SIGNAL LINE PROTECTORS RS422 / RS485 DIN rail

DINsafe

Protection is provided for both common and transverse

mode disturbances, with an isolated frame ground
providing a low impedance to frame under surge
conditions. However, this appears as an open circuit
under normal conditions. This technique eliminates
noise, which may be introduced by earth loops.

Installation

Product Description
Novaris DINsafe signal line protectors are designed
for the effective protection against lightning induced
overvoltages on process control, telemetry, PLC,
telecommunications and information technology
systems.
The RS422 / RS485 protector is designed for the
protection of PLC and other distributed control
systems using RS422 and RS485 data highway
protocols. Each unit provides protection for up to two
circuits for the transmit and receive lines.

Operation
Multistage transient protection is utilised with gas
filled arresters, as the first stage, absorb the majority of
the energy.

Install one unit at each item of equipment to be

protected. When screened cable is used connect the
screen to the SCR connection. Connect the frame
ground stud to the earth of the equipment. In the two
pair version 2 circuits are provided for the transmit and
receive lines. If these lines are in a single cable, only
one screen connection is necessary. Regardless of the
direction of signal flow, always connect the LINE to
the external cable side.

Fine protection consisting of a secondary clamping

stage absorbs residual let through energy from the gas
arrester. In the RS422 / RS485 protector a unique
circuit is utilised to minimise loading caused by
component capacitance. This results in a usable
frequency response to beyond 20MHz so that highspeed digital signals can pass without attenuation or
distortion.

Surge rating:

The secondary clamping circuit provides an exact

clamping voltage of 10V regardless of the magnitude
of the incoming surge.
