AIM
MPhil/PhD in Engineering at University College London
ACADEMIC QUALIFICATIONS

2010 2015: Bachelor in Mechanical Engineering at Rio de Janeiro State University, Brazil
Performance coefficient of 80% for modules taken so far.
Final year project description: Investigation of the efficiency of artificial neural networks
(ANNs) trained with experimental data for predicting thermodynamic equilibrium
phenomena conditions. This work includes implementing, testing and optimising a range of
ANN configurations in MATLAB and validating computational results with experimental data.
Comparisons between ANNs and equations of state using minimization of Gibbs energy will
also be made in order to assess the accuracy of both methods in computing equilibrium
parameters. The expected outputs are obtaining an optimal ANN configuration for the
proposed thermodynamic mixture, investigating the performance of the available training
methods for ANNs, and assessing the feasibility of using parallel computing for that
application.
Supervisor: Dr Gustavo Mendes Platt, Rio de Janeiro State University

2013/2014: Year Abroad at the University of Sheffield, United Kingdom

Awarded a scholarship of 14,840 per annum plus full tuition fees paid by the Brazilian
Ministry for Science, Technology and Innovation.
Averaged a 2:1 class degree classification for modules taken.
Successfully undertook final year BEng and MEng Mechanical Engineering modules, as well
as BSc Computer Science and BSc Mathematics modules.

RESEARCH EXPERIENCE

July 2014 September 2014: Modelling and Optimisation of Underwater Ultrasonic Acoustic
Sensors for the water industry

Worked as a Research Assistant (grade 6) at The University of Sheffield. Modelled and

simulated an existing underwater ultrasonic acoustic sensor manufactured by an industrial
partner. This work aimed to optimise energy usage through changes in components
dimensions and refined selection of materials. Investigations on piezoelectricity, acousticstructure interaction, and finite element theory were carried out. A finite element modelling
approach was made using COMSOL Multiphysics.
Key skills: Computational modelling, physical modelling, data processing, technical drawing,
finite element techniques, analysis of material properties. Supervisor: Professor Kirill
Horoshenkov, University of Sheffield.

March 2013 August 2013: Supervised Study of Nonlinear Partial Differential Equations for
Mechanical Engineering Applications

Investigated analytic and numerical solution methods for nonlinear partial differential
equations and their applications in conservation laws and shock waves. First-order quasilinear and nonlinear equations were covered. Project undertaken voluntarily to pursue
interests in mathematical problem-solving. Work had to be interrupted for year abroad in
Sheffield.
Key skills: Mathematical modelling and problem solving. Supervisor: Dr. Nlio Henderson,
Rio de Janeiro State University.

March 2011 October 2012: Numerical Analysis on Non-Linear Problems for Chemical
Engineering

Started working at Laboratrio de Termodinmica e Otimizao (Laboratory of

Thermodynamics and Optimisation) as a voluntary research assistant in March of 2011, then
in October of 2011 was awarded a Scientific Initiation research grant by Fundao Carlos
Chagas Filho de Amparo Pesquisa do Estado do Rio de Janeiro (FAPERJ) which also funded
the project. Helped in developing computational methodologies for solving and studying
chemical and phase equilibrium problems such as double retrograde vaporisation and
azeotropic conditions calculation. New hyper heuristics and modifications of classical
numerical methodologies were used to carry out studies on global and local optimisation.

Key skills: Numerical analysis and computational modelling. Supervisor: Dr. Gustavo
Mendes Platt, Rio de Janeiro State University.

TEACHING EXPERIENCE

March 2012 September 2013: Centro de Cincias e Educao Superior a Distncia do Estado
do Rio de Janeiro CECIERJ, Pr-Vestibular Social PVS
Taught mathematics for final year high-school students. Responsibilities included planning and
teaching lessons, attending courses and meetings for teacher-training, writing a weekly report
discussing students overall performance on each subject and proposing educational methodologies
to improve their learning experience. Due to the social aspect of the course, each teacher was
responsible for supervising a small group of students in their preparations for exams. The
supervision included writing a monthly report discussing the students strengths, weaknesses and
helping them in organising their studies.
Only mathematics teacher of 2012 to score 10/10 in practical teaching exams assessed by
committee of three professors: Dr. Fbio Henrique Teixeira de Souza, Dr.Victor Giraldo and
Dr. Carmen Maria Costa de Carvalho.

PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE
