For the Dogs Has a Whole New Meaning

[1] Lisa Cornbish is rattling off todays menu:
Pan-seared duck with brown rice and blueberry compote.
Roasted turkey with butternut squash and russet potatoes.
Salmon with black-and-white quinoa.
Delicious. Just keep in mind that all of this, right down to those banana and yogurt health bars, is dog food.
5
Not mere Alpo, mind you not by a long shot. And to prove it, Ms. Cornish, who works for a company
called Petcurean Pet Nutrition, will give you a taste.
[2] If youre wondering why anyone would even consider noshing on dog food, you havent been to the
Global Pet Expo here, where the impresarios of Americas thriving, multibillion-dollar pet economy profitably
10

ply their wares.

[3] If there is a pet heaven, this could be it. Even as the economy for us humans bogs down again, the pet
economy has proved remarkably resilient to a weak housing market and high unemployment. The industry has
continued to grow through the recession and last year, Americans spent a record $55 billion on their pets,
according to the market research firm Packaged Facts, more than the gross domestic product of Belarus.

15

[4] Wherever the stock market goes and lately, it has been going down this nation seems to be in the
thrall of a great bull market for pets. And high-priced, human grade pet food is only the beginning.
[5] Pet owners, or parents in industry parlance, are being sold on human-style luxuries and medical care.
There are stylish rain slickers, organic foods and even antidepressants for todays pampered cats and dogs. If
more evidence of this boom were needed, consider Neuticles, prosthetic testicles for neutered dogs and cats, at

20

about $1,000 a pair, which, their designers say, help your pet to retain his natural look, self esteem and aids in
the trauma associated with altering.
[6] Make no mistake: this is big business, as a visit to the Pet Expo here shows. Over at one booth, Debbie
Bohlken, owner of Claudias Canine Cuisine, sits behind a table of brightly-decorated cookies and cakes that
wouldnt look out of place in a bakery. All of these treats are for dogs. She sells her products under the slogan:

25

Treat Her Like the Bitch She Really Is. Will you try one? she asks. Her dog biscuits, it turns out, taste a
bit like ginger snaps.
[7] Elsewhere, manufacturers are marketing foods with ingredients worthy of a Michelin-starred restaurant:
pheasant, freshwater trout, yaks milk, organic pumpkin the list goes on.
[8] There is much more to this than food. At the Petzlife booth, one of the owners, Steve Tibbetts, explains that

30

his oral spray is made from human-grade ingredients that keep a dogs teeth and gums healthy and fight dog

breath. He says it works for cats, too. And apparently, for people: Mr. Tibbetts sprays the stuff into his mouth.
Twice.
[9] People are just ga-ga over their pets, Mr. Tibbetts says. Theyll spend money on their pets before they
spend money on themselves. The growth in the pet market last year was driven in part by a 10 percent
35

increase in veterinary services. Americas pet population, like its human one, is living longer. Human medical
technologies are increasingly being used for pets. Dogs and cats owners particularly those without
children at home are taking better care of them, both medically and nutritionally, experts say.
[10] Pet owners arent just looking to provide a home for their pets, says Bob Vetere, president of the
American Pet Products Association. They are investing in their pets quality of life. Oftentimes they do this at

40

their own expense, cutting personal expenses, but not those affecting their faithful companions.
[11] Jessica Taylor, managing editor of Petfood Industry, says that when she started at the magazine three
years ago, the pet food industry lagged human trends by a year or more. Now, it is just six months behind, or
less. She predicts that blueberries and pomegranates, whose antioxidant wonders have been marketed to
humans in recent years, will be the next big thing in pet food.

45

[12] The pet industry has long considered itself recession-resilient, and it proved just that during the recent
downturn, despite some bumps along the way. For instance, shelters were swamped with pets that were given
up by owners who apparently could no longer afford them. Fewer people bought pets, in part because pets are
often acquired after a home purchase, and there were considerably fewer of those.
[13] Analysts say the pet industry will continue to rebound, driven by demand for veterinary care and

50

health-related products, including premium treats and chow for dogs and cats.
[14] Im still very bullish on natural and organic, says David Lummis, senior pet market analyst for
Packaged Facts, noting that such products account for about 8 percent of pet food sales. There is still a lot of
growth there. In addition, he notes that expected demand for luxury pet products is strong enough to lure
companies and even celebrities into the business.

55

[15] The pet store chain, PetSmarts main competitor, Petco, is privately owned and doesnt publicly report its
earnings. However, Jim Myers, Petcos chief executive, says his company did not have a single negative
quarter throughout the recession. Fewer people traded up to more expensive items during the downturn, but he
said they didnt trade down, either, sticking with a premium and higher-level range of food products. Our
perspective is that, thankfully, we are in a pretty emotional category, Mr. Myers says.

60

[16] At a Petco store in West Orange, N.J., natural and organic products occupy more than half the aisles set
aside for dog and cat food. A sign hanging from the ceiling reads, Its all natural: the very best natural
products for your pet.

MIAWONGMIAWONGMIAWONGMIAWONGMIAWONGMIAWONGMIAWONGMIAWONGMIAWON

[17] A representative for Blue Buffalo dog food, Gina Corbosiero, is to pitch an array of products, which she
says are holistic and contain antioxidant pellets that are cold pressed. Blue Buffalos dog food costs as
65

much as $4 a pound, but it isnt the most expensive line on these shelves. Royal Canin makes dog food for
specific breeds. Its Shih Tzu line sells for $6.80 a pound. Lowly Pedigree, by comparison, costs 50 cents a
pound.
[18] Are our pets healthier for all of this? Tony Buffington, a professor of veterinary nutrition at Ohio State
University, says his students have studied the diet history of thousands of animals and have not yet determined

70

that one pet food is better than another. We have been unable to distinguish an outcome in healthy animals
eating a wide variety of foods, he says. Asked about the variety at megastores like Petco, he says, I dont
even go in there anymore. I wouldnt know where to start. He adds: If you put them all in a plain brown
bag, youd probably be fine with any one of them.
[19] About 60 percent of American households have a pet, with dogs accounting for 40 percent of the total.

75

Cats are second, at 35 percent. Dog and cat ownership has continued to grow slightly in recent years, even as
the popularity of other types of pets, like birds, fresh-water fish and reptiles, has declined.
[20] However, the vendors at the Global Pet Expo, held at the Orange County Convention Center here in
April, are betting that pet owners will splurge again. One vendor is offering treadmills and treadwheels
essentially oversize hamster wheels that let dogs exercise indoors, without the indignities of cracked

80

sidewalks or rain. There are eco-friendly pieces of furniture, grooming products and wipes, the wipes made
from organically grown bamboo.
[21] We actually saw that there was a gap in the market for beverages for dogs, says Bonnie Senior, a
manager at the company. Then there is Jenn Mohr, who says she combined her love of dogs and love of
candles to create Sniff Pet Candles. Made of 100 percent organic natural ingredients, the aromatherapy

85

candles have names like Day in the Hamptons and Field of Dreams and promote your dogs optimum
health and well-being, her company says.
[22] Canine Caviar Foods says it makes the only alkaline-based dog food in America that was specifically
designed to prevent cancer. The ingredients include canned beaver, duck and venison tripe for dogs and cats,
as well as a variety of free-range, grass fed buffalo treats for dogs.

90

[23] The Honest Kitchen is offering dog food with names like Zeal and Verve and lists the provenance of
the ingredients. There is organic, fair-trade quinoa from Bolivia and wild, line-caught Icelandic haddock. Its
food is gently dehydrated to preserve it.
[24] Hills Science Diet promotes prepackaged meals to help slim down tubby dogs and cats. American pets, it
turns out, have weight problems just like many of their owners. We show you how to feed your animal to lose

MIAWONGMIAWONGMIAWONGMIAWONGMIAWONGMIAWONGMIAWONGMIAWONGMIAWONGMIAWONG

95

weight, says Mike Gooch, a sales manager for Hills Science Diet. Its really kind of a paradigm shift in how
you control the weight of the animal.
[25] Of course, it would be easier and substantially cheaper to feed pets less or take them for longer
walks. But Mr. Gooch said that simply isnt happening for pets or owners. I would like to see us eat less
McDonalds and Hardees, Mr. Gooch quips.

100

[26] Bravo Raw Diet is peddling raw food for pets, which, along with refrigerated pet food, is among the
hottest trends in the business. Bette Schubert, a co-founder, says dogs that eat raw meat diets much like
their wild ancestors are healthier than those that eat processed kibbles.
[27] These days, pet food makers are eating their own products to make a point and close a sale, wisecracks
aside. Ms. Bohlken, of Claudias Canine Cuisine, says she ate all sorts of dog treats while tweaking recipes for

105

her products, which now include cookies and microwaveable cakes for dogs. Even now, she says, she will
suck on a Puppy Pop when she has a sore throat.
[28] Up in Brooklyn, Hanna Mandelbaum and Alison Wiener spent March dining on their dog food,
Evermore, a brown mush made from beef hearts and chicken livers, among other things. My business partner
really enjoys the taste, Ms. Mandelbaum says. For me, it was a little bit more an acquired taste.

110

[29] The gimmick generated a huge spike in sales but came at a price: relentless ribbing from friends. Says
Ms. Mandelbaum: They want to know if we have a sudden urge to sniff each others bottom.

Monitoring Your Health With Mobile Devices

[1]

Dr. Eric Topol is only half joking when he says the smartphone is the future of medicine because most of his

patients already seem surgically connected to one.

[2]

However, he says in all seriousness that the smartphone will be a sensor that will help people take better control of

their health by tracking it with increasing precision. His book, The Creative Destruction of Medicine, lays out his vision

for how people will start running common medical tests, skipping office visits and sharing their data with people other
than their physicians.

[3]

Dr. Topol, a cardiologist at the Scripps Medical Institute in La Jolla, Calif., is already seeing signs of this as

companies find ways to hook medical devices to the computing power of smartphones. Devices to measure blood pressure,
monitor blood sugar, hear heartbeats and chart heart activity are already in the hands of patients. More are coming.

10

[4]

He acknowledges that some doctors are skeptical of these devices. Of course, the medical profession doesnt like

D.I.Y. anything, he said. There are some really progressive digital doctors who are recognizing the opportunities here for
better care and prevention, but most are resistant to change.

[5]

Dr. Topol may be right about the caution in the industry, but he is far from the only person with this vision. Apple

was promoting the iPhone as a platform for medical devices. An entire marketplace is evolving that marries the can-do

15

attitude of hacking devices with the fervor of the wellness movement.

[6]

Smartphones make taking care of yourself more of a game, Dr. Topol said. I recommend these devices because it

makes it more fun and I get readings of my medical condition more easily.

[7]

The enthusiasm for this vision of do-it-yourself medicine with a smartphone, though, must be balanced with the

cold reality that all of the experimenters should consult with their physicians. Some of the attempts to turn the iPhone into

20

a medical device are little more than toys. The 99-cent iStethoscope Pro app warns, This app is intended to be used for
entertainment purposes. Those who have bought it have given it uniformly poor reviews.

[8]

The equally poorly reviewed iStethoscope Expert, also 99 cents, offers a $24 bell to enhance the sound.

[9]

I experimented with a homemade otoscope, the device doctors use to look into the ears, connected to a smartphone

so I could take pictures of a family members eardrums. My son has had infections in his Eustachian tube and the doctor
likes to take a look. I figured that if I could take a picture or a video of the eardrum, I could save the trouble of him
missing school to visit the doctor. With the help of a little duct tape, I attached the phone to a small home otoscope from a
company called Dr. Mom Otoscopes. It is just a lens, a light source and a plastic sleeve and sells for $27. To improve the

MIAWONGMIAWONGMIAWONGMIAWONGMIAWONGMIAWONGMIAWONGMIAWONGMIAWON

image, I inserted a $20 close-up lens I had bought from Photojojo.com.

[10]

30

The biggest problem was in the software of the smartphone. The Apple camera app balanced the light and dark over

the entire image, washing out the center so the eardrum was just a sea of white. The Android camera app offered the option
of using spot metering so the light balance was better. Despite all this fiddling with the optics and the software, the result
was never very good. Better results require more than duct tape.

[11]

Firefly Global in Belmont, Mass., makes a medical camera and sells it directly to doctors who want to share the

images with patients and save them for the future. Its line includes cameras for dentists, dermatologists and

35

ophthalmologists. Unfortunately, the $180 to $350 cameras connect to a computer, not a smartphone.

[12]

The most prevalent diseases and the biggest markets are getting the tools first. Devices to monitor heart disease are

already available. A French start-up, Withings, has created a blood pressure cuff for $129 that connects to an iPad or an
iPhone. The cuff will automatically inflate, deflate and then record the pulse rate and the blood pressure. The app will
graph the pressure over time, making trends easier to see.

40

[13]

Withings also includes a connection to its Web site so users can share their data with their doctors either directly

through their password-protected pages or through third-party sites like digifit.com.

[14]

The growing incidence of diabetes is by many estimates the biggest public health challenge today, so companies are

developing tools to help people with the disease manage their blood sugar.

[15]

45

Tom Xu, the founder of SkyHealth in El Cerrito, Calif., created the Web site glucosebuddy.com to help people keep

track of the sugar in their blood. The numbers must be entered manually. The site works with an app for the iPhone to
gather the blood glucose level and some information about when it was taken. Our main goal of glucosebuddy is not to
just record numbers. Thats the boring part, he said. Once you know how your diet affects your blood sugar, you take
your health more seriously.

[16]

50

Other companies are beginning to integrate the hardware and software. AgaMatrix, a company that makes a blood

glucose monitor, iBGStar, that attaches to the iPhone, worked with Sanofi, the pharmaceutical giant, to develop the tool.
The Food and Drug Administration approved the device for sale in the United States.

[17]

When patients are dealing with chronic conditions, you might see a doctor every six weeks or two months, said

Joseph Flaherty, the senior vice president for marketing at AgaMatrix. For people to have real command over these
diseases, we need to close the feedback loop and give people the information they need to make smarter decisions in real

55

time.

[18]

Its tool, like many other pocket meters, measures the amount of glucose in the blood, but it also transfers the data to

the smartphone, which helps patients to track their glucose levels over time. It is not much different from a piece of paper
and a pen, but it is faster and cleaner, and it is easy to share these values with doctors and friends.

[19]

60

Johnson & Johnson has also spoken publicly about developing a similar device. The ultimate goal is replicating the

full-body diagnostic tricorder from the Star Trek TV show, a goal that is being encouraged by a $10 million prize put
up by Qualcomm, the smartphone chip maker, through the X-Prize Foundation.

Sleep Your Way to Better Heart Health

[1]

Lack of sleep can do more than make you cranky it could shorten your lifespan. New research suggests that

sleeping less than six to eight hours a night leads to an increased risk of heart attack and stroke.

[2]

The risk of heart disease can increase as much as 50 percent and the risk of stroke by 15 percent when a person

regularly doesnt get a minimum of six hours of sleep, scientists from the U.K.s University of Warwick recently revealed.

The researchers found that chronic sleep shortages produce hormones and chemicals in the body that increase the risk of
cardiovascular disease.

[3]

Researchers studied 500,000 people from eight countries, including the U.S., U.K., Japan, and Sweden, and found

that the demands of the modern workplace and family are taking a toll.

[4]

10

The trend for late nights and early mornings is actually a ticking time bomb for our health, researcher Francesco

Cappuccio told the BBC. So you need to act now to reduce your risk of developing these life-threatening conditions.

[5]

The study suggests that sleep deprivation also contributes to high cholesterol, high blood pressure, diabetes, and

obesity. And it introduces the ways of looking younger than you actually are. Ready to fool the eye? Heres how no
facelift required!

Mainland Chinese Flock to Hong Kong to Give Birth

[1]

For years, Hong Kongers have nursed complaints about the growing parade of visitors to their city from mainland

China. The mainlanders spit, litter, jaywalk and cut in line, the locals grouse; they talk too loudly, eat on the subway and
otherwise flout Hong Kongs more refined standards of public behaviour. Those are quibbles, though, compared with the
uproar over the latest mainland invasion: pregnant women flocking here to give birth.

[2]

The appeal of Hong Kong, a former British colony that is now a semiautonomous Chinese region, is understandable.

Medical care here is far superior to what is found in most of China. Chinese children born here automatically receive the
right to permanent residency in Hong Kong, entitling them to 12 years of free education and other benefits that are not
available to mainlanders, including visa-free travel to many foreign countries. Some parents also sidestep Chinas
family-planning rules, which limit most couples to one child, by having their second child born offshore.

10

Hong Kong residents, though, are outraged that local pregnant women are being shut out of maternity wards

[3]

because mainlanders have snapped up the beds. Despite official quotas on maternity care for nonresidents, nearly 4 in 10
births in Hong Kong last year were to mainland parents. Residents are demanding a crackdown, and a hard look at the
residency rights law.

The controversy epitomizes Hong Kongs tetchy relationship with the rest of China after the end of British colonial

[4]

15

rule in 1997. On the one hand, Hong Kong has courted mainland visitors for economic reasons, and has benefited
enormously. About 28 million mainlanders came last year and many of them to shop: sales of electronics, jewelry and
other luxury goods in Hong Kong have soared. As recently as a few years ago, city officials saw mainland mothers-to-be
as a revenue stream as well, and urged hospitals to accommodate them.

However, the seven million residents of Hong Kong increasingly fear that mainlanders are challenging them for

[5]

20

services, for property and to some extent for their cultural identity. Many suspect that wealthier mainlanders see Hong
Kong as an escape option, for their children if not themselves, should confidence in Chinas future fade.

[6]

The irony of it is that Mainland buyers accounted for nearly one-fifth of the value of Hong Kong residential

apartments sold last year, and are one reason that prices are soaring. The number of schoolchildren commuting to Hong
Kong schools from Shenzhen, a sprawling mainland urban area just north of the border, has tripled in five years.

25

[7]

The issue is the capacity of society to accept so many travelers, said Ivan Choy, a senior instructor in public

administration at the Chinese University of Hong Kong. The issue of the maternity beds has pushed it past the tipping
point.

[8]

Insults are flying. A shouting match erupted last month after one mainland mother allowed her child to eat noodles

in a Hong Kong subway car. When a Peking University professor who saw a video of the incident called Hong Kongers

30

dogs on an Internet talk show, furious Hong Kong residents demonstrated outside the Chinese governments liaison
office. A liaison official later condemned the professors remarks, which by official Chinese standards was an
extraordinary apology.

[9]

Angry Hong Kongers have taken to calling mainland visitors locusts. After some residents bought a full-page

newspaper advertisement showing a giant locust looming over the Victoria Harbour and declaring that Hong Kongers

35

have had enough, mainlanders responded with a mock advertisement urging China to cut off water and power supplies to
the city.

[10]

Some scholars argue that the friction is essentially a family squabble among compatriots who are actually growing

closer. Hong Kong residents are becoming more, not less, Chinese, said Michael DeGolyer, director of the Hong Kong
Transition Project, a research group that tracks political trends. Few Hong Kongers pledge loyalty to Chinas Communist

40

Party, Mr. DeGolyer said. A solid majority want to preserve Hong Kongs pluralistic, international character. Still, he said,
most now support a requirement that schoolchildren sing Chinas national anthem and raise the Chinese flag daily. From
a variety of indicators, we see that attachment to China has strengthened, Mr. DeGolyer said.

[11]

However, others sense a widening divide. More Hong Kong residents have identified themselves primarily as Hong

Kong citizens than primarily as Chinese citizens, according to surveys by the University of Hong Kongs Public Opinion

45

Program.

[12]

Hospitals are a major battleground, partly because Hong Kongs are so much better. Maternal mortality is 15 times

higher on the mainland than in Hong Kong. Infant mortality is 13 times higher.

[13]

One morning this month, the maternity floor of Precious Blood Hospital, a private institution in an older Hong

Kong neighborhood, bustled with pregnant mainland women, their relatives and the agents they had hired to arrange care

50

and obtain visas. One agent juggled three cellphones and a notebook on her lap, desperately trying to secure a bed for a
mainlander who was due to give birth in September.

[14]

If I can afford the medical costs of my wife giving birth in Hong Kong, why not? asked a 38-year-old building

designer from Shenzhen who would give only his surname, Yue. He said he paid about 80,000 Hong Kong dollars (more
than $10,000) so that his first child, a boy, would be born in the city. Resentment from Hong Kongers did not faze him. If

55

mainland tourists didnt come here, he said quietly, the economy would collapse. Hong Kong residency for his son was
not a deciding factor, he said, because he suspects the city will be progressively integrated with the mainland. Maybe in
20 years, it will not mean anything, he said.

[15]

Another father-to-be seemed mostly to want a residency card for his baby. He and his newly pregnant wife traveled

nearly 1,000 miles from Wuxi to inspect Precious Blood. One of my friends is going to England to give birth, he said.

If you give birth on the plane and the plane is in U.K. airspace, you have U.K. citizenship.

[16]

Maggie Wong, 31, an office clerk and lifelong Hong Kong resident who had twins eight months ago, said she felt

pushed aside by mainland couples. Three and a half months into her pregnancy, Ms. Wong said, she tried to schedule
delivery at the public hospital near her home, but they said there were so many mainland mothers that the beds were all
full. So she went to a private hospital, though it meant spending her husbands life savings and borrowing from his

65

parents. I am a citizen of Hong Kong. I pay Hong Kong taxes, she said. I kept thinking, What is this? How can this
be? Of course it creates bad feelings.

[17]

Hong Kong has lowered quotas for mainlander births again this year, and has tightened its border checks in hopes

of preventing last-minute cross-border runs to hospitals. Of the 36,000 mainland women who gave birth in Hong Kong last
year, 1,700 simply showed up in emergency rooms.

70

[18]

Tensions may grow. It is the year of the dragon, considered one of the luckiest. If tradition holds, the birth rate will

spike. Private Hong Kong hospitals are said to be booked into October. I want a dragon baby! Lui Dikming, a freelance
artist, yelled during a demonstration outside a government building this month. But even if you book when you are five
weeks pregnant, there is no room.

Text 7
Youre Beautiful by James Blunt
My life is brilliant.
My life is brilliant.
My love is pure.
I saw an angel.

Of that Im sure.
She smiled at me on the subway.
She was with another man.
But I wont lose no sleep on that,
Cause Ive got a plan.

10

Youre beautiful. Youre beautiful.

You're beautiful, its true.
I saw your face in a crowded place,
And I dont know what to do,
Cause Ill never be with you.

15

Yeah, she caught my eye,

As we walked on by.
She could see from my face that I was,
Flying high,
And I dont think that Ill see her again,

20

But we shared a moment that will last till the end.

Youre beautiful. Youre beautiful.
Youre beautiful, its true.
I saw your face in a crowded place,
And I dont know what to do,

25

Cause I'll never be with you.

Youre beautiful. Youre beautiful.
Youre beautiful, its true.
There must be an angel with a smile on her face,
When she thought up that I should be with you.

30

But its time to face the truth,

I will never be with you.
