PowerINSPECT 2014 What's New

Calibration quality

To improve calibration quality and enable traceability,

PowerINSPECT now provides information on the accuracy of the
machine calibrations and includes the ability to record the details of
the calibration spheres used in an inspection for device or I++
ClientTool protocols.
To support this, a number of changes have been made to the
Machine tab and the dialogs used to manage and perform
calibrations:

The Probe View (see page 4)

The Calibration Area (see page 4)

The Calibrations Settings dialog (see page 5)

The Probe Tool area (see page 5)

Calibrating the probe head (see page 6)

Batch probe calibration (see page 8)

The Probe View

The Probe View now contains extra calibration information about the
probes and positions in the document. When you select a position,
the bottom of the view now shows its last calibration date. When
the position is calibrated, the view also shows the effective diameter
of the probe, the measured sphericity of the calibration sphere, and
the calibration-status icon.

When the Use form tolerance setting check box is selected in the
Calibration Settings dialog (see page 5), the view can show a new
Poorly Calibrated icon, which indicates the probe or position is
calibrated, but the measured sphericity of the calibration sphere is
outside the form tolerance. When you use a poorly calibrated
position to probe an item, a warning message asks whether you
want to continue with the measurement.

The Calibration area

The Calibration area has been extended to show the diameter and
name of the sphere last used to calibrate the probe. It also contains
a new Calibration Details button (see page 9) that enables you to
view the details of calibrations performed during the inspection.

4 Calibration quality

PowerINSPECT 2014 What's New

The Calibration Settings dialog

The Calibration Settings dialog contains a new Use form tolerance
setting check box. When the check box is selected, PowerINSPECT
automatically compares the form of the measured calibration sphere
against the value specified in the Form tolerance box. If the
calculated form of the sphere exceeds this value, the probe is
identified as being poorly calibrated (see page 4).

The Probe Tool area

When the document is connected to the CMM and the Use form
tolerance setting check box is selected in the Calibration Settings
dialog (see page 5), the Probe Tool area displays the current form
tolerance for the measured calibration sphere and a Change button.
If you want to change the form tolerance for the selected probe (or
sensor), click Change and specify a new value in the Form Tolerance
dialog.

Calibrating the probe head

The Calibration Sphere Parameters page of the Probe Head Calibration
Wizard and Calibration Sphere Repositioning Wizard has a new box
that enables you to identify the calibration sphere being used. This
information is automatically recorded when you calibrate a probe or
position, and can be checked and exported in the Calibration Details
dialog (see page 9).

When you calibrate the probe head, the wizard shows the effective
diameter of the probe and the sphericity of the measured calibration
sphere for each probe position. For example:

PowerINSPECT 2014 What's New

When the Use form tolerance setting check box is selected in the
Calibration Settings dialog (see page 5), the Manual Calibration dialog
displays the sphericity of the measured calibration sphere, and
whether the value is within the specified form tolerance. For
example:

The wizard also indicates whether the calculated sphericity of the

calibration sphere is in or out of tolerance. For example:

Batch probe calibration

A new page has been added to the end of the Batch Probe Positions
Calibration Wizard that lists the calculated form for each calibrated
position. When the Use form tolerance setting check box is selected
in the Calibration Settings dialog (see page 5), it also lists the form
tolerances of the positions, and whether the calculated forms were
in or out of tolerance.

If you want to recalibrate positions, select their entries in the list,

and click Recalibrate; otherwise, click Finish to close the dialog.

Part compensation

Previously, PowerINSPECT was only able to apply corrections for

thermal expansion and shrinkage at the level of the inspection
document. This meant that the same compensation had to be
applied when using a document to inspect multiple examples of the
same part. In PowerINSPECT 2014, you can adjust part
compensation for individual Measures, and, if supported by your
measuring device, automatically record the temperature for each
inspection.
These changes have no effect on measurements if you do not
use part compensation.
To specify the default compensation settings for an inspection:
1 Select the Measures > Parameters menu option. The Measure
Parameters dialog is displayed.
2 Select the Part Compensation tab.

32 Part compensation

PowerINSPECT 2014 What's New

3 If you want to compensate for comparing the part with its mold,
enter the multiplier by which you want to scale measurements in
the Shrinkage factor box. For example:

shrinkage is 3%, enter a multiplier of 1.03.

If you are comparing a mold with a model of the part, and the
shrinkage is 1.5%, enter a multiplier of 0.985.

4 If you want to compensate for thermal expansion of the part:

a Select Set temperatures automatically when taking first
measurement to use the temperature recorded by the
measuring device when you select Play All. Deselect the check
box to manually specify the temperature for each Measure.
If you select this check box and the machine protocol
does not support automatic temperature measurement,
an error message is displayed when you start the
inspection.

5 Select Save as default parameters if you want to use these values
as the defaults for new inspections.
6 Click OK to save your changes.
PowerINSPECT does not compensate for thermal expansion of
the probe head and stylus. If you need to compensate for
these changes, calibrate your measuring device at the
temperature at which the measurements will be made.

Measuring the part

To provide more real-time information as you probe the part, the

Feature Probing dialog has been redesigned and extended. In
addition to the standard information, such as the location, size, and
profile of the feature, it can now be configured to display nominals,
deviations, and errors, enabling you to immediately spot problems
with the part or with your measurements.
To configure the probing dialog:
1 Select a geometric item in the inspection sequence and click
. The Feature Probing dialog is displayed.
2 Click

. The Configure dialog is displayed.

3 Select the values you want to display for each item, and click OK
to save your changes.
You can specify the default configuration settings using the
Full-screen measurement page (see page 85) of the Options
dialog. If the nominals are not available for an item, these
settings have no effect.
4 Select other probing options using the other buttons in the dialog
toolbar.
5 Probe the part.

36 Measuring the part

PowerINSPECT 2014 What's New

6 When you have probed enough points to define the feature, the
measurement values are displayed at the top of each column,
together with the details you selected. The values are colourcoded to indicate whether each dimension is above (red), within
(green), or below (blue) tolerance. For example:

To identify a value, mouse over its entry in the dialog; to

alternate between the diameter and radius of a feature,
click the column title.
7 Continue probing the part:

If the item has a probe path, or you have selected the Autoaccept button, the dialog is closed and your measurements
are saved as soon as you have probed the specified number of
points.

If you have chosen to save the points yourself, click

save the measurements and close the dialog.

Feature labelling

The Global Label Settings dialog has been extended to provide

greater differentiation between the feature labels displayed in the
CAD view. As well as being able to control the default values for all
types of measured feature, you now have the flexibility to specify
different combinations of settings for inspection points and
geometric items.
In addition, setting changes are saved with the inspection
document, so it is possible to use different settings for different
types of inspection, and you can also export and import the setting
combinations so they can be re-used in different documents and on
different installations of PowerINSPECT. To reflect these changes,
the name of the dialog has changed from Global Label Settings to
Session Label Settings.
To specify the label settings for an inspection:
1 In the View Options toolbar, click the Show global label settings
button. The Session Label Settings dialog is displayed.
Alternatively, right-click a label in the CAD view and select Label
settings from the context menu.
2 Select the General tab, and specify the default Name, Columns,

PowerINSPECT settings

Several changes have been made to the settings in the Options

dialog. To view and change the settings, select Tools > Options to
open the dialog, and then select the page you want to work with.
Some settings may apply to features that are not available in
your version of PowerINSPECT. Changing these settings has
no effect.
Display options page
A new Hide planes for compound items option has been added to the
page. It works in a similar way to the existing Hide planes and Hide
planes for single points options, except that it enables you to specify
whether the planes of the new compound items (see page 25) are
displayed in the CAD view.
Probing options page
The Probing options page specifies the number of points that must
be probed for each type of item when using the Auto-accept feature
for manual measurement of features. In PowerINSPECT 2014, the
page contains a new Points for ellipse box for use with the new
Probed Ellipse item (see page 22).

Compound probing options page

A new Compound probing options page has been added to the
dialog. It is similar to the Probing options page, except that it
enables you to specify the number of points to be taken when using
the Auto-accept feature to measure the new compound items (see
page 25).
To configure the Auto-accept for compound items:
1 In the Plane area, enter the points required for the plane
component of each item.
2 In the 2D items section, enter the points required for each
geometric feature. For example, to require six points before
accepting each circle item, type 6 in the Points for circle box.
3 To select the Auto-accept enabled check box in each new
compound item by default, select the Enable-auto-accept items by
default check boxes.
When the Auto-accept enabled check box is selected for an
item, the Auto-accept
Probing dialog,

button is selected in the Feature

Full screen measurement page

When you play an item in the inspection sequence, PowerINSPECT
switches to full-screen mode, and the details of the points taken
and measurement information are displayed in the Feature Probing
dialog. Use the Full screen measurement page to specify the
information that is displayed in the dialog by default. Select:

Nominals to display the nominal of each measurement for the

item being probed.

Deviations to display the calculated deviation from nominal for

each measurement.

Errors to display the amount by which each measurement

exceeds the specified tolerance.

To change the measurement settings while probing a feature, click

in the Feature Probing dialog.
