G I K L
Length = 10 + 4 + 6 + 4 + 6 + 8 + 10 = 48
Path 3: A D F H K L
Length = 10 + 4 + 6 + 8 + 8 + 10 = 46
Path 4: A E I K L
Length = 10 + 8 + 6 + 8 + 10 = 42
Path 5: A E J
Length = 10 + 8 + 12 = 30
Path 6: B F G I K L
Length = 12 + 6 + 4 + 6 + 8 + 10 = 46
Path 7: B F G J
Length = 12 + 6 + 4 + 12 = 34
Path 8: B F H K L
Length = 12 + 6 + 8 + 8 + 10 = 44
Path 9: C G I K L
Length = 8 + 4 + 6 + 8 + 10 = 36
Path 10: C G J
Length = 8 + 4 + 12 = 24
Path 11: C H K L
Length = 8 + 8 + 8 + 10 = 34
c) What is the critical path for this project and how long is it?
Since the critical path is the longest path through the network diagram, Path 2, A D
F G I K L, is the critical path for this project with 48 days.
d) What is the shortest possible time needed to complete this project?
Even though the critical path is thelongest path, it represents the shortest time required
to complete a project. Therefore, the shortest possible time needed to complete this project is
48 days.
2. Gantt chart

a) Using the information in Table 6-4, draw horizontal bars to illustrate when you think
each task would logically start and end. Then use Project 2010 to create a Gantt chart and
network diagram based on this information.
b) Identify at least two milestones that could be included under each of the process groups
in Table 6-4. Then write a detailed description of each of these milestones that meets the
SMART criteria.

Realistic: allowing project to start
Time-framed: appropriate time for acceptance or removal projects

Milestone 2: Project proposal signed - SMART criteria

Specific: official commitment

Measurable: project planning details confirmed by signatures
Assignable: project manager, sponsors, correlative staff
Realistic: an event to execute project
Time-framed: durations for job details to finish

Milestone 3: Acceptance contract signed - SMART criteria

Specific: A official commitment

Measurable: All details set to accept project and confirmed by signatures
Assignable: sponsors and responsible parties
Realistic: important time to accept project
Time-framed: appropriate time to document final report about the project
