IwouldliketowishallparentsandstudentsaHappyandHolyChristmasandIwouldliketothank
everybodyfortheirsupportduringthelastterm.Asever,ithasprovedtobeaverybusytermand
Ihavebeendelightedwiththeenthusiasmshownbyourstudentsforthemanyac vi esinwhich
theyhavetakenpart.WehavefacedsomechallengesthistermandthedeathofRhysHewi was
somethingwhichhadanimpactuponthewholeschoolcommunity.IwouldliketothankeverybodyforthewayinwhichtheyralliedroundandsupportedtheschoolandRhysfamilyduring
whatwasaverydicult me.

2015willbemylastyearasHeadteacherofTheEnglishMartyrsSchoolandSixthForm
CollegesinceIhaveinformedGovernorsofmyinten ontore reattheendoftheSummerterm.Thereiss llalotofwork
todobeforethat meandIcanassureparentsthatIhavenointen onofwindingdown.TowardstheendoftheyearIwill
sharereflec onsofmy38yearsatEnglishMartyrswhichhavebeenhappyandtremendouslyrewarding.Governorsarein
theprocessofappoin nganewHeadtostartinSeptember2015andparentswillbeinformedofanydevelopments.

Christmasisaverystressful meformanyfamiliesanditshouldbea meofgreatjoy.When


thingsgetoverwhelming,rememberthewordsoftheAngeltoMaryandtrustinthemandrecall
themo en.

ThisshallbemylastChristmasmessageforourbulle nsoIamreallyrelyinguponthesewordstoo,
trus nginthemeverydayasImoveontopasturesnewleavingthewonderfulcommunityofEnglish
MartyrsthisChristmas,butIbelieveonlyphysicallyasnobodyeverreallyleavesEnglishMartyrs.It
willalwaysremainaspecialplaceinmyheart.
MaythisChristmasbeaspecial,blessedandbeau ful mewiththoseyoulovethemost,butremembertospend mewiththeOnewhoitisallabout,withoutwhom,wewouldnthaveit!May

WithcoldertemperaturesonthewayIthoughtitwouldbeusefultoremindparentsofourproceduresregardinganyschool
closureasaresultofadverseweather.Parentsshouldbeawarethatwewilldoeverythingpossibletokeeptheschoolopen
andwewouldonlyclosetheschoolinextremelyrarecircumstances.
IfwedoneedtoclosetheschoolwewouldmaketheannouncementviaourwebsiteandviaBBCRadioTees.Thesearethe
onlywaysinwhichwewouldmakesuchanannouncementandparentsshoulddisregardamessagebyanyotherformof

EachyeartheHartlepoolArtClubrunsatownwidecompe onthatisopentoallsecondary
schoolsinthetown.Theysettwocategories:TheStephenCrowtherawardforthebestGCSE
courseworkandTheWalterParkerawardforthebestGCSEExam.Thereisalsoaspecial
awardcalledTheAtkinsonPrintTrophyforExcellencetobepresentedtothestudentshowing
themostcrea vepoten al.WearehappytoannouncethatEmilyWardgainedfirstprizefor
theStephenCrowtherawardandwasalsochosentoreceivetheAtkinsonpaintTrophyaswell!
JennyWilsonalsogainedsecondprizeinthiscategory.WearealsodelightedthatOliviaWard
gainedsecondprizefortheWalterParkeraward.TheawardswerepresentedattheHartlepoolArtgalleryonNov16that6.30pmandthegirls
received100forfirstplaceand50forsecond.

fortakingpart.Alloftheentrieswerewonderful.ThewinningentrieswereAndrea

RobynThompson9MC2whoproducedspectacularentries.Allgirlswillseetheircardsprintedprofessionallywithhernameonit
andthesecardswillbeusedbyMrLeetoposttofriendsoftheschool.Allgirlswill
receiveartequipmentfortheirwonderfulandcrea veentries.

TrenchArt100YearsCommemora on
EachyeartheCatholicPartnershipdecides
uponathemeforallArtdepartmentsto
developandcreatedierenttypesofartwork
foramajorexhibi onatDurhamCathedral.
ThisyearthethemeisAweandWonder.
Thisyearwelookedatartworkassociatedwiththe100yearremembranceofWorld
War1.Theideawastoproduce100piecesofceramicstomarkeachyearofthe
war.ToachievethiswefocussedonTrenchArt.Thiswasacollec onofempty
shellcasingsthatthesoldiersworkedintotoproducequitedecora veandpersonal
artwork.Wealsodecidedforthefirst methisyeartoinvolveeveryone:pupils,
teachers,schoolsta,andtheextendedcommunity.Everyonegoton-boardandall
workedtogethertoproducesomewonderfulpiecesofceramicsthatlookedlike
shellcasingsthathadcarvedimageryorpersonalmessagesonthem.Someofthe
workproducedistrulyremarkable.
Years8/9/10/12/13,18teachersand20membersofthecommunity
producedworkforthisproject.Weintendtoarrangeall100piecesintothe
shapeofapoppy,havethecentralpiecespaintedblackandthepoppyshaped
piecesinbronze/gold.Toaddtothiswewillalsoincludeallthepoppieswornby
thestudentsonRemembranceDay,sca eringthemthroughthework.These
poppieshavepersonalmessageswri enonthembythestudents.
Theexhibi onwillopenonthe17thJanuaryatDurhamcathedralforaprivate
viewingforthosewhotookpartinitandwillbeonpublicdisplayfor2weeks
a erthat.wefullyencourageyoutovisititasyouwillnotbedisappointed.

OnMonday17thNovemberwedisplayed
studentsoutstandingDesignandTechnology
workattheNa onalGlassCentreinSunderland.
Theinnova vedisplayformedpartofan
exhibi onofworkproducedbystudentsfromall
schoolsintheHexham&NewcastleCatholic
Partnership.Theeveningstartedwithacouple
oftalks,theneveryonewasinvitedtolook
aroundtheexhibi on,manypeoplecomplimentedthequalityandcrea vityofthework
producedbyEnglishMartyrsstudents.Duringtheeveningpeoplewereinvitedtoa end
oneoftwoglassblowingdemonstra onsandweweredelightedtohearwewouldbe
giventhebowlwehadwatchedbeingblown.Thiswasanamazingopportunityforourstudentstoshowcasetheirworkinsuchafabulousspace.
Thequalityanddiversityoftheworkwasbreath-takingandthestudents
shouldbeveryproud.

OnWednesday19thNovemberTheFoodTechnologyDepartmenthostedthisyearsCatholicPartnershipMasterchef
compe on.Afusionoffoodfromacrosstheglobefilledourkitchenassevenpairsofyoungchefstooktothestovesto
ba leoutthisyearsPartnershipMasterchef.Eachteamwasgiventwohourstoproduceatwocoursemealonabudgetof
lessthan5.Withavarietyofdishesfromallovertheworldstudentsdemonstratedexcep onalculinaryflairandsynergy,
showcasingskillsofbreadmaking,pastryworkandflavourbalancing.TheEnglishMartyrsteamofNiamhBarkerandAmy
CallaghancookedChickenrouladesurpriseservedwithlemoncouscous,courge eribbonandtomatowithgarlicsauce.For
desserttheymademeltinthemiddlechocolatepudding,servedonraspberrycouliswithacrmeanglaisesauce.
Wewerethrilledwiththeresultsasthestandardswereexcep onallyhighthisyearandallteamsproducedsomefabulous
food.Ourgirlsworkedwithenthusiasmanddetermina onandwereawarded2ndprize!WelldonetoNiamhandAmy.

OurannualLentretreattakesplaceatAmpleforthAbbeyontheweekendofPalmSundaywhichisthe27th29thMarch
2015.Thisretreatisopentostudentsineveryyeargroupandisalwaysfull!Thereare45placesandthecostis50.Ifyou

AmpleforthAbbeyisastunningmonasteryinNorthYorkshire,anditwillbetheBESTstarttotheEasterholidaysandthe

AquickupdateonourfundraisinginNovemberfortheChildreninNeedcharity.Wehadanotherfantas cweekof
fundraisingthisyearsothankyoutosta,parentsandstudentswhohavecontributedtoanyoftheac vi esthattook
place.Weraisedastaggering2925.
Thisamazingamountofmoneywascollectedthroughalotofhardworkanddedica onfromeveryoneinvolved.Ac vi es
includedasponsoredfunrun,sponsoredsilence,sponsoredlegwax,cakesales,hotdogsales,tombolasandmanymany
more.AgroupofstudentstravelledtoStocktontohandoverthechequetotheBBC.

DanielHugheswasle disappointedatmissingtheannualChildrenInNeedfunrun.Asaresultheorganisedtocompletethe
distanceatalater meintheschoolsfitnesssuitetoensurehecouldsupporttheschoolandthecharitywithhiseorts.

studentsandtheeveninggigfeaturedperformancesfromthedayandalsospecially
formedgroupsandsoloists,includingsome
specialstaappearances!Welldonetoallinvolved!

DVDsoftheshowareavailableformtheSchoolOcepriced7.00.Therearetwoop ons,Wednesdaynight
featuringAmyChapmanasDorothyandThursdayNightfeaturingGeorgiaLennonasDorothy.

HistoryLondonTrip
Thisyearwasapar cularlypoignantyearfortheHistoryLondontrip,aswewereabletoseetheclaypoppiesattheTower
ofLondontomarktheCentenaryoftheOutbreakofWorldWar1.Asusual,wethoroughlyenjoyedtheChurchillWar
cabinetsandthelondondungeons,aswellasseeingthespectacularshowWicked.Thestudentswereanabsolutecreditto
theschool,andtheylearntalotfromtheverybusytwodays!Wealreadyhaveanumberofstudentsaskingtogoagainnext
year!

BombardmentProject
OnWednesday10thDecember,agroupofY7studentsworkedwiththefolkmusicgroupTheYoungUnsinprepara onfora
performanceforlocaldignitariesattheBoroughHallonTuesday16thDecember.Studentslearnedaseriesofsongsinspired
bytheBombardmentofHartlepool100yearsago.TitlesincludeBillytheButchersboyinspiredbyalocalbutchersboy
whorantoWestHartlepoolwithtwocowsandsomesaveloyswhileHartlepoolwasbeingshelled.Thestudentsalsotook
partinsomeroleplayac vi esand4students;DanielHughes,SholaBuckle,GaryBoltonandBekkahJacksonhavebeen
selectedtoperformtheirroleplayattheBoroughHallonTuesday16thDecember.

TheChristmasDayTruce.Wewereluckyenoughtobeabletotakepartin
the100yearcommemora onsatDurhamUniversityPalaceGreenlibrarythis
December,andtook14yr8studentstothisevent.Duringtheday,wewere
abletoresearchandtakeanac veand'handson'approachtothestudyof
theoutbreakofTheGreatWar,andtheChristmasdaytrucethatoccurredon
theNoMans'LandoftheWesternFrontin1914.Studentshadafantas c
day,learningsomuchinadierentenvironment.

OnThursday11thDecember,7Y10studentsa endedarangeofcommemora veworkshopsatHartlepoolCollegeofFE.


ThemorningwasdesignedtogivestudentsadetailedunderstandingofHartlepoolsroleinWorldWarOne.Themorning
includedlecturesfromkeynotespeakers,filmandvoiceclipsofsurvivorsofthebombardmentaswellasanexamina onof
artefactsandartworkinspiredbytheWar.

OnTuesday25thNovember,sixteenofoursixthformstudentsputontheirgladragstoa endtheannualCatholic
PartnershipMediaOscars.Havinghadtheiroutstandingworknominatedbytheirteachers,RebeccaSco ,JamesIrvin,
OliviaAnderson,EmilyWard,JulianneManitandChloeHarveyallbeatos compe onfromalloftheschoolsinthe
partnership,takinghomeOscarsfortheirwork.AmberWilliamsandHannahFergusonnarrowlymissedoutonachievingan
awardfortheirmagazinefrontcoverandar cle,comingawaywithcer ficatesforhighlycommendedwork.Thewinners
weredecidedbylecturersinMediaStudiesfromtheUniversityofTeesside.

OnFriday5th,Year12andYear13hadtheirannualChristmasMarketand
Jumperday.
StudentsarrivedwearingtheirChristmasjumpers,inthehopeofbeing
judgedthebestorevengainingrecogni onfrombeingthemost
tasteless!Somejumperswerefull
ofsparklinglights,whilstothers
boastedjinglingbellsand nsel.
Somestudentsdecidedtogoone
stepfurtherandwearonesiesor
evenbringFatherChristmastolife!
Studentsworkedinformgroups
withtheirtutor,runningtheirown
crea veChristmasthemedstalltoraisefundsfortheLeaversDinner.Thestalls
includedtheopportunitytochatwithSantahimself,feastonhotturkeysandwiches,a
fes vethemedphotoboothandlotsandlotsofdeliciouscakes!
Allhadajolly meandmanagedtoraiseover600.Abigthankyoutoallinvolved.

ThisyearthefirstroundwasheldatTeessideUniversityandsaw
ourstudentsfacedwithtopicaldebatesaroundwhethersports
peoplearegoodrolemodelsandwhetherBritainshouldremain
withintheEU.Althoughweputupanadmirablefight,wewere
narrowlybeatenbyStokesleyschool,evena erwinningavote
takenbytheaudience.Wehadanotherfantas cteamthisyear
fromthosewhoagreedtospeaktothosewhoablyassistedinthe
detailedresearchandspeechesthatwerepresented.The
studentsweresuperbambassadorsforthecollege,asking
challengingques onsandreallyge ngintothespiritofthe

Monday,December1st,sawthefirsteverEnglishMartyrsSchoolSPEEDCHESSTournamentwith11studentsplayinga
seriesofgamesinStAnnesHall,withonly5minuteseachtocompletealltheirmoves.Thiswasaturbo-chargedformof
thegamewhichwasnewtomostoftheyoungcompe torsbuttheycopedwellwiththedierentdemandsofthegame
andtheextrapressureofthe ckingclock!
Intheend,itwaslastyearsmaintournamentwinner,BrandonCasey(of
Year9)whotriumphedremainingunbeatenthroughoutthea ernoon
althoughhewaspushedallthewaybymanyofhisopponentsincluding
somes llrela velynewtochessasagameletalonethemorerapid
style.PaulLee(alsoofYear9)wasaclosesecond,withaverystrong
performancefromJoeSpaldin(ofYear7).NathanLiddell-Archerwasthe
bestperformingYear8studentontheday.

PupilsfoundouthowNissanengineersareadap ngtoan
ever-changingworldandhowengineerswhostudiedtradionaltechnologiessuchaspetrol-poweredvehiclesare
nowlearningaboutelectricvehicletechnology.
Studentshadapresenta ontofindoutmoreaboutSTEM
careersanddiscoveredmoreaboutthe100%electricNissanLEAF.Theywerethentakenonatourofthe
produc onlinetoseehowthecarswerebuiltusingtheir
con nualmanufacturingandJustInTimeprocess.This
wasanamazingopportunityforyourstudentsandthey
hadawonderfulandinforma vemorning.

businessentrepreneurstolearnabouttheskillsneededto
setupandrunasuccessfulbusiness.

EDFEnergyMentoringScheme
Thisyearwehavecon nuedworkinginpartnershipwithEDFEnergyontheirmentoring
scheme.ThisisafabulousopportunityforourSixthFormstudentstobecomeinvolvedwith
localbusinessandgainexperiencefortheirfuturecareers.ThisyearsawthesecondEDFenergymentoringschemewhichwasoeredtoourScienceandMaths6thformstudents.
Theprocessinvolvedalauncheveningtointerestedstudentsandtheirparentsandthenacompe veapplica onand
interviewprocess.Eightofourstudentswereshortlistedtothesecondphaseandsevensuccessfullyappointedtothe
scheme.
Thesuccessfulcandidateswillnowpar cipateinmentoringcontactsessionswiththeEDFEnergyMentorsandhave
trainingdaysthroughouttheyearatthepowerplantinHartlepool.Thiswonderfulopportunityprovidesourstudentswith
highqualityworkexperience,employmentprepara onandworkbasedskillsalongsideaninsightintoamarketleader
industrytohelppreparethemfortheirfutureandalsopoten alforstudentstoprogressontotheirgraduatesponsorship
