This enormous building, constructed around 1200 as a fortress and
AR rebuilt in the mid-16th century for use as a royal palace, began its
career as a public museum in 1793. As part of Mitterand's grands
projets, the Louvre was revamped in the 1980s with the addition of a
21-metre glass pyramid entrance. Initially deemed a failure, the new
design has since won over those who regard consistency as
AR inexcusably boring.

Vast scrums of people puff and pant through the rooms full of paintings,
sculptures and antiquities, including the Mona Lisa, Venus de Milo and
the Winged Victory (which looks like it's been dropped and put back
AR together). If the clamour becomes unbearable, your best bet is to pick a
period or section of the Louvre and pretend that the rest is somewhere
across town.

Hubert Robert's great work was the realization of the Louvre Museum.
A comparison of two of his paintings, the first showing a ruined barrel-
ment :
vault hall, and the second the Grande Galerie in the Louvre,
saint martin immediately reveals the source of the idea for the top lighting and the "antique effect" that the newly designed
gallery is open to the sky. The sublimity of antique ruins was to be transferred to the real building, and this in
Goerges Pompidou turn was to be a treasure chest of art and a worthy successor to its antique models.

1889: During the evening of the tower's inauguration, 10,000 gas street
AR lamps adorned the steeple and platforms. Two projectors on the tower
top illuminated the other Parisian monuments below. The blue, white

250,000 colored lamps, which adorns three sides of the tower and is
AR visible 30 kilometers away.

1985, New Year's Eve: Inauguration of a new lighting system, the final

This is the Arc de Triomphe, a 16-story war monument conceived by
AR Napoleon, designed by architect Jean-François Chalgrin, and built at
the top of the avenue des Champs-Elysees. It was constructed
between 1810 and 1836.
It is possible to reach the roof of the monument by climbing nearly three
hundred steps, and the view is excellent. I haven't been up there very
AR often, but I do have some nice photos of several Paris streets taken
from the top of the arch, including a photo of the avenues leading to La
Defense, a photo of the Avenue Foch, and a photo of the ever-popular
Champs-Elysees.

AR The arch is surrounded by a huge vehicular roundabout. Some tourists

foolishly try to cross the roundabout in front of hundreds of cars in order
to get to the monument. The seasoned habitués of the city know that
there is an underground pedestrian walkway on the northern side of the
Champs-Elysees that provides safe access to the monument.
This monument, like so many others, is intended to glorify war and
ment : those who died waging it. Beneath the arch lies the tombe du soldat
inconnu (“tomb of the unknown soldier”), and a flame of remembrance
saint martin
burns above the tomb. There are regular military ceremonies at this
Goerges Pompidou location to commemorate the many and varied massacres that have colored French and world history.
