This booklet provides, at a glance, a comprehensive picture of Kenyas economy, covering all sectors as well
as reflecting the various trends over the last three years.
As part of its mandate of maintaining a National Socio-Economic Database, the Bureau launched KenInfo
and Integrated Multi-Sectoral Information System (IMIS), systems which will ensure continuous access of
Kenyas indicators at any time wherever one may be in the globe.

Vision
The vision for the Kenya National Bureau of Statistics is to become a centre of excellence in
statistics production and management .
Mission
The mission of the Bureau is to effectively manage and coordinate the entire National
Statistical System to enhance statistical production and utilization.
Values
The corporate values of the Bureau are user-orientation, credibility, integrity and quality
awareness. In addition to these values, an environment where everyone can contribute fully
and can develop as an individual.
Mandate
The mandate of the Kenya National Bureau of Statistics is the collection, compilation, analysis,
publication and dissemination of statistical information, and the co-ordination of the national
statistical system, and for connected purposes.

As per the old Constitution as saved under Section 3 of the Sixth Schedule of the New Constitution, Parliament consists of
president and the national assembly.
(a)

The President:

Is the Head of State and Commander-in -Chief of the Armed Forces of the Republic to be elected in accordance with the
provisions of the of the constitution. (Act.No.28 of 1964, however provided for the first President to be the person who
immediately before the 12th December, 1964, held the Office of the Prime Minister under the Constitution). The Constitution
of Kenya (Amendment) Act No.6 of 1992 provided that the candidates for President who is elected as a member of the
National Assembly and who receives a greater number of valid votes cast in the Presidential election than any other
candidate for president and who, in addition receives a minimum of twenty-five percent of the valid votes in at least five of
the eight provinces shall be declared to be elected as President.
The constitution of Kenya (Amendment) Act No.3 of 2008 provides for a Prime Minister and two Deputy Prime Ministers of
the Government of Kenya.
b)

The National Assembly

The Constitution of Kenya (Amendment) No.4 Act 40 of 1996 provided for the establishment of a National Assembly
comprising one House, thus the Senate and House of Representatives were amalgamated to form one Chamber (Unicameral
System) and the Constitution of Kenya (Amendment) (No.2) Act No. 45 of 1968 provided for an election of the President
and the Nominated Members.

The Constitution of Kenya


Is appointed by the President from among the elected members of the National Assembly
The Cabinet
Consists of the President, The Vice President, Prime Minister, two Deputy Prime Ministers and other Ministers.

Is appointed by the President from amongst the elected Members of the National Assembly who is the Parliamentary
leader of:
i.
The political party that has the largest number of Members in the Assembly or
ii.
A coalition of political parties, pursuant to the National Accord and Reconciliation Act, 2008.

In the New Constitution promulgated on 27th August 2010 Parliament will now comprise of two Houses, the
Senate and the National Assembly with a membership of 418. In addition, Cabinet Secretaries will be appointed
from outside Parliament and the President and the Deputy President will no longer be Members of Parliament.
Some provisions of Chapters 8 and 9 relating to the Executive and the Legislature are suspended as provided
in Section 2 of the Sixth Schedule.
