: THE EFFECT OF USING ROLE PLAY TECHNIQUE ON


STUDENTS ACHIEVEMENT IN WRITING NARRATIVE TEXT
3. Rationale
:
a. Why the problem is problematized supported by empirical data :
Language is communication of thoughts and feeling through a system of arbitrary
signals, such as sounds, voice, gestures or written symbols. English as a means of
communication, Indonesian government has included English as a foreign language
which needs to be studied at schools or colleges. In the curriculum of Indonesia,
students have to master four language skills namely: listening, reading, writing and
speaking. Writing is one of the most important skills in learning besides listening,
reading, and speaking. Writing is a skill that needs practice. It is not easy as some
people think especially to write a narrative.
b. Current issues :
Based on the writers experience in teaching practice in vocational school ( SMK
1 LIMA PULUH), students ability of such skill was quite low, especially in writing
narrative text. Students often failed in writing because they faced some difficulties
such as lack of vocabulary, poor structure, technique, literature and information. They
did not give much attention and enthusiasm on writing. They might have some ideas
based on their experience and the information they got, but they did not know how to
express their ideas in writing narrative text. So the writers proposed a new teaching
model that is effective, easy, interesting to the students. Therefore, Role Play
Technique is proposed to be one model, which might be able to solve the writing
problem.
c. The significance of the study
a. It provides the English teacher an alternative strategy in teaching Narrative
Text. To plan and to conduct a better motivation of the student on teaching
learning process.
b. The students can improve their ability in writing skill through this strategy in
an enjoyable classroom environment.
c. Those who interested in doing research related to this study.
4. Related theories
Role-playing is a teaching strategy that fits within the social family of models
(Joyce and Weil, 2000). This strategy emphasize the social nature of learning, and see
cooperative behavior as stimulating students both socially and intellectually. It
encourages thinking and creativity, lets students develop and practice new language
and behavioral skills in a relatively nonthreatening setting, and can create the
motivation
and
involvement
necessary
for
learning
to
occur.

5. Research Methodolgy
This research will be conducted by using experimental research.
