a demonstration, an assemblage , a reinterpretative study

of endless possibilities to comprehend a certain environment
dreambox is a manifesto for the human perception phenomena.

The creation of an environment, interior or exterior, is a

process which results in producing different perceptions
on people who experience it. The perception of surroundings that make up an environment may show a great variety
according to the observer. Therefore, how a place manifests
itself is very dependent on the scope through which we view it.
Based on the fact that the physical environment consists
primarily of objects and the space formed by their
interaction; it is possible to claim that the visual
perception is the key point to create human sensations,
which, at the end, will constitute the spatial experience.

This proposal aims to question and to manipulate the visual

perception of Piazza Gae Aulenti in Milan, Italy; through a
process composed of three steps explained as follows:
- the first, understanding the perception that the architects
aimed to create,
- the second, experimenting the existing perception through
the hypotesis of realistic and/or utopic reconstructed images
on the selected points
- the third, suggesting the creation of an urban/interior
plug-in to provide a specific perceptive alteration which can
be experienced by the visitors.

The situation analysis is focused on one of the four access

points to the piazza, the one following Corso Como; since it is
one of the most visually impressive points of the area because
of the deep one point perspective effect created towards to
the piazza and the monumentality created by the inclination
of the street. In such configurations, the aim is usually gathering attention to the focal point, where the most dominant
urban landscape element is placed. In the case of Piazza Gae
Aulenti the visitor encounters a partial view of the buildings
surrounding the piazza.

The experimentation done by a serie of interpretations applied to the visual configuration of this specific frame shows
that the similar visual configurations have the potential of
creating extremely different perceptions. This serie of collages or montaged images question the existing situation by
refering to the Urbino Ideal City or Monumento Continuo by
Superstudio, and by simply referring to the phenomenon of
sustainable architecture or to the ongoing construction state
of the zone, called Porta Nuova.

phase 1: rendering

phase 2: reconstruction

phase 3: abstraction
As an outcome of this research, a view of the piazza from a
specific point is selected to be undergone visual alterations
to create a completely different experience of the image.
Based on the formal similarities and through abstraction, the
image taken from the architectural rendering is transformed
into a different setting.

The new image is physically constructed by means of elements

in seperate layers. The layers are suspended from the ceiling
of a wooden box structure with a specific amount of distance
which allows the observer to perceive the layered configuration but also the overall composition. The structure is designed to be placed exactly in the same point of view of the
original image, so that it becomes a Dreambox offering an
altered visual perception to the visitor.
