1.2 Scattered light measuring method

Several optical sensors measure a combination of light scattered and absorbed by oil
droplets in the sample stream. The sensor signals are then processed by a microprocessor to produce a linearised output.
If an alarm (works set point 15 ppm) occurs, the two oil alarm relays are activated after
the (adjustable) time delay.
A self-diagnosis is integrated in the monitor for the components of the sensor and the evaluation circuitry.
The microprocessor continuously monitors the condition of the sensor components and
associated electronics to ensure that calibration accuracy is maintained over time and extremes of environmental conditions.
The diagram below shows the principle of scattered light measuring.

1.3 Design of the Monitor

All components are assembled in an alloy enclosure with the protection class IP 65. The
optical components are mounted directly on the printed circuit board. The plug-in technology ensures an easy changing of the components together with a compact and robust
construction. The electronics are state-of-the-art.
The wetted parts are produced from stainless steel to ensure a reliable corrosion protection for a long time. The sample water is fed to the unit from underneath and is discharged
at the top and to the side.
The mounting brackets of the unit are prepared at the rear of the unit either for wall or
bulkhead mounting.

Installation of the Monitor OMD-11

3.1 With an RWO oily water separator of 0.1 or 0.25 m3/h capacity
Because of the small size of the oily water separator, the Monitor OMD-11 is not mounted
on the separator but delivered separately.

IMPORTANT
The Monitor OMD-11 should be located close to the oily water separator in order to
minimise response delays. The distance between monitor and separator should never be more than 8 metres; any greater distance would result in a response time of
over 20 seconds which is the max response time in accordance with IMO regulations.

Connect the 3-way cock on the Monitor OMD-11 with the separators clean water outlet
pipe and the freshwater supply, using 8 mm copper piping and ERMETO connections.
The sampling pipe should be installed horizontal or in a continuous upward flow.
The outlet pipe of the Monitor OMD-11 has to be connected to the 3-way diverting valve.
In the alarm state, the effluent water is recirculated to bilge.
When assembling the housing and connecting the piping, it is important to avoid stressing
the housing so as to prevent possible damage.

Operation
4.1 Important Notes
a)

This equipment must be installed and operated in strict accordance with the instructions contained in this manual. Failure to do so will impair the protection provided.

b)

Installation and servicing must be undertaken by a competent and suitably skilled

person.

c)

The equipment must be earthed according to the relevant requirements.

d)

The unit must be isolated from the electrical supply before any maintenance of the
equipment is attempted.

e)

All national or local codes of practice or regulations must be observed and, where
applicable, are deemed to take precedence over any directive or information contained in this manual.

f)

To avoid wrong measurements, only quick separating detergents / cleaner should be

used.

g)

In case of freezing conditions the measuring cell should be emptied completely.

4.2 Commissioning
Once the installation, wiring and piping connections have been completed, carry out the
following checks:

4.2.1

Connections
a) Switch the oily separator to ON. Check whether the Power LED lights up.
Check the power supply to the oily separator if necessary.

DANGER
At electrical voltages > 42 V
Direct contact with live parts can cause serious injury or death.
Only qualified electricians should carry out work on live parts.
b) Check all piping connections for leaks and rectify as appropriate.
c) Check the flow rate.
The equipment is set up in the factory for a flow rate 0.5 up to 4 l/min. Adjust the
flow rate through the unit by using the small screws in the cell cap (Fig. 1, Pos.
15). Turning the screw anticlockwise will increase the flow rate.
Note: The flow rate should be checked on both the clean water supply and the
separator sample supply. If the clean water supply is obtained from a high
pressure source, the flow rate will be higher than from the sample point.
The flow rate does not influence the accuracy of the instrument. The adjustment
is only important for the time delay between the sample point and the monitor.

Functional Tests
a) Run oil-free water through the instrument to purge the system.
a) Switch on the instrument
and make sure that the
Power LED is illuminated and the display is
changing between "INI"
and numbers, decreasing from "20". The monitor will display "0" with clean water, otherwise the
monitor will be in working conditions when it reached the measured value.
Allow a few minutes for the system to warm up and stabilise.
b) During oil-free water is running through the monitor check the Zero adjustment according Section 11. The display should be "0". If the display varies by
greater amounts, it may be that air entrainment is present. If this is the case,
the cause must be located and rectified.
c) If the Zero needs to be calibrated, this can be done by using the buttons on
the front panel. Pressing simultaneously the buttons " ! " and " " " will decrease the display, pressing simultaneously the buttons " " " and " # " will
result in a higher reading.

4.3 Alarm
The unit is delivered with a works adjustment according the IMO-requirements. The alarm
points are set to 15 ppm. Other alarm levels (for 5 or 10 ppm) can be set (see 4.4).

4.4 Alarm Set Points and Time Delay

Two alarm circuits, with levels adjustable over the entire measuring range, are built into
the equipment. The alarm circuits 1 + 2 are set up in the factory for 15 ppm (according to
IMO). Each circuit has an alarm LED associated with it. Each alarm circuit has, in addition, a potential-free contact for feeding the signal to the outside or for the controlling of
electrical circuits.
In RWO oily separators with Monitor OMD-11, the alarm 1 signal is taken to the ships
alarm system. The signal cable should be connected to terminals 17 and 18 of the separators control system.
In RWO oily separators with Monitor OMD-11, the alarm 2 signal is used to control the 3way recirculation valve. If the limiting value for residue oil is exceeded, it is switched to
recirculate back to the bilge or to the bilge water tank. The valve will also be switched to
this position if the bilge water oil separator is switched to the OFF position or the pneumatic pressure fails.

Please note for better understanding:

Alarm output of the Monitor OMD-11
in alarm status the position of the alarm switch is open (potential-free, de-energised)
if the power supply is interrupted or the system is not in service, the position of the
alarm sw itch is also in alarm position open, (potential-free, de-energised)
This fact sometimes causes trouble because the ships alarm is initiated when
the oily water separator is off.
Because of this fact, we recommend to connect the alarm 1 output to the control box of
the oily water separator. Here the alarm circuit will be closed as soon as the main switch
of the control box is in off position i. e. no alarm signal will be transmitted as long as the
oily water separator is not in service.
The alarm 2 is used to control the 3-way diverting valve at the clean water outlet of the oily
water separator. If the oil content in the outflow exceeds 15 ppm, the 3-way valve will be
switched over from "overboard discharge to "recirculation to bilge or bilgewater tank.

4.5 Setting alarm levels and time delays

Both alarm relays can be set to individual thresholds between 2 - 15 ppm and a time delay
between 2 - 20 sec., if required.
The works setting for both thresholds is 15 ppm according to IMO. The time delay for
alarm relay 1 and 2 is factory- adjusted to 10 sec.
Alarm relay 1 for the ships alarm and
Alarm relay 2 for the 3-way recirculation valve
All adjustments can be changed on site by using the buttons on the front panel.
The adjustment can only be done in the programming mode. To enter this mode, all 3
buttons " ! " # " have to be pressed simultaneously when the monitor is powered on.
During the programming mode the unit is in the alarm condition.
After starting the programming mode the display will show an "A" changing
with the actual alarm set point. At the same time the alarm LED for alarm
circuit 1 is energised. Pressing the " ! " button will decrease the set point,
pressing the " # " button will increase the threshold. An alarm set point
above 15 ppm is not possible.
When the changed set point is confirmed by pressing the " " " button, or
if the internal adjusted time without pressing any button is passed, the
display will show a "T" changing with the actual time delay. At the same
time the alarm LED for alarm circuit 2 is energised. Pressing the " ! "
button will decrease the time delay pressing the " # " button will increase
the time delay. A time delay above 20 sec. is not possible.
After confirming the selected value the sequence is repeated for alarm circuit 2. In this
case the alarm LED for alarm circuit 2 is energised.
The last point of the programming mode is done by the choice for the signal output. It can
be changed between 0 - 20 mA and 4 - 20 mA.
The changing is done similar to the a.m. settings by
using the " ! " or the " # " button. The display will
show the actual value of "0-" or "4-".
Note:
All changes have to be confirmed by pressing the "
" " button. Otherwise the old values are still valid.

4.6 Recorder
If a recorder is necessary for continuous measured value data acquisition, RWO can offer
its own single-channel recorder of type DEGU. The Monitor OMD-11 has an output signal
(either 0 - 20 mA or 4 - 20 mA) available for this purpose.

Monitor operation
7.1 with an RWO oily water separator of 0.1 or 0.25 m3/h capacity

IMPORTANT!
With these low capacity separators, the complete water flow of the separator is led
through the monitor. For this, the holes in the head screw of the cell are opened by
removing the flow adjustment screws in the factory.

7.2 with an RWO oily water separator from 0.5 to 10.0 m3/h capacity

IMPORTANT!
With these separators, only a part of the water flow through the separator is led via
a bypass through the monitor. For this, a back-pressure orifice plate (separator,
Pos. 11) is built into the main flow between the pump and the 3-way recirculation
valve (separator Pos. 23). The amount of the flow through the monitor is, as a rule,
already set up in the factory.
The flow rate can be increased in special installation cases by the removal of an
adjusting screw, or even both if required, Pos. 15, in the cell head screw (see Section 1.3, Fig. 1). The flow rate should be at least 0.5 litre/min and for these separator duties, usually not greater than 2 litre/min.

7.3 Before commissioning

7.3.1

Check if all electrical wiring is done perfectly.

DANGER
At electrical voltages > 42 V
Direct contact with live parts may cause serious injury or death.

7.5 Monitoring operation and alarm events during operation

7.5.1

When water containing oil flows through the device, the oil concentration is indicated by the 2-figure, 14-segment LEDs. The alarm LEDs, Pos 12 and 13, (see
Section 1.3, Fig. 1) show green.

7.5.2

If the oil concentration should exceed 15 ppm, the alarm LEDs, Pos 12 and 13,
(see Section 1.3, Fig. 1) change from "GREEN" to "RED" and both relays (relay 1,
alarm to control room and relay 2, for the 3-way recirculation valve) switch over after
10 secs..

Storage under frost conditions

IMPORTANT!
During standstill when there is a danger of freezing, the measurement cell must be completely emptied in order to prevent the glass tube breaking. To do this, loosen and then
remove both water supply pipes at 3-way ball valve (separator, Pos 25),. switch the 3way ball valve to the flushing water supply position. The water can then run out of the
measuring cell.. Remove the measuring cell head screw and carefully blow out any water
remaining.

Maintenance
The maintenance effort needed to keep the device functioning is relatively low.
The following maintenance work should be carried out each week:
a) Switch the separator off.
b) Flush out the measuring cell with oil-free water.
c) Close the sample water and clean water supplies.
d) Remove the measuring cell head screw (Fig. 1, Pos. 5).
e) Use a brush in the measuring cell to clean the glass tube by using an up and down motion
over the whole of its length.
f)
Remove the brush and replace the measuring cell head screw.
g) Open the clean water inlet and flush out the measuring cell for several minutes.
h) Switch the separator on.
i)
The monitor power LED should light up and the indicator "INI" should show a set of numbers, beginning with "20", then change and after a short time show "0".
j)
If "0 does not appear, carry out a zero balance as in Section 4.2.2.
k) Open the process water inlet.
l)
Check whether the desiccator cartridge (Fig. 1, Pos. 14) is blue in colour. If it is light blue or
white, the cartridge is exhausted and has to be replaced.

IMPORTANT!
The desiccator cartridge ensures a low humidity inside the measuring cell to prevent erroneous readings which could arise from condensation on the glass tube. Changing the
cartridge is done by unscrewing the unit from the front plate and screwing in again. This
can be done without opening up the equipment. The protective shell of the new cartridge
serves also as a tool.

10.2 Sample Cell Tube Replacement

An alarm, as described in 10.1, is also given if there is a defect in the sample tube. In this
case the glass tube must be replaced as soon as possible to prevent damage by oxidation
to the electronics. The sample tube should be changed as follows:

IMPORTANT!
Before opening the device, make sure that any water that might be lying on the
housing is wiped off. If you dont take this precaution, water can run over the edge
into the device and damage the electronic parts.
10.2.1
Switch off the power supply.
10.2.2

Remove all piping from the instrument.

10.2.3

Open the instrument and remove the front panel. Disconnect the plug connection from the PCB (Dwg. No. 60600-50, P4). Pull the PCB carefully out of its
seat.

10.2.4

Loosen the 3 screws from the outlet block (4) and remove this carefully. Loosen
the 3 screws from the inlet block (1) and remove this together with the sample
tube (7).

place.

10.2.10 Examine the colour of the desiccator (Fig. 1, Pos. 14). If the colour is light blue
or white, the desiccator needs to be replaced.

IMPORTANT!
The desiccator cartridge ensures a low humidity inside the measuring cell
to prevent erroneous readings which could arise from condensation on
the glass tube. Changing the cartridge is done by unscrewing the unit
from the front plate and screwing in again. This can be done without
opening up the equipment. The protective shell of the new cartridge
serves also as a tool.

10.4 Calibration

DANGER
At electrical voltages > 42 V
Direct contact with live parts may cause serious injury or death.
Work on live parts should only be carried out by qualified electricians.

IMPORTANT!
Before opening the device, make sure that any water that might be lying on the
housing is wiped off. If you dont take this precaution, water can run over the edge
into the device and damage the electronic parts.
When calibrating, it is necessary to have a comparison liquid available. For the monitor
OMD-11 this is a Formazin-in-water solution with a concentration of 100 FTU (Formazin
Turbidity Units). A suitable calibration set can be ordered specially under the Article No.
51108EM002.
10.4.1
Switch off the power supply and stop the water inflow.
10.4.2

Open up the device and remove the front plate. Pull the printed circuit board
forward a little till the jumper J1 is accessible.

10.4.3

Set the jumper J1 to its other position, so that the centre pin is now jumpered to
the one on the other side of it.

10.4.4

Replace the front plate and switch the power on. "CA now appears in the display and the device is in the alarm state.

10.4.5

Carefully clean the sample tube with clean water and the sort of brush suitable
for cleaning bottles, as described in Section 12.

10.4.6

Empty the sample tube and fill it with a 100 FTU Formazin solution (A suitable
calibration set can be ordered specially under the Article No. 51108EM002.). It is
necessary, under certain circumstances, to fill the tube twice with the Formazin
solution to exclude the possibility of dilution by any water which may be present.

10.4.7

When you have made sure that the correct Formazin solution is in the device,
press the keys " ! " and " # " at the same time. There now appears in the display 16 1 and the device is calibrated anew.

11.3 Exchange Parts Service

11.3.1

General
Our equipment undergoes strict quality controls before leaving the factory and is
calibrated according to the IMO specifications.

11.3.2

Exchange Equipment Service

If, in spite of the care mentioned above, it should come to an equipment failure,
we recommend you to order a complete exchange monitor from us.
This ensures that, after the exchange, you have a monitor on board that has
been overhauled and tested in our factory.
The defective device which has been replaced should then be sent back to us
immediately.
If you return the defective monitor to us within a reasonable period of time (30
days), RWO will only charge for the repair and transport costs. Otherwise we
must charge the full sum shown on the invoice which accompanies the exchange monitor we send to you.
Experience has shown that this offers the customer the most reasonable price
and ensures at the same time that a device is employed which meets the IMO
specifications.

11.3.3

Exchange of electronic components

Because of small variations in the characteristics of the same type of component, it is recommended to calibrate the Oil monitor after repair and replacement
of such components (except for relays, fuses, etc.).
Otherwise it can come to faulty display values and, if the display value is very
low, to exceeding the allowable limit of oil in water.
For the above reasons, we recommend you to order to an exchange unit from
us.
