Design of bearing hospital methodology for gas turbine engine rotor support
system
SYNOPSIS

1. Introduction
The modern combat fighter aircraft uses high trust to weight ration gas turbines as their
power plant. Such gas turbine has either single spool or multi spool rotor arrangement
and rotates at speed of 10000 to 20000 RPM. The rotor experiences various load like
aerodynamic load, maneuvering loads, centrifugal loads, fatigue loads, with exposure to
different temperature gradient during engine operation. This situation necessitates the
proper study and selection of rolling element bearing in order to design the rotor support
structure. [1] Identifying the causes of bearing failures and to provide guidance on how to
avoid future problems. If the machinery has been plagued by repeated bearing problems,
the illustrations that complement the text can provide invaluable assistance in identifying
the root cause of a bearing failure. When bearing failure occurs, consider cleaning and
inspecting it and comparing the observations to the result in this series on bearing failure
analysis. [2] Vibration monitoring and analysis is useful tool in the field of predictive
maintenance. Health of rolling element bearings can be easily identified using vibration
monitoring because vibration signature reveals important information about the fault
development within them. Numbers of vibration analysis techniques are being used to
diagnosis of rolling element bearings faults. [3] estimate of main bearings life of aircraft
engines by taking the deep groove ball bearing, which result in some theoretical are
discussion and some relevant measures that enable improving the service life of main
bearings of the aircraft engine. [4] Bearings are critical components of an aircraft engine,
so detecting a defect as early as possible and the ability to assess the damage state in real
time have a profound effect on both operational safety and mission success, particularly
in single-engine aircraft. The fusion of vibration and oil debris information, capitalizing
on the strengths of each approach, results in a sensitive and robust defect detection and
assessment system. [5] Uncertainty analysis and parametric studies are presented for
estimating the fatigue failure probability of surface cracks in silicon nitride ball bearings
subjected to rolling contact fatigue. Uncertainty quantification of input parameters are
presented first based on experimental data, inspection capability, and geometric
reasoning. Surrogate models for equivalent stress intensity factors are then used for
uncertainty propagation, which are built upon high fidelity finite element modeling with
half-penny-shaped surface cracks. [6] Experimental study on the application of the

ultrasound technique for condition monitoring of low speed rolling element bearings and
conventional vibration measurements with seeded faults on inner-race defects.
Review of literature [1-8] from all the papers that I studied which relevant to bearing
hospital, it clearly say that lot of study carried out on care and maintains, life estimation
and etc. But there is no sign of project carried out on the particular term bearing hospital.
So there is a requirement to study on selection of roller and ball bearing considering twin
spool rotor configuration. It includes inspection criteria, preservation methodology, life
estimation, failure analysis, troubleshooting etc. After through study emphasize will be
made to bring out requirements to make bearing hospital for the gas turbine engine
bearing for any in-house gas turbine manufacture.
