and you can usually enjoy such benefits for free, without investing in new hardware.
The downside, of course, is that its often hard to learn about something new,
especially if youve spent years growing accustomed to previous operating systems.
Things move, things change, and sometimes options that weve relied on get
completely removed (hey, Apples good, but nobody says its perfect). Plus, it can be
tricky to learn how to take advantage of brand-new features.
Luckily, thats where this special issue of Mac|Life comes in. Although its been a few

plenty of questions about all the changes in Apples latest operating systems, which is why
weve collected more than 180 tips from the pages of Mac|Life and compiled them into

Mavericks, the next generation of OS X, has arrived.

With its usual fanfare, Apple announced the newest Mac
operating system at its annual World Wide Developers
Conference in June 2013, doing away with the typical bigcat naming convention that OS X is known for and replacing
it with a new identity derived from the world-renowned
surfing spot on the coast of California. But OS X Mavericks
includes lots of finesse that goes beyond just the new
name; with each iteration of OS X, Apple tends to polish
and refine their products, and Mavericks is no exception.
With Mavericks, Apple has brought even more iOS
functionality over to the Mac: iBooks, Maps, and even better
Notifications reminiscent of those found on iOS, just to name
a few. And they didnt stop there. A lot of the functionality of

Mavericks is under the hood, where every ounce of power and

performance is squeezed out of your existing hardware while
keeping battery power in mind on portables. New technologies
available in OS X Mavericks like timer coalescing mean that
the CPU will use less power to do the same tasks, and App
Nap will reduce the CPU usage of applications that are hidden
from view on the screen. All of these features mean that your
battery will thank you with longer life and better performance.
Apple has packed so many new features into the new OS
that you may miss some of them if you arent checking every
nook and cranny. But dont worry; were here to help you
navigate these uncharted waters. Sit back and surf Mavericks
with us as we take a look at 70 tips and tricks to get
the most out of your new Mac operating system.

Mac App Store

The Mac App Store is the heart of software on the Mac, and it has received some much-needed features that brings it up to par with
the iOS 7 version of the iTunes App Store, including automatic upgrades and the ability to postpone updates until youre ready.

Install Updates Automatically

iOS 7 includes the ability to automatically update applications available via third
parties on the iTunes App Store, so its no wonder that this functionality also
extends to the Mac. In System Preferences > App Store, you now have the ability
to Install app updates, as
well as Install system data
files and security updates,
all automatically. Check
these boxes and youll
never be bothered with
updates again.

Install Updates Later

Weve all been there: an important update pops up for an application that youre currently
using. Quite a predicament: do you close your work, update the app, then continue your task?
Or, more likely, do you just never update? Well, Mavericks can help with that. Simply open the
Mac App Store and select the small drop-down menu on the Update button that appears. Youll
have the option to Install Now, Try in an Hour, Try Tonight, or set a reminder so you can do it at
some other point in the future.

Settings
New features in System Preferences let users more easily view and manage their Bluetooth devices, sign into their LinkedIn accounts,
and create text replacement for certain strings when typed into text areas.

Text Replacement
Navigate to System Preferences > Keyboard >
Text, and you will find a new text-substitution
feature that lets you easily specify any text to be
replaced, and what to replace the text with. This
works similarly to other text-substitution tools
available as third-party applications on the Mac.

LinkedIn Accounts
New to the Accounts System Preference pane is the ability to sign into
a LinkedIn account. Doing this will allow your LinkedIn connections to
show up in the Contacts application, give you the ability to share links to
LinkedIn across the system (including Safari), and also allow other thirdparty apps the ability to integrate with your LinkedIn account.

New Bluetooth Management Interface

The Mac has long had the ability to easily pair with Bluetooth devices, but Apple
has made this even easier in Mavericks. Head over to System Preferences
> Bluetooth to see the new Bluetooth-management interface. Going to this
section will now automatically show all devices that have been paired. Here,
devices that are eligible to be paired will also be shown with a small Pair
button beside the name. Easily turn Bluetooth off with the Turn Bluetooth
On/Off button.

iBooks
With mavericks, iBooks makes its debut on the mac. Now, you can purchase and read both standard and interactive iBooks right from
your mac without any ios device required. iBooks purchased on your mac will sync between your other mac and ios devices with
itunes in the cloud purchases with ease.

Purchasing iBooks
iBooks has finally come to the mac. in
addition to viewing your purchased iBooks,
you can also buy new books right from your
mac and have them sync between your ios
devices. simply open the new iBooks app
and select the iBooks store button in the
upper-left corner of the window (or press
shift + command + H). peruse the iBooks
store and purchase books with the same
ease as in the itunes store.

Viewing iBooks
To view your existing (or newly purchased) iBooks, navigate to the Library by pressing Command
+ L. Here, sign in with your Apple ID (do so in Store > Sign In). After you do, all of your existing
iBooks that you have purchased will be shown in this Library view. To view a book from your existing
library, double-click on it in this library view. If the iBook has an iCloud icon, then it will automatically
download. (Note that you may be
required to authorize your computer
to view these books; standard iTunes
authorization applies, so only five
machines can be authorized at any
given time to view content.)

Creating iBook Notes
All of the conveniences of iBooks on iOS are now available right on your Mac. One of
these conveniences is the ability to add notes to your iBooks as you read them. To do
this, select a portion of text and select Add Note in the popup that
appears after selecting some text. This will automatically highlight the
selected text and give you a sticky to begin typing your notes. Press
Command + 4 to open the Notes panel to quickly view all highlights
and notes.

Creating iBook Highlights

Adding Highlights to a section is as easy as adding a Note.
Instead of selecting Add Note, simply select a highlight
color from the selection popup. If you wish to quickly add a
highlight without going through the popup menu that shows
when selecting text, then hold down the Command key while
you select a portion of text. This will automatically use your
last highlight style to automatically highlight the portion of
selected text without displaying the selection popup.

Viewing Multiple Books at a Time

Because the Mac has more screen real estateand
the notion of multiple windowsApple has added
the ability to view several books at once on the
screen. This is a great feature that can be had by
opening the first book, then pressing Command + L
(to show the library) and double-clicking on a second
book. You can keep doing this until you have all of
the books you want open on the screen.

Finder
originally introduced 30 years ago, the Finder has been the heart of the mac os through many releases. With mavericks, apple is
implementing some much-requested features such as the ability to use Finder in full-screen mode, and the introduction of tabs and tags.

Tabs
Ever since the introduction of tabbed browsing in Safari, Mac users have been requesting the same
functionality for the Finder. Apple has finally listened, and has implemented the ability to browse your
files with tabs. Doing so acts exactly like Safari. Press Command + T to open a new tab from your current
location. New
tabs will open
with the same
view that youve
selected in Finder
> Preferences >
General under the
option for New
Finder windows
show.

Full-Screen Finder
since Lion, full-screen apps have
been a staple of os x, but the Finder
has never received this functionality.
that is, until now. With mavericks,
clicking on the full-screen button
in the Finders top-right corner will
bring the file browser full screen. this
full-screen mode is especially helpful
when dealing with file renaming or
photo browsing.

Re-Enable the Library Folder

With OS X Lion, Apple discontinued the ability for users to show
the Library folder inside of their Home folder. Professional Mac
users (especially developers) were disappointed by this move.
Fortunately, Apple has now added the ability to un-hide this
folder. To do so, highlight your Home folder in the finder sidebar,
then press Command + J (to show Finders View Options). Here,
a checkbox labeled Show Library Folder will do just that.

Editing Tag Meaning

The Finder has long had the ability to label files and
folders with colorful highlights. These labels could
be assigned meaning in the Finder preferences. With
the introduction of Mavericks, these labels are now
tags, and the meaning of these tags can be edited in
Finder > Preferences > Tags. Double-click on any of
the titles to change the title to your custom meaning.

Notifications
From interactive notifications to web notifications to being able to turn on Do Not Disturb mode,
Notification center for os x has been greatly improved since its introduction in os x mountain Lion.

Website Notifications
in mountain Lion, apple introduced Notification center for the mac and
announced that safari would support notifications from websites. Now, website
notifications can be delivered without users having to be on the website that
is sending the notification. You can manage these web notifications in safari >
preferences > Notifications.

Using Interactive Notifications

applications now have the ability to implement interactive notifications for
users. one such app that now supports interactive Notifications is itunes.
When you play itunes radio (or other music), a notification will be presented
whenever a song changes. Hovering over
the notification, a skip button will appear.
clicking this action button in the notification
will perform the action. incoming imessages
also receive this treatment, allowing you to
reply to an imessage directly from the Notification bubble.

Delaying Updates
instead of the usual mac app store Updates available
notification that appeared in mountain Lion, youll now have
the ability to delay updates if a restart is required for
an update. You can now choose to either perform a
restart immediately, or choose an option like try in
an Hour, try tonight, or remind me tomorrow.

While You Were Away

A new feature of OS X Mavericks is the ability to view
Notifications on the Lock screen for your account. This lets
you see exactly what happened while you were away from
your Mac. Notifications like Messages alerts and other push
notifications will stick to the Lock screen.

Do Not Disturb Mode

Do Not Disturb Mode has finally made its way over to the Mac. This
tool lets you choose what time you do not wish to be disturbed
with Notification Center notifications. Set this time by navigating to
System Preferences > Notifications
> Do Not Disturb. Here, you can
choose to turn on Do Not Disturb
between certain hours, or when
connecting to TVs and projectors.
You can also choose to keep
FaceTime calls from being received
when DND is turned on.

Disable Show
Notifications on
Lock Screen

Send Messages through Notification Center

If you have turned on the share buttons in the Notification Center (turn
em on in System Preferences > Notifications), then you will be able to
send an iMessage right from the Notification Center. Just open the sidebar
by clicking the Notification icon in the menubar (top right-most corner
of the screen),
and clicking on
the iMessage
button. Type the
recipients address,
then the message,
and press Send
to deliver the
message.

If you do not wish to have your

notifications stick to the lock
screen for While You Were Away
mode, then you can disable this
functionality on a per-application
basis. Simply navigate to System
Preferences > Notifications and
select the application, then uncheck
the box labeled Show notifications
on lock screen. This will prevent
the selected apps notifications from
appearing on the Mac lock screen.

Maps
mapping on the mac has always been primarily spearheaded by Google maps in the web browser, but now apple is moving its own
mapping system to the mac, allowing users to get directions, view flyovers, and more, right from a single app. But mapping in
mavericks goes deeper than that, and integrates into the majority of built-in apps.

Changing the Map Views

Just like in the Maps application for iOS, the
Maps app for OS X lets you switch between the
three well-known map views: standard, hybrid,
and satellite. To change these views, select either
the corresponding button in the toolbar, or use
the keyboard shortcuts by pressing Command
+ 1, Command + 2, or Command + 3 to switch to
standard, hybrid, and satellite, respectively.

View Bookmarks
to view Bookmarks, click the Bookmark icon in the toolbar
(located to the left of the search bar by default). Here, you
can search through your bookmarks, see recent places, and
also view contacts via icloud. if you have an ios device with
icloud turned on, then all of your recents will be synced
between devices.

View Traffic
maps for os x mavericks also includes the ability to view
traffic details right from your mac, giving you important
information before you ever leave. to do this, open the
maps app and select view > show traffic. Now, whenever
your map-viewing area has traffic alerts, you will see them
listed on the map.

Viewing Local
Search Results
When searching for a local
point of interest, you can click
the pin that was dropped for
the location, then press the
Info button for the pin. You
will get a popup that lists
the information for the POI,
along with the ability to view
reviews and photos (from
Yelp if available).

Mapping Contacts
In the Contacts app, you can now hover over an
address to get a Show Map button. Clicking
this button will open the Maps application
directly to the address that you selected.

Getting Directions
Select the directions button in the default toolbar or press
Command + R to view the directions view.
In this view, you can specify a starting
and end location, and the mode of
transportation. (Currently the Maps app
supports driving and walking directions.)
You can print these directions by pressing
Command + P (or File > Print).

Maps (continued)

Viewing Flyover Data

Apple pioneered Flyover (their 3D mapping system) on iOS devices with iOS 6, but it has now moved over
to the Mac with the Maps application. To view the
data, open the map to a city that has Flyover data,
and then press Command + 0 (or select the Flyover
button in the toolbar). Navigate the Flyover map
using the trackpad with two fingers to scroll. To
adjust the field-of-view angle, click and drag on the
small compass at the bottom of the Maps window.

Adding Maps to Contacts

Within the Maps application, you can add an
address from the Maps app directly to a contact
in the Contacts application. To do this, drop a pin
on a location or select a point of interest. Next,
select the pin, and show the Info panel by clicking
on the i button in the popup. Next, in the popup
that appears, select the button labeled Add to
Contacts. This will open the Contacts application
and create a new card for the map pin.

Sending Maps to iOS Devices

If you are running an iOS 7 device, then you can send Maps from
your Mac to your iOS device with ease. You can share your Maps and
directions like so: open the directions or map to a location that you wish
to share, then select File > Share > Send to Device. After a few seconds,
your iOS device will receive a notification that the Maps app has received
information from your Mac.

Safari
safari is a browsing experience that focuses on the content and what you can do with it. safari for mavericks is no different, allowing
you to store credit cards for easy checkout on online stores, providing the ability to view your shared links from social networks like
twitter, and allowing you to tweak how web plugins work on a per-site basis.

Top Sites Thumbnails

By default, the top sites page appears when opening new browser windows or tabs. You can also get to this new view by
pressing option + command + 1. the top sites list shows all of the sites that you frequent on a regular basis, with most-visited
sites appearing in the upper-left corner. Unlike previous versions of safari, you can now rearrange items in this view by clicking
and dragging them around. You can also remove
or pin an item to this view by right-clicking the
item and then pressing either the remove or pin
button that appears.

Safari Sidebar
the safari sidebar is a new section that houses both
Bookmarks and the safari reading List. to get to it, select the
Bookmark button in the Bookmarks Bar, or press command +
shift + L. in this section, you now have access to reading List
articles and Bookmarks from one place.

Shared Links
if you have signed into your twitter account in
system preferences > accounts, then you will
now have access to a new feature called shared
Links in the safari sidebar. this sidebar item
will aggregate all of the recent links from your
twitter stream and list them here, ready for
clicking and browsing.

Bonjour Bookmarks and Favorites
Bonjour is Apples local network service that allows software on different devices to
communicate easily over Wi-Fi or wired LAN. Apple has long built Bonjour into Safari for
sharing bookmarks with other Macs on your network, but you now have the option to turn
off this feature in Safari > Preferences > Advanced. Uncheck the options Include Bonjour
in the Bookmarks menu and
Include Bonjour in the Favorites
bar to prevent these shared
bookmarks from appearing.

Retweeting Shared Links

When you browse to a shared link in Safari, a new bar appears at the top of the page
with the Tweet of the source of the article from your Twitter stream. Beside the
username of the origin
tweet, youll notice a
small Retweet button.
Clicking this link will cause
the tweet to be retweeted
to your followers.

Web Plugin Management

Safari 7 includes a lot of fine-grain controls when it comes to web-browser plugins like Flash, QuickTime, and others.
Navigate to Safari > Preferences > Security > Manage Website Settings to get a glance of the new options. Here, you can
select a plugin in the left list, and then get precise control over how that plugin
performs. When visiting a website that utilizes one of these plugins, the site will
appear under the Currently Opened Websites list, and you can choose whether
to Ask, Block, Allow, Allow Always, or Run in Unsafe Mode whenever this site
encounters this type of plugin again.

Keychain Access
the security of your saved passwords in os x falls to the keychain access technology. With mavericks, apple can now sync your
keychain with icloud, which distributes your saved passwords and credit cards to all of your icloud-connected devices. this is great if
you dont already have a password-syncing tool like 1password.

Keychain Sync
icloud keychain is a new feature that allows your os x and ios
keychains to stay in sync, letting you autofill your passwords no
matter which device youre using. to use this new feature, youll
need to head to system
preferences > icloud, and
check the box for the
service keychain. if
you didnt set up icloud
keychain in the mavericks
setup assistant, then
youll be walked through
preparation steps so your
icloud account is more
secure for keychain access.

Generating Passwords
safari is the first app to include a new keychain feature
that automatically generates a secure password
for you to use. Youll need to have icloud keychain
and autofill enabled for this to work properly. When

Storing Credit Cards

Safari includes the ability to securely save your credit
card information in your keychain for easy online
purchases. To save a card number, visit Safari >
Preferences > AutoFill. Ensure that Credit cards is
checked, and then select the Edit button. Enter your
credit cards in the form provided to securely save them
in your keychain. If iCloud Keychain is enabled, then
this information will sync between all of your iCloud
Keychain-enabled devices.

Quick Checkout with Credit Cards

After youve saved a credit card in Safari and want to check out, click
inside of a credit card field. Safari will prompt for which saved card youd
like to enter (it will not automatically autofill
this information for security reasons). If you
have multiple cards entered, you can select
whichever one you prefer.

Mail
Mail remains primarily the same between OS X Mountain Lion and Mavericks,
but a new feature allows you to find your contacts more easily.

In-Line Address Book

Mail now includes a built-in address book lookup feature in
Mavericks. Simply open the New Message window as you normally
would and notice the new plus button in the To field. Clicking it will
open your contacts, ready for you to populate the field. Clicking on
any of your contacts in this list will add that contact as a recipient.

Tags
In OS X Tiger, Apple revolutionized the way we store our files on the Mac with Spotlight: we could store files anywhere, and with
a few clicks, could find them again. With tags in Mavericks, Apple is revolutionizing file storage again. Users can now tag files and
folders for easy search and retrieval.

Tagging Items in
the Finder
Tags are a touted feature
of Mavericks, allowing
you to tag nearly any
file across OS X for
later reference. Tagging
existing items in the
Finder is fairly easy.
Simply right-click an
item (or use the Get Info
panel) and select Tags.
In this popup, you can see
existing tags or type in
a new one to assign that
tag to the file in question.

Searching by Tags
Tags are pretty useless unless you can do things with them. One major use of
tags is searching for files containing certain tags later. To do this, open a new
Finder window and search for the tag name. In the search filter that appears,
select your tag name under the Tags heading. This will filter the results to only
files containing that tag.

Listing Files by Tags

The Finder can now show tags in the sidebar. To do so, ensure that the Recent
Tags sidebar option in Finder > Preferences > Sidebar is checked, then click on a
tag name in the sidebar to instantly jump to a listing of only the files tagged with
that specific tag.

Saving Files with Tags

New to Mavericks is the ability to save any file with specific tags
from any application that supports the standard Save feature in
OS X. (Thats every Mac App Store
application and many other apps that
are distributed through other means.)
To do this, save your file and, in the
Save dialog, enter your tag into the
Tags field beneath the Save As field.
The file will be saved and associated
with the tag that youve specified.

Using Tags with iCloud Files

Just like specifying tags for files in the Finder, you can also
specify tags in the iCloud file listing for any application
that supports iCloud. Simply open the iCloud file panel and
right-click on a file. Select Tags and then enter your tag
to associate iCloud-based files with that Tag.

Performance
With each iteration of OS X, Apple likes to squeeze as much performance out of its machines as possible through software tweaks
and performance boosts. Mavericks does not disappoint in this area. After installing, youll notice the OS is now snappier and has a
huge boost in battery performance. But Apple didnt stop there.

App Nap
App Nap is a new behind-the-scenes technology that aims to help improve your battery power
performance on your Mac laptop. It does this by sensing windows that are behind others, and
automatically slowing down the app until it switches
back into main focus. One such example is iTunes,
which will preserve power consumption by stopping
irrelevant tasks (such as playing videos) when its
window is not visible.

Compressed Memory
If you pay attention to the Activity Monitor
in Mavericks, you will notice that not only is
performance faster, but memory management is
better, as well. This is thanks to the compressed
memory technology that is built into the OS. As
more and more apps begin to run, and physical
memory becomes utilized more and more, the OS
will automatically free up memory space as you
begin to need it. Inactive (or hidden) applications
will automatically have their memory compressed,
making even more memory available for the frontmost applications.

iTunes Playback
Apple has greatly improved video playback in the version of iTunes that ships with Mavericks. Playing back videos in high
definition now utilizes 35 percent less CPU usage. You can fire up a video on battery power without worrying about the
instant energy drain.

Safari Power Save

Websites often use power-consuming plugins that can drain battery life. Adobe Flash is
one such plugin that can make for a miserable browser experience when youre running
on battery power. Fortunately, Apple has found a way to combat this drain. In Safari for
Mavericks, youll notice that instead of automatically enabling these plugins, Safari detects
and places a static preview of the content. Clicking on the preview will load the plugin and
display the
content. You
can enable or
disable this
power-saving
feature
in Safari >
Preferences
> Advanced
via the box
labeled Stop
plugin-ins to
save power.

Viewing Power-Consuming Apps

OS X Mavericks includes a way to view the most power-hungry
applications currently running on your Mac. This can help you
determine which applications to quit while running on battery power.
When you feel that an application is using too much power, simply
click on the battery
menu item in the OS X
menu bar. Clicking an
app under the Apps
Using Significant
Energy heading will
open Activity Monitor
so you can view its
CPU usage.

Multiple Displays
Lets face itmultiple displays on the Mac have been less than lackluster in previous OS versions. Apple is hoping to make it better
with Mavericks, however, and we think theyve finally succeeded. From the ability to save window state when connecting/disconnecting
displays to being able to finally handle full-screen apps separately, multiple-display functionality has definitely improved.

Changing Default
Screen for Menu Bar
With Mavericks, Apple has greatly improved
the behavior for connected displays. One such
improvement is the ability to select which external
monitor gets to display the menu bar (the top bar
that usually appears only on your primary display).
To select which display gets this treatment, navigate
to System Preferences > Displays > Arrangement.
In this screen, select which display is the primary
display by dragging the white menu bar between the
displays. New to Mavericks is that the menu bar will
appear on all displays, but will be slightly dimmed on
non-primary displays.

Changing Default Screen for Dock

Without any configuration, the Dock is automatically
available on all external displays, but its hidden by default
on everything except the primary monitor. If you wish to
access the Dock on a secondary monitor, simply bump the
edge of the screen where the Dock is configured to sit (left,
right, or bottom). The Dock will jump from the primary
screen to the requested display.

Upgraded Mission Control

Mission Control now has the ability to drag windows
from other displays, plus full-screen applications can
be dragged from one display and assigned to another.
Simply drag the applications full-screen thumbnail
from one display to another, and it will assign the fullscreen app to that display.

Multiple Display AirPlay

Previous versions of Mac OS X let you connect to an Apple TV to share your
screen, but instead of acting like a second display, it was for mirroring only.
AirPlay can now act like a second display. Connect to an Apple TV over
AirPlay and head over to System Preferences > Displays > Arrangement,
and uncheck the Mirror Display option to get a wireless, independently
controllable display. All of the standard second-display options apply to
AirPlay-connected Apple TVs.

Displays Have Separate Spaces

Spaces, the multiple-desktop environment for OS X, now
has a new feature that makes it better for external-display
users. Instead of sharing the same Spaces across multiple
monitors, each monitor can now have its own Spaces.
To enable this, navigate to System Preferences > Mission
Control and check the box labeled Displays have separate
Spaces. With this option enabled, each connected external
display will be able to independently switch to a different
Space without
affecting
other
displays.

Revert to Mountain Lion

Spaces Settings
Many users will undoubtedly despise the new features of
Spaces and Mission Control, but fortunately, you can revert
back to the pre-Mavericks style of dealing with Spaces.
To do so, go to System Preferences > Mission Control and
uncheck the option for Displays have separate Spaces.

Full-Screen Apps on Separate Displays

By default in Mavericks, whenever you go full-screen with an application, the effect occurs only on the
display that the app resided on. (Previously, non-utilized displays showed a blank background, wasting
precious screen real estate.) Now, each display can handle a separate full-screen application. Simply go
full-screen with the application on each display you wish to run a full-screen app on.

Calendar
Calendar has lost its iconic skeuomorphic stitching and has moved into the new era of Mac and iOS applications, bringing along a cleaner
interface that also implements new features like the ability to view weather, maps, and travel time right from your appointments.

Showing Facebook Events

In OS X Mavericks, the Calendar has not only received a
physical makeover, but also a makeover in terms of the
services that it can connect with. One of those services is
Facebook. By adding your Facebook account in the System
Preferences or in Calendar > Preferences > Accounts, youll
have access to a new Calendar called Facebook Events.
Enabling this calendar in the Calendar app list sidebar means
that youll have a single place to view all of the events that
youve accepted on Facebook.

Autocomplete an Address
When adding a new event, youll notice a new dialog
that appears to accept the event information. Under
the event title, youll see a location fieldexcept this
field is different than in any other version of OS X.
When you start typing, it will automatically complete
the address using contact information stored in the
Contacts app. Continue typing the address or select
one of the addresses listed.

Add Events Travel Time

When adding an event, you now have the ability to
select a travel time for events that dont use the All
Day specifier. Events like this will show the travel
time required in the day view for the event calendar.

Viewing Map for a Calendar Event

If a calendar event has an address or location associated
with it, you will be able to view a map of the location, thanks
to the new Mapping functionality in Mavericks. Simply
double-click the calendar event in day, week, or month view
to automatically see the map. Clicking on the map will open
the Maps application with the event location zoomed in.

Continuous Scrolling in Calendar

Shifting away from its page-based look and feel, the
month view in Calendar for Mavericks implements
continuous scrolling. In month view, scroll seamlessly
between months by scrolling vertically. Scroll up to
go to the previous month, or scroll down to go to
the next month. If you use a trackpad and perform a
vertical flicking motion with two fingers, then you will
automatically scroll up or down one month.

Current Week Marker

In the month view, you may notice a red line that
runs across the calendar view for a week when
Today is shown. This bar is a current-week marker
that highlights the current week, with the current
day highlighted in a brighter color. This makes the
current week easier to spot when scrolling between
different months.

Viewing Weather for a Calendar Event

In the same Get Info panel for an event that has an associated location, you will
be able to see the temperature at the location
for the specific day(s) that the event occurs. For
future events, the high and low for the location
are presented; if the panel is shown on the day of
the event, then the current temperature will be
shown instead.

Accessibility
Not forgetting users with various abilities, Apple has improved the accessibility features in OS X. New privacy options, system-wide
captions that can be customized, and the ability to control the entire Mac with a single button can make for a better experience overall.

Accessibility Privacy Control

Applications that control your Mac for accessibility purposes used to require a

Fix Mavericks annoyances

Many users have upgraded to Mavericks from Mountain Lion with the best of intentions, but if your workflow revolved around
some of the things that changed with Mavericks, then you may be less than excited about the new features. Some of these, including full-screen apps, each display getting its own Space, and the Dock and menu bar available on multiple displays, can be tweaked
back to the way they behaved in Mountain Lion. Well show you how.

Fixing Multiple Menubars and Spaces

One of the biggest potential annoyances with Mavericks and a second
connected display is that the OS X Menubar is available on all displays, and not
just the primary one. Fortunately, Apple has included a way to turn this off,
and it fixes a second annoyance. To do this, visit System Preferences > Mission
Control, and uncheck the box labeled Displays have separate Spaces. You
may be required to log out after making this change. So, what does this change
do? Well, besides the obvious change of making each display share the Spaces
instead of giving each display its own set of Spaces, this will also remove the
Menubar from all displays except for the primary one. You can always change
this preference back to its original settings by checking this box again.

The Dashboard

Turn off App Nap

The Dashboard seems to keep hanging on after more than five

OS X iterations. While were sure it still gets used by many people,
there are a few (ourselves included) who are getting tired of
Dashboard wasting precious keyboard real estate. Heres how
to nix it from your system. Open the Terminal and type this
command, followed by the enter key:
defaults write com.apple.dashboard mcx-disabled -boolean true
Follow that up with this command followed by the enter key:
killall Dock
The deed is now done, and the Dashboard will be disabled. You
can get it back by reversing the commands true statement with a
false, then killing the Dock again:
defaults write com.apple.dashboard mcx-disabled -boolean false

App Nap is a brand-new feature of Mavericks that reduces

resources for apps in the background, in hopes of reducing
power consumption. However, some apps may behave poorly
with this new feature. If you notice erratic behavior from
your backgrounded apps, you can turn off App Nap on a
per-app basis by opening the Get Info panel for an app in your
Applications
folder. Here,
check the
box labeled
Prevent
App Nap.

Turn off Away Notifications

Notifications in Mavericks now appear on your lock
screen to show you items that happened while
you were away. This new feature can be annoying,
especially when you open your MacBook in a meeting,
only to see multiple Justin Bieber- and Miley Cyrusrelated notifications appear on your screen.
Fortunately, you can correct this by opening
System Preferences > Notifications. Here, select an
app that supports notifications, and then uncheck
the box labeled Show notifications on lock screen.

Keep Your iCloud KeYChain in SYnC

Mavericks and iCloud are changing the way people store their passwords and sync them across devices. For the average user
who doesnt implement 1Password or LastPass into their workflow, and doesnt need the advanced features that come with those
software packages, iCloud Keychain is the perfect companion. With iCloud Keychain, usernames saved on one machine will be
available on other Macs and iOS devices with the service turned on. Continue reading, and well show you how to turn this feature
on, and how to use it on both Macs and iOS devices alike.

What Are Keychain and iCloud Keychain?

Keychain is OS Xs built-in password manager, and (among other things) it keeps your passwords safe and secure for built-in
applications, including Safari, on both OS X and iOS. iCloud Keychain is a new feature of iCloud that enables your local Keychain on
your Mac and iOS devices to be synced through iCloud to all of your devices. In a nutshell, this means that a password saved on your
Mac will be available to your iOS devices, and vice versa.

Enabling iCloud Keychain

Enabling iCloud Keychain is a breeze. On your Mac, visit System Preferences >
iCloud, and check the box labeled Keychain. If this is your first time setting up
iCloud Keychain, you will be required to enter your iCloud password and verify
your account information. If this is the second device youve set up iCloud
Keychain on, youll be asked to verify your machine by sending an approval
request to one of your other Mac or iOS devices. Once this approval has been
granted, then the machine requesting approval will be able to sync its keychain.

Filling Passwords on the Mac

On the Mac, open Safari and ensure that the browser can fill in passwords. To do this, open Safari > Preferences (or press Command +
comma) > AutoFill, and check the box for Usernames and Passwords.
After this box has been checked, then you can add passwords by first attempting to log into a website. Safari will now ask if you wish
to save the password or not. If you choose to Save, then the password will be saved in your local OS X Keychain, and then subsequently
synced to iCloud through the iCloud Keychain sync. When you revisit the site,
you will automatically have your username and password entered into the
field(s) for you. No worrying about typing them in manually any longer.
You can look at the usernames and passwords that Safari manages for you
visiting Safari > Preferences >
Passwords. You can remove any
passwords you no longer need
Safari to manage in this section.

Filling Passwords on iOS Devices

In order to use your iCloud Keychain on your iOS devices, youll first need to turn on iCloud Keychain syncing
in iOS. To do this, visit Settings > iCloud > Keychain, and flip the switch to ON for the iCloud Keychain.
Youll be required to go through the same approval process as on the Mac side of things, or enter your
approval code manually. The approval code is the code that was created when you first set up iCloud Keychain.
To begin using your iCloud Keychain passwords, simply visit a site that stores your password in iCloud
Keychain. When you tap into the field to enter your username and password, a the keyboard toolbar will
now feature a button labeled AutoFill Password. Tapping
this button will cause your username and password to
automatically be filled in for you. If the username and
password do not yet exist in your iCloud Keychain, youll be
prompted to add them when submitting the login form.
You can tweak what automatically gets filled in by opening
Settings > Safari > Passwords & AutoFill. Here, you can choose
what contact information can be used to AutoFill, as well as
the ability to AutoFill names, passwords, and credit cards.

Organize Files and FOlders with tags

One of the main features of OS X Mavericks is the long-awaited tagging abilities built right into the operating system. Tags are
available in all system-owned Save panels, in the iCloud file browser, and, of course, in Finder. From viewing to searching to sorting,
tags make many tasks easier. Continue reading, and well show you how to define tag meaning, tag items, and view those tagged
files with ease in Mavericks.

Tagging Files in the Finder

Defining Tag Meaning

Tagging files in the Finder is just as easy

as managing your Tags. Right-click any
file in the Finder, and select one of your
favorite tags from those listed. If you want
to create a new tag, click the Tags item
and a popover dialog will appear, letting
you specify the name of the new tag.

Tags in Mavericks reuse the methodology of

colored labels in previous generations of OS X. You
can manage all of your existing tags and assign
or rename them in Finder > Preferences (or press
Command + comma) > Tags.
Here, all of your tags will be visible. Right-click
on any tag to delete it. Deleting a tag will simply
remove that tag from a file, and will not remove the
actual file. Click on any of the tag titles to rename
the tag to a more appropriate meaning. Here, you
can also drag any of your most-used tags to the
bottom portion of the view. This will automatically
add them to the list that appears when rightclicking a file in the Finder, for easier tagging.

Viewing Tags in Finder

Tagging in a Save Dialog

Tagging can also be done while saving
in almost any application that uses the
standard OS X save dialog. When saving
a file, youll see the new tag field that lets
you specify the name of the tag. As you
start typing, your existing tags will be
filtered, and you can select any of them
from the autocompletion to have the
document tagged with that tag.

38

M|L The uLTiMaTe guide To ioS 7 & oS X MaVeRiCKS

There are a few ways to display all tagged files for

a specific tag within the Finder. Well show you two:
through search, and through the Sidebar.
Through the search bar, type in the name of the tag
that you wish to view the files for, then select the tag
that appears in the autocompletion drop-down. All files
for that specific tag will be shown in the search results.
You can also view your most recent tags from the
Finder sidebar by first enabling the feature by going
to Finder > Preferences > Sidebar, and checking the
box labeled, Recent Tags. Your most recent tags will
appear in the Finder sidebar, and selecting one of them
will display all of the files associated with that tag.

Searching with Tags

To find tagged files via Spotlight,
enter a search term for the item
that youre looking for, then
type tag:tagname, replacing
tagname with the tag you wish to
filter using. For example, if we were
looking for a file named myfile
tagged with the mytag tag, youd
type the following into Spotlight:
myfile tag:mytag
Spotlight would then search
through all of the files tagged
mytag with the search term
myfile.

Integrate Maps Into Your WorkfloW

One of the most touted features of Mavericks is the ability to use the Maps application throughout the OS to do things like add maps to
Calendars, get directions, and even search for local points of interest. But some of the things Apple didnt go into detail on were the ability to view your maps with flyover data, view localized weather information in the calendar, print directions, and also send maps and directions to your iOS devices for viewing (or navigating) later. Continue reading, and well show you how to do these things and much more.

Getting Directions with Maps

Printing Directions

To get directions with Maps, open

the application and either tap on the
Directions button in the Toolbar, or press
Command + R. When you do this, a side
panel will appear to the right inside of the
Maps application. Usually, the starting
location will be your current location, but
you can specify a starting point by typing
in the address. Specify an end location
and press enter; youll be given the most
direct route with driving directions.
By pressing the walking button,
you can get walking directions, as well.
If multiple routes are available, you
can click on the time that appears to
switch to that route. Clicking each of
the directions in the sidebar will zoom in
the map to that point, giving you more
detailed information about the turn.

You can print two detailed maps, and

the waypoint information for turn-byturn directions so that you can use it to
navigate in your car or to have a paper
backup for your GPS. To do this, just
open the directions view (Command +
R), get directions for a start and end
location, and then press the Command +
P keys (or go to File > Print) to print a set
of pages that include two half-page maps
and the turn-by-turn directions.
If you prefer a PDF instead, then choose
File > Export PDF. Youll be prompted to
choose a save location for the PDF.

Sending Directions and Maps to iOS

Lets say youre looking up directions on your Mac and want
to view the same directions on your iOS device, but dont want
to go through the hassle of typing it into your iOS device. Well,
fortunately, Apple has you covered here in Mavericks.
Whenever you wish to send the current view of Maps to
your iOS device, simply press the share button in the toolbar
and select your iOS device. You can also go to File > Share >
Send to [iOS Device Name].
Using the power of
iCloud, your iOS device will
receive a push notification
alerting you that a new
Map is available to view
from your Mac. Opening
the Maps app will display
the same view that was
shown on your Mac.

Viewing and Navigating

with Flyover
Flyover is Apples 3D map view that
gives you real 3D photos of supported
cities. To use the Flyover view, open
the Maps application, and navigate to a
supported city (well use San Franciscos
downtown area for this example).
Once zoomed into the city, select the
Flyover button in the toolbar (or press
Command + 0) to show the flyover view.
In this view, you can pan around the
map using two fingers on your trackpad
or by clicking and dragging. You can
adjust the horizon and angle by clicking,
holding, and dragging around on the
compass that appears in the lower righthand corner of the screen.

Getting Travel Time Estimates in Calendar

The Calendar application can now figure in
your travel time when creating a new event.
To do this, open the Calendar app and
create an event as you normally would.
When you type in a location and select the
Travel Time drop-down menu, Calendar will
use the Maps integration and automatically
calculate the driving time for you. This will be
added to the events total time required.

View Weather and Maps

in Calendar
When you create a Calendar event that
has a location, the info panel for that event
will display a small map of the location, and
the projected high and low temperatures
for the scheduled day of the event.

Use AirPlAy As A second disPlAy

One of the surprising and very nice changes Apple made to OS X was the ability to use an AirPlay device as a second display for
your Mac. All Macs that supported AirPlay mirroring in OS X Mountain Lion have the ability to use AirPlay as a second display in
Mavericks. In this article, well show you how to use the AirPlay second display feature, as well as configure additional options like
changing where the audio comes from and the size of the secondary display.

Enabling AirPlay Second Display

Changing the Audio Output

To enable a second display over AirPlay, you first

need to be connected to the same network as
your Apple TV. Next, open System Preferences
> Displays, and select your Apple TV from the
AirPlay Display drop-down menu.
Once you do this, your display may flash as the
second display connection is acquired, and the
Apple TV takes over as the second display. If the
displays are mirrored, then you can correct this by
opening the Arrangement tab in System Preferences
> Displays, and ensuring that the Mirror Displays
checkbox is unchecked. In this same Arrangement
tab, you move around the displays in the pane to
ensure that they are positioned correctly, relative
to your physical space: usually side-by-side, or topdown. The primary display is denoted here by the
Menu bar on the display. The arrangement helps
with being able to drag windows from one display

ven if you have loads of experience with previous versions

of iOS, nothing can really prepare you for the shock of iOS 7.
While the foundation may be the sameneat rows of square
app icons that launch with just a tapvirtually everything else is
different, and it can take a while to absorb it all.
But aside from the obvious visual changesa new set of minimal
icons, brighter colors, and lighter fonts freshening up the somewhat
stale springboardiOS 7 brings much more to our iPhones than
a simple face-lift. Even if Jony Ive hadnt had his way with the
interface, there would still be more than enough new features to
make it one of the most significant upgrades weve ever seen.
Youll find surprises hiding around every corner. There are major
changes you cant miss and subtle enhancements that you might
overlook, but somewhere along the way youll find yourself tripping over
a new feature or gesture. Fortunately, weve scoured every pixel in iOS 7

Notification Center/Control Center

The Notification Center has gotten a whole lot smarter in iOS 7, but were
even more excited about the Control Centers palette of shortcuts

Whats Happening?
Notification Center in iOS 7 is more than just
alertseach day it will let you know whats going
on in your life and in the world. But how much or
how little is displayed is entirely up to you. Just
head over to the Notification Center settings to
toggle what you want to see.

Let There Be Light

The Control Center (accessed by swiping up on your home
screen or lock screen) is filled with goodies that needed
several taps and swipes in iOS 6, but one of the icons is
entirely new: the flashlight. Were not sure why it took six
years for Apple to add such basic functionality, but were
happy to see it. Now, if only we hadnt bought so many
different flashlight apps over the years.

Total Control
We all know that swiping down from the top of the screen
brings up the Notification Center, but Apple has added a set
of options to the bottom of the screen, too. Just swipe up and
youll reveal the Control Center, a quick-access panel with a
bevy of shortcuts to Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, and Airplay settings, to
name but a few.

Lock It Down

Stay Alert

Most of us are thrilled to be able to

access the Notification Center and
Control Center from the lock screen,
but if youd like to turn them off,
theres a slider located in each of
their respective settings.

The Notification Center doesnt

just look different in iOS 7its
better organized, too. New tabs
automatically sort your alerts into
whats happening today and what
you missed, or you can check out
everything at once like before.
Clearing things still needs precision
tapping on a little X, though.

Across the Board

Its always been a pain to have to
clear notifications on all of our
devices, and Apples finally done
something about it. Now, when
you read a message on your
iPhone, itll get rid of any stray
alerts and badges on your other
devices, such as an iPad or a Mac.

Bright Idea

Hands-Free Wiki

Trend Setter

The Control Center makes it easier

than ever to adjust the brightness
on our displays, but if youre
looking for a slightly less hands-on
way, you can ask Siri to do it for
you. You wont get the fine-tuning
that the slider gives you, but if
you need things to be about 25
percent brighter or darker, Siri can
help you out.

Since most of our web searches end

up on Wikipedia anyway, Siri has
learned to respond to the command,
Search Wikipedia for But if you
want to make sure the answers are
right, you should probably stick with
Wolfram Alpha.

Slowly but surely, Siri is becoming

the personal assistant we were
promised with the iPhone 4S. Along
with a great new interface and a
more refined voice, Siri can now tell
you whats happening on Twitter.
So youll know just how people feel
about the latest iOS 7 update.

Language Barrier

Play It Again

Before iOS 7, you had to add phonetic

names if you wanted Siri to understand
less-than-common handles. Now
itll attempt to learn those hard-topronounce names. Just say, Thats
not how you pronounce so-and-so and
Siri will attempt to learn, listening to
how you say the name and taking a few
stabs at getting it right.

Along with playing any song in your

music library, Siri can also play
iTunes Radio stations. Just tell it
what youre in the mood for and
it will automatically tune to the
right station. And itll even tell you
whats playing.

Bada Bing

Macho Man

Another major OS update, another

major slight to Google. This time, Apple
has kicked Google out as Siris default
search engine, telling it to favor Bing
results instead. While theres no way
to change it, if you tell Siri to search
Google instead, it will gladly shoot you
over to Safari to check out the results.

The classic Siri voice might sound a

bit more natural in iOS 7, but Apples
also given its personal assistant a new
gender option. Just head over to the
Siri settings and youll find an option
to choose between a female or male
voice. Just dont expect the jokes to
be any funnier.

Navigation
If youre finding it a little tricky to get around in iOS 7, youre not alone. Apple
has moved a bunch of things around, but we think youll like what theyve done

Search Engine

Swipe Back

The odd placement

of spotlight search in
iOS 6to the left of
the first home screen
made it less than ideal.
Now, its available
anywhere with a simple
swipe down from the
center of the screen. To
get rid of it, tap twice or
swipe up.

There are still buttons whenever you

need them, but iOS 7 brings a universal
back gesture to apps, just like the one
our Android friends have been rubbing in
our faces. Just swipe from the left side
of the screen in Safari, Mail, Settings,
and any other supported app, and youll
save your thumb a bit of stretching.

Kill Switch
Apple has implemented an entirely new way to multitask in iOS 7. While you
still double-tap the home button to bring up your open apps, the method of
browsing them has changed completely, as has the way to quit them. Instead
of tapping those
little Xs, just find
the problem app
and swipe up.

Full Circle
New animations can be found all over iOS 7,
and installing or updating apps is no exception.
Instead of the little blue loading bar, a white,
semi-transparent circle fills in to show the
installation progress. And for a brief moment,
youll even get to see Jony Ives icon grid.

Expanding Files

Double Kill Switch

If you have a lot of apps, you have a lot of folders, but in iOS 7, you wont
have to fill quite so many of them. Apple still doesnt allow nested folders,
but it has lifted the absurd 12- and 16-app
limits, letting you fill them with apps to
your hearts
content. You
can only see
nine at a
time, though,
so youll be
doing a lot
of swiping
to change
pages.

Multitasking always kind of worked in

landscape mode, and thats still the
case in iOS 7. When youre running an
app in landscape mode, double-tapping
the home button brings up a horizontal
app switcher that turns everything
sideways. It also makes it easy to kill
two apps at once by swiping them
away simultaneously.

Up, Up, and Away

Our iPhones already have accelerometers, magnetometers,
and gyroscopic sensors, but you wont need to buy an
iPhone 5s to enjoy this one. Apple has built an inclinometer
into iOS 7, so all of those App Store pedometers will be able
to track your elevation, too. Apples even added a level to
its much-improved Compass app to celebrate.

If youre looking for your iCloud
tabs, you can find them at the
bottom of the tab view in Safari,
which makes much more sense
when you think about it.

Hide and Seek

Searching in Safari has gotten a whole lot smarter and easier. Gone is the
separate Google field; the address bar now doubles as a unified search bar

Tubular Tabs

Password, Please

Safaris new carousel of tabs looks cool, plus its also very
functional. Not only can you see a preview of every page in an
instant, you can quickly close any tab with a swipe to the left. It sure
beats trying to tap another little X.

The new iCloud Keychain promises to

do a nice job of syncing and encrypting
our sensitive data across all our devices.
Furthermore, Safari can generate a random,
virtually impenetrable password for you.
Anytime you have a new password field to fill
in, Safari will suggest a random password for
you, making it that much harder for hackers
to crack it. And if youre using Mavericks, itll
be synced back to your Mac.

Apple introduced its own Pocketstyle viewing mode way back in iOS

precludes such an inelegant solution.
You can find it in the left corner;

Apples Other Apps

Every single app in Apples arsenal has gotten the iOS 7 treatment,
but were mostly interested in the new things they can do

Alone at Last
Apple has always had a standalone
FaceTime app for iPod touches and iPads,
but iOS 7 will bring it to the iPhone for the
first time. So, now youll know exactly how
many times the grandparents called while
you were away.

Clear and Bright

Apples new Weather app looks a whole lot different
in iOS 7, but it functions mostly as you remember,
with a few exceptions: tap the temperature to get
more detailed results, swipe left on the hourly
forecast to see the rest of the day, and pinch to
return to the main screen.

Got the Time?

Get Smart

Messages has always kept a decent record of when we start our

conversations, and the main window in iOS 7 does the same,
marking strategic messages with the date and time. But if you
want to see when each text was sent and received, simply swipe
to the left to reveal a time stamp for every bubble.

Theyre not quite as powerful as the ones in OS X, but

iOS 7 has made its mailboxes just a little smarter. Along
with VIP, Mail will automatically sort your messages
into the Flagged, Unread, To or CC, and Attachments
folders. Theyre turned off by default, though, so youll
have to tap the edit button to find them.

Day Tripper
Calendar looks nothing like its predecessor,
but you wont find many new features to
play with. Everythings mostly been given
a flat, bleached look with subtle splashes
of red. You might have a hard time finding
the agenda view, however. Just tap the
magnifying glass to get a list of all of your
upcoming appointments.

Tucked Away
You can now hide the Newsstand away
in a folder. Let us rejoice and be glad.

FaceTime has brought us that much closer to our friends and relatives, but
sometimes we just dont want people to see us. With iOS 7, Apple will essentially
offer its own version of voice over IP (VoIP), taking the FaceTime concept but
eliminating the video. Wait, so, shouldnt it be called EarTime?

Marker in the Sand

Its been with us since the beginning, but iOS 7 marks the end of Marker
Felt and Noteworthy as font options in Notes. Now the only available font
is the iOS 7-standard Helvetica.

snazzy makeover in iOS 7, with
better directional accuracy and
a super-minimal design. Plus it
has a built-in level and the best

it was a buck in the App Store,

Pass It On
Passbook was the surprise killer
feature of iOS 6, and Apples made
it even better in iOS 7. You can still
import passes through apps and
websites, of course, but now you can
scan codes, too, using you camera.
Also, you can quickly share your

Before iOS 7, if we wanted to share

ou have iOS 7. Youve learned about its new functions.

So whats next? Its time to get some new apps.
Developers continue to be hard at work on apps that
are often as good asif not better thanApples built-in
options, and many of them have been recently redesigned to
mesh nicely with iOS 7, both in terms of looks and features.
You could say that Apples apps are like old friendseven
when we go months without communicating with them, they
never forget about us, and we can always pick up right where
we left off without any hard feelingsbut like some of our
friends, Apples apps havent really matured all that much as
theyve gotten older. They may look better than they did, but
most of the ones we use every day are just as frustrating as
they were in the early days: Notes hasnt gained any formatting

or photo-clipping options. Mail still doesnt allow rules or junk

filtering. Weather cant show us live radar. Clock still relies on
dials to set alarms. And with the iOS 7 overhaul, things that we
liked about the old versions have been shifted around, and some
of our favorite featureswere looking at you, Calendarhave
been axed in the name of simplicity.
Thankfully, there are plenty of options. Ever since Apple
handed them an SDK, developers have been delivering
calculators, browsers, and cameras that bring powerful features
and fresh new designs that mesh with Apples ever-evolving
guidelines. Of course, with over a million apps to sort through,
it can be hard to find the best ones, but weve helped narrow
things down for you. So, go grab an iTunes gift card and get
ready to give yourself an app upgrade.

Weather Line

Shares 2

$2.99, iPhone

$2.99, iPhone

Meteorology apps have been experimenting with their interfaces

for years, but weve never seen anything quite like Weather Line.
Part forecaster, part
record keeper, the apps
inspired interface is kind
of like an interactive
infographic, using clean
lines and simple icons to
chart daily, weekly, and
monthly weather trends.
A precipitation predictor
lets you know how soon

umbrella, and severe
weather warnings will
alert you to any major
storms on the horizon.
But mostly youll like

of your dayeven if its
not so perfect outside.

The Apple Stocks app does a perfectly fine job keeping up

with the market swings, but if youre a bit more serious about
investing, let Shares 2 be your broker. An ioS 7 overhaul
brought a fresh new
interface that stripped
down the profit tracker
to its barest essentials,
presenting an even
simpler and more
beautiful look at your
portfolio. Big, bold
numbers put your gains
front and center, and
even if you arent trading,
you can still show your

flattened and brightened for ioS 7, but once you start punching
its slick circular numbers, youll see the difference: Theres
no equal sign. Where
most calculators merely
make our lives easier by
quickly handling complex
computations, Sumhold
puts the focus on the
numbers rather than the
equations. Problems are
automatically solved as
you type, and Sumhold
keeps a record of your
work so you can correct
any mistakes as you go

loom
FRee, UNIveRsAl

Photo stream has certainly improved in iOs 7, but it still falls

short of what we really want: to access all of our photos wherever
we are. With loom, we can do just that. On the surface its a
fantastic browser for our
camera rolls, but with
five gigabytes of free
cloud storage, automatic
syncing, and a companion
Mac app, its really much
more than that. loom
stores as many photos as
you can shoot (and wont
delete them when they get
too old), and its interface
and album layout are
second to none. And if you
have a 16GB iPhone, its
minimal storage demands
will be a dream come true.

Ridiculous Fishing may strike a much different tone than
angry Birds, but its just as
entertainingand potentially
more so, even. in this charmingly
abrasive entry, youll cast your

of fish on the way back up. Once
the creatures emerge from

For something more raucous, dont miss the amazing asphalt 8:
airborne, which is the arcade-style series best entry by a wide

supercars, with each gorgeous track punctuated by ramps that
often lead to massive, death-defying air. Gameloft recently axed

OS X MAVERICKS

How to Make More of Finder

Discover how improvements in Mavericks help you work smarter

Every new version of OS X adds some enhancements to file

management, and Mavericks is no exception. It introduces
important new features, some of which hit you at once even if
youve used previous versions of OS X, but there are others
that arent immediately obvious. Thats why weve compiled this
guide to the Finder.
Finder is always running on your Mac. Its smiley face, at the
left-hand end of the Dock, has been a key component of the Mac
desktop since the 1980s. Clicking this icon brings any Finder windows
that are open to the front, or if you dont have any open, creates a
new window. You can choose which folder appears in new windows
in Finder > Preferences > General. Mavericks lets you create tabs in
the Finderlike those in your web browserto reduce the desktop
clutter that stems from using multiple windows to manage files. When
you have a lot of this sort of work to get through, you can take the
Finder into full-screen mode to gain some much-needed extra space.
The Finders appearance can be altered in a few places. The
settings in Finder > Preferences apply to all Finder windows.

88

M|L THE ULTIMATE GUIDE TO iOS 7 & OS X MAVERICKS

Choose View > Show View Options to customize the current

folders look, or to set its appearance as the default for all other
folders. In System Preferences General pane you can set the size
of sidebar icons and other visual settings for OS X.
The toolbar at the top of all Finder windows can be modified by
right-clicking it and selecting Customize Toolbarto reveal a sheet
of controls. Drag those you want onto the toolbar.
You can change what appears in the Finders sidebar by
dragging folders into the Favorites group. AirDrop is a handy
way to share files, but it only appears on recent Macs (see bit.ly/
airdrop for a compatibility list).
One of the most significant additions in Mavericks is the ability to
tag files with keywords when you first save them, though tags can
be applied later too. Then, using either the Tags group in the sidebar
or the Finders search bar, you can easily find all files that belong to
a project or pertain to a specific subject. Read on for other features,
such as how to group files into a folder, copy them, and more.

Group Files Into a

Folder

Want to move some files into a folder fast?

Select them by dragging across their icons
(or click the first, then hold Command and
click each additional file in turn), then rightclick and choose New Folder with Selection.
Type a name, press Return and youre done.

Smart Copying

Manage Sidebar Tag

Quick Tip for Tags

Previously, when you tried to copy a

file into a folder containing another file with
the same name, you had to choose between
the two. Now you can keep both. If you click
Keep Both Files, one has copy added to its
name, so the two can co-exist.

Create Tabs

Press Command + T to add a tab to

the current window. Keyboard shortcuts
for switching tabs are shown in the
Window menu, but those used in Safari
(Shift + Command + [ and Shift +
Command + ]) also work. Choose Window >
Merge All Windows to gather all Finder
windows into tabs in a single window.

Tag Files

Apps that use the save dialogue

provide a tag boxpress Return after
each word or phrase, or click in the box and
choose from tags created previously. New
tags are added to the Tags group in the
Finder sidebar unless you turn off Finder >
Preferences > Sidebar > Recent Tags.

Tag Existing Files

Select a file and press the Tag button

in the toolbar for a pop-up list of existing
tags, and a box to add new ones. In the
Finders column view, right-click a column
heading to add one that shows tags. In other
views, press Command + I to see what tags
are applied to the selected file.

Choose Finder > Preferences and click Tags. The order of tags in the Finders sidebar
changes when you drag them up and down in this list. Click a tag to rename it. If you rightclick a tag and choose Delete Tag, youll be told how many items the tag will be removed
from. The color tags can be renamed, and you can assign colors to own tags by right-clicking
them. The Finder overlays up to three colored circles next to a files name if you apply
different tags. Tags with a dashed checkbox to their right are currently visible in the Finders
sidebar, but might disappear if you use others more often. Put a tick in the box to ensure this
doesnt happen. Clear the box to remove a tag from the sidebar, or right-click the tag in the
Finder and choose Remove from Sidebar.

Up to seven tags can be dragged to the spots at the

bottom of Finders Tags pane to make them available in the
menu that appears when you right-click a file in the Finder.

How to Set Up an iCloud Keychain

Access website logins and bank cards on all your Apple devices
Remembering login details for a multitude of websites isnt easy.
Passwords either end up being difficult to remember, or you
make them too simple. Safari and many other web browsers can
save your credentials so you can set a stronger password and
never have to memorize it.
You might want to log into the same websites on an iPhone,
iPad, iPod touch, or another Mac. iCloud Keychain saves you
from having to enter the same login details on all of your
devices. It can remember bank card details as wellbut it wont
store the security code from the signature strip. Apple says your
keychain is protected with 256-bit AES encryption.

90

M|L THE ULTIMATE GUIDE TO iOS 7 & OS X MAVERICKS

With Keychain set up, the first time you log into a website from
one of your devices, it asks whether you want it to record your
details. This isnt compulsory, and you might refuse for sites that
contain sensitive data. However, if you allow details to be stored,
theyre synced to iCloud Keychain. From there, theyre sent to
your other devices, saving you the hassle of having to type them
again. When you visit one of those sites, Safari fills out the login
form. All you have to do is tap a button to submit them. (Note:
Some sites ask your browser not to save passwords. If you want to
override this, click Passwords in Safaris preferences and tick the
AutoFill option at the bottom.) BY ALAN STONEBRIDGE

worldmags.net
worldmags.net

Turn the Key

Open System Preferences and click

the iCloud icon (well assume youre already
signed into your account). Scroll down the
list of features and turn on the Keychain
option, enter the password for your Apple ID
when asked for it, and click the OK button.

Risky Business

Bank Cards

Choosing to have no security code

doesnt make your account less secure,
but its troublesome if you have only
one device and it gets lost or becomes
inoperable. You wont be able to set up
Keychain on a replacement device and will
have to start over from scratch.

Also under AutoFill is an option to

remember bank cards. Cards can be removed
and amended by clicking the adjacent Edit
button. If Safari recognizes youve entered
card details in a form, it offers to store them
except the signature strips security code.

Set a Security
Code

Enter a four-digit security code (or see step

3 for stronger options). If you forget
it, Keychain cant be set up without resetting
the online copyan existing copy can be
retained on your Mac to start over, though.
Enter a code, press Next, then confirm it.

Verification Codes

Sync Across Devices

Enter a mobile phone number

that can receive SMS messages and click
Done to finish. Keychain is now ticked in
iClouds preferences. Messages are only
sent when you try to enable Keychain
on another device, which requires a
verification code from the SMS.

Set a Stronger Code

Autofill in Safari

Alternatively, click Advanced to set a

more complex code that can contain letters
and symbols, or to have a complex,
24-character code generated for youyoull
probably want to write that one down and
keep it somewhere safe, because it will be
hard to memorize.

In Safaris preferences, click AutoFill

and tick User names and passwords.
When you log into a website, Safari asks
whether to save your credentials to iCloud
Keychain. This isnt compulsory for every
websiteyou might exclude online banking
sites, for example.

When you enable Keychain on another

Mac running Mavericks or an iPhone, iPad, or
iPod touch with iOS 7, youre asked to approve
the action from a device on which its already
set up, or by sending a verification code to the
mobile phone you specified in step 5.

How to Share with Airdrop

Send things directly to the people around you
AirDrop is a convenient way to share things with people close to you.
That is, nearby in the physical sense. It establishes a direct, encrypted
connection between iOS 7 devices over Bluetooth or Wi-Fi. Perhaps you
want to send an iPhone picture to a friend privately rather than posting
it on Facebook, or maybe you need to pass on your rsum. It only
takes a few taps, and you dont have to connect to a Wi-Fi network and
clutter the other persons email inbox.
However, there are restrictions. It only works between recent
devicesiPhone 5 and newer, iPad mini, and the fourth-gen iPad with
Retina displayand they must be running iOS 7. Also, despite sharing
a name with a similarly presented feature in OS X, AirDrop on iOS can
neither send to nor receive from Macs.
The ability to share is built into many apps that come with iOS. You can
share a link to a web page, photos, notes, your location or directions, and
other documents and data from apps downloaded from the App Store.
Beware of what youre sharing, though. While you can share your own
or someone elses details from the Contacts app, no provision is made to
restrict which details are sent. BY Al StoneBridge

Check Your
Appearance

If you dont have photos for many people

in the Contacts app, tap Twitter or
Facebook in the Settings app. If youre
signed into either network, tap the option
to update contacts. Where iOS finds a
match based on details in Contacts and
your online friends, it downloads profile
pictures to the contacts.

92

M|L THE ULTIMATE GUIDE TO iOS 7 & OS X MAVERICKS

Share with Friends

Swipe up to reveal Control Center.

This works on the Lock screen and in
apps (unless youve disabled the option
in Settings > Control Center). Tap AirDrop
and choose Contacts Only. Bluetooth
and Wi-Fi are turned on. If you turn off
either, AirDrop is also switched off. You and
nearby contacts whose devices are signed
into iCloud are visible to each other.

Share with Anyone

To share with someone not among

your Contacts and who doesnt use iCloud,
choose Everyone. Its risky to leave this
setting on, though, because anyone can send
you improper pictures. AirDrop gets disabled
when Bluetooth or Wi-Fi is switched off, but
its settings are remembered and re-enabled
next time both connections are on.

Sharing Web Pages

Tap the action button (the arrow

coming from a square in the bottom toolbar)
to share something. The pane that appears
shows nearby people who have made
themselves visible to you over AirDrop. If
you cant see your recipient, ask them to
open Control Center; this often rebroadcasts
a persons availability. Tap the icon when it
appears and wait for them to accept.

Receiving Web Links

When you receive a link to a web

page, a preview of the page is shown.
Accepting receipt opens the link in Safari.
If you decline it, the sender is informed or
Failed appears if the transfer goes wrong.
If your device is locked, you see a preview
of whats being sent to you. Swipe across
to unlock your device and see a larger
preview, then accept/decline.

Sharing Photos

In the Photos app, view the image

you want to share and tap the action button
at the bottom. Or, in Moments view, tap
Select at the top-right corner, tap several
photos you want to share, and tap the action
button. Both reveal the usual panel, but the
former also shows your photos in a scrolling
strip. Tap someones icon to send the
selected pictures to them.

Receiving Photos

When someone tries to send photos,

AirDrop tells you how many youll receive, but
it only shows one of them. Theres no
discernible pattern to which picture you see.
Accepting adds the pictures to the Camera
Roll and takes you to it in the Photos app.
Theyre also uploaded to Photo Stream if that
feature is enabled in Settings > iCloud.

Sharing in
Other Apps

Not all apps have the action buttons icon.

For example, at the bottom of someones
details in Contacts are the words Share
Contact. Pages, Numbers, and Keynote
are less direct. Tap Edit at the top of the
list of documents, then tap the documents
to share. Tap the action button, choose
Open in Another App, and the format. Tap
Choose App to pick a recipient.

Receive from
Other Apps

iOS cant show you a preview of items sent

from apps you dont have, unless you have
an app thats compatible (e.g., photos from
Camera+ go to the Photos app). Instead,
AirDrop lets you reject the item, or to go
to the required app in the App Store. You
have to tap through to see whether it costs
money, if the sender cant tell you for sure.

How to Create Parental iPhone Laws

Now you wont have to live in fear when your children are using your iPhone
Whether youre lending your iPhone to your children or setting
up an iPhone of their own, you need to be sure theyll be safe
using it. If theyre tech-savvy older children, you might want to
ensure they wont be visiting inappropriate websites, installing
and playing unsuitable games, or running up huge bills buying
extras as in-app purchases (IAPs).
Simply put, an IAP is extra content or features you buy within
an app, as distinct from in the App Store itself. IAPs are widely
used to unlock added features, or to buy virtual goods. In games,
for example, you might pay to unlock levels, acquire extra lives or
power-ups, and so on. Some free apps turn out to be sparse
samplers or near-empty containers, requiring you to pay for
the actual content.
This is not to say theres anything inherently bad about IAPs
they can be a perfectly fair and reasonable way to offer you extra
content or optional modules you might not need or want to pay for
up front, such as additional languages in a language-learning app,
for example. The catch is youre spending real money, which might
not be immediately obvious, particularly to younger children or
when an IAP option appears in the context of a game.
The simplest and safest option is often to disable IAPs entirely,
which is easily done using your iPhones Restrictions settings.
Youll find these by opening the Settings app and tapping General
> Restrictions. As well show you here, these include the options to
disallow access to a range of apps one by one, and even to block
Internet access completely by blocking Safari. This last option,
however, wont always be suitablefor example, when the children
involved are older or need to use the iPhone to find information
online. The alternative can be to set age-rating-based restrictions,
which can apply to apps, websites, or content of various sorts.
Its not possible to set up multiple user accounts on one
iPhone and switch between them, as you can on your Mac. Any
restrictions and settings apply globally on that device until you
change them (although well show you how to ensure only you can
do this).
It is, however, possible to set up a separate App Store account
for a child (13 or over) and either set an allowance for this account
or stop it from downloading paid apps at all. This gives your
children a certain degree of independence, and might be ideal if
youre setting up an iPhone for them to use on their own, but want
to prevent unexpected bills.
If you want your kids to have a paid-for app once youve set up
an Apple ID for them, you can gift the app from another Apple
ID. Sign in to the Store with the other ID (your own), find the app,
tap Share, then Gift, and enter the email address of the childs
account. To set up an allowance, tap Send iTunes Gifts under Quick
Links. Tap Learn more, scroll down, tap Set Up An Allowance, and
enter your childs Apple ID (or set one up). BY ALEX SUMMERS

Enable
Restrictions

To access your iPhones

parental controls, tap Settings

then tap Enable Restrictions.
Youre now asked to set a
Restrictions passcode, which
you need to enter if you want
to make any changes to the
restrictions later. Make sure
it is not the same as the
passcode you use to switch
on or wake your iPhone, since
theres every chance this
might be the first password
your child thinks to enter!

worldmags.net
worldmags.net

Allow or
Disallow Apps

You can now disable key apps and features,

including Safari, Camera, FaceTime, Siri, and
AirDrop. You can also opt to block the three
stores, too; disabling iTunes and the iBooks
Store is a pretty simple process, but in order
to block the App Store you need to disable
Installing Apps. There are separate
switches to prevent users deleting apps or
making In-App Purchases, so you can switch
off whatever number or combinations
of features you want. Set a switch to Off
and the relevant app immediately vanishes
from the Home screen.

Set Age Rating

Limits

In the Allowed Content section, you can

set age-related limits for different types
of content on your iPhone, and this
includes apps. Every app has an age rating.
Locating them is very simple: search for
the app in the App Store, tap its icon
and then scroll down to the Information
section. Limiting apps by age rating hides
those rated for older users from your
Home screen, and also prevents users
from downloading them from the App
Store (however, they still show up in any
search results on the App Store).

By default, when you buy an item in the App

Store or as an In-App Purchase, you can buy
more without re-entering your password for
15 minutes. This is obviously convenient for
adults, but if you buy something for your
kids and then hand them the device, this
means they have 15 minutes of free rein to
wreak havoc with your account. To prevent
this, tap Require Password and change
the time setting to Immediately. Now, the
password must be entered every time you
want to make a purchase, no matter how
recently the last one was authorized.

Privacy Options

Under Privacy, you can prevent

apps from accessing your location,
contacts, calendars, reminders, Twitter
and Facebook information, or sharing data
over Bluetooth. For example, if you want
your kids to be able to find their location
in Maps, set Maps to on but other apps to
off. Then tap Dont Allow Changes to lock
these settings in place.

Disallow Changes

Under Allow Changes you can

decide to lock in the current settings for
your personal accounts (Mail, Contacts,
and Calendars), Find Friends, and some
other features not covered elsewhere. If
you tap Dont Allow Changes in any of the
categories, apps and users wont be able to
add, modify, or delete accounts or modify
iCloud settings in that category.

Password Required
Immediately

Game Center
Options

The final set of Restrictions relate to Game

Center. Switch Multiplayer Games off and
users wont be able to request a match,
send or receive invitations to play games, or
add friends in Game Center. Switch Adding
Friends off and they cant make or receive
friend requests in Game Center, but if
Multiplayer Games is on, they can continue
to play with existing friends.
