Incoming President Gives Talk on Shepherding

The teaching of incoming President Manny
Jimenez reminded the
members of the community
of their roles as shepherds.
A shepherd is someone
who protects. Someone
who guides. says Manny.
He equated shepherding to
caring. He said, CARE
means:
C - commitment, character building

A - accountability,
attention to God
R - relationship to
God and with
others
E - encourage
What is shepherding

This mandate is the very
character of a shepherd.

Fr. Raffy De Gracia.
The breakfast sharing came next with
Manny and Reggie Jimenez sharing their
beautiful journey of faith.
After a sumptuous lunch, came the
wacky part of the celebration, the presentations. Unit Mission members danced to a
jumpy beat while offering the 18 roses. Unit
Formation and In Formation brothers and
sisters swayed gracefully as they brought
their candle offering, while Unit PSD did
equally a beautiful dance number as they

With almost a hundred members in
attendance the debut party was a hit. What
with many of the members experiencing a

affair was doubly memorable with the
photo booth set up to capture the happy
moments of the celebration.

giver in BCBP an AGL should
be and do the following:

He communicates the
BCBP Vision and Mission.
Members must be informed of the directions
of the community

He must have the capacity

to love and serve. He

must have genuine concern for his members.

He prays and intercede

for his members.

He must conduct a regu-

lar one on one meeting

with his members, at least

twice a year.
Manny stressed the importance of one on one for the
AGL to establish a relationship
with his members. He said, If
there is no relationship, it is
almost impossible to love.
However the pastoral responsibility of an AGL is limited to
what is written in the BCBP
white card.
Manny further stressed that
one on one is not a confession.
It is a discussion of the members growth in his relationship
with the Lord. Focus must be
on the members concern.
Strict confidentiality should
be observed in what is being
discussed in the one on one. If

Vito has just retired as Samars
DILG Provincial Director. Though he
still has full 2years to stay in that
position with the prestige and all the
perks that go with it, he opted to
retire to fully serve as BCBP RCD.
Before becoming the RCD for
Northeast Leyte and Samar, he has
been the outreach head of Calbayog
and eventually became its first chapter head.
Vito shared the difficulties of being a BCBP leader but he relies on
the promise in Philippians 4:13, I will

Christ Jesus who strengthens me.

Intercessory Ministry Prays the 2,000 Hail Marys

To end the month of the Holy
Rosary, the intercessory Ministry
prayed the 2K Hail Mary Devotion.
The prayer vigil started at 10 oclock
in the morning on October 29 and
ended at 10 pm of the same day.

The devotees in prayer

Kuya Vito and Ate Nimfa Aballe

hosted the activity at their place in
Pajo, Lapulapu City. The 12 hours
prayer vigil saw many brothers and
sisters taking turn in praying one
hundred Hail Marys after each of the
20 prayer petitions.
This is the 6th year the Intercessory Ministry initiated this prayer

devotion which was first started by

Kuya Arlin and Ate Lita Tan. Although this years prayer vigil had less
participants compared to last year but
this time many ates such as Ate Remy
Caballero, Ate Titing Matheu, Ate
Ching Sagarino, Ate Nimfa Aballe and
2 guest sisters completed the prayer
vigil from start to finish.
Praying for others with others
through the 2K Hail Marys is a beautiful and grace filled tradition BCBP
Mactan is proud to have.
To those who missed it this year,
see you in October 2012.

BCBP Leaders Training Institute Launched

The BCBP Leaders Training
Institute was launched during
the BCBPs annual National
Leaders Retreat with its first
training course focusing on
Christian Morality: the 10 Commandments. Instead of the usual
annual retreat for the more than
200 BCBP leaders who gathered
on Thursday, September 29, at
the Carmelites Center in Tagaytay, the long weekend was the
first in a series of intensive leaders training courses for BCBP
leaders.
Fr. Herb Schneider, BCBPs
Spiritual Director, conducted
the course consisting of eleven
talks on the 10 Commandments,
ending with celebration of the
Eucharist late Sunday morning,
October 2. He focused his discussion of the two Tables of the
Decalogue in three main areas:
Scripture, Basic Truth, and the
Pastoral Approach. He emphasized that it is not enough to
take the commandments literally
or legalistically, but we need to
understand that the commandments outline the areas of
Christian morality that should
govern our lives and provide a
framework for us to do good
whenever and however we can.
Each commandment was
presented by highlighting its
significance through O.T. and
N.T. scripture passages, its
meaning that encompassed both
its positive and its negative aspects, and how the commandment should impact our inner
disposition. Once this basis was

the group on how to handle
practical pastoral concerns arising from the commandment,
with particular emphasis on daily
life application and BCBP community concerns.
All BCBP leaders, Regional
Council Directors and Chapter
Heads are now expected to
echo the teachings to all BCBP
members in their respective
regions and chapters. Jun Latay,
one of the National Leaders
Training participants, echoed the
sentiments of the group: Thank
you, Fr. Herb, for a very enlightening NLT on the 10 Commandments! The challenge is clear

evening was highlighted by a
community Lords Day ceremony
and festive meal. Afterwards, the
evening was capped by a rousing
fellowship facilitated by BCBP
Calamba CH Bunny and Dette

that saw all participants dancing
to the lively rhythm of Waku,

never danced a step in their

The BCBP Leaders Training
Institute arose from the consultations and results of the National Strategic Planning Retreat
#4 held last year 2010. According to Fr. Herb, this Christian
Morality course will be followed
by intensive training courses in
the Nicene and Apostles Creeds,
the Our Father, and other
courses relevant to growing our
Christian faith and practice.

Eternal Rest Grant Unto Them O God
Fr. Martin Okafor-Ilozue CSSp - BCBP Mactan BCLP19

Fr. Martin

For Christians,
death, though a
sad occurrence
does not signify
the end of life

Once more on the 1st and 2nd of November we trooped to the cemetery
for the commemoration of our dead ones. It had been an old practice in the
church. On the 1st we celebrate the feast of all the Saints (Halloween), those
who died but were not officially canonized and then on the 2 nd we commemorate all the dead. In the Christian world, death has an important place
in our faith and has been described in many different theological discusses,
and of course in the scripture. Thus death is defined as; the permanent termination of the biological functions that sustain a living organism. Phenomena
which
commonly
bring
about
death
include
old
age, predation, malnutrition, disease, and accidents or trauma resulting in
terminal injury. The nature of death has been for millennia a central concern
of the world's religious traditions and of philosophical enquiry, and belief in
some kind of afterlife or rebirth has been a central aspect of religious faith.
Death is a reality everything has to face, even our planet is heading towards that, it is inevitable and must surely happen. For Christians, death,
though a sad occurrence does not signify the end of life, human beings were
created in the image of God, and that spark of life does not die unless destroyed by God (those who may not resurrect). Death is only a passage that
brings one from this earthly life into eternal existence with God. This is what
our faith teaches. So when we go to the cemetery, it is in this belief that
those who die still have communion with us as their spirit still survives physical destruction of the body. Being in communion with them through remembering while we are still alive and then also until we join them with our own
death, or at the resurrection of all who have died.
Our visiting the graves of our dead loved ones becomes a public sign of
our remembering them and also praying for the repose of their souls. As
Catholics, we believed that prayers of the living has an effect in the disposition of the souls of the dead, by this I mean that those of them who have not
reached our eternal glory because of their unforgiven sins, may still by the
mercy of God through our prayer enter the eternal inheritance prepared for
us by Christ Jesus himself.
Finally, our visiting the cemetery serves as reminder to us, letting us see
how it will one day be for us, this will help us to be more ready to be with
the Lord, well prepared and knowing that it is not end of our relationship
with others.

Magnify your blessings and not your problems. Think happy thoughts all thru the day. Always find
the good in other people and not their weaknesses. Be happy life is short.

QUICK QUESTIONS

Q:

A:

Why do we fast for one hour before Holy Communion?

By ancient tradition Christians abstain from profane food prior to receiving the sacred food of the Eucharist. Until the pontificate of Pope
Pius XII the Eucharistic fast was from midnight. Pope Pius reduced it to
three hours, and after Vatican II, Pope Paul VI reduced it to one hour.
The current Code of Canon Law states,
Canon 919
1. One who is to receive the Most Holy Eucharist is to abstain from
any food or drink, with the exception only of water and medicine,
for at least the period of one hour before Holy Communion.
2. A priest who celebrates the Most Holy Eucharist two or three
times on the same day may take something before the second or
third celebration even if the period of one hour does not intervene.
3. Those who are advanced in age or who suffer from any infirmity,
as well as those who take care of them, can receive the Most Holy
Eucharist even if they have taken something during the previous
hour.
The Eucharistic fast is before Holy Communion, not the Mass. It is a
fast from food and drink, water is alright, as is medicine. The moral theology tradition teaches that to be food it must be a) edible, b) taken by
mouth, and c) swallowed. In addition to breakfast, lunch and dinner,
candies, breath mints, lozenges and anything that is put into the mouth
to be dissolved or chewed meets these conditions once the dissolved
contents are swallowed. Chewing gum does not break the fast, but it is
disrespectful of the Sacred Liturgy and once the juice is swallowed the
fast is broken. The tradition also teaches that the fast is strict - one hour,
that is, 60 minutes. Given that until recently the fast was from midnight,
this seems very little to ask of Catholics.

Reunions

Nery Gula

The day after the

memorable BCBP Mactan18th anniversary celebration, I had to sail to
Bohol for my uncles
burial. I am very thankful
given this rare opportunity to meet close relatives in Panglao.
Although the event
was sad due to the passing away of the only remaining sibling of my
Mom, still it brought
beautiful smiles to our
faces knowing that in
times of death we are
not alone.
Cousins from Cebu,
Cagayan de Oro City,
and Kapatagan, whom I

did not meet for some

time, came to pay last
homage to my uncle.
In this reunion, happy
and sad memories were
recalled and shared over a
sumptuous serving of local
delicacies. Most importantly, the occasion was a
time to mend broken relationships, establish one
where there was none and
strengthen that which already exists.
My short stay in Panglao
also gave me the time to
visit the grave site of my Pa
and Ma and other relatives.
Together with my sister
and cousins we toured
three cemeteries, lighted
candles and offered prayers

for our departed relatives.

This exercise of faith
made me realize that
reunions are our ultimate
end. While we the living
were reunited to remember the dead, my
uncle is reunited with his
siblings in the other
world, and reunited to
God his maker.
I came back very happy
for having been given the
special grace to visit my
birthplace, pray for my
love ones and build and
strengthen relationships.
God is really good.
