Performance Advisor could not recognize the Real Time Server on the
host agent <host agent name>. This could be due to the Real Time Server
not running on the selected host agent or the host agent name is not
found.
Error occurred while connecting to Real Time Server. This could be due
to the Real Time Server not running on the host agent, or the same host
agent is already being used for real time collection by another instance
of Performance Advisor.

Cause
It may be due to the following reasons:
Real-time service is not running on the selected host agent.
P9000 Performance Advisor host agent is not responding to your requests, as the specified host
name does not exist.

14

Troubleshooting P9000 Performance Advisor issues

Check if another user accessing the same management station has triggered another real-time
performance data collection. If you try to connect to a host agent that is already collecting the
real-time data initiated through another instance of P9000 Performance Advisor, the existing
connection is discontinued and the above-mentioned error message is displayed.

Resolution
To overcome the issue, perform the following steps:
1.

Verify if the real-time server (HP P9000 Performance Advisor RealTime Server) is running on the
host. Restart the service if it has stopped.
For P9000 Performance Advisor Real-time to run, the management station (MS) must be able to
ping the host agent (HA) using the hostname(FQDN) of the HA.

2.

Verify if the host agent name displayed in P9000 Performance Advisor is correct. It appears in
the HostAgent list on the RealTimeChart screen.
You can also ping the host agent to check if it is responding to your requests. The host agent
name should be the same as displayed under HostAgent in the RealTimeChart screen.
Also, verify if there is a correct mapping of the IP address to the host name. You can find this
mapping information in the <Install_drive>:\Windows\System32\drivers\etc\hosts
file on your management station. If the mapping between the IP address and the corresponding
host name is incorrect, edit the hosts file to replace the existing IP address with the new one
and save the changes. Ensure that the IP address and the host name are separated by a space.

Unaligned access warning when starting or stopping P9000 Performance Advisor

Linux host agent services
After installing P9000 Performance Advisor Linux host agent, you might observe the following
Unaligned access to warning when starting or stopping the host agent services.

Cause

1.

After the upgrade, download the host agents from the Support screen of P9000 Performance
Advisor and upgrade them on the respective hosts.
For a Linux host agent, remove the existing version of the host agent software from the Linux hosts
pointing to the management station before upgrading the management station version.
NOTE:
Check the required version of RMLIB is installed.

2.
3.

Perform one round of configuration and then the performance data collections for the disk arrays
connected to these host agents.
Verify if the host agents are appearing in the Host Information table in P9000 Performance Advisor.
Ensure that software versions of P9000 Performance Advisor management station and the host
agent are the same.

Cause
An incorrect port number is specified for P9000 Performance Advisor and host agent communication.
In such a case, the installation process completes but the Connection refused error message
appears when the host agent tries to establish connection with P9000 Performance Advisor.

Resolution
Verifying the HP StorageWorks P9000 Performance Advisor Tomcat service.

20

Troubleshooting P9000 Performance Advisor issues

Manually verify if the HP StorageWorks P9000 Performance Advisor Tomcat service is active on the
management station. If the service has stopped, try to restart the service by following these steps:
1.

Select Start > Run and type services.msc.

The Services dialog box appears.

2.

Right-click HP StorageWorks P9000 Performance Advisor Tomcat service and select Start from
the drop-down list.

If you have configured the HP StorageWorks P9000 Performance Advisor Monitor service to
automatically restart the tomcat service, it tries to restart the tomcat service for the retry count you
specified in the PAMonitor_mail.properties file available in the <Install_drive>:\HPSS\
paMonitor\conf folder on your management station. Then, it sends an email notification that
describes whether the restart tomcat service was a success or a failure. For more information on
configuring the HP StorageWorks P9000 Performance Advisor Monitor service to restart the tomcat
service, see the HP StorageWorks P9000 Performance Advisor Software User Guide.
Specify the correct HTTP port number of the management station in the paxp_service.properties file.
On the management station, manually replace the existing port number:
1.

Look for the following tag in the server.xml and manually replace the existing port number
with the new port number:
<Connector port="Existing_port_num" protocol="HTTP/1.1"
connectionTimeout="20000" redirectPort="443"/>

The server.xml is available in the <Installation_Drive>:\HPSS\pa\tomcat\conf

folder on your management station.
2.

Restart the HP StorageWorks P9000 Performance Advisor Tomcat service.

On the host agent, manually update the new port number of the management station:
1.

On a Windows host, open the paxp_service.properties file from the <Installation_Drive>:\Program Files\Hewlett-Packard\xppa\hostagent\config folder
on your host system. If it is a custom install location, the file is available in the <Installation_Drive>:\<Installation_Directory>\hostagent\config folder.
On a UNIX host, open the paxp_service.properties file from the <Installation_Drive>:\opt\xppa\hostagent\config folder.
On an OpenVMS host, open the paxp_service.properties file from the SYS$COMMON:[HEWLETTPACKARD.P9000HOSTSW.HOSTAGENT.LOG] folder.

2.

Replace the existing port number in the http.port field with the new port number of the management station with which your host agent should communicate.
Following is a sample paxp_service.properties file in which the ManagementStation.Hostname shows 01.01.01.01 as the management station IP address and http.port
shows port 80:
#com.hp.xpsl.hostagent.HostAgent
######################################################################
ManagementStation.Hostname=01.01.01.01
#
On startup, if missing or empty value, then system uses the
#
value in the xpmgmtstationaddress.prp file.
# Protocol:
#
http (default) or https. Fix at startup
http.port: 80
#
http port of the management station. This will be provided
#
during installation

3.

Restart the host agent services.

Array type not seen in P9000Watch

Cause
If the array type for a particular DKC serial number is not displayed in P9000Watch, it might be due
to the command device being non-functional or not created.

Resolution
To verify, run getxpperf with the command device name.
For example: ./getxpperf /dev/rdisk/c0d0t1, where /dev/rdisk/c0d0t1 is the command
device name.
For Windows host agent, the getxpperf tool is present in the <Installation_directory>:\
xppa\hostagent\sbin folder.
For non-Windows host agent, the getxpperf tool is present in the \opt\xppa\hostagent\sbin
folder.
If you see errors related to the command device, such as the Attach command error, it implies that
the command device is corrupted and needs to be recreated.

Classpath error
Cause
Unable to initialize threads: cannot find class java/lang/Thread Could not create Java VM.

Resolution
Problem:
Earlier versions of the P9000 Performance Advisor LUI required the user to set some
environment variables. This error message indicates that the classpath environment variable was not
set correctly. (This error must not occur with new install scripts.) Report this error directly to your HP
contact.

Install script exits with an error

Cause
Install script exits with the message: 'JRE was not found in path <jre_location>. This is because, the
location entered for the java environment is not valid.

Resolution
In UNIX variants, execute install.sh and enter the correct path to the java environment. In
Windows, edit the JAVA_HOME environment variable, and run the install.bat script again.

Cause
Install script exits with the message: 'install.sh: this script must be run as root....exiting'. This is because,
you are not logged in as the root user.

Resolution
Log in as root, and run install.sh again.

Multiprocessor optimization
For efficient and optimized use of the management station hardware on a multi-processor or a multi-core
system, bind the HP StorageWorks P9000 Performance Advisor Tomcat and HP StorageWorks P9000
Performance Advisor Database services to individual processors. Therefore, leading to better response
load balancing and avoiding any overheads of switching, or scheduling on multiple processors.
To enable multiprocessor optimization, you must modify the property for multiprocessor optimization
in the serverparameters.properties file. By default, multiprocessor optimization is not enabled
or switched off for P9000 Performance Advisor.
Multiprocessor optimizations #
# The following entry enables / disables the Multiprocessor Optimizations.
# Note: Valid Input = ON|OFF
Enable_MP_Optimizations=ON

42

Troubleshooting P9000 Performance Advisor issues

You can enable this option if you find that the P9000 Performance Advisor performance is slow on
the management station. Dedicate a processor each for the HP StorageWorks P9000 Performance
Advisor Tomcat and HP StorageWorks P9000 Performance Advisor Database services. Upon restarting
the management station, the HP StorageWorks P9000 Performance Advisor Tomcat service is
considered on priority and bound to a processor followed by the Oracle process.
To improve P9000 Performance Advisor performance on a multi-processor or a multi-core system, HP
recommends enabling multiprocessor optimization as the first step. However, if you do not see any
significant performance improvement even after enabling multiprocessor optimization, HP suggests
you restore the default settings in the serverparameters.properties file and contact HP support.
NOTE:
If you set the Enable_MP_Optimizations=ON, manually change the affinity set from the Windows
Task Manager (under Processes tab, right click a process and select Set Affinity). After restarting
the management station, both the P9000 Performance Advisor performance Tomcat and Oracle
services get executed on the processor that is selected manually. This override the property set for
multiprocessor optimization in the serverparameters.properties file. When the management
station is restarted again, the value is read from theserverparameters.properties file, and
the services are run on different processors.

Maintaining versions for host agent logs

You can maintain a minimum of three versions of the P9000 Performance Advisor host agent log file
(PerformanceAdvisorXP.log) for your reference in troubleshooting host agent issues. This is
applicable on all the supported operating platforms for P9000 Performance Advisor host agents.
In the paxp_services.properties file, specify the number of versions you want to maintain
against the Logger.NoOfFiles field. By default, a maximum of three log files are maintained.
When the log file is created, the date and time stamp of the log file gets appended to the
PerformanceAdvisorXP.log file name. Following is the file naming convention:
<yyyy-mm-dd_hh-mm-ss>_PerformanceAdvisorXP.log.
When the number of files and the specified size for each of the files have reached the maximum set
limit, the log file with the oldest date and time stamp is deleted, and a new file with the present date
and time is created.
In thepaxp_services.properties file, you can also set the minimum file size by specifying the
value for the Logger.LogFileSize field. By default, 100MB is the minimum file size. The file size
value can either be appended by MB or GB. If you choose to see the file size in GB, the minimum
file size be 1GB. If the log file size grows beyond this specified value, the data being written into the
existing log file is brought to a logical conclusion and another version of the log file is automatically
created.
NOTE:
The host agent service need not be restarted for any of the above-mentioned modifications made to
the paxp_services.properties file.

4 Frequently Asked Questions

P9000 Performance Advisor Licensing
Where do I find the P9000 Performance Advisor registration number for generating a permanent license?
The P9000 Performance Advisor registration number is included on the product entitlement certificate
that is provided with every P9000 Performance Advisor License To USE (LTU) you purchase.

How do I generate the permanent license?

You can generate the permanent license at the Hewlett-Packard Authorization Center (HPAC) license
key website, using the following URL: webkey.external.hp.com
For P9000 Performance Advisor to continue configuration collection for additional internal raw disk
capacities on your XP disk arrays or usable capacities on your P9000 disk arrays, you should install
permanent licenses on P9000 Performance Advisor for each of the XP and P9000 disk arrays.

Can I generate the Instant-on license at the HPAC license key website?
No. You cannot generate the Instant-on license at the HPAC license key website. It is only available
along with the P9000 Performance Advisor media and automatically activated when you install P9000
Performance Advisor (v4.5 onwards).

If I add 20 TB to the existing 64 TB internal raw disk capacity on my XP disk

array, should I procure additional license for P9000 Performance Advisor to
monitor the newly added 20 TB internal raw disk capacity?
Monitoring internal raw disk capacity of 64 TB and greater is considered as unlimited frame license
by P9000 Performance Advisor. Therefore, you need not generate a separate license for P9000
Performance Advisor to monitor any newly added internal raw disk capacity.

Are the array type and serial number sufficient to generate a license for an XP
or a P9000 disk array?
Yes. These are a few mandatory inputs for generating a license. In addition, you should also provide
the internal raw disk capacity for an XP disk array or the usable capacity for a P9000 disk array that
you want to be monitored, and the expiry date for the license (based on the type of license that you
select).

HP StorageWorks P9000 Performance Advisor Software Frequently Asked Questions

53

The following warning message is displayed in the Array Performance report

that I generated. What does it indicate?
WARNING: License violation was detected for this array.
This report may not capture performance data about the
recent configuration changes made in the XP/P9000 disk
array. Please purchase the required Performance Advisor
licenses immediately.
This warning message is displayed in every report that you generate for an XP or a P9000 disk array,
when both the following conditions are met:
Grace period of 60 days expires
Permanent license of the required internal raw disk capacity for an XP disk array or the usable
capacity for a P9000 disk array is not installed
You must purchase, generate, and install a permanent license, equal to the XP disk arrays internal
raw capacity or the P9000 disk array's usable capacity, if you want P9000 Performance Advisor to
monitor the new configuration changes for the XP or the P9000 disk array.

I have not received the product entitlement certificate and the registration number
along with the P9000 Performance Advisor v4.5 media kit. What should be the
process followed to get the product registration number after an upgrade to v4.5
or later version?
In order to receive the product entitlement certificate and the registration number, complete the following
steps:
1.

2.

Enter the required information in the P9000 Performance Advisor License Entitlement
Request text file. By default, the P9000 Performance Advisor License Entitlement
Request text file is located in the %HPSS_HOME%\data\keys folder, if you have upgraded to
P9000 Performance Advisor v4.5. HP uses the information from this text file to process the registration number request.
Send an email to HP at americas_password@cnd.hp.com requesting a registration number for
the P9000 Performance Advisor LTUs that you are entitled to use. Provide the P9000 Performance Advisor License Entitlement Request text file as an attachment to your email.

Can I use the same registration number to generate permanent licenses for multiple XP or P9000 disk arrays?
No. Registration numbers can only be used one time. The P9000 Performance Advisor entitlement
certificate is generic. You can use the registration number included in the entitlement certificate to
generate a permanent license for any XP or P9000 disk array serial number. After the registration
number is associated with a specific XP or P9000 disk array serial number, it cannot be further
associated with another XP or P9000 disk array serial number.

Can I use the license key that is generated for an XP or P9000 disk array to
monitor another array?
No. When a license key is generated, it is locked to the specific XP or P9000 disk array hardware
platform and serial number; it cannot be used with another XP or P9000 disk array.

54

Frequently Asked Questions

I have generated and installed a permanent frame license for a new XP or P9000
disk array. Why does the P9000 Performance Advisor License screen not display
the corresponding license details?
The corresponding license details are not displayed on the P9000 Performance Advisor License screen,
because you have not performed a configuration data collection for the new XP or P9000 disk array
(unmonitored XP or P9000 disk array). Perform a configuration data collection for your XP or P9000
disk array to view the license details in the View License Status section on the License screen.

How can I obtain a term or emergency licenses?

Contact your HP Representative. Term and emergency licenses are used in exception cases only.

Can a combination of permanent, term, and emergency licenses be used for an

XP or P9000 disk array?
Yes. You can use a combination of the above mentioned license types for an XP or P9000 disk array,
as P9000 Performance Advisor maintains an aggregate of the licensed capacity. The License screen
shows expiry dates for different types of licenses that you may have associated with an XP or P9000
disk array.

Can a term license key be installed for an XP or P9000 disk array when an
emergency license key is already installed for that array?
Yes. You can install a term license key when an emergency license key is already installed for that
array.

Where can I view the individual license details?

Click View Details for an XP or P9000 disk array record on the License screen to view the associated
individual license details in the View License Detail section.

What does permitted volumes mean? Should it be the same as licensed capacity?
No. Permitted Volumes displayed in the View License Detail section for a specific XP or P9000 disk
array are not the same as the Licensed Capacity. Permitted Volumes refers to the capacity of a single
license key. The aggregate of the permitted volumes is displayed as the actual license capacity (TB).
For example, consider that there is a permanent license and a term license installed on a given XP or
P9000 disk array. The permitted volumes (TB) installed are 20 TB and 24 TB respectively. In this case,
the actual license capacity (TB) is calculated as 44 TB.

If two term licenses are generated to monitor 36 TB and additional 10 TB for

an XP disk array, and the 10 TB disk capacity is later removed from the XP disk
array, will P9000 Performance Advisor stop monitoring the 10 TB data even
when the term license for 10 TB is still valid?
Yes. P9000 Performance Advisor stops collecting performance data for the additional 10 TB disk
capacity, as it is physically removed from the XP disk array. It continues to collect performance data
for only the current disk capacity, which is 36 TB. However, you can still view historic data that was
maintained when P9000 Performance Advisor was collecting performance data for the 10 TB disk
capacity.

HP StorageWorks P9000 Performance Advisor Software Frequently Asked Questions

55

When does P9000 Performance Advisor enter the grace period for an XP or
P9000 disk array?
P9000 Performance Advisor initiates a grace period of 60 days when either of the following conditions
is met:
During Instant-on period (first time upgrade or installation of P9000 Performance Advisor v4.5 or
later version):
The Instant-on license period of 120 days is over and a permanent license is not yet installed
for any of the XP or P9000 disk arrays. In this case, P9000 Performance Advisor initiates a
grace period of 60 days on all the XP and P9000 disk arrays
You have installed a permanent license on P9000 Performance Advisor for at least one XP or
P9000 disk array during the Instant-on period. In this case, P9000 Performance Advisor initiates
a grace period of 60 days on all the other XP or P9000 disk arrays
After the Instant-on period is over:
Every time your XP disk array raw disk capacity or the P9000 usable capacity exceeds the P9000
Performance Advisor licensed capacity (which is a summation of permanent, term, and emergency
licenses that you may have installed for that array)

If additional raw disk capacity is added to an XP disk array or usable capacity

is added to a P9000 disk array during the grace period, will Performance Advisor
monitor the additional capacities and perform new configuration data collections
for the XP or P9000 disk array during the grace period?
Yes. During the grace period, you can monitor an XP disk array for unlimited internal raw disk capacity
and a P9000 disk array for unlimited usable capacity. You can also collect configuration data for
the additional internal raw disk and usable capacities. This is possible only until the date the grace
period is valid.

If additional disk capacity is added to an XP disk array after the grace period
is over, will Performance Advisor monitor the additional disk capacity and perform new configuration data collections?
No. P9000 Performance Advisor does not monitor any new configuration changes made for your XP
disk arrays after the grace period is over and if required licenses are not yet installed. However, it
continues to collect performance data for the current internal raw disk capacities of your XP disk
arrays.

Is grace period applicable for term and emergency license types?

Yes. The grace period of 60 days is also applicable for term and emergency license types. After a
term or an emergency license expires, P9000 Performance Advisor enters a grace period of 60 days
for all the associated XP or P9000 disk arrays.

If the current version of P9000 Performance Advisor is upgraded to v5.0, is the

Instant-on license activated after the upgrade is complete?
Yes. The Instant-on license is available with P9000 Performance Advisor v5.0. By default, it is activated
when you perform a first time installation or an upgrade to v5.0

56

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the Instant-on license bound to an XP or P9000 disk array?

No. The Instant-on license is provided with every instance of P9000 Performance Advisor and is
applicable to all the XP or P9000 disk arrays that are monitored by the current instance of P9000
Performance Advisor.

What is the indication that a license is installed on P9000 Performance Advisor?

After you install the .dat file and do a fresh configuration collection for the XP or P9000 disk array,
the associated details are displayed in the View License Status section on the License screen. The Last
Updated Time is also an indication that a new license is installed on P9000 Performance Advisor.

If I install a license for internal raw disk capacity of 50 TB and currently only 25
TB is being monitored, will P9000 Performance Advisor monitor the extra 25
TB when added to the XP disk array at a later date?
Yes. P9000 Performance Advisor monitors the additional 25 TB internal raw disk capacity whenever
you add it to your XP disk array, as the existing license key is generated for a 50 TB license capacity
(includes the extra 25 TB disk capacity).

One of the licenses was accidentally deleted from the management station for
one of the P9500 Disk Arrays? Following are the questions:
1.

Will P9000 Performance Advisor stop collecting data for the P9500 Disk Array?
No. P9000 Performance Advisor continues to collect data for all the P9500 Disk Arrays. However,
P9000 Performance Advisor enters a grace period for the P9500 Disk Array, for which the license
was deleted.

2.

Can I reinstall my original license key?

Yes. Your original license key can be reinstalled and P9000 Performance Advisor will be licensed
for the original license capacity.

3.

Can I generate a duplicate license at the HPAC web site? How do I obtain my original license
key file?
Yes. You can reprint your license and obtain your original license key file at the HPAC website
by following these steps:
a. Access the HPAC license key website, webkey.external.hp.com from your Internet browser.
The Hewlett-Packard Authorization Center license key web page appears.
b. To reprint the license certificates, click Reprint License Certificates on the Main Menu page.
c. On the Reprint License page, enter your P9500 Disk Array DKC serial number, choose the
Hardware Platform, and click Next.
The list of the license keys associated with your P9500 Disk Array DKC serial number appears
in a table on the Reprint License List page.
d.
e.

To view individual license certificates, look for your product title under Software title in the
table. Your product title should be HP StorageWorks P9000 Performance Advisor Software.
Select your software title record and click Next. A list of products associated with the license
certificate is shown on the Certificate page.
NOTE:
The list should match with the products you have purchased for that specific software title.

Yes. You can move licenses between management stations. The license validity is fixed at the time of
generating the license and is not tied to the movement of licenses between the management stations.
NOTE:
The above mentioned is valid only if both the management stations are monitoring the same P9000
disk array.

What is internal raw disk capacity? Is it applicable for only XP disk arrays?
Yes. The internal raw disk capacity is applicable only for XP disk arrays. It refers to the total capacity
of all the RAID groups created on your XP disk array. However, it excludes the disk capacity occupied
by the external RAID groups and pool volumes, such as ThP pools, virtual volumes.

What is usable capacity? Is it applicable for XP disk arrays?

The usable capacity is applicable only for P9500 disk arrays and calculated as follows: Allocated
total LDEVs capacity + unallocated total LDEVs capacity + reserved capacity.
The usable capacity includes the following:
Allocated internal LDEVs (allocated total LDEVs capacity)
Unallocated internal LDEVs (unallocated total LDEVs capacity)
Pool volumes, such as ThP, snapshot, and journal volumes (reserved capacity)

P9000 Performance Advisor database management

What is the maximum permitted size of the database that I must consider while
manually increasing the size of the database?
The maximum database size that you can select is 320 GB. This is possible when the Auto Grow
check box is not selected on the Database Configure screen. Every time, you select a database
number from the Configured Maximum Database Size list on the Database Configure screen, the
allocated disk space increments by the number you select.
For example, if the maximum database size was earlier set to 9 GB and you select 17 GB from the
list, the database size increments by 8 GB. Therefore, additional 8 GB disk space is allocated for the
P9000 Performance Advisor database.

I have manually increased the database size by 1 GB and around the same
time, auto purge process has set in. Can I stop the auto purge in-between the
purge cycle?
No. Once the auto purge has set in, you cannot stop the process. You should wait for the purge to
complete and then resume your operations.

HP StorageWorks P9000 Performance Advisor Software Frequently Asked Questions

59

Is there an indication on when the P9000 Performance Advisor database should

be archived? Should I wait for the database to grow to X size before it can be
archived?
Currently, there is no indication for deciding when the database must be archived. However, you
can use the following as a rule of thumb to archive data:
Auto purge starts when the database size has reached 70% of the allocated disk space and the Auto
Grow check box is not selected on the Database Configure screen. Auto purge begins by purging
the oldest records in the P9000 Performance Advisor database. Therefore, if your data is among the
oldest records and you want to archive the data, you must do so before the database size reaches
70% of the allocated disk space.

When the Auto Grow check box is selected, will the database size increase only
when it reaches 70% of the allocated disk space?
Yes. When the Auto Grow check box is selected on the Database Configure screen, and the database
grows to 70% of the allocated disk space, Performance Advisor automatically checks for the available
disk space. If it is greater than 3 GB, Performance Advisor increases the database size by 2 GB. If
the available disk space is less than 3 GB, the Auto Grow box is automatically disabled. Appropriate
messages are logged on the Event Log screen.
Auto Grow option will work only if sufficient free disk space is available on your management station.
You can determine the free disk space based on the following calculation: [Disk space reserved
for DB - (space occupied by DB + 2 GB)]. The disk space that is available as per this
calculation is what Auto Grow requires to start increasing the database size automatically. For
example, assume that the disk space reserved for the database is 50 GB and the disk space occupied
by the database is 30 GB. As per the above mentioned formula, the calculation will be [50 GB
(30 GB + 2 GB)], which results in 18 GB of free disk space. So, in this case, for Auto Grow to work,
it will require 18 GB of free disk space.

How can I determine the free disk space that is required for Auto Grow to function
properly?
Refer to the answer provided for the FAQ When the Auto Grow check box is selected, will the
database size increase only when it reaches 70% of the allocated disk space?

Can purged data be recovered?

No. Purged data cannot be recovered, as it is permanently deleted and the free disk space released
back to the P9000 Performance Advisor database. If you want to retain a copy of the data that is
being purged, archive the data for the duration of your choice before the manual or auto purge
process begins.

Do the purge and database archival options function the same on the P9000
Performance Advisor database?
No. Manual purge or auto purge processes delete the data completely. Database archival process
takes a backup of the data in a .dmp file and then deletes the same data from the P9000 Performance
Advisor database.

60

Frequently Asked Questions

Does purging or archiving of data also lead to defragmentation of the allocated

disk space?
It depends on the P9000 Performance Advisor version that is installed on your management station:
In P9000 Performance Advisor versions prior to v3.5, purging of data does not explicitly defragment
the allocated disk space. If you want to reduce the database size after purging, you must use the
DefragmentDB.bat file and complete the following steps to reduce the database size:
1.
2.
3.
4.
5.

Stop all the P9000 Performance Advisor services (Start -> Programs -> HP Storageworks ->
Stop services).
In the command prompt on your management station, go to the folder %PADB_HOME%\tools
and execute DefragmentDB.bat.
When the command is executing, the ssdebug.log messages appear in a pop-up window,
till the process of database size reduction is complete.
Verify the database size in the folder, %PADB_HOME%.
Start the P9000 Performance Advisor services (Start -> Programs -> HP Storageworks -> Start
services).

In P9000 Performance Advisor versions v3.5 through v3.5.2, purging or archiving of data does
not automatically defragment the allocated disk space.
In P9000 Performance Advisor v4.0, auto purging of data automatically defragments the allocated
disk space, so that the free space is released back to the database.
In P9000 Performance Advisor v4.5 onwards, auto purging or archiving of data automatically
defragments the allocated disk space, so that the free space is released back to the database.

When will auto purge set in?

Auto purge sets in when the following conditions are met:
Data storage exceeds 70% of the database size and the Auto Grow check box is not selected on
the Database Configure screen.
The Auto Grow check box is selected. However, adequate free disk space is not available in the
P9000 Performance Advisor database or on the management station.
The database has grown to 320GB, which is the maximum size limit.

What happens if P9000 Performance Advisor is collecting data for an XP or a

P9000 disk array, for which records are simultaneously being purged? Will
there be discrepancy noticed in the data that is displayed on the P9000 Performance Advisor screens?
It depends on the kind of purge that is initiated:
If it is a manual purge and the data being collected falls in the date range older than the date that
you have selected for purging, you may see discrepancy in the data being displayed on the P9000
Performance Advisor screens.
If it is a manual purge for an XP or a P9000 disk array, all the data collected till the current collection time is purged.
If it is an auto purge, the latest data is still displayed on the P9000 Performance Advisor screens.
Consider the following scenarios:
Case1: The purge start date is provided as the immediate next day for the manual purge to begin.
You may see discrepancy in the data that is displayed on the P9000 Performance Advisor screens,

HP StorageWorks P9000 Performance Advisor Software Frequently Asked Questions

61

as the data older than the selected start date will be purged for all the XP and P9000 disk arrays
connected to the management station. This is because the manual purge process is initiated on a
specific date and not for a specific XP or P9000 disk array.
Case2: Manual purge is initiated for an XP or a P9000 disk array for which data collections are
in progress. You may see discrepancy in the data that is displayed on the P9000 Performance
Advisor screens, as the data collected till that particular date and time is purged for that XP or a
P9000 disk array.
Case3: Auto purge has started. In this case, the latest data is still displayed on the P9000 Performance Advisor screens. You will not see discrepancy in the data that is displayed on the P9000
Performance Advisor screens, as auto purge process deletes the oldest records first in the P9000
Performance Advisor database.

Should I import data back into only that management station from where the
data was initially exported?
You can import data onto any other management station that has the same version of P9000
Performance Advisor installed.

Can I stop the auto purge that is in progress and archive the P9000 Performance
Advisor database?
No. You cannot stop an auto purge process after it has begun. Therefore, it is recommended that you
archive the data (if required) before the auto purge begins.

For import to work, the .dmp files should be available in the same dpdump folder
(%HPSS_HOME%\padb\admin\PADB\dpdump\) on the management station.
Does this mean that the .dmp files should be available at the above mentioned
location on the management station, where the import activity is planned?
Yes, it is mandatory that the folder location be the same as the above specified on the management
station, where the import activity is planned.

After data is imported, should the configuration data collection be reinitiated

for all the XP and P9000 disk arrays, for which the data has been imported?
Yes, you must re-initiate configuration data collections for all the XP and P9000 disk arrays, for which
the data has been imported. Re-initiating the configuration data collections ensure that the configuration
data records of the respective XP and P9000 disk arrays are updated with the latest configuration
changes.

I have archived the P9000 Performance Advisor v3.5.2 data before I upgraded
it to v4.0. Can I import the P9000 Performance Advisor v3.5.2 data back to
the same management station after the upgrade is complete?
No. You cannot import data from a previous version of P9000 Performance Advisor into the current
version after an upgrade. The import succeeds only when both the versions of P9000 Performance
Advisor are the same.
However, you can first import the v3.5.2 data onto another management station and then upgrade
it to v4.0.

62

Frequently Asked Questions

During the upgrade, can I move or copy the P9000 Performance Advisor database folders to a different location on the same or a different management station?
No. HP recommends that the P9000 Performance Advisor database folders remain untouched, as
P9000 Performance Advisor uses the files in these folders for the upgrade to complete. The folders
not being available can lead to data corruption, permanent data loss, and upgrade failure.

Can the database size be reduced using DefragmentDB.bat?

No. DefragmentDB.bat was provided prior to P9000 Performance Advisor v3.5 for the purpose
of defragmenting the SOLID database space. It cannot be used to defragment the Oracle database,
which is provided with P9000 Performance Advisor, v3.5 onwards.

Why do I see reducing of free space in PADB Drive?

There might be increase in the size of following files, if there are more database operations:
Export/Import
Purge
Auto Purge
Backup and Restore operations.
In such scenarios, the UNDOTBS2.DBF and Temp.DBF will increase to a maximum of 32 GB.

During upgrade, what should be the available free disk space for the upgrade
to complete?
It depends on the P9000 Performance Advisor version:
If you are upgrading P9000 Performance Advisor from a pre 3.5 version to v3.5 or later, following
is the requirement: 10 GB free space on the hard drive (minimum), 32 GB free disk drive space
(for cache swap space and database) (NTFS)
If you are upgrading P9000 Performance Advisor from a v3.5 or later version to v4.5, at least
2GB free disk space is recommended

I manually purged the database when the system disk space on the management
station was showing low. Then, I verified if the purge was successful by plotting
performance graphs for the specific purge duration. However, the system disk
space of the management station is still showing low and I am unable to do a
configuration collection. What has happened to the disk space that got released
when the data was purged?
Even though the P9000 Performance Advisor database space is released, this disk space can only
be used for Oracle database activities and cannot be used by other system resources. You can do
the following to reinitiate the configuration data collections:
If the drive where P9000 Performance Advisor is installed contains any non-P9000 Performance
Advisor related data, move that data to another drive location or delete the non-P9000 Performance
Advisor data.
If the drive where P9000 Performance Advisor is installed contains only P9000 Performance Advisor
related data, complete the following steps:

Is there a procedure to downgrade the P9000 Performance Advisor database?

For example, if P9000 Performance Advisor was upgraded from v3.5.2 to v4.1,
can the database be downgraded to v3.5.2?
No. There is no procedure to downgrade the P9000 Performance Advisor after upgrading it to a
later version. However, you can consider the following workaround before upgrading the current
version of P9000 Performance Advisor to a later version:
1.
2.
3.

Use the Backup utility to take a backup of the current version of P9000 Performance Advisor
database, which is v3.5.2 in this scenario.
Upgrade to P9000 Performance Advisor v4.1. If the upgrade does not complete, you can roll
back to v3.5.2 or re-install v3.5.2.
Restore the v3.5.2 P9000 Performance Advisor database back on the management station.

Can I rename the files created during the P9000 Performance Advisor database
export activity?
No. Do not modify the names of the files created during the export activity. Performance Advisor uses
these file names to identify the files from which data needs to be imported. If you happen to modify
the file names, it will lead to failure in the import process and permanent data loss.

If I am accessing the management station over the web, where the import should
happen, what should be done before initiating the import activity?
Before initiating the import activity, complete the following steps:
1.

Copy the .dmp files from the source management station to the following location on the target
management station: %HPSS_HOME%\padb\admin\PADB\dpdump\

2.

Share the dpdump folder on the target management station.

3.

Map a network drive on your local system to the dpdump share folder on the target management
station. This is to ensure that you select the correct files for the import activity.
When you start the import operation, browse to the mapped network drive folder and select the
.dmp files, and continue with the import activity.

4.

What is the minimum disk space required on the management station where the
import activity is planned?
To start an import activity, Performance Advisor requires that there be adequate disk space that at
least matches the size of the exported data. The import operation will fail if the database does not
have sufficient disk space to accommodate the imported data. You either have to archive or purge
some of the existing data for the import to begin.

64

Frequently Asked Questions

The auto purge started when the data was being imported. Will I lose the imported data?
Auto purge begins if the data storage exceeds 70% of the available disk size. If you are importing
data when the auto purge is in progress, the data import activity continues. However, if the imported
data is among the oldest data that Performance Advisor has selected for purging, the data that is
being imported is purged automatically. As a result, it is recommended that there be enough disk
space on the management station, where the data import activity is initiated.

Does database backup, restore and reset work in all versions of P9000 Performance Advisor?
In P9000 Performance Advisor versions prior to 3.5, you can backup, restore and also reset SOLID
database. Following are the procedures:
To backup the SOLID database:
1.

At the command prompt, enter cd ...%PADB_HOME%\tools

2.

In the Tools folder, enter DBBackup <date or other defining parameter>

HP recommends that you provide a date for the defining parameter. For example, if you type
DBBackup 07102006, the system provides a backup of all data in a directory named
07102006.

To restore the SOLID database:

1.

At the command prompt, enter cd ...%PADB_HOME%\tools

2.

In the Tools folder, enter DBRestore <date or other defining parameter>

3.

Enter the same parameter that you entered in the command prompt for the database backup.
For example, if you entered DBBackup 07102006 to back up your data, you must enter
DBRestore 07102006 to restore the data from the backup contained in the 07102006 directory.

To reset the SOLID database:

1.

At the command prompt, enter cd ...%PADB_HOME%\tools

2.

In the Tools folder, enter DBRestore

From P9000 Performance Advisor v4.5 onwards, you can use the Backup utility to take a backup of
the data and restore the data onto another management station.

How to migrate data from an existing management station to a new management

station?
Use the Backup utility to migrate P9000 Performance Advisor settings and preferences from an existing
management station to a new management station. You can use this tool to preserve your data and
configuration preferences by saving the existing settings and then restoring them on the new
management station.

Can I migrate data between different versions of P9000 Performance Advisor

using the Backup utility?
No. The Backup utility can migrate data only between management stations that have the same
versions of P9000 Performance Advisor installed.

HP StorageWorks P9000 Performance Advisor Software Frequently Asked Questions

65

Should I stop the P9000 Performance Advisor services before using the Backup
utility?
No. You should not stop the P9000 Performance Advisor and Oracle database services while taking
backup or restoring data on a management station.

The disk space on my management station is full, as the undo.log file seems
to have occupied the disk space. Can I stop the P9000 Performance Advisor
services, move the undo.log file to another location, and restart the P9000
Performance Advisor services?
No. You should not delete any of the Oracle related files manually, as this might corrupt the database
and P9000 Performance Advisor may not function properly.

The restore activity is failing though the DKC serial number for which the data
should be restored is provided. What might be the reason?
When a restore activity is initiated using the DKC option in the Backup Utility, ensure that you specify
the correct DKC serial number. Also, verify if the specified DKC serial number exists. Otherwise, the
restore activity fails. Multiple exceptions indicating the failure are displayed in the command prompt
window, where the restore activity started. Following is an example for the DKC serial number, 10090,
where the data restore fails with an exception either due to incorrect or non-existent DKC serial number:
IMP-00002: failed to open PA10090_exp.dump to read
Import file: EXPDAT.DMP

The JRE version on my management station was updated from JRE v1.5 Update
18 to JRE v1.6 and the P9000 Performance Advisor services were restarted.
However, the services did not start. What might be the reason?
The P9000 Performance Advisor services failed to restart, because the JAVA_HOME variable is not
updated and it still points to JRE v1.5 Update 18. So, you need to manually update the JAVA_HOME
environment variable to point to the JRE v1.6 folder. Then, try restarting the P9000 Performance
Advisor services.

Array dashboard and threshold settings

NOTE:
P9000 disk arrays are supported only from P9000 Performance Advisor v5.0 onwards.

Why does ? appear for an XP or a P9000 disk array in the XP/P9000 Array
Health section on the Dashboard screen, though the threshold values are set?
The ? icon appears in the XP/P9000 Array Health section if performance data collection is not
happening for an XP or P9000 disk array.

66

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I set the threshold values for LDEVs on the Threshold Settings screen?
No. Threshold values cannot be set for LDEVs. Instead, you can set threshold values only for the ports,
cache, RAID groups, and DKC resources.

The frontend, cache, and backend categories on the Dashboard screen are
showing the X icon for the P9000 disk array. Does it indicate that the P9000
disk array is not optimally utilized?
Not necessarily. It just indicates that the resources in your P9000 disk array have crossed the threshold
limits that you set for them on the Threshold Settings screen.

There is no activity in my P9000 disk array. However, the categories show the
X icon. What does it indicate?
This can occur in cases where the threshold is set to very low non zero values (for example, 1 for
IOPS or 1MBPS). Ensure that you set appropriate values on the Threshold Settings screen to view the
accurate health of your P9000 disk array.

What does -1 indicate for the Frontend, Backend, Cache, or MP Blade (applicable only for P9000 disk arrays) category on the Threshold Settings screen?
If -1 is displayed for the Frontend, Backend, Cache, or MP Blade category, it means that the
performance threshold values are not yet configured for the XP or the P9000 disk arrays. In such
cases, the usage summary is also disabled on the Dashboard screen.
NOTE:
The following FAQs are on enhancements or new features introduced in Array Dashboard from v4.5
onwards.

Why are LDEV records not displayed in the LDEV Information table on the
Dashboard screen?
The LDEV records are not displayed in the LDEV Information table on the Dashboard screen, if there
is no I/O activity on the LDEVs for the set threshold duration.
NOTE:
The LDEV Information table is available on the Dashboard screen from P9000 Performance Advisor
v4.5 onwards.

Why is Show LDEVs disabled on the Dashboard screen?

The Show LDEVs disabled on the Dashboard screen in the following cases:
If more than one frontend or backend record is selected in the Statistics section on the Dashboard
screen
If you are viewing the statistics for the cache usage

HP StorageWorks P9000 Performance Advisor Software Frequently Asked Questions

67

How are LDEVs displayed in the LDEV Information table on the Dashboard
screen?
The LDEVs records are displayed in the ascending or descending order based on the LDEV Settings
that you will have specified on the Threshold Settings screen. The ascending or descending order is
decided based on an LDEVs average read and write response times.

What does the dashboard high watermark indicate?

The high water mark is an indication of the maximum average usage value of that resource in the
past 24 hours. High watermark is displayed after considering the usage data of a resource in the last
24 hours for a selected metric.
NOTE:
The dashboard high watermark is available on the Dashboard screen from P9000 Performance
Advisor v4.5 onwards.

Why is the dashboard high watermark not displayed in the performance graphs
that I plotted on the Dashboard screen, Chart Work Area?
The dashboard high watermark is disabled, if you select multiple resources and plot their performance
graphs for different metrics. The dashboard high watermark is displayed only when you select a single
resource and metric combination.

Why is the dashboard high watermark not displayed for LDEVs?

The dashboard high watermark is not displayed for LDEVs, because there is no option to set the
threshold values for LDEVs on the Threshold Settings screen.

What does X icon beside a resource indicate in the Statistics section on the
Dashboard screen?
The X icon beside a resource in the Statistics section indicates that the utilization of that resource
corresponding to a particular metric is beyond the set threshold limit.

After an upgrade, when I log in to P9000 Performance Advisor, the Dashboard

displays the error message Error getting XP Array Health.
This error is displayed because the performance threshold values are not yet set. For more information
on setting threshold values, see the HP StorageWorks P9000 Performance Advisor Software User
Guide.
From P9000 Performance Advisor v4.6 onwards, default threshold values are already provided for
the following metrics:
CHA Util (%) 70%
Write Pending (%) 28%
DKA Util (%) 70%
RG Util (%) 50%

68

Frequently Asked Questions

From P9000 Performance Advisor v5.0 onwards, default threshold value is also provided for the MP
blade Util (%) metric (applicable only for P9000 disk arrays), which is 70%.
In addition to providing the threshold values for the other Frontend, Cache, Backend, and MP blade
metrics, you can retain the default values or provide values of your choice for the above mentioned
metrics. The status of resources for the above mentioned metrics is derived based on the default or
threshold values that you set, and displayed on the Troubleshooting screen.

Configuration and performance data collections

I've added another XP disk array as an external storage to my XP24000. Will
I see the external storage related data if I perform an Inband mode of configuration data collection?
No. Inband mode of configuration data collection does not get data on the external storage. Use
Outband mode of configuration data collection to get data on external storage.

After a configuration data collection, the last collection time stamp in the Array
View screen is not updated. Why?
The last collection time stamp is not updated for a configuration data collection. Only a confirmatory
message indicating a successful configuration data collection is displayed in the Event Log screen.
However, if you initiate a performance data collection, the last collection time stamp is updated once
the frequency of collection for the individual resources is complete. For example, if a performance
data collection is initiated at 9:47 AM for a frequency of 5 minutes, the last collection time stamp is
updated only after the 5 minutes completes.

I have added a command device from SLPR1. Can I collect information through
that command device for LUNs presented through other SLPRs?
No. If you add a command device from SLPR1, that command device collects information only for
the LUNs presented through SLPR1. However, if you add a command device from SLPR0, it collects
data from all the LUNs presented through SLPR0. In addition, the command device also collects data
from LUNs presented through associated SLPRs, such as SLPR1, and SLPR2.

I've set the frequency of collection as 5, 10, and 15 minutes for DKC, port, and
RAID groups. The DKC time stamp is getting updated while I am observing that
the port time stamp is not getting updated. Why?
The last collection time stamp get updated based on the performance data collection frequency set
for each individual resource. Since the frequency set for DKC is 5 minutes, it appears first. The last
collection time stamp for port data collection gets updated only after 10 minutes duration.

Why did the Windows GUID on my management station change after I rebooted
the management station?
When the management station is rebooted, the command device configured as the Windows GUID
automatically stops collecting data, as it is no longer considered as the GUID that can interact with
P9000 Performance Advisor. In such a case, configure another command device as the GUID or
recreate the same command device that previously changed, and configure it as the GUID. The Event
Log and the PerformanceAdvisor.log contain similar messages as follows:

In P9000 Performance Advisor, if the data collection interval is set to 5 minutes,

will the data point received be the average value in 5 minutes or just the value
at the point of time, such as the 10:00?
All the values in P9000 Performance Advisor that do not require any calculation are values in point
of time, such as the maximum and minium values. The average value will be over a collection period.

P9000 Performance Advisor real-time charting

NOTE:
The real-time charting feature is available in P9000 Performance Advisor from v4.5 onwards.
Therefore, the following FAQs are not applicable to P9000 Performance Advisor versions prior to
v4.5.

How is P9000 Performance Advisor real time charting different from

P9000Watch?
P9000Watch

P9000Watch can be installed and used only on

a P9000 Performance Advisor host agent.
P9000Watch provides the metrics related to one
or many WWNs, each of which can be selected.
The metrics display information related to CPU,
RAID group, port, Ldev and DKC without giving
any direct association between them. The
minimum collection frequency is 10 seconds.
P9000Watch allows you to monitor any number
of components and is applicable for all XP and
P9000 disk arrays. You can use P9000Sketch to
view and also graphical representation of the data
obtained from P9000Watch.

70

Frequently Asked Questions

Real-time charting
Real-time data charting is integrated into P9000
Performance Advisor and applicable for the P9000 disk
arrays, such as the P9500 and for the following XP disk
array models: XP24000 and XP12000. It enables P9000
Performance Advisor to collect performance data for the
above-mentioned array types through the associated host
agents. The collection frequency depends on the number
of components selected and the load on the XP or the
P9000 disk array. For a minimum XP or P9000 disk array
configuration, the collection frequency can be as low as
five seconds.
Through real-time charting, you can view real-time metrics
collected for RAID groups or LDEVs that belong to an XP
or a P9000 disk array. At a time, you can monitor a
maximum of five RAID groups or LDEVs in an XP or a
P9000 disk array.

I need to monitor response time for a particular RAID group over a shorter duration. Can I collect performance data for less than 60 seconds using P9000 Performance Advisor?
No. The minimum duration for collecting performance data using P9000 Performance Advisor is at
least one minute. To view data for less than a minute duration, use P9000Watch or the real-time
charting feature in P9000 Performance Advisor.

Can I view real-time performance graphs for multiple XP and P9000 disk arrays
simultaneously?
Yes. You can collect real-time performance data and view real-time graphs for multiple XP and P9000
disk arrays. However, ensure that the real-time data collections are happening through dedicated
host agents.
For example, if host agent_A and host agent_B are connected to both XP disk array_1 and XP disk
array_2, initiate a real-time data collection on XP disk array_1 through host agent_A and on XP disk
array_2 through host agent_B. You cannot use host agent_A to collect real-time data for both XP disk
array_1 and XP disk array_2.

Can I initiate multiple instances of real-time data collections for an XP or a P9000

disk array, or multiple XP and P9000 disk arrays using the same host agent?
No. You cannot initiate another instance of real-time data collection using a host agent that is already
collecting real-time data for an XP or a P9000 disk array. At a time, a host agent can only handle
one instance of real-time data collection.

If an XP or a P9000 disk array is connected to two host agents, is it possible to

simultaneously initiate real-time data collections on the XP or P9000 disk array
through both the host agents?
Yes. It is possible to initiate real-time data collections on the XP or P9000 disk array through both the
host agents, as each host agent will still be handling only one instance of real-time data collection.

Can I use a host agent for real-time data collection, if the real-time server is
getting updated on that host agent?
No. Wait for the real-time server update to complete, if you want to use the same host agent for a
real-time data collection.

Can I save a real-time chart for my future reference?

No. There is no option to save real-time charts.

Can I view historic data for an XP or P9000 disk array using the real-time
charting functionality?
No. Real-time charting functionality can only be used to view the point in time data for your XP or
P9000 disk array. If you want to view the historic data, use the Charts functionality provided by
P9000 Performance Advisor.

HP StorageWorks P9000 Performance Advisor Software Frequently Asked Questions

71

When real-time charting is in progress, will it be impacted by either configuration

or performance data collections that are happening simultaneously?
No. When real time collection is in progress for an XP or a P9000 disk array through a host agent,
you can still initiate configuration and performance data collections on the same XP or P9000 disk
array through the same host agent, provided you select a different command device. You can also
select a different host agent for the configuration and performance data collections.

Why are XP10000 and XP20000 type disk arrays not listed under Select Components on the RealTimeCharting screen?
The XP10000 and XP20000 type disk arrays are not displayed under Select Components, as the
real-time charting is supported only for XP24000 or XP12000 type disk arrays.

Why are ports and DKC not available for selection under Select Components
on the RealTimeCharting screen for an XP or a P9000 disk array?
The ports and DKC are not available for selection, as real-time data collection and charting is only
supported for the LDEVs and RAID groups.

Do RAID groups and LDEVs also include external RAID groups and virtual
volumes?
No. RAID groups and LDEVs for an XP or a P9000 disk array in the real-time charting context do not
include external RAID groups, ThP, continuous access, and snapshot virtual volumes.

How many RAID groups and LDEVs can I select for real-time charting? Can these
resources be selected across XP and P9000 disk arrays?
At a time, you can select only five LDEVs or RAID groups in an XP or a P9000 disk array to view their
real-time performance graphs. You cannot do the following:
Select more than five LDEVs or RAID groups in an XP or a P9000 disk array
Select a combination of LDEVs and RAID groups in an XP or a P9000 disk array
Select a combination of LDEVs and RAID groups, or RAID groups across multiple XP and P9000
disk arrays

Why are the concatenated RAID groups not displayed for the XP and P9000
disk arrays under Selected Components on the RealTimeCharting screen?
Concatenated RAID groups are not displayed. Instead, only the first RAID group number from a
concatenated RAID group is displayed for your selection under RAID groups in the Selected Components
list.

I want to view real-time performance graphs for 10 LDEVs that belong to one of
the P9000 disk arrays? How can I view their real-time performance data?
Initiate real-time charting for the first set of five LDEVs. Then, initiate another instance of real-time
charting for the next set of five LDEVs, after stopping the first instance of the real-time charting.

Frequently Asked Questions

If your P9000 disk array is already connected to two host agents, you can start separate instances
of real-time data collections simultaneously through both the host agents. In this case, P9000
Performance Advisor collects real-time data for a set of five LDEVs through each host agent.

I am seeing the following error message when I try to plot a real-time chart for
the LDEV, 00:01 on the RealTimeCharting screen. What does the error message
indicate?
The selected component does not have any activity happening
currently or is no longer present in the XP array.
It implies that the selected LDEV, 00:01 is currently not processing any I/O requests. In such a case,
P9000 Performance Advisor does not plot real-time chart for the LDEV, 00:01, as it is considered as
an unused resource.

I am trying to plot real-time charts for the LDEVs, 00:01, 00:02, and 00:03 on
the RealTimeCharting screen. However, I can see the real-time charts for only
the LDEVs, 00:01 and 00:02. What does it indicate?
It implies that the LDEV, 00:03 is an unused resource. Therefore, you cannot see a real-time chart for
this resource. P9000 Performance Advisor does not plot real-time charts for LDEVs and RAID groups
that are currently not processing any I/O requests.

When I click Update RealTimeServer on the RealTimeCharting screen for a host

agent, how long does it take for the host agent to get the latest configuration
data from the associated XP or P9000 disk array?
The process of updating the real-time server on a host agent takes about 20 - 30 minutes.

Port 8331 is in use on my management station. Which is the file that I should
open to modify the port number?
Open the realtime.properties file and provide the new port number against the Port.Number
field.
On the management station, the realtime.properties file is located in the %HPSS_HOME%/
pa/properties folder.
On the host agent, the realtime.properties file is located in the xppa/realtime/config
folder.
NOTE:
From P9000 Performance Advisor v4.6 onwards, the realtime.properties file is renamed as
xprmihaserver.properties.

HP StorageWorks P9000 Performance Advisor Software Frequently Asked Questions

73

I have updated the new port number in the realtime.properties file on

my management station. However, the communication between the management
station and the host agent is not established. How to re-establish the connection?
Verify if you have updated the same port number in the realtime.properties file on the associated
host agent also. Both the management station and its host agent require the same port number to be
provided in the respective realtime.properties files, so that the communication is established
between them.

P9000 Performance Advisor troubleshooting

NOTE:
The troubleshooting feature is available in P9000 Performance Advisor from v4.5 onwards. Therefore,
the following FAQs are not applicable to P9000 Performance Advisor versions prior to v4.5.

How is Troubleshooting screen useful?

You can use the Troubleshooting screen to identify bottlenecks in the performance of your applications
residing on hosts that use XP and P9000 disk arrays to store the application data. Higher response
time from LDEVs leads to increased response time from applications to user requests.
You can associate your application with its hosts and WWNs on the Troubleshooting screen. This
helps you to view the performance metrics of all the LDEVs and other resources, like CLPRs, RAID
groups, and ports that are involved in processing the I/O requests from your application. It further
helps you to identify those resources that are leading to your application's high response time, so that
you can take the necessary corrective action, like load balancing across resources.

I use P9000Watch to troubleshoot XP disk array performance issues. How different is it from using the Troubleshooting feature provided in P9000 Performance
Advisor?
P9000Watch can be used when you want to collect data samples for a shorter duration of up to 10
seconds and view the graphical representation of this data in P9000Sketch.
The troubleshooting feature in P9000 Performance Advisor uses the data collection frequencies that
you set while creating the performance data collection schedules. (The recommended data collection
frequency in P9000 Performance Advisor is always beyond 60 seconds). It helps you get a wider
range of data for troubleshooting purpose.

How can I view the performance metrics of resources associated with my application?
To view the performance metrics of resources associated with your application on the Troubleshooting
screen:
1.
2.
3.

74

Select the XP or P9000 disk array that has the LDEVs processing I/O requests for your application.
Configure the association between your application, the host where your application resides,
and WWNs of the hosts.
View the performance data of LDEVs, ports, CLPRs, and RAID groups associated with your application. You can also plot the performance graphs of these resources.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I associate my application with resources that belong to legacy XP disk arrays?
No. You cannot associate applications with resources belonging to the following legacy XP disk
arrays, XP256, XP48, and XP512, because WWNs of the hosts connected to these XP disk arrays
are not available.

When can an existing application be associated with an existing host?

There may be cases, where the LDEVs associated with an application are made available through
two hosts belonging to different WWNs. In such cases, you may want to associate the application
with both the hosts.
There may also be cases, where the same set of LDEVs is made available through one host to two
different applications. In such cases, you may want to associate the host with both the applications

What are the different levels at which I can view performance data of resources
associated with my application?
You can view the performance data of LDEVs, ports, CLPRs, and RAID groups at the following three
levels:
Application level: Displays performance data of all the LDEVs, ports, CLPRs, and RAID groups that
are associated with your application
Host level: Displays performance data of all the LDEVs, ports, CLPRs, and RAID groups that are
associated with your application through the specific host and its WWN
WWN level: Displays performance data of all the LDEVs, ports, CLPRs, and RAID groups that are
associated with your application through the specific WWN of the host. This is valid in cases,
where your host uses multiple WWNs to connect to an XP or a P9000 disk array

How to view performance data for resources and map relationship between
different resources associated with my application?
You can view the performance data for resources and also map the relationship between the different
resources (LDEVs, ports, CLPRs, and RAID groups) associated with your application on the
Troubleshooting screen. From the list of configured applications, select the application for which you
want to view the set of associated LDEVs, choose the host, or WWN associated with an application.
Accordingly, the data is displayed on the Troubleshooting screen. Click an LDEV ID in the table under
LDEV Metrics to view the associated port, CLPR, and RAID group records highlighted in the respective
tables under the Frontend metrics, Cache metrics, and Backend metrics.

A * is displayed besides one of the RAID groups in the table under Backend
metrics on the Troubleshooting screen. What does the * indicate?
The * besides a RAID group indicates that the RAID group is contributing to more than one ThP pool
in the XP or P9000 disk array.

NA is displayed for Pool ID in the table under Backend metrics on the

Troubleshooting screen. What does NA indicate?
NA is displayed for Pool ID in the table under Backend metrics for XP disk arrays prior to XP24000,
as ThP pools cannot be configured on these XP disk arrays.

HP StorageWorks P9000 Performance Advisor Software Frequently Asked Questions

75

A port record appears grayed out in the table under Frontend metrics on the
Troubleshooting screen. What does it indicate?
The grayed out port record indicates that it is a partner port. A partner ports uses the same CHA MP
that is also used by the primary port, which communicates the I/O requests from the application to
the associated LDEVs. When you plot a usage graph for the primary port, the usage graph for the
partner port is also displayed. This helps you analyze if the partner port is overloading the CHA MP
that is also associated with the primary port.

Does Pool ID in the table under Backend metrics display all the virtual volumes
on the Troubleshooting screen?
No. You can only view the ThP pools under Pool ID in the table under Backend metrics on the
Troubleshooting screen.

What metrics should I consider to access the response time of my application?

You can look for the performance values of LDEVs, ports, CLPRs, and RAID groups related to the
following metrics:
LDEV

Average read write response time

Port

IOPS, MBPS, and MP Util%

CLPR

Cache usage and read hits

RAID group

RG util%, non seq reads, seq reads, and writes

I have performed an OutBand mode of configuration data collection, but I am

unable to view any WWN under the Troubleshooting menu in the left pane.
For the WWNs to appear under the Troubleshooting menu > Configure Applications in the left pane,
you must perform an Inband mode of configuration data collection. Otherwise, the WWNs are not
displayed. In addition, ensure that at least one round of performance collection is completed.

Alarms and alarms history

NOTE:
The following FAQs are on enhancements or new features introduced in Alarms and Alarms History
from v4.5 onwards. Therefore, these FAQs are not applicable to P9000 Performance Advisor versions
prior to v4.5.

How does search functionality work if I have to search for a physical LDEV under
Alarms?
By default, the search function highlights the first occurrence of the physical LDEV record under Alarms.
If you want to search for a physical LDEV record that belongs to a specific XP or P9000 disk array,
you should select that XP or P9000 disk array record and then provide the CU:LDEV format of the

76

Frequently Asked Questions

physical LDEV ID. The same procedure should be followed if you want to search for physical LDEVs
under Charts.
For example, assume that you are searching for the physical LDEV ID, 0:05 that belongs to the XP
disk array, 10055. However, the search result shows the same LDEV record highlighted under the
XP disk array, 10058. In this scenario, the search result showed the LDEV record, 0:05 highlighted
under the XP disk array, 10058, as it may be the first XP disk array under Alarms. If you want to
search for the LDEV record, 0:05 in the XP disk array, 10055, you should first select that XP disk
array under Alarms and then provide the search entry.
The search results are specific to an XP or P9000 disk array. You cannot search for physical LDEVs
that are spread across multiple XP and P9000 disk arrays. Following are a few important notes on
the search functionality:
Search cannot be used to find physical LDEVs that belong to a custom group
Search cannot be used to find physical LDEVs that belong to a LUSE, or configured as VVols (ThP,
snapshot, Business Copy, or Continuous Access), or Ext RAID Groups
Search does not support multiple entries. You can search for only one physical LDEV resource

If I select a resource under Alarms, will the records also be filtered to simultaneously display the corresponding records on the Alarms History screen?
Yes. The existing set of records are simultaneously filtered on the Alarms History screen to display
only those records specific to the resource that is selected under Alarms.

What is Dispatch Threshold value and where can I view this value?
Dispatch Threshold value is the threshold value for which an alarm was configured to be dispatched.
When you plot a chart for a particular resource on the Alarms History screen, the Dispatch Threshold
value acts like a watermark and helps you know the maximum threshold limit that was set, and the
current performance value of the resource. The Dispatch Threshold value is displayed for only one
resource and metric combination. It is disabled if you choose multiple resources and metrics.
Appropriate legends are displayed to differentiate the current value of the resource from the Dispatch
Threshold value.

When does the status of an alarm record show up as Close under Level on the
Alarms History screen?
The status of an alarm record changes to Close when the corresponding alarm record is deleted from
the Alarms screen.

After setting emails to last dispatch level (level 3), will an email be sent, if the
threshold value is crossed in the next cycle?
P9000 Performance Advisor sends an email alert, if the cache usage exceeds 10%. To receive further
email notification, increase the dispatch level using the Edit option, from the Alarm Config screen.
Verify the same in the Event log.
NOTE:
Once an email has been sent for dispatch level set, no further emails are sent for same alarm, but
the Time Updated field in Alarm History will be updated accordingly.

HP StorageWorks P9000 Performance Advisor Software Frequently Asked Questions

77

When will Good Information alarm be sent?

P9000 Performance Advisor dispatches Good Information alarm notifications, which is a Recovery
Alarm. Good Information email notification is sent, if the performance collection value goes below
the set threshold value.

I've provided the new threshold values for an alarm record on the Alarms screen.
However, the threshold values are not updated. What is the procedure to update
threshold values for an alarm record?
You must select the check box for an alarm record, for which you want to update the alarm
configuration settings (includes setting threshold values). After updating the values, click Edit for the
changes to take effect. The alarm configuration settings are not updated for an alarm record, if you
do not select the corresponding check box.

What does the following error message indicate?

One or more threshold values are not proper (Threshold 1
<= Threshold 2 <= Threshold 3 <= 999999)
This error message is displayed when one or more threshold values are not properly set. The value
that you set as threshold level 3 should be greater than or equal to the value that you set as threshold
level 2. Similarly, the value that you set as threshold level 2 should be greater than or equal to the
value that you set as threshold level 1.

What is the description for Error Code 3, Error Code 6, and Error Code 0, and
when are they displayed?
The following error codes are displayed under Alarms > Alarms History in the Email Status, SNMP
Status, and Script Status text boxes in the following scenarios:
Error Code 3: Displayed when the source SMTP server IP address or host name and the port address, or the SNMP server IP address provided under Settings > PA Settings is incorrect. It is also
displayed if there are errors in the alarm script files (xml files).
Error Code 0: Displayed when the alarm notifications and traps are dispatched, and scripts executed without any errors.
Error Code 6: Displayed under Alarms > Alarms History in the Email Status and SNMP Status text
boxes when the source email address specified under Alarms > Alarms Configuration or Settings >
PA Settings is invalid. It can also be displayed when the SNMP server fails to dispatch the trap to the
intended SNMP trap destination.

4.

Click Save.

What is the minimum and maximum duration that can be set?

You can select a maximum of 7 days. By default, P9000 Performance Advisor considers a minimum
duration of 2 days for the prediction.

Can you provide a use case on why it is necessary to predict variations in LDEVs
response time?
Consider that your application has association with multiple LDEVs and is experiencing slow response
time. Because some of the resources, such as RAID group and CHIP MP are shared, their utilization
might not indicate an impact on the application in question. Instead, you can identify the LDEV that
is experiencing variations in its response time by analyzing the LDEV's read and write response time
values. Then, you can verify the utilization of associated resources, such as CHIP MP, RAID group,
and DKA to take the appropriate action. You can view performance graphs related to other metrics
and analyze the cause for the performance load on the LDEVs.

When is the

displayed for an LDEV on the Troubleshooting screen?

P9000 Performance Advisor analyses the previous average read and write response values of an
LDEV for the duration you specified. It computes a reference value based on the actual data for the
specified duration and verifies whether the average read and write response values of an LDEV are
beyond the reference value. If the values are high, it displays a for the corresponding LDEV.

The

is displayed for one of the LDEVs, what should I do next?

Click the to view the LDEV average read and write response time graph. The graph displays the
variations in the average read and write response time of the selected LDEV. The reference value used
by P9000 Performance Advisor is displayed as a blue straight line in the LDEV average read and
write response time graph.

I clicked the , but a table is displayed. What can I infer from the table data?
P9000 Performance Advisor also displays the duration when the variations were observed. The
durations and the corresponding dates when the load was high on the LDEVs are displayed in the
table that first appears when you click the .

I want to view the chart. How to close the table and view the chart?

Frequently Asked Questions

Will P9000 Performance Advisor work if the HP StorageWorks P9000 Performance Advisor Tomcat Monitor service is not running?
Yes. The HP StorageWorks P9000 Performance Advisor Tomcat Monitor service is essential for the
working of HP StorageWorks P9000 Performance Advisor Tomcat service. The HP StorageWorks
P9000 Performance Advisor Tomcat Monitor service monitors the HP StorageWorks P9000 Performance
Advisor Tomcat service and restarts the tomcat service if it stops. However, if HP StorageWorks P9000
Performance Advisor Tomcat Monitor service stops, it does not impact the functioning of P9000
Performance Advisor.

I have both P9000 Performance Advisor and host agent installed on the same
Windows system and after upgrading P9000 Performance Advisor from prev4.5 to v5.0, I'm seeing the following error message displayed by the installation
wizard. Does it indicate that the upgrade has failed?
The following P9000 Performance Advisor services failed to start: HP
StorageWorks P9000 Performance Advisor Tomcat Monitor
No. The upgrade will not have failed. The error message is displayed because the HP StorageWorks
P9000 Performance Advisor Tomcat Monitor service will have stopped. Click OK on the error dialog
box to ignore the message.
The HP StorageWorks P9000 Performance Advisor Tomcat Monitor service is only essential for the
working of HP StorageWorks P9000 Performance Advisor Tomcat service.

Why is the host agent record still displayed in the Host Information table (Monitoring > Array View > Host Information) even after it is removed from the host?
After you remove the host agent, the corresponding host agent record is still visible on the P9000
Performance Advisor's Host Information screen. Perform the following steps to manually remove the
host agent record from the management station:
1.

Click Monitoring > Array View in the left pane.

2.

Click the Host Information tab.

3.

Select the host agent record that should be removed from P9000 Performance Advisor.

4.

Click Remove Host.

P9000 Performance Advisor deletes the host agent record and logs a confirmation on the Event
Log screen.

When you remove a host agent, the data about the command devices that are exposed to its host
and the following data for the XP and P9000 disk arrays are also removed. You should initiate a new
configuration collection on the XP and P9000 disk arrays and also create, or configure the following
parameters again. For more information, see HP StorageWorks P9000 Performance Advisor Software

Alarm configuration data

Custom groups

Why am I not able to install the latest version of P9000 Performance Advisor
after removing the existing version?
It can be due to traces of the existing version still remaining on the management station. Refer to in
the Troubleshooting section for the procedures on how to remove the existing versions completely and
restart the installations.

Why is UNIX host agent installing failing with JAVA not found error?
While installing a P9000 Performance Advisor UNIX host agent, the installation might fail displaying
the following error:
JAVA not found
The reason might be that the Path system variable on your host is not pointing to the location where
JRE is installed.
Complete the following steps to configure the Path system variable environment variable on your
host must point to the installed JRE location. To set the Java PATH, enter the following command in
the command prompt window:
export PATH=$PATH:/opt/java1.5/bin
You can verify whether the Path variable is updated by typing echo %path% in the command
prompt window. The output lists the paths that are set on your management station, and should include
%JAVA_HOME%\bin.

I have completed installing P9000 Performance Advisor on the management

station, but I am not seeing the P9000 Performance Advisor host agent records
After installing P9000 Performance Advisor on the management station, you have to complete the
host agents installation. Only then, you will be able to view the host agent records in the Host
Information table (Array View > Host Information tab). For more information on downloading and
installing P9000 Performance Advisor host agents, see the HP StorageWorks P9000 Performance
Advisor Software Installation Guide.

I have upgraded P9000 Performance Advisor to v4.5.1 and not able to perform
Inband mode of configuration data collection for XP10000, XP12000, XP20000,
and XP24000 type arrays. Why?
NOTE:
This prerequisite is applicable only on P9000 Performance Advisor v4.5.1.
Upgrade to P9000 Performance Advisor v4.5.1, only if you are able to register the XP disk arrays
SVP IP addresses with P9000 Performance Advisor. This prerequisite is mandatory for the XP10000,
XP12000, XP20000, and XP24000 type arrays and applicable for both the Inband, and Outband
mode of configuration data collections. This is because, P9000 Performance Advisor first gets the
raw capacity of the XP disk arrays during the configuration data collection using the Outband mode.

86

Frequently Asked Questions

Hence, it is necessary that the SVP IP addresses of these XP disk arrays be registered with P9000
Performance Advisor. If they cannot be registered, HP recommends that you do not upgrade to v4.5.1.

I have a management station, where I have installed the P9000 Performance

Advisor application and also the database on the same drive. Is it possible to
move the database from the current location to another drive location on the
same management station?
No. It is not possible to move the Oracle database files from one drive location to another on the
same management station without interrupting the current setup of P9000 Performance Advisor.
However, if you are using a pre-v3.5 version, it is still possible to move the database from one drive
location to another on the same management station. For more information, see Does database
backup, restore and reset work in all versions of P9000 Performance Advisor? on page 65.
To move an Oracle database from one drive location to another, following is the suggested
workaround:
1.

Initiate a backup of the complete P9000 Performance Advisor database using the Backup Utility.

2.

Remove the current version of P9000 Performance Advisor.

3.

Install the current version of P9000 Performance Advisor again.

4.

Select a different drive location for the P9000 Performance Advisor database.

5.

Restore all the data using the Backup Utility.

Can I copy the P9000 Performance Advisor database before removing the application, so that the same database can be restored after the installation is
complete? In addition, how can I ensure that P9000 Performance Advisor restores
data from the folder that I specify?
From v3.5 onwards, copying database and pasting it onto a management station is not valid and
does not result in restoring the database. To backup and restore the database, you can do the
following:
1.

2.

Archive performance data for the XP and P9000 disk arrays using the database archival functionality and later import the data back onto the same management station or another management
station where P9000 Performance Advisor is newly installed.
Backup the data using the Backup Utility and later restore that data onto the same management
station or another management station where P9000 Performance Advisor is newly installed.

NOTE:
Ensure that the P9000 Performance Advisor versions on both the source and target management
stations are the same.
For more information on archiving and importing data, or using the Backup utility, see the HP
StorageWorks P9000 Performance Advisor Software User Guide.

HP StorageWorks P9000 Performance Advisor Software Frequently Asked Questions

87

After removing Performance Advisor v3.4.1 on the management station, I did

not delete the HPSS folder and started with the v4.5 installation. After the installation completed, I am not able to log into Performance Advisor. Why?
As you did not delete the HPSS folder when you removed v3.4.1 and later installed v4.5, the HPSS
folder will contain both SOLID and Oracle files. Remove v4.5, delete the HPSS folder manually, and
reinstall v4.5 on the management station.

Configuration FAQs
Following are the configuration FAQs:
Table 4 Limiting the amount of disk array history records per transfer from the web server
File

...%HPSS_HOME%\pa\properties\serverparameters.properties

When Read

This parameter is read the first time a request is sent to scroll through a range of disk array
data.

Discussion

This limits the amount of records the web server can send to the client and prevents a large
amount of data from being dragged across the network at one time. To view a large amount
of records, manually adjust the begin and end times on the web browser, and request the
records from the web server.
Use the following to keep an XML data request that covers a large amount of time, data records from tying up a servlet with a large transfer and causing out-of-memory errors. The
client can make requests for more data, because it has a count of records that are available
and can specify which record to start with for the next transfer.

Entry

DiskArrayPerfHistoryMaxRecordTransfer=1000

Table 5 Users database backup and restore

When necessary

When it is necessary to perform a backup of the P9000 Performance Advisor users and
groups data, and restore it later.
Users database backup and restore.
To backup the data, select Start > Programs > HP Storage Works > XP Performance Advisor
> Backup Utility.

Discussion

To restore the data, select Start > Programs > HP Storage Works > XP Performance Advisor
> Restore.
When you perform a backup or restore operation, the P9000 Performance Advisor service
is automatically stopped. After the backup or restore completes, you need to manually start
the P9000 Performance Advisor services (select Start > Programs > HP Storage Works >
XP Performance Advisor > Start services).

Table 6 Configuring the alarm dispatch engine on the web server

File

88

...%HPSS_HOME%\pa\properties\serverparameters.properties

Frequently Asked Questions

These parameters are read whenever an alarm dispatch engine is started. An alarm dispatch
engine comprises various threads, and it is attached to a servlet. The servlet alarm tallies can be
viewed in a web browser at:
http://<servername>/servlet/com.hp.xpsl.alarms.AlarmDis patchServlet
This is mentioned here as a convenience and is not supported because its purpose is for
development and debugging. The fields presented to the web browser are used in the dispatch
engine's bookkeeping, and do not necessarily correspond to alarms that are sent to a particular
destination.

When
Read

Nevertheless, it serves as a window for monitoring and general status purposes. See the Event
History window for a more useful display. Send suggestions on how you would like to see this
feature improved to better serve your needs.

Discussion

Only the first two parameters are relevant to customer-site usage. The two default timeout values
are greater than the normal error-sensing time that is actually necessary. These values are used
to determine how long to wait on the dispatch courier's thread before stopping the thread. This
prevents the alarm dispatch engine from locking up on an errant send request.
The following is the amount of time in milliseconds to wait for an SMTP request to complete:
Email_TimeOut=30000
The following determines if real or fake data is used for alarms:
1 -> use database data; 0 -> use fake data

Entry

Listen_To_Database=1
The following determines how long to sleep between sending groups of fake data:
This is active only when not listening to the database. Units are milliseconds.
Fake_Data_Sleep=120000
The following is the email address separated by spaces:

Table 7 Configuring the e-mail (SMTP) courier on the web server for alarms
File

...%HPSS_HOME%\pa\properties\serverparameters.properties

When
Read

Each time an alarm is produced that has at least one e-mail recipient.

Discussion

The first two fields are used to establish a connection with the SMTP server. You must provide the
SMTP server names that can communicate with your web server. Changing the "from" field is advisable for readability purposes, especially if the SMTP server checks for a valid sender. This is not to
be used to spam people. Change the subject line and the definable message fields as desired.
These areas are especially useful for adding phrases for your particular locale, explaining what a
message means, or receiving the message into a program that parses the main body of the message
and performs some automated processing. Currently, there are no levels of alarm severity for e-mail
messages.

NOTE:
You can also configure the email (SMTP) courier settings for alarms from the P9000
Performance Advisor GUI. For more information, see the HP StorageWorks P9000
Performance Advisor Software User Guide.
