EN 16005 - Power operated pedestrian doorsets

EN 16005
Prologue
The EN 16005 defines test
methods and protection
requirements on Automatic Door
Systems
GEZE products (drives and
protection devices) already
comply to the requirements of the
EN 16005

The EN 16005 has been presented

in Dec 2012 according to CEN/TC
33/WG4. Countries have to give the
norm the status National Standard
in April 2013.
You should start to communicate the
specific requirements and offer your
customers the right solutions in your
market

The EN 16005 is a chance to

increase your turnover not only
with door drive systems, but
including accessories and
actuation devices such as highlevel safety sensors

EN 16005 - Power operated pedestrian doorsets

What is EN 16005?
Scope (see specification Chapter 1)
EN 16005 contains
requirements regarding design and test methods for power
operated pedestrian doorsets
usage safety regulations of doorsets for normal access and escape
routes / fire resistance

Safeguarding at danger points

Protective Devices
Protective devices can be:
Pressure-sensitive protective equipment (PSPE)
sensing function is actuated when mechanical pressure is applied to the surface
e.g. pressure sensitive edges, trip bars, mats, etc.

Electro-sensitive protective equipment (ESPE)

sensing function is actuated by interruption or reflection of beams/waves
e.g. photo cells, light grids, light detectors, acoustic devices, vision detector sensors, etc.

Protective devices shall be designed so that:

a command preventing hazardous leaf movements shall be given while a protective device is actuated
after resetting a functional check is carried out and normal operation of the doorset is started only if safety
functions are in place
permissible operating forces shall not be exceeded after a protective device has been actuated
ESPE that continuously adapt to environmental changes shall be field adjusted to adapt to any
environmental change lasting at least 30 s (DIN 18650: 60 s)
sensor control units and output signal switching devices which can be exposed to outdoor conditions shall
be protected to a level of at least IP44 or higher in installation
the protective device complies with the requirements of EN 12978

EN 16005 - Power operated pedestrian doorsets

Safeguarding at danger points

Guards, Barriers & Safety distances
Guards are protective devices like enclosures, covers, enclosing guards or fixed
protection leaves and shall be designed so that:
persons cannot reach any danger point up to a height of 2,5 m above floor level
they can only be removed or opened with the aid of a tool
they do not cause additional hazards (e.g. shearing or drawing in)

Barriers are intended to direct pedestrian traffic or to avoid pedestrians from

entering non-safe zones and shall be designed so that:
they have a height of minimum of 900 mm
children cannot easily climb over or crawl under them
they are suitably secured
they able to withstand forces occurring in normal service
they do not cause additional hazards (e.g. shearing or drawing in)

Sufficiently dimensioned safety distances to prevent crushing or drawing in are:

8 mm or 25 mm for fingers
200 mm for the head
500 mm for the body

meter) requires min 5.4 seconds to open resp. to fully
close.

Revolving doorsets
Requirements for doorsets in escape routes and emergency exits (1)
General issues
Only doorsets with break-out function are
allowed for escape routes and emergency
exits (at any doorset position!)
Break-out function is unlocked when mains
power goes off (or via appropriate command
of e.g., a fire alarm system)
Break-out function release trigger method is
selected in the following order:
1. External signal via fire alarm or building
services control system (GEZE product?)
2. Release device positioned in a 24-h a day
manned area (hotel reception) with direct
view of the doorset
3. emergency stop equipment when the
doorset stops releases break-out mechanism

2012 by GEZE GmbH www.geze.com

All GEZE revolving doors in escape

routes are equipped with break-out
solutions a) and f)
Alternative solution:
Emergency route deviation via swing
doors which are installed beside the
revolving door

Requirements for doorsets in escape routes and emergency exits (2)
General issues (2)
Emergency stop switch required in accordance
to EN ISO 13850 stop category 1
Exception: low energy revolving doorsets shall
be equipped with emergency stop switch stop
category 0.
Emergency stop switches are to be positioned
at the access point in the inner side of the
building
After a reset of an emergency stop, GEZE
revolving doorsets make a functional check and
automatically restart the system if all safety
functions are working correctly

Testing for EN 16005 compliance on site
General issues
Tests are not required if revolving doorset is operated in low energy
mode, otherwise:
At main closing edge/opposing closing edge
Touchless protection (e.g., with GC 338 or GC 334) (Figure a) via
CA reference body; or if a contact is allowed with the doorset, check
permissible dynamic forces!
At secondary closing edge / floor
CB reference body is positioned in the leaf center. The doorset shall
come to a stop without passing over the body (Figure b).
No contact with door leaf is allowed, except for flexible parts of the
protective device
If a ESPE (e.g., GC 338 or GC 334) is used, test should be
performed with reference bodies CA+CB (Figure c)
At main closing edge / inside wall
Reference body CB is positioned at 1200 mm height above the floor
on the drum (Figure d)
No contact of door leaf allowed except for flexible parts of the
protective device

EN 16005
Terms and definitions (1/2)
Power operated pedestrian door

Doorset for pedestrian passage only with one or more leaves that is moved, at least in one direction, by an
external energy supply (e.G. Electrically) instead of manual or stored mechanical energy. It includes drive,
leaves, protective devices and any components needed for its safe operation

Sliding door

Power operated pedestrian doorset with one or more leaves, moving horizontally in its guides parallel to
the adjacent structure

Folding door

Doorset with two or more leaves hinged together with one side of the leaf hinged or pivoted at the
doorset jamb

Revolving door

Power operated pedestrian doorset with one or more leaves connected to a common vertical axis of
rotation within an enclosure

Swing door

Power operated pedestrian doorset with a leaf which is hinged or pivoted at one side

Low energy power operated

door

Power operated pedestrian doorset with a limited kinetic energy

Fire door

Generic term used in this standard for fire resistance doorsets and/or smoke control doorsets

Break-out

System whereby doorset leaves and side screens can be pushed open manually in the direction of escape

Activator

Means by which the power operation of the doorset is started

Cycle

Movement consisting of an opening and closing movement

Lintel

Horizontal structural member spanning an opening at its head to carry a load above the opening

EN 16005
Terms and definitions (2/2)
Side screen

Side wall fixed or with a break out function that can be part of a power operated pedestrian doorset

Track

Component or assembly designed to guide or support a doorset leaf when it moves

Main closing edge

Edge of a doorset leaf, whose distance from the parallel opposing edge or surface determines the usable
aperture

Opposing closing edge

Edge formed by the main closing edge of a counter closing leaf, a fixed edge or a surface against which the
doorset leaf is moving (e.G. frame, floor)

Secondary closing edge

Any other closing edge of a doorset leaf, which is not the main closing edge or the opposing closing edge
