geological mapping

Maps for natural hazard awareness and resource discovery

Much of New Zealands wealth
and economic well-being is
directly and indirectly related to
the earth below.
Geological maps show the distribution
of different rock types and structures
around us.
GNS Science has amassed considerable
field mapping experience throughout
New Zealand, parts of Antarctica,
Australia and the Pacific.
We manage large archives of historical
maps, extensive rock and fossil
collections, and digital databases.
This knowledge is sought and used by
resource industries for the exploration

of minerals, petroleum, coal and

groundwater. We provide specialist
structural, petrological and other advice
on prospective areas as well as regional
geology overviews.

Geological maps also allow better

understanding of exposure to
geological hazards. Our maps depict
large landslides, active and inactive
faults, volcanic eruption deposits
and modern flood plain deposits.

of spatial techniques to statistically
quantify relationships between
geological features and known
resources. Prediction of prospective
ground for new exploration.

from property level to regional scales,
collation and integration of existing
information with new field-based
observations and interpretations.

GIS data compilation Collation and

integration of geological and other
relevant information to support
exploration of specific areas or
commodity targets, and to assess
susceptibility and exposure to
natural hazards.

Hazard evaluation Use of spatial

geological data for determination
of likely earthquake shaking
amplification, liquefaction potential,
fault rupture hazard and susceptibility
to landsliding.

Aoraki is one of our recently completed

1:250,000 geological maps in the QMAP
Geological Map of New Zealand series.
These are high quality printed maps
with explanatory books, also available
in digital GIS vector and raster image
formats.

An epithermal gold prospectivity CD has

been compiled, packaging geological
and other exploration-focussed data
into a GIS, aimed at stimulating and
sustaining mineral exploration in
northern New Zealand.

PropertyInsight combines extensive

map-based geological hazard
information with GIS technology to
provide property owners and local
authorities with property-specific
geological hazard reports.

about us
GNS Science is a government-owned
research and consultancy company
specialising in earth sciences.
We have been undertaking geological
surveys and making maps of New
Zealands geology for over 120 years.

Our maps are increasingly available as

digital GIS vector products tailored for
specific needs. Our geological maps
integrate New Zealands stratigraphic
framework with active and inactive
faults and other structures.

They are widely used by mining and

petroleum exploration industries,
government, geotechnical consultancies,
universities, schools and the public for
resource assessment, education, hazard
evaluation and planning.
