Annual Report

Whitney T. Kuniholm
SU USA President

Frank Taylor
SU USA Board Chairman

Dear Friend of Scripture Union,

We are grateful for Gods wondrous works through the ministry of Scripture Union in our annual report
for the fiscal year July 1, 2013 to June 30, 2014. In this report, youll find a summary and highlights of
Scripture Unions activities during that period.
Bible engagement, helping people of all ages to read and live Gods Word, the Bible, is the focal point of all
we do. For adults, the main vehicles for promoting this engagement are The Essential Programs
(The Essential 100, The Essential Jesus, and The Essential Question programs) and the daily Bible reading
guides, Discovery and Encounter with God. As youll read in this report, these programs continue, by Gods
grace, to be used to bring people into Gods Word and closer to him. In particular, we experienced 27%
growth in the nation-wide impact of Scripture Unions ministry, largely through the customization of
The Essential Jesus Bible reading planners for the Son of God feature-length movie.
For children, SUs Bible engagement programs are SuperKids, SUs summer outreach ministry, and
PrimeTime, our after school outreach. Both reach primarily urban, at-risk children with Gods Good News
in Jesus. They continue to grow and touch many young lives for Gods glory.
Indeed, God blessed us in many ways, not the least of which was financially. An audited financial statement
is available on request.
So we present this report with grateful hearts to God for the successes of the past year and for the continuing
privilege of declaring his glory in the year ahead.

Essential Bible Reading Programs

The year was especially exciting for
Scripture Unions Essential Bible
Reading Programs. The original E100
list of Bible passages has grown to 15
separate products for all ages. Newly
released in 2014 is The Essential
Question, a fast-paced journey
through the Book of Acts. It challenges
believers to ask themselves what God
has called them to do, based on Pauls
question in Acts 22:10, What do You
want me to do, Lord?

Bible Ministry

Bible engagement is the process of helping people of all ages take in and live out Gods
Wordand its the heart of everything we do at Scripture Union. 2014 brought an
unusual amount of growth in new programs, new products and the launch of a new
online store, all of which position SU to engage still more children, more youth and more
adults in the next decade. This translates to a 27% growth in the nation-wide reach of
Scripture Unions ministry; 789,563 adults and children engaged with Gods Word through
Scripture Union programs.

The Essential 100, originally published as the Essential Bible Guide, was the original
devotional book by SU President Whitney T. Kuniholm. The 2014 reprint includes new
cover artwork and an all-new layout. The E100 Reading Plan, on which The Essential 100
is based, has reached 2.5 million in 20 languages to date.
The Essential Jesus, originally released in 2009, was also updated with new. These 100
Bible passages trace the story of salvation, through 25 Old Testament Prophecies and
75 New Testament readings to be the Bibles greatest story. Finally, The Essential Series
was given its own brand this year with the E100 Medallion.

Essential Youth Editions

In addition to completing and redesigning the original
Essential Programs, The Essential 100 Program and
The Essential Jesus Program have both been adapted
and released as Youth Editions in partnership with
Doug Fields of Download Youth Ministries. The Youth
Editions feature 20 video introductions each by
Fields, 100 all new mini-studies.

Customized Essential Jesus Resources

Bible Ministry

In December 2013, Scripture Union was

commissioned to provide
customized The Essential Jesus Bible
Engagement resources for the Son of
God movie. The resources became part
of a Curriculum Package that was made
available to churches. So, SU customized
200,000 copies of The Essential Jesus
Bible Reading Planners and Bookmarks
and stock ran out before the movie was
released.

Bible Reading Help Provided for US Military

Scripture Union continues to supply Bible
reading resources to members of the US
military. In partnership with the American Bible
Society, the E100 Bible reading plan has been
provided to over 250,000 soldiers and their
families. In addition, SU sends 3,000-4,000
free copies of Discovery and Encounter with God
to soldiers.

Bible Guides: Backbone of Bible Engagement Ministry

I just wanted to say that I have been using your magazine for 5 years
this coming summer. I love it! A friend got me hooked when I was 32
and I got a few others to join with me.
Encounter With God is the best daily devotional I have ever had.
I am so glad I discovered it. I appreciate the history background to the
passage as well as the spiritual application.

Since 1959, Scripture Union Bible Guides, originally known as

Notes, have helped individuals meet God every day through the
Bible and prayer. Learning the ways that we have helped
never gets old.

Bible Engagement for Children

Engaging children with the Bible has been the inspiration for Scripture Union since
its inception the summer of 1867. That was when a young British office worker,
Josiah Spiers, took children from his Sunday School to a special meeting of hundreds
of children. The children were lively and enjoying themselves and seemed to understand the Bible teachings. Spiers was greatly impressed with this informal and effective approach to ministry to children. He soon began holding regular services of his
own for children with attendance in the hundreds as The Childrens Special Service
Mission (CSSM), which later became Scripture Union.

SuperKids Programs

Childrens Ministry

SuperKids provides an opportunity for children to be safe and not in the streets.
It also gives them tools how to handle situations in the streets.

SuperKids Missions meet for 5 to 10 days to reach kids with the Good News
of Jesus using our SuperKids curriculums. In the summer of 2014, SuperKids
programs reached 6,683 kids at 125 program sites and volunteers were trained to
teach Good News to You through the SuperKids Gospel of Luke.
A SuperKids survey was commissioned summer 2014 as a follow-up to the 2010-2011
Barna Survey. The 2014 findings revealed that 92% of children surveyed felt that what
they liked the most about SuperKids
was that they felt more loved by
God and that they had learned new
things about Jesus (77%).
Even more encouraging, 85% described that because of SuperKids
they want to read the Bible and
that they believe the Bible is true
(62%). None of the children thought
the Bible was boring.

PrimeTime Program

During 2013-2014, PrimeTime after-school outreach

programs expanded its
reach to at-risk children.
Programs were added in
Pennsylvania, Massachusetts, New Jersey, New York, Florida, Texas and Colorado and
resulted in 84 programs ministering to 3,482 children between 1st and 6th grades.

Childrens Ministry

PrimeTime is a faithbased after school program

jointly developed with The
Salvation Army. Aimed at
children 6-12 years old,
the uniqueness of this
childrens Bible engagement program is that it was
carefully written for reaching children who are not
familiar with the Bible.

SuperKids is a good foundation for children to learn about the Bible. It is great to see
children from the neighborhood that dont normally come to our church.
Bernice, SK Volunteer

Scripture Unions Regional Ministry carries out the vision and mission of Scripture
Union through organizing programs and training volunteers in three major ministry
areas: school year outreach to children through PrimeTime, the faith-based after
school program, SuperKids, the summer outreach to children outside the orbit of
the church, and through The Essential 100 Program.

Mid Atlantic Region
In the Mid-Atlantic Region, the number
of SuperKids programs nearly doubled
in 2014. The Mid-Atlantic Region also
expanded its PrimeTime programming
this year in partnership with Whiz-Kids
Tutoring when 1st-3rd graders are tutored
in math and reading for an hour. At the
conclusion of Tutor Time, the children
participate in Club Time, in which they
learn all about following Jesus.

In The Northeast Region,

PrimeTime programs had
a strong representation
through New York City
and the surrounding area,
extended as far as Avril,
Massachusetts on the
border of New Hampshire.
A Partnership with
Salvation Army continues
to expand horizons and
launch new ventures, both
nationally and regionally.
In the Northeast Region
PrimeTime programs that
meet at Salvation Army
facilities through New York
and New Jersey averaged
70 to 100 children in
attendance.
