INSTALLATION ONTO YOUR Palm OS® DEVICE

Files:

The following files are included in the download file for both the demo and
registered versions and you must HotSync® them onto your PDA for Pump
Calculations to work correctly:

• MathLib.prc - Mathlib version 1.1

• NSBRuntime.prc - NS Basic Runtime version 4.4.1 (NOTE: This program
requires version 4.4.1 or later to function properly)
• NSBSystemLib version 2.01 – Shared library for cut, copy, paste and undo
commands (WARNING: Using an earlier version of NSBSystemLIb will
cause fatal errors on Palm Tungsten T3 devices)
• Pump.prc – Pump Calculations application

Installation Procedure:

1. Create a file folder then copy all of the files from PumpReg.zip to this new
folder.

2. Click the install icon within Palm Desktop, select “Add” then locate the new
folder that you created.

3. Add Mathlib, NSBRuntime, NSBSystemLib and Pump to the installation

list. Please note that MathLib, NSBRuntime and NSBSystemLib MUST

Pump Calculations version 2.5.2 5

PROGRAM INFORMATION AND LIMITATIONS

This program has the following limitations:

1. The program has been designed using well documented, standard

calculations for centrifugal pumps.

2. This program does not include viscosity correction. While viscosity

correction is not commonly used, the user should verify using standard
viscosity correction charts that the program will produce accurate results
for the fluid being studied.

Pump Calculations supports the European number convention (i.e., using a ","
instead of a "." for the decimal point). The program determines which convention
to use based on the Country setting you have selected for your device.

3. Select if numbers should be right padded with zeros
4. Select the color to be used for menus, alert boxes and popup
backgrounds

Tapping the X button at the upper right corner of the screen will return you to the
previous form.

Main Form (displayed after program start-up)

From the main form of the application you can calculate power consumption,
torque, incompressible temperature rise and differential head or discharge
pressure (depending on the calculation mode that you select).

Pump Calculations version 2.5.2 10

To change the calculation mode, tap the drop-down list-box as shown below:

As shown, there are three calculation modes available, i.e.,

1. Manually enter discharge pressure (and efficiency)

2. Manually enter differential head (and efficiency)
3. Automatically enter differential head and efficiency from a pump curve

Note that if you choose Use Curve, a second popup appears allowing you to
choose between the speed entered on the Curve form or the actual speed of the
pump.

After choosing a mode and entering your data, tap the CALC button for your
calculations to proceed. Results are shown at the bottom of the screen.

Tapping the NPSH button will take you to a form where you can calculate NPSH
available as well as the pump suction pressure, while tapping ECON will take you
to the Operating Cost form. These will be discussed in the following sections.

If you tap the information button to the right of efficiency the program will display
the Specific Speed, which is useful for estimating the efficiency of the pump if
you do not have information from the manufacturer.

Pump Calculations version 2.5.2 11

NPSH Form

The NPSH form allows you to calculate the NPSH available for the pump as well
as the suction pressure.

If flowrate or density was supplied when in the main form, these values are
carried over into the NPSH form. Also, changing them in the NPSH form will
update the main form.

After entering your data into all of the supplied fields, tap the CALC button for
your calculations to proceed. The results appear at the bottom of the screen.

Tapping the LINE SIZE button will take you to the Steel Pipe Properties form.
Here you can choose a nominal pipe size and schedule number to allow the
program to find the suction line I.D. for you.

Tapping the X button at the upper right hand side of the Steel Pipe Properties
form will return you to the NPSH form.

Pump Calculations version 2.5.2 12

Tapping the EQUIV LENGTH button on the NPSH form will take you to the
Equiv. Length Estimator form. This form lets you enter the number of the
different types of fittings used for the pump suction line along with the quantity
(straight length) of pipe. NOTE: A fitting for the entry into the suction line
from a process vessel is built into the equivalent length calculation.

Tap the CALC button to calculate the equivalent length of your suction piping.
Note that on this form the result appears near the top right hand side of the
screen.

To return to the NPSH form, tap the X button at the upper right hand corner of
the screen. The calculated equivalent length will replace any previous value that
may have been entered.

While on the NPSH form you can also tap the information icon beside the
absolute roughness entry. This will call up a form where you can select an
absolute roughness for your pipe material.

Tapping the X button at the upper right hand corner of the NPSH form will return
you to the main form. Note that if the calculated suction pressure is significantly
different from the value entered on the main form an alert box will appear asking
if you want to update the main form’s value (choose yes or no).

Pump Calculations version 2.5.2 13

Operating Cost Form

Use the Operating Cost form to estimate the operating cost for the pump being
studied. When you enter the form for the first time, tap Select Driver to select
between a steam turbine and electric motor. After making this selection the
remainder of the form appears for the correct option.

After the input boxes appear enter:

• Energy cost ($/kW-h) and motor efficiency for a motor driver

• Energy cost ($/1000 lb or $/1000 kg) and steam rate (lb/HP-hr or kg/kW-h)
for a turbine driver

Tap the CALC button to proceed with the calculations and tap the X button at the
upper right hand corner of the Operating Cost form to return you to the main
form. Tap the info button to display the motor power consumption in both kW
and hp.

data from the selected case.

You can even beam a pump record to someone else that has a registered
version of Pump Calculations (Please respect our copyright and do not
support software piracy. We are a small developer selling products at a
very reasonable price. Distributing the registered version of this software
is illegal and could cause our business to fail).

Pump Calculations version 2.5.2 18

To beam a record, go to the Open a Saved Case form and select the pump you
would like to beam. After selecting tap the Beam button to send the file. Newer
devices with Bluetooth will allow you to select between four different methods of
beaming, i.e.,

• Beam (IR beaming)

• Bluetooth
• PrintMe
• SMS
• VersaMail

For this version of Pump Calculations only IR and Bluetooth beaming has been
tested (and will be supported).

Some devices only support beaming via IR. The program auto-detects if this is
the case and will not show the menu mentioned above (i.e., the device will
immediately begin to search for a device to beam to).

3. Save

Using the Save Data to a Pump File form you can save up to 100 pump cases.

In order to save your data to a pump file a Pump Tag (tag-name) must be
entered. Optional entries include entering a service description and three lines of
case information.

Troubleshooting Guide

Problem Solution

My Tungsten T3 crashes with a “Fatal” Verify that you have NSBSystemLib

error when my device powers down version 2.01 and NSBRuntime version
with Pump Calculations running. 4.4.1 installed on your device.

I get a “Fatal” error: These type of errors are due to one of

the following:
• On start-up
1. A “hack” (i.e., some third party
or launcher programs) being
installed on your device. These
• When the Splash Screen programs modify Palm OS,
appears sometimes with unpredictable
results.
or
Pump Calculations will work
• When I use a menu properly with unmodified Palm
OS. Disable the hack to verify if
this is the problem.

2. NSBRuntime, NSBSystemLib or
MathLib being installed on a
memory card instead of on the
handheld itself. These files
must be installed ONLY on the
handheld.
